HUNGARIAN WIREHAIRED VIZSLAS

My grateful thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge and to Sally my steward for keeping my ring in order and ensuring that we finished in time as we did not get a ring until well after 2 o’clock and the group was scheduled for 4.30. I fully understand why the Kennel Club introduced the single C.C. but am not sorry that there will be no more after this year. As a judge it saddened me that I could not award the lovely best bitch the challenge certificate of which she is more than deserving. I often hear people talking of the great variance of type in the HWV but type is there to be found. I think that sometimes the great variance in coat colour from golden sand to russet is confusing for many as is its texture and length. It must be harsh and close fitting, up to 1.5 inches long on the neck and body and with an undercoat. A few long hairs along the back will not suffice. The standard also allows for a considerable variance in size of less than 3 cms (about an inch) as long as the dog remains in proportion. This variance can of course be more or less that the height standard and when considering this it can amount to quite a lot of dog. Nevertheless I was concerned about the size of quite a few exhibits.

Class 2045 VD/B (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7096 SMILLIE Miss D Farnfield Pussy Galore Of Galicar Sh.CM. Very distinguished looking 8 year old bitch who has served the breed well. She is very well balanced with a deep brisket, straight forelegs and elbows close to body. Plenty of bone and substance and a great underline. Super head furnishings, thin leathers set on well, golden sand coat of harsh texture. Moved well with correct footfall.

2nd: 7088 PARRY Ms D Leiborschy Wilfek. Handsome 9 year old with super bone and straight front. Neat feet, clean in backskull, level topline and excellent tail set. Moved well. Preferred length to height ratio of 1.

Class 2046 MPD NO ENTRIES

Class 2047 PD (2 Entries) Abs: 0. Two very different dogs neither of which had undercoat. Both had a decided sheen to their coats which I find distinctly at odds with the qualities required of a wire coat.

1st: 7095 RYAN Mrs V Belatarr Sculptor. He has a well balanced head, good facial furnishings and nice eye. Decent forehand with depth of brisket and tight elbows. Suitably developed second thigh, moved well. He was definitely at the very top end of the height standard and therefore far too big for my taste. Has better balance and height to length ratio than 2.

2nd: 7076 GEORGE, Miss L & PARKER Miss J Firefrost Full Moon. Simply not co-operating with his handler and whilst I would like more substance his size appealed far more than that of the winner. I saw enough to see that he is capable of doing better.

Class 2048 JD (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7081 HARRIS, Dr S & HARRIS Dr K Zoldmali Zeno At Tykashyyk (Imp). Distinguished head, lovely eye with colour matching his coat. Moderately broad skull, clean back skull, thin leathers. Straight front with better length and return of upper arm than 2. Slightly low tail set, harsh russet gold jacket but lacks undercoat.

2nd: 7077 GODFREY Mrs J Tragus Fire King. This dog does himself no favours when posed but nevertheless it was a close decision. His was the first head today that had the coat and furnishing to give the required somewhat square and striking appearance. Moderate length of neck, well laid shoulders but a bit too upright in pastern. He does not have the tailset of 1 but does have fabulous quarters and second thigh development. He looks far better on the move where he is perhaps more relaxed.

3rd: 7076 GEORGE, Miss L & PARKER Miss J Firefrost Full Moon

Class 2049 PGD (3 Entries) Abs: 0. All three were far too proud of their tails but I guess it is something that a customarily docked breed has to live with for the present.

1st: 7082 HARRIS, Dr S & HARRIS Dr K Golden Gatsby At Tykashyyk. This boy has muscles on his muscles! Great body proportions, well laid shoulders and length of upper arm, strong bone but not coarse, well ribbed back with good tail set and moves effortlessly. I would prefer a darker eye to go with his russet coat and found him rather too wide in front.

2nd: 7078 GODFREY Mrs J Tragus Kestrel. His head is of square appearance with dense eyebrows and beard and his gentle eye matches his golden sand colour. I would prefer more length of body and a better turn of stifle but he carries a good coat with undercoat and moves well.

3rd: 7091 POPE, Ms S M & HOWARD Mr L W Zoldmali U R Special (Imp)

Class 2050 LD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7100 STEPHENSON Mrs S Leiborschy Lincoln Of Fryerfold. Great balance and height to length ratio on this boy. Super pro-sternum, well laid shoulders with depth of brisket and elbows close to body. Level topline, correct tailset, moderate bend of stifle but needs more second thigh development. Moves smoothly with the best tail carriage so far.

2nd: 7078 GODFREY Mrs J Tragus Kestrel

Class 2051 OD (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7103 UPTON Mr G Ragnolds Fantastic Mr Fox To Tragus JW. There is a phrase in the breed standard that says ‘a more robust build and a stronger bone structure than the shorthaired Vizsla’ and for me this dog personifies just that. He has the bone, substance and strength in neck and body required of a lively hunting dog. When posed he is a picture of moderation and is most certainly of distinguished appearance. His handsome head is very well balanced with his foreface being slightly shorter that his skull and has the furnishings to give it the somewhat square striking appearance. His eye is slightly oval and the colour harmonises with his coat. His shoulders are well laid back with his chest being deep and his elbows closely tucked in. Ribs are moderately well sprung and carried well back to give him the correct length to height ratio. His hindquarters are moderate and well developed and he stands on tight feet. His close fitting and harsh jacket is of a dark golden sand colour. I have watched this dog many times and his youthful exuberance on the move has been the one thing that disappointed; but not today. His handler got the very best out of him and they moved totally as one. His footfall is precise and in profile has plenty of reach and drive. He is only too willing to demonstrate his affectionate and gentle nature and mirrors that of his handler for him. I was delighted to award him Best Dog, BOB and his crowning C.C.

