Sports Connexion – Ryton On Dunsmore

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge their 50th centenary show and to my steward who kept me on track – thanks Ben.

I hope the major winners liked the special ring clips - many thanks to Toni Dennis (Tarryndale – Aus).

This was my 5th time awarding CC’s and unfortunately a couple of area have declined in the 10 years since I first awarded my first set of CC’s. Dentition is definitely becoming a problem and needs to be addressed urgently. My other area of concern is the tendency for under angled return of forearm, which seems to becoming the norm, rather than the exception and contributes to the lack of front extension when moving. In general exhibits were clean and well presented.

Class 1 – Any Colour Veteran Dog (1-0): -

1. Cox’s Sh Ch Gardenstone Pale Rider to Suvern JW – BVD and BVIS

Black and White dog shortlisted for the CC who impressed for his overall balance and excellent footfall. Lovely head with dark eye making for a soft appealing expression. Well angulated shoulders with matching return of forearm, well off for substance. Well sprung ribs and short backed. Kudos, as he was not being handled by his usual handler and he did not miss a stride.

Class 2 – Black / Black & Tan Puppy Dog (1-0): -

1. Thomas’ Claramand Limpopo Flash Harry

Very raw black and tan, who has time on his side. Lovely head, tight eye and kind expression. Enough heart room, strong bone and level topline. Well placed shoulders and had plenty of muscle at quarters,

Class 3 – Black / Black & Tan Special Undergraduate Dog (1-0): -

1. Grist’s Kasordon Firestarter

Pleasing headed black, with a square muzzle, masculine without coarseness. Clean throated and good substance with the best of feet. Short backed and stood four square. Needs to mature in his head as he was quite erratic on the move. He moved better and calmed himself in his later class, which got him his placing.

Class 4 – Black / Black & Tan Special Open Dog (3-0): -

1. Kew’s Lujesa Starman at Wyleview

Good black who was well balanced on the move, which won him this class. Masculine head with a lovely expression. Well off for substance and had excellent tight feet. Level topline and went around the ring with drive and purpose, assisted by his well muscled quarters. Not the easiest of coats but put down well.

2. Farebrother’s Lilyvale Charmer

Longer cast black than 1st, pleasing head and eye, good bone and substance, well sprung ribs. Good tight feet, matching angles fore and aft.

3. McShane’s Obsidian Spring Marvel at Meggiemac

Class 5 - Red / Golden / Liver / Liver & Tan Special Puppy Dog (0-0)

Class 6 - Red / Golden / Liver / Liver & Tan Special Undergraduate Dog (0-0)

Class 7 - Red / Golden / Liver / Liver & Tan Special Open Dog (3-0): -

1. Ellison’s Sh Ch Withiflor Rolling Stone JW

Well known red whose many attributes have been detailed. For me to today, he has a well balanced head and tight dark eye, but requires more plushness in eyes to soften expression. Plenty of depth and heart room, short coupled, good width to rear end and held his topline on the move.

2. Mason’s Sandlauga Soul Man

All in good order with this boy, bigger type than 1st. Pleasing head and eye, good length to neck, plenty of depth and width to front. Moved well with level topline and was well muscled.

3. Pop’s Manacas Double Ideas with Bocablue

Class 8 – Any Other Colour Special Puppy Dog (1-0): -

1. Mc Shane’s Quattrozampe It’L Be Reyt at Meggiemac

Raw blue boy, who with some additional weight would be to his advantage. Needs to break in head, but tight dark eye. Adequate width to chest, tight small feet, short in loin. Was a little erratic on the move.

Class 9 – Any Other Colour Special Junior Dog (4-2): -

1. Birkenshaw’s Gilcar Midnight Dream

Pleasing headed dark blue, not the biggest but impressed on overall confirmation, matching shoulders and return of forearm, ample width to chest, deep brisket with well sprung ribs. Stood on excellent feet and had substance a plenty. Moved well driving from well muscled quarters. In the final run off his immaturity showed, but one to watch for the future.

2. Cassidy’s Manchela Speechless at Cassoz

Lighter blue with a masculine head without a hint of coarseness. Appealing expression with a tight dark eye. Matching angles all through, good width at front and rear. A really nice example of the breed and unlucky to meet 1st.

Class 10 – Any Other Colour Special Undergraduate Dog (3-2): -

1. Pop’s Thomas’ Claramand Cosmopolitan

Typical blue from this kennel, pleasing head and eye, clean neck, good bone and nice feet. Pleasing length to neck set into well angulated shoulders. Moved well holding a level topline.

Class 11 – Any Other Colour Special Open Dog (5-1)

1. Armstrong’s Sh Ch Glenbriar Grand Dezign (Imp Aus)

A worthy Sh Ch, best of heads, masculine without being coarse, melting expression and tight dark eye. Excellent lay of shoulder, matched with exemplary return of forearm. Plenty of heart room and deep in brisket. Well of for substance, moved out really well using his well muscled quarters to drive around the ring with a level topline. Unfortunately, in the challenge he started to raise his tail, which spoilt his outline compared to his movement in this class.

2. Craig’s Nicibec Misunderstood JW

A dog I have often admired from the ringside and wasn’t disappointed on handling. Best of heads with a melting expression. Well laid shoulders and matching return of forearm, great width to front and deep bodied. Moved excellently using his tail to advantage. Loved his rump, just thought he was moving a tad close today. Presented well with a difficult coat.

3. Squire & Adam’s Corazon Se Sibi Night Star (imp Esp)

4. Lowery’s Amaroanne Theos JW

Class 12 – Minor Puppy Dog (3-1): -

1. Bevis & Noire-Miller Popocatepetl Tomfoolery (BMPD & BPD)

Orange and White baby, with a lovely head, eye and pigmentation. Excellent front assembly for one so young. Plenty of substance, best of ribs with the depth and width to front. Pleasing width to rear and was happy on the move and used his tail to advantage.

