PASTORAL GROUP AND BEST IN SHOW. A very big thank you to the officeholders and committee for inviting me to judge the Pastoral group and in particular Best in Show at this large prestigious show. This society has been very kind to me and my mother over the years. They were the third society to ask me to judge 27 years ago, when I judged the Terrier group and have judged it twice since. Approximately 20 years ago my mother judged the Toy and Terrier groups, then judged Best in Show. She was very honoured and proud to be asked to judge a Best in Show at an Open show. During her lifetime, she had judged a vast amount of all breeds over the UK, India and New Zealand, but it was the only time she was asked to do Best in Show. Thank you to my very efficient stewards during a lot of the day, who I understood were drafted in at the last minutes. Also to my stewards at the end. It was such a shame I was nearly an hour & 20 minutes starting to judge, making me late all day. I had a wonderful entry, both quantity and quality. I was really spoilt for choice in the final of the Pastoral group and at the end of the show. Thank you to the exhibitors that had to wait so long. My top winners excelled in showmanship and movement, they were presented and handled to perfection.

BEST IN SHOW - Betts’ Bearded Collie, Pipadene Whiskey and Lace JW. A really lovely exhibit. Very feminine and a great example of the breed. Slate grey colour. Attractive feminine head, with sweet expression and toning eye colour. Great straight front with deep chest. Excellent neck, arching into sloping shoulders. Good bone for a feminine bitch. Correct length of ribcage and nice level back, always held on the move. Well-muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles and low hocks. Low set tail, carried correctly at all times. Her movement won her the top place, giving a true supple, smooth, long reaching action, covering the ground with minimum effort and a balanced side gait. Truly ‘Fit for Purpose’. Presented in perfect coat.

RESERVE BEST IN SHOW – Partridge’s Irish Setter, Kerrydown Octavia. A bitch I have admired for some time and was so pleased the group judge thought so highly of her. Now a beautiful mature well balanced bitch with well-proportioned head, dark eye and well set ears. Slightly arched neck, flowing into her lovely shoulders. Deep chest with good spring of rib. Good length of body and strong loin. Lovely topline and tail set. Powerful, muscled hindquarters with nice short hocks, enabling a free flowing movement with drive, commanding the ring. Shown in excellent coat.

BEST PUPPY IN SHOW – Allen, Smith & Rees’ Minature Pinscher, Telidor Thumbs up with Tinolucianna. Confident and full of enthusiasm, for a puppy so late in the day. Correct shaped, dark eyes. High set, small ears. Perfect scissor bite, good length of muzzle and underjaw. Nicely developed forechest, straight front with nice cat-like feet. Beautifully marked with a rich tan. Hindquarters have good turn of stifle. Moved around the large ring as if he owned it, in true hackney fashion.

RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW – Jones’ Dobermann, Korifey Dark Knight. Only six month old, but what a showman. Handled well and presented in good, hard condition for one so young. Classic head shape, well developed mouth, super neckline into well laid shoulders. Good forechest, well sprung ribs and correct belly tuck up. Straight topline sloping slightly from withers to croup flowing into the tail. Muscular hindquarters, well bent stifles, giving elastic, free, balanced movement with good reach in front and power from the hindquarters.

BEST VETERAN IN SHOW - Harris’ Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren), Delator Dionysus at Tolnedra ShCM. Almost eleven and a half, wonderful for his age. Correct finely chiselled head, balanced and in proportion. Super mouth and dentition. Distinctive triangular shaped ears. Excellent body structure, giving the impression of being powerful, but elegant. Level top line with slightly sloping rump. He had wonderful muscled hindquarters for his age and correct angulation, with hocks well let down. Nice feet. Excelled in movement with good parallel action, giving a free, even gait. In good coat with the characteristic double pigment. RESERVE BEST VETERAN IN SHOW – Lewis’ Cesky Terrier, Komidion Nickelodeon Avec Dajaces ShCM. Full of breed type. Good, relatively long head with distinct stop and arched skull. Nice dark eye and triangular shaped ears, set on high. Good scissor bite. Elegant and strong neck. Well laid shoulders and body in good condition with slight tuck up. Strong muscled hindquarters, giving him propulsive movement in a brisk and vigorous way. In lovely coat, slightly wavy with a silky sheen.

