MID WESTERN GUNDOG SOCIETY OPEN SHOW - 18th February 2018

My thanks to the Committee for their generous invitation to judge at this shows. One of my favourites in the West Country. Thanks also to my two very hard working stewards - Tony and Sue. Finally and most importantly thank you to all exhibitors bringing their dogs. I had a most enjoyable day.

German Longhaired Pointers

O (1) 

1st Speck’s Sarscottah Astro. Upstanding 2 year old male. Well balanced. Masculine head with kind, dark eye and good ear set. Strong neck leading to well laid shoulder and broad deep chest. Well ribbed back with strong muscular loin. Correct croup and well made, powerful hindquarters. Moved on a long, free stride. Absolutely no doubt that he could do a day in the field with ease. BOB

German Wirehaired Pointer

P (4, 1) 

1st Pinkerton’s Bareve Black to Black. Super smart puppy. Beautifully balanced. Excellent head shape with dark eye and high ear set. Strong neck leading to well laid shoulders. Deep in chest. Correct top line and well ribbed back. Strong, well muscled hind quarters used to advantage on the move. Excellent bone and feet. Moved soundly - true fore and aft and good open side gait. Excellent coat texture. BP and RBOB.

2nd Donnelly’s Kimmax Knock Yourself Out. A size larger than the winner and longer cast. Good head shape. I would like a darker eye. Strong neck leading to good lay of shoulder. Not holding his topline as well as the winner. Well made hindquarters. Steady movement.

3rd Jones’ Dregheda Desert Song.

J (2)

1st Donnelly’s Beechillawn Oooh Betty. Good overall balance. Well shaped head with dark eye and kind expression. I would like a little more layback of shoulder. Good depth of chest. Well ribbed back. Correct topline. Strong hindquarters with excellent bone and f eet. Excellent coat texture.

2nd Dregheda Desert Song. I would like to see a little more substance on this youngster. Pleasing head and expression. Reasonable depth of chest. Could lose some weight to advantage. Correct coat texture. Moved steadily.

PG (1)

1st Dooner’s Tynsil Vera. Excellent overall balance. Well shaped head with high ear set. Excellent shoulder with corresponding return of upper arm. Deep chest. Well ribbed back. Strong hindquarters with good bone and feet. In excellent coat. Moved well just not quite the drive of the top winners in the challenge.

O (2) 

1st Brewer & Pinkerton’s Bareve Bruevinka. What a lovely bitch. So full of breed type. Excellent overall balance with true head, dark eye and high earset. Clean neck leading through to copybook forequarters, deep chest and well ribbed back. Correct topline and tail set. Well made hindquarters with strong hocks. Excellent bone and feet. Correct coat texture. Sound driving movement and credit to her handler who got the best out of her. BOB

2nd Pinkerton’s Bareve Boschkloof. Upstanding male. Well balanced. Slightly longer cast than the winner. Good head with dark eye and high set ears. Correct layback of shoulder and length of upper arm. Well ribbed back with strong hindquarters. Moved with drive. Just needs time to come to his best.

Golden Retriever Bitches

I would like to thank everyone for their entry. I very rarely write a preamble on a breed that is not “my own”but I feel today I must say something. I was looking for a dog that was fit for function and that could, if asked, fulfil the task that it was originally bred for. An unsound dog would not last one drive in the shooting field - let alone a heavy day across plough. Movement today concerned me - as did lack of muscle tone. Above all a dog should be sound and fit for purpose. I was pleased with my winners. What was disappointing was the unnecessary behaviour after the judging had been completed.

MPB (6, 2)

1st Robbins & Rowark - Quakerhill Lady Bountiful by Brekswood. Well balanced all through. Clean head. I would like more width of muzzle. Good layback of shoulder. I would prefer a little more angulation of upper arm. Well ribbed back with short loin. Excels in hindquarters with super bone and well padded feet. Moved the best in class and continued to move soundly to win BPIB

2nd Douthwaite and Wharfe’s Gracewood Night Fever. Very typical bitch who lost out on maturity and movement to the winner today but I liked her a lot. Clean, well chiselled head with soft expression. Well laid back shoulder with corresponding return of upper arm. Well ribbed back with short loin. Excellent bone and feet. Just needs to settle in movement but a lovely puppy.

3rd Foreman’s Wynrita Got To Trot To Ambersun

PB (6, 1)

1st Quakerhill Lady Bountiful by Brekswood

2nd Jackson-Haines - Leighsham In The Summer Time. Longer cast than the winner. Super head with correct amount of chiselling beneath the eyes. Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder, Deep chest. I would like more length to the ribcage. Excellent bone and feet. Moved soundly.

3rd Loverick & Eddies - Thorneywait Mamma Mia

JB ( 5)

1st Scholes - Rossgilde Sea Lady. Well balanced with typical head and soft expression. Clean neck leading to well laid shoulder. Deep chest and well ribbed back. Short loin. Slightly short in croup. Strong hindquarters. Although a little “roly poly” on the move she had good drive and forward extension.

2nd Lewis’ - Lovehayne Bijou Among Fairwinds. Heavier in build than the winner. Typical head with kind expression. Clean neck leading to good shoulder and return of upper arm. Well ribbed but carrying a little too much weight. Well made hindquarters. I would prefer a better tail set. Moved soundly but not the drive of the winner.

3rd Whitefield - Amberdella Miracle Dancer

YB (5, 1)

1st Hill’s Tamniarn Forget Me Not Sanduala JW. I was very impressed with this young bitch and she pushed very hard for higher honours. Her immaturity on the day coupled with slight lack of furnishings paid the price but I will watch her with interest as I liked her very much. Excellent overall balance with typical head and good chiselling beneath the eyes. Clean neck leading through to good lay of shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm. Deep chest with well sprung rib cage and short loin. Excellent hindquarters, bone and feet. Moved well.

PGB (5, 2)

1st Healey’s Thorneywait Jillaroo for Marsabit. Well balanced all through. Clean head - I would like a little more chiselling beneath the eyes. Excellent shoulder and return of upper arm. Deep chest and well ribbed back. Correct topline and tail set leading through to well made hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet. Not quite the finish of my BB but a well deserved RBB and RBOB.

2nd Rossgilde Sea Lady

OB (4, 1)

1st Jackson-Haines - Leighsham Society Spice. My star of the day. Such lovely ring presence and put down in tip top order. Well balanced all through. Typical head with good chiselling beneath the eyes. Clean neck leading through to good layback of shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm. Deep chest with elbows tight to brisket. Well ribbed back. Loin of optimum length but within the standard. Level topline which she held stacked and moving. Strong, well muscled hindquarters with correct hock to heel placement. In excellent coat and condition. Moved well both fore and aft and with a good open side gait when viewed in profile. Best bitch. In the challenge for BOB she continued to give her best. The dog judge and I were not able to agree despite the fact that the dog was unsound in movement so the services of the Referee were required and I was delighted to see her rewarded with BOB.