2. Harrison’s Glenbrows Silver Lining

Different type to 1st, more elegant in outline but still all male. Pleasing head and eye, correct and clean shoulders. Matching angles at front and back. With maturity and confidence should trouble the best.

Class 13 – Puppy Dog (4-2): -

1. Holland’s Crimcar Indigo Magic

Bigger type than 2nd, bur correct for size. Pleasing balanced head with square muzzle and tight dark eye. Good bone with tight feet. Good width to front and deep in brisket. Good angulation all through. Short in loin and moved well. Would benefit from being trimmed to show off his excellent shape.

2. Ray & Challand’s Annilan Mister Mai Tai

Blue dog who needs slightly more work in head for me, that said, an appealing expression. Clean over shoulders, short in back with a short loin. Moved well with a level topline.

Class 14 – Junior Dog (3-0)

1. Wiggins’ Snowgate Onyer Bike to Scapafield

Red dog of good body proportions. Pleasing shaped head with good width to muzzle. Good substance with small feet. Well angled clean shoulders leading into a short backed body. Moved out well with short let down hocks.

2. Gorka’s Esqueen A Star Is Born

Requires more work in head, kind dark eye. Excellent width to front and depth of chest. Good angles throughout, short in in loin. Moved out well holding topline.

3. Marshall’s Wissant Very Special Agent

Class 15 – Yearling Dog (3-0)

1. Saunders’ Carmelfair Corocenzo at Oxfordogs - RCC

My notes say cracking dog, loved him for breed type. Nothing overdone and well balanced when moving which was when he shone. Loved his head any eye and soft appealing expression. Excel’s in muscle tone in both first and second thigh. Good width and depth, short backed and short in loin. Good width to rear end.

2. Share-Jones Sharemead Hendricks

Heavier and bigger dog than 1st. Pleasing head and eye, well placed shoulders, big ribs, deep brisket. Moved well covering the ground easily, used his tail to advantage.

3. Bowen’s Larath Hobsons Choice

Class 16 – Novice Dog (4-1)

1. Thomas’ Claramand Cracker

Orange boy I shortlisted for the CC, just lacked maturity in his middle piece in my final considerations. Gorgeous head piece with dark eyes and excellent pigmentation. Well made with everything in good order, correct angles all through. Moved well holding his topline with precise foot fall.

2. Cassidy’s Manchela Speechless at Cassoz

See previous

3. Marsden’s Chativore Winter Solstice

Class 17 – Graduate Dog (4-2)

1. Torbett’s Kirlinjis Taylor Made

Another typey blue from this kennel whom I shortlisted for the CC and was up with the front runners. Lovely proportioned head with kind dark eye. Good length of neck set into fine clean shoulders, with matching return of forearm. Adequate heart room, rib’s a plenty. Short in loin, well muscled hind quarters and moved well holding topline.

2. Fajardo’s Glowhill Spicks and Specks at San Matayo

A light blue, a different type to 1st, a real honest cocker with a lot to like. Pleasing head with biddable expression. Short backed and short coupled, moved out well, using his tail to advantage. Well muscled hind quarters.

Class 18 – Post Graduate Dog (7-2

1. Brennan’s Covenant Celtic Prince of Kerrijoy

Not the biggest black but has everything in correct order. Well balanced head with a melting expression. Correct lay of shoulder with matching return of forearm, excellent front extension. Good substance and small feet, short coupled and well muscled hind quarters, which provided for the correct drive from the rear.

2. McBrides’ Topday Jo’s Dan The Man

Good blue who appealed for breed type. Appealing head and kind dark eye, plenty of heart room and well off for substance. Stood on best of feet and moved with drive and purpose. Pushed 1st hard.

3. Share-Jones Sharemead The Conqueror

4. Thorpe & Harrison Look Man Of Magic for Archby

5. Durrance’s Annilan Mister Blackjack at Shannakiel

Class 19 – Special Beginners Dog (3-1)

1. Drivers Annilan Mister Spangles at Beckaby

Blue dog well made with a pleasing outline and good shape. Liked his head and eye and had matching angles fore and aft. Level topline when moving, good substance and small feet.

2. Marsden’s Chativore Winter Solstice

Bigger type of blue, longer in loin that 1st yet still balanced. Good width to front and depth to well sprung ribs. Excellent substance and moved well holding topline.

3. Reader’s Cachel Beachboy at Kaniboo

Class 20 – Limit Dog (5-0)

1. Keely’s Oakbeach Dare To Dream Big with Alhambian

Dark blue, well made all through, not the easiest of coats and put down in good order. Appealing head and eye, correct shoulder placement and matching return of forearm, plenty of depth and width. Well muscled quarters and mature in middle piece. Moved well with the best front extension in the class.

2. Lowery’s Amaroanne Apollo JW

Appealing blue pushed 1st hard. Lovely head and eye providing for lovely expression. Good matching angles all through, short in back and stood four square. Moved well with drive and purpose.

3. Whitehead’s Casanova Of La Vie Magnifique

4. Thomas’ Claramand The Flasher

5. Thorpe & Harrison Look Man Of Magic for Archby

Class 21 – Open Dog (7-0)

1. Brennan’s Kerrijoy Maserati – CC

A new one to me but caught my eye when entering the ring and I was not disappointed on handling. Balanced head piece with a kind dark eye, square muzzle with deep flews, providing for a classic male cocker head. Correct angles at front and rear, deep in brisket and correct ribbing, short in back with correct coupling. On the move held topline and had great front extension. Great shape to him and put down to perfection. Was pleased to award him the CC and was RBIS on the referee’s decision.