BEST RESERVE BOB IN SHOW – Smyth’s Retriever (Golden), Kadaka Kissagram. Still a puppy, but so balanced and mature. Super head, well proportioned, with lovely expression. Excellent front with deep chest and shoulders well laid back. Short coupled body, deep spring of rib, level topline with good bend of stifle. Round, cat-like feet. Moved with power and drive. Nice coat with good furnishings.

BEST CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS – Attwood’s Spaniel (Welsh Springer), Ir Sh Ch Moorash Lady Ygraine of Kylowen. It was very hard to pick the best from some lovely and worthy champions. My winner looked a true gundog, fit for a full day’s work in the field, she was full of breed type. Well-proportioned head with super eyes and ears. Good length of neck, set into sloping shoulders. Strong, muscular body, well proportioned. Hind quarters well-muscled and boned. Well set on tail, carried correctly. Covered the ground with smooth, powerful action. In good coat with silky texture.

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD GRADUATE (3) 1. Gladwell’s Jotars Shimmering Desire. Very impressed with this eye catching male, stands and shows to perfection. Well balanced, masculine and mature for 9 months old. Well-proportioned head with well-defined stop. Good eyes and super triangular ears set high. Correct length of neck flowing into shoulders. Good depth of chest. Strong, firm back with level topline. Well-turned stifles and hocks well let down. Lovely oval feet, with compact well arched toes. Moved free and easy. Fore and hind straight and converging at speed. Super double coat for a puppy dog so young. Best of Breed & Best Puppy in Breed. 2. Scanlan’s Allmark Fairy Tales of Franmar. Very feminine. Good, well- proportioned head. Strong body, well sprung ribs and level topline. Straight well boned forelegs. Balance in front & rear angulation. Strong hocks, displayed good reach & drive moved very sound all ways. 3. Richard’s Accra Mystical Man.

LIMIT (1) 1. West’s Love Story of Fender Song for Shepalian (Imp). Nice type of feminine bitch with attractive head. Super triangular shaped ears carried correctly. Good body with level topline and nice turn of stifle. Would have preferred more of a double coat. Moved OK.

OPEN (3) 1. Scanlan’s Mistyholly Blues Brother of Franmar ShCM. Super strong, well- proportioned head. Alert expression and used his super ears well. Straight forelegs & lovely feet. Nice length of neck, excellent body, well sprung ribs with level topline. Good turn of stifles with strong, well let down hocks and compact feet. Presented in good double coat and general condition. Excellent free and easy side gait, but not working well with handler to give a good fore and hind movement. Reserve Best of Breed. 2. West’s Amberslade Michigan at Shepalian CDEX UDEX WDEX. A lovely working dog. Not so masculine in head and body, as I would like. Good mouth and correct triangular ears, well set. Level topline and good turn of stifle. Regrettably, his coat was on the blow, which did not enhance his appearance.

BORDER COLLIE POST GRADUATE (3) 1. Garland’s Tonkory Royale. Very nice well- proportioned masculine head, with fairly broad skull. Good eyes and ear carriage. Super oval, compact strong feet. Very well proportioned and balanced, winning this class on his outline. Regrettably, not at his best, which appears to be common for 18 month old Border Collies. He was definitely going through the teenage phase, with his coat and not always moving well with his handler. Will mature into a lovely dog when he grows up! 2. MacCracken’s Tonkory on Top of the World with Cimmiekris. Very nice mature dog, with good head and ear carriage. Straight front, good bone and excellent compact feet. Deep chest, tight elbows, strong topline and lovely parallel, straight hocks. In superb double coat and general condition. It is a shame he lacks a bit of animation, as he could do so much better. 3. Wallwork’s Defying Gravity. Best Puppy in Breed.