2nd: 7072 COLLIER Ms I E Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie. I love this boy’s head; it is so well furnished with dense eyebrows under which sits his almost human looking eyes with their lively and intelligent expression. It is well proportioned with a broad nose, moderate stop, slightly rounded skull and medium set thin leathers. He has a great pro-sternum, return of upper arm, level topline and moderate bend of stifle. He wears a harsh golden sand jacket with undercoat. He moves very well but could not match the performance of the winner. Res B.D.

3rd: 7080 HARPER Mr J P Pitswarren Sirocco

Class 2052 GCDorB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7079 GODFREY Mrs J Tragus Rudo. Reserve in open dog. Carries a good coat, golden sand in colour with undercoat. Balanced head, moderately broad skull but ear set is a bit low as is his tail set but he moves well.

2nd: 7078 GODFREY Mrs J Tragus Kestrel

3rd: 7076 GEORGE, Miss L & PARKER Miss J Firefrost Full Moon

Class 2053 MPB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7087 NEWMAN Mr W J & Mrs S E Lanokk Aurelia. What a little sweetheart but oh what a fidget. She has good bone and substance with depth of chest, strong well muscled quarters and tight feet. She is a lovely golden sand colour but lacks wire coat. Moves well once she decides to co-operate.

Class 2054 PB (3 Entries) Abs: 0. Hard to separate 1 & 2. 1 carried her tail down whilst 2 carried hers up!

1st: 7089 PARRY Ms D Leiborschy Lenya. A robust 10 month bitch with strong bone, straight front, well muscled slightly arched neck, enough heart and lung room and strong loin. Pretty head, good ear set and lovely thin leathers of correct shape. Harsh and close fitting coat golden sand in colour. Has a strong reardriving action. BPIB.

2nd: 7105 WEARING Mrs D Zoldmali Anizs At Genlusa. Threw this class away by insisting on straightening her stifle when stacked and generally throwing herself out of balance. She has a lovely head, neck and shoulders with length and good return of upper arm. She has good width behind, is well muscled and a lovely size for me. Harsh russet gold coat. Moved well.

3rd: 7087 NEWMAN Mr W J & Mrs S E Lanokk Aurelia

Class 2055 JB (2 Entries) Abs: 0. I liked both of these youngsters very much. At present 1 has more scope and is more together. Both have very pretty heads with intelligent expressions and firm straight toplines. Their size appealed greatly.

1st: 7085 LEWIN Mr M G Vynesbrook Savanna. Clean and flowing outline presenting a robust picture with strong bone structure. She keeps her lovely outline on the move which she does effortlessly and efficiently with great reach and drive. Superb golden sand wire coat.

2nd: 7102 TAYLOR-KNOWLES Mrs E Tragus Royal Fern. Super on the move as she should be with such great construction. Her tailset is rather too low and she did not have the harsh coat of 1.

Class 2056 PGB (8 Entries) Abs: 0. A tough class with depth of quality.

1st: 7093 RICHARDSON Mr S & Mrs K Tragus Apricot Beauty Of Carlequin. A mature bitch of substance and style and, for me, medium sized. Lovely head and eye set on a well muscled neck with beautiful crest, well laid shoulders, plenty of depth, ribs carried well back and strong, well developed hindquarters. Harsh golden sand coat with undercoat. Strong mover with great drive.

2nd: 7097 SMILLIE Miss D Oakberrow Gintastic. Another of the size that appeals and with breed type in abundance. Distinguished appearance with strength of bone and structure, plenty of depth with elbows close to body, good underline with only slight tuck up. I liked her very much indeed; she was unlucky to meet 1.

3rd: 7086 MAY Mrs K & Mr R Amiryck Dabinett

Class 2057 LB (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 7104 UPTON Mr P & Mrs L Tragus Honey Buzzard JW. This russet gold bitch carries a dense wire coat with dense eyebrows and short, dry hair on her skull. She has great balance, a noble head, fabulous length and return of upper arm, strong neck, moderate spring of rib and a powerful backend with a good strong bum. She is a quality exhibit but did not have the form or movement to take her to top honours today.

2nd: 7106 WEARING Mrs D Zoldmali Ubrez At Genlusa (Imp). She is of very good type and presents a classic outline with its level back and slightly low tailset. She has good width behind, is well muscled and has a moderate bend of stifle. I saw enough of her movement to see that it is sound and ground covering.

3rd: 7084 HOWES Mr G J Firefrost Amethyst

Class 2058 OB (3 Entries) Abs: 0. Three very good bitches in this class; all worthy of a first place.

1st: 7073 COLLIER Ms I E Belatarr Mahalia Jackson. Just like her brother who was Res BD she has a beautiful head and expression with the furnishings to give it a very striking and square appearance. She has strength of neck and body, is well off for bone and substance and very well muscled throughout. Her shoulders are well laid and ribs moderately sprung and carried well back. She has a nice big bum to propel her round the ring on a free and easy stride and her tail carriage is excellent. Her golden sand coat is of good texture with an undercoat. I was sorry that there was only one CC on offer and so she had to settle for B.B. and Res. C.C.

2nd: 7094 RICHARDSON Mr S & Mrs K Sh Ch Tragus Zuri Sh.CM. A lovely bitch and a worthy champion. She is of a lovely size and is solidly made with great lay back of shoulder and return of upper arm. She has a strong level topline, fabulous quarters and a lovely harsh coat with depth to it. It was a close call between 1 & 2 which was decided on the fact that 2 did not have the facial furnishings nor the ear set of the winner. She moves very well and is quietly handled. Res B.B.

3rd: 7098 SMITH Mrs B E & Mr D B Tragus Ayana