OPEN (6) 1. Lampier’s Tonkory Mark Time (AI). A superb bitch, very feminine and a wonderful example of a Border Collie. Well proportioned, graceful and well balanced. It was such a shame she came in just her petticoats, as I was unable to shortlist her in a very strong pastoral group. Wonderful well-proportioned head with distinct stop, good eye and well set ears. Good straight, parallel forequarters and lovely compact feet. Nice length of body, level topline kept on the move. Good turn of stifle, with lovely straight parallel hocks. Correct tail set and length, never carried too high. She won her class and Best of Breed on her wonderful true Border Collie movement. Exactly as the breed standard – Free, smooth and tireless, with minimum lift of feet, conveying impression of ability to move with great stealth and speed. Best of Breed. 2. Verplancke’s Taranza Imagination ShCM. A very nice masculine dog. Super head and expression. Nice feet. Plenty of bone, good topline and strong muscled hindquarters with well laid down straight, parallel hocks. Good tail set, carried correctly. In wonderful double coat and excellently presented. Moved well. Reserve Best of Breed. 3. Garland’s Tonkory Doyle JW ShCM.

COLLIE (ROUGH) GRADUATE (2) 1. Gladwell’s Sunswirl Win Step to Jotars (Imp Blr). Beautiful puppy, won on expression, which is so important for Rough Collies. Perfect balanced head proportions. Lovely sweet expression of his almond eyes with excellent ear set, used to good effect. Straight forelegs with sufficient bone and compact, oval well arched feet. Good firm back with a slight rise over the loins. Nice hindquarters, well bent stifles and well let down hocks, straight and parallel. Moves with great action particularly in profile. In super coat for his age with undercoat, frills and feathering. Well handled and presented. Best Puppy & Reserve Best of Breed. 2. Scamp’s Stregato The Maleficent at Marketdene. Nice head, with correct eyes and skull shape. But not the expression of No 1. In lovely condition and correct length of body, with good topline. Moved well. Excellent for overall proportions. In really super coat and well presented.

OPEN (3) 1. Gladwell’s Ch. Monsolana Love N Kiss Jotars JW (imp Rus). A worthy champion. Another with the true Rough Collie expression. Correct well balanced head, well placed stop, with flat skull. Nice dark almond eyes and well set ears. Strong front and neat feet. Lovely arched neck leading into well laid shoulders. Good length of back with slight rise over the loins. Good tail set, bent stifles and low set hocks. Enabling her to move well with absolute soundness. Presented in beautiful coat and condition. A shame she did not have that extra sparkle to be placed in a strong pastoral group. Best of Breed. 2. Thorne’s Triforce Dragon Heart ShCM. Imposing and masculine boy, very well presented, with good showmanship. Scored over 3rd placing with head, expression and mouth. Good front and neck. Good bone. Moved very well. Tail set could be lower. In excellent condition and coat. 3. Ware’s Bella Bimba Della Buca Della Fate at Wassail.

WELSH CORGI (CARDIGAN) GRADUATE (5) 1. Burgoyne & Goddard’s Waterdeep Ranger One JW. Excellent example of the breed and so well balanced. Won the class on correct head shape, good mouth, feet and movement. Well-proportioned foxy head with moderate stop. Correct eyes, large ears well set on skull. Forearms correctly moulded round chest, which was broad and deep, well let down between forelegs. Elbows fitting closely to sides and standing on super feet. Super topline of good length, pleasing rib and firm loin. Nice tail for length, set and carriage. Well-muscled hindquarters with good turn of stifle and hocks well let down. Moving out well in profile, nice & free in front with typical action for the breed. Best of Breed. 2. Burgoyne & Goddard’s Swanpool Armarni. Nearly 7 years old and worthy of her placing. Good shaped head, but not quite as good as No 1. Mouth, front and feet very good. Correct body with level topline. Moved OK. Reserve Best of Breed. 3. Siviter’s Rubegud Takin The Mick ShCM. 4. May’s Brynlluan Buttercup at Giradellis. Best Puppy in Breed.

WELSH CORGI (PEMBROKE) POST GRADUATE (3) 1. Lee’s Balletcor Godric Gryffindor for Horcrux. Both very nice dogs, but this one won on maturity. Pleasing young male with lovely balanced outline. Correct shaped head with eyes that blended with his coat colour. Forearms correctly moulded round chest, which was broad and deep, well let down between forelegs. Elbows fitting closely to sides and standing on super feet. Well laid shoulders. Good body with level topline. Well muscled hindquarters with good angulated stifle and super straight hocks. This gave excellent free and active movement, with forelegs moving out and thrust from behind with minimum lift, correct for this breed. His movement helped him win his place. Best of Breed. 2. Lee’s Rhiew Ravens Royal Tower. What a sweetie and a true showman for 7 months old. Has many of the same attributes as his kennel mate. Good foxy head, chest, front, feet and level topline producing a well balanced outline. Well muscled hindquarters with good angulated stifle. Moved soundly and easy. In good coat and condition. Best Puppy in Breed.

OPEN (4) 1. Lee’s Balletcor Morning Symphony at Amenbury IR JUN CH ShCM. Much the same attributes as previous kennel mates. Super head and expression. Very smart dog with very balanced construction and good angulations. Moved excellently. Reserve Best of Breed. 2. May’s Barwal Basford Beauty at Giradellis. A different type. Very feminine with a sweet expression. Lovely teeth, ample bone, chest well let down, moved OK. Different feet to No 1.

BEARDED COLLIE POST GRADUATE (6) 1. Webb’s Megamaree Just Amazing ShCM. Maturity won his place in a class with some nice puppies. Looked a typical Bearded Collie. Well proportioned head with strength of muzzle and broad skull. Good overall shape with good length of body and excellent topline. Muscular, sound hindquarters. Scores on the move with an excellent profile and gait. Well presented and shown in full correct double coat. Reserve Best of Breed. 2. Campbell’s Chyanullys Diamond Drover. A very promising, lovely puppy. Super head with the most appealing eyes. They toned with his coat colour, being large, soft and affectionate. Straight front legs with good bone. Deep chest, good length of back with level topline. Well muscled hindquarters, well bent stifles and lovely low hocks. Moved exceptionately well with supple, smooth, long reaching strides, covering the ground with minimum of effort. Earning his place in the puppy group. Best Puppy in Breed. 3. Hawkins’ Thingamebob Hes All That.

Of good size and appeared longer on the leg. Good head and reach of neck. Well structured with Level topline. Nicely muscled and moved well. 3. Hawkins’ Thingamebob Hes All That.

FINNISH LAPPHUND LIMIT (2) 1. Critchlow & Hallett’s Pavoskas Ceili. Smart young bitch, still a puppy. Good well-proportioned head with nicely placed eyes and ears. Would like a little more definition in the stop. Super construction with nice firm body and good forechest. Producing a well balance dog of correct length. Moved very well with correct brisk action. Profuse coat with undercoat. Good colour, with correct striking markings. Best Puppy in Breed & Reserve Best of Breed. 2. Cooper’s Elbereth Kippis to Pavoskas ShCM. Veteran of 10 years old and good for his age. Excellent head. Good construction, bone and well-muscled. Very good side gait. Profuse of coat and undercoat of lovely colour and markings.

OPEN (3) 1. Cooper & Critchlow’s Pavoskas Aly Arttu JW ShCM. Won on maturity. Very masculine dog in full coat and good condition, enjoying his day out. Skull nicely rounded with short muzzle. Oval, dark, well set eyes. Moderate lay of shoulder & sufficient forechest. Well constructed body, firm and strong with good muscles. Correct set tail carried correctly. Nice feet. Moved well. Best of Breed. 2. Critchlow & Hallett’s Pavoskas Ceili. See above.

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG POST GRADUATE (5) Two completely different types of the breed. 1. Shaw’s Astradine Keepsake JW. Well-proportioned head with dark almond shaped eyes. Lovely straight front, well laid shoulders, good length of neck and deep chest. Well muscled, nice strong hocks with rounded feet and good angulation. This resulted in true, powerful, sound movement with thrust. In good coat and lovely colour. Reserve Best of Breed. 2. Keen’s Clokellys Zanita. Very much a puppy. Both handler and dog need more training, but the puppy could mature into a good dog. Very nice head. Looked very good in profile. Good angulation with lovely round feet. Needs more practice in moving. Best Puppy in Breed.

OPEN (3) 1. Shaw’s Astradine Kornishman JW. The dog I would have loved to have taken home! I grew up with GSDs and showed one much like this in child handling classes. A very handsome, imposing dog, really lovely. Well proportioned head of good length and breadth. Hazel almond eyes to match his colouring, giving him a lovely expression. Good ear set. Good forechest, neck and lay of shoulders, with good bone. Solid topline and good overall proportions. Good turn of stifle, thighs well developed, very good strong hocks enabling sound, good drive, travelling around the ring with ease. In excellent coat of a lovely colour. Best of Breed.

SAMOYED POST GRADUATE (3) 1. Prout’s Amarige Armani Diamonds at Furzeland. Won the class and BOB on excellent movement. Very striking with the ‘smiley expression’. Immaculately presented. Stunning head, powerful without any coarseness. Nice medium brown almond eye, with dark lip and nose pigment. Strong neck, good lay of shoulder, deep chest and well boned. Very muscled with well angulated stifles. Well let down straight hocks. Giving free, strong powerful movement with elegance, holding his topline. Nice tailset. In excellent coat and condition. Best of Breed. 2. Prout’s Furzeland Devon Diamond. Nice head, smiling expression and correct pigmentation. Good outline and moved OK, but did not seem to be working with handler. In Good coat, but not as good as No 1. 3. Meakin & Turner’s Plyushka Gypsy Lunar Star.

OPEN (4) 1. Prout’s Furzeland Devon Warrior. Won the class on movement, mouth and pigmentation. Super head and expression. Well used ears added to his appeal. Sufficient length of neck. Good chest, topline and bend of stifle. Well boned legs with good angulation. Good topline held on the move. In good coat. Reserve Best of Breed. 2. Winger’s Samarinds Shock Wave for Syanaria ShCM. Liked his shape and proportions. Well presented, in excellent condition with a very well textured coat. Pleasing head, well balanced, flat skull. Well set ears. Dark eyes. Correct length of neck. Has a good front with correct width of chest. Well angulated stifle and correct shaped feet. 3. Meakin & Turner’s Sarnoushka Penny Lane at Plyushka ShCM.

BRIARD OPEN (3) 1. Jacobs-Pearce’s Salieri Heaven Knows at Arundall. Well-proportioned head, define stop with square muzzle. Dark eyes well open, giving lovely expression, with matching black pigment. Excellent scissor bite. Arched neck of good length, well laid shoulders & a strong firm topline held on the move. Well balanced with good angulations. Moved OK. Would have liked a bit more body, but she was not in full coat. Best of Breed. 2. Hillier Rogers & Gardner’s Ch. Etrerat Du Tchibo D’Ebene by Charson (Imp Hun). A lot to like about this very imposing dog. However, he was not on his best behaviour and did not seem to want to work with his handler. In beautiful, full coat. Moved well. Reserve Best of Breed.

HUNGARIAN PULI OPEN (2) 1. Conibere’s Adnama Puli Magic. Nicely proportioned head with short muzzle. Correct mouth with scissor bite. Dark roof with bright red tongue. Straight forelegs with good lay of shoulder. Well bent stifles. Correct movement for this breed. Coat nicely corded. Best of Breed.

BEAUCERON OPEN (3) 1. Burrough’s Chiceron Miss Marple. A very nice bitch looking very fit for purpose. Correct head with nice mouth having full dentition. Quite feminine, but was well bone. Clean, muscular, straight forelegs, chest wide and deep. Firm, level back of correct length. Well muscled hind quarters, with double dewclaws set close to foot. Moved effortless and free. Nice coat, with all the correct tan markings. Best of Breed. 2. Harrell’s Chiceron Endeavour with Beaukita. He seemed rather unsettled, which was a shame. He had a complete dentition and characteristic double dewclaws set close to foot. A nice type of dog. In good coat with the correct tan markings. Let himself down on the move. Reserve Best of Breed. 3. Harrell’s Pebbleena’s Millie Murphy with Beaukita.

POLISH LOWLAND SHEEPDOG OPEN (4) 1. Burdett-Coutts’ Dobrany Dorianblue Odyssi. Nicely proportioned head with well-defined stop and wide nostrils. Straight forelegs, strong neck, correctly proportioned body with level topline. Strong oval feet. Well angulated hindquarters producing good movement. Nicely presented in full coat with dense, shaggy harsh overcoat and soft undercoat. Best of Breed. 2. Roberts’ Ponadto Winter Wizard to Roloki (Imp Pol) NAF. First show at 9 months old and still very much a puppy. Well-proportioned head. Good body with level topline. Nicely muscled with good rear angulation. Moved well. Best Puppy & Reserve Best of Breed. 3. Sweet’s Chrevle Zophire ShCM.

ANY VARIETY NOT SEPARATELY CLASSIFIED PASTORAL JUNIOR (2) Both very nice puppies. 1. Hackney’s Swedish Vallhund, Starvon Bring It On. Correct blunt wedged head with flat skull. Dark eye with well filled muzzle. Good ear placement. Excellent scissor bite. Well laid shoulders with good depth of chest & tidy elbows. Well sprung ribs. Level topline retained on the move. Moved well. In good coat with excellent shading in all the right places. Best A.V.N.S.C. Pastoral Puppy. 2. Harris’ Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren), Hawksflight Aramis for Tolnedra. Super chiselled head of good ratios with correct ear set. Nice slightly almond shaped eyes, pincer bite. Good body. Moved extremely well in a brisk, free, even action, correct for the breed. Presented in excellent coat with long harsher outer coat and soft undercoat. Correct colouring with characteristic double pigment. Nice tight feet. Handled very well.

POST GRADUATE (3) 1. Jordan-Davis’ Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren), Blackfyre Nefarious Intentions (Imp USA). Well- proportioned chiselled head. Nice eyes with well-placed ears. Scissor bite. In super condition. Parallel forelegs and good shoulder placement. Correct body shape. In really super coat with long harsher outer coat and soft undercoat. Correct colouring with characteristic double pigment. Showed well and moved OK. Reserve Best A.V.N.S.C. Pastoral. 2. Thorne’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Kricarno Konstellation at Pyrajay. Good sized dog, in excellent condition and bone for a large dog. Strong head, but would have preferred a more gentle slope from skull to muzzle. Nice outline. Characteristic double dewclaws on each hindleg. Not moving at his best.

OPEN (3) 1. Hackney’s Swedish Vallhund, Starvon All About Me. Lovely breed type and what a character. Correct blunt wedged head with good stop. Nice front and strong neck set onto well laid shoulders. Level topline retained on the move. Good hind angulation. Moved extremely well, with a free and active action with powerful thrust from the rear. In super coat, harsh topcoat and abundance of undercoat. Correct colour with lovely markings. Best A.V.N.S.C. Pastoral. 2. Jordan-Davis’ Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren), Norlyght Omatikaya. Very graceful older lady. Good head and expression with correct ear placement. Nice neck going into long and oblique shoulder blades and deep chest well let down. Balanced throughout. Moved OK. In excellent coat and colour with long harsher outer coat and soft undercoat. Correct colouring with characteristic double pigment.

ANY VARIETY PASTORAL PUPPY (10) 1. Haensel’s Shetland Sheepdog, Sherkarl Majic Touch. Very mature for age. Perfectly balanced head, with almond shaped eyes, giving a sweet expression. Well set ears. Balanced outline, good body and well angulated hind quarters. Nice bone and feet. Sound movement. Presented in excellent double coat – harsh textured outer coat and soft undercoat. 2. Betts’ Bearded Collie, Rembrand Chunkie Munchie. Super looking young male. In excellent coat, head and body proportions. Moved extremely well. 3. Jackson’s Bearded Collie, Bronyhill Wizard Wizzes to Crestasan.

VETERAN (16) A lovely exhibit of some gorgeous veterans, who must have been well looked after through their lives. 1. Harris’ Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren), Delator Dionysus at Tolnedra ShCM.
