Guildford & District Canine Society

Open Show – 23 October 2022

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at this lovely show. What a great atmosphere there was all day – what other show could have enjoyable tannoy announcements, and the added bonus of a bit of Abba playing in the background?!

AVNSC Terrier

P (1) 1 Agnellino Faith No More. Well grown youngster who was extremely well presented and in first class order, what a delight to go over. Appeals in head shape and overall structural balance. Moved out very well, even if she demonstrated her cheeky nature at times! BP & PG4.

J (3,2) 1 Grevenia Higwen Amber Queen. Nice to go over on the table, but moved rather too fast. In good body and condition and has useful construction under her well groomed coat (even if the venue wasn’t to the benefit of her coat today!).

PG (5,2) 1 Sif The Goddess. This is quite an eye catching young exhibit as she free stands so easily and correctly, there is nothing to hide. Appeals in head shape, with strength yet femininity all through. Well balanced fore and aft, she was presented in good order and just the right amount of condition. Stands up on good feet, and moved on a powerful stride. In excellent coat and skin. BNSC. 2 Mishada Pearls A Singer. Beautifully headed Dandie with that characteristic big bright eye and a good strength in jaw, with lovely furnishings. Useful construction to appreciate when going over on the table, however she just wasn’t quite giving it her all on the move today and whilst she did enough to demonstrate her good length of stride, she could do with a little more verve. 3 Ceilmear Close Encounter.

O (6,3, 1 withdrawn) 1 Sif The Goddess. 2 Jenina Jive Bunny. I really liked this Australian and whilst she wasn’t entirely happy at being gone over at first she soon settled and on second attempt she was quite happy for me to be able to appreciate her well made structure under her harsh straight coat. Liked her length of head and strength in jaw, and she also appealed on the move. RBNSC.

AV Terrier

Veteran (10,3) This was a lovely class to judge with many of the exhibits belying their years. What a great advert they all are for the longevity of terriers. Some weren’t happy with the surface today and this was reflected in some placings. 1 Ralf of House Nash. Smart and showy at a young seven years, he didn’t give up through this class and never stopped showing himself off. Liked his head size and length of muzzle, neck, shoulder and topline. Moved out very well and despite his short legs made the best of the ground today. 2 Chatmoss Bullet Tooth Tony. Another at just seven years of age, but quite the showman and has a hint of arrogance daring you to go past him. Presented in excellent coat and good body. 3 Ch Komidion Night Music at Sametova.

Border Terrier

P (7,2) 1 Glebeheath Oh Boy. I have enjoyed watching this chap from the ringside over the summer and he has appealed; hands on and close up he doesn’t disappoint. Smart headed young man, with a keen attitude and great personality. Liked his overall conformation all through, and his balance of body to leg length. Demonstrated his personality on the move as he is quite a showman, and has accurate footfall away and back and covers enough ground going around. Free stands beautifully to show himself off to best advantage. RBOB & BP & PG2. 2 Etterbern The Empress. Very pretty young b with a lovely head, however she was a bit overawed by the venue at her first show. Liked her overall construction and balance, and she has excellent coat and skin already. Did enough on the move to show her soundness, and will only get better with time and age. 3 Lynsett Miss Lily.

J (4,1) 1 Tulawyn Garretson by Onthill. Well grown young man presenting a typical outline of balance. Head needs to balance up and this will come with time. Presents a very smart picture free stood which makes him difficult to overlook. Very sound mover, particularly in hind action. 2 Etterbern Ace of Wands. Brand new and fresh out, this young d had lots of appeal. Scores in head, shoulder and upper arm, ribbing and hind angles. Well angled behind and when settled he moves out well. Another who needs time. 3 Ceilloch Griffin at Onziemehurst.

G (6,1) Bit of a mixture of shapes and sizes in this class. 1 Awbrooksky Breath A Sigh. Presents and attractive picture stood up as her handler gets the very best from her and free stands her perfectly. Going around she demonstrates her moderate construction on the go, and powers along with happy attitude. 2 Arunmere Annie Oakley. Decent headed b with a good strong topline and well set tail. In good muscular order and fitness. 3 Onthill Crystal Clear To Foxpaw.

O (8,5) 1 Ch Awbrooksky Never Back Down. Smart upstanding d who wasn’t going to be overlooked today. He appeals in all departments and his handler gets the very best from him standing and on the move. He free stands up nicely when asked and his eagerness to please shines through. Liked his head shape and balance, eyes, and ears. Is well balanced in his fore and rear angles, which produce a tidy action going around with plenty of ground coverage. In perfect weight and extremely fit. BoB & G1. 2 Onthill Amatetii Rock. Rather different in outline to 1, would prefer more length to foreface. A sounds and honest sort presented in good order.

Cesky Terrier

J (4,1) 1 Runiks Akreepa of Dragons. Put on the best performance in this class, and whilst they were all youngsters and will be fairly new to the job, this young chap was the most balanced and together on the move today. Head looks to be coming along nicely with length and strength and a good big nose. Liked his balance of angles in front and behind which he used to advantage on the move. Well presented and handled. 2 Komidion Sonata for Sametova. A very promising youngster who was lovely to go over. Well balanced, strong but feminine, and in very good condition. Didn’t particularly want to play ball on the move today sadly. 3 Moraira Abel.

O (4,1) 1 Ch Ashleyheath’s Black Thunder. Quality sort whom I was astounded to find out was 9 years old. Quite belies his years, but is testament to the fact that well constructed soundly made animals last the test of time. Excellent to over, scores in head with excellent jaws and teeth, strong neck, topline, and well ribbed. Great width to first thigh and high hocks which were used to great advantage on the move. BoB. 2 Placido Musical Miracle at Runiks. A shade longer in outline that 1, and a more pronounced rise over the topline to the loin. Another who was presented in first class coat and order. 3 Sametova Bacary.

Jack Russell Terrier

P (1) 1 All Jacks To Tiltser With Love. What a superstar and exciting prospect! I was told this was her first show, which is so hard to believe as she shows like an absolute pro and never put a foot wrong all day. Every time I cast my eye upon her she was free standing perfectly with all feet pointing in the right direction. Super head which has strength and is very feminine, with her eyes giving a mischievous glint! Scores in construction throughout, she is so well made and balanced, sound and honest. A super little mover with balance and a good length of stride with accuracy of footfall away and back. A start of the future and one whose progress I shall watch with interest – good luck! BoB, BP, G2 & PG1.

J (1) 1 Pigeon Post. Strongly made chap whom you could well imagine doing a days work as he has a usefulness about him. He is good to go over, not an ounce too much weight, and in perfect muscular order. Clearly lucky enough to be afforded plenty of exercise.

PG (1) 1 Cooleela Manguri. Quite well grown but presents a tidy typical picture on the table. Clearly very well looked after at home, she could do with losing some timber to refine her in body. Very tidy mover going way and back, and holds her topline and tail well going around. RBoB.

Terrier Group

Group 1 had to be the Border Terrier, he came and conquered – never put a foot wrong and never stopped showing right to the end. Well done. 2 the very exciting JRT, who despite her tender years could absolutely not be denied in this company. 3 was the Norwich Terrier, Ragus Oh Boy, who is a real upstanding sort with great breed attributes. Very good to handle on the table, excellent coat and body, and a very good mover. Group 4 went to the lovely Cesky Terrier.

Terrier Puppy Group

First and second spots were closely fought out here, however the JRT judge edged ahead to take PG1 in front of the Border Terrier who had to settle for a credible PG2 today. Third was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Tradwen Ruby Tuesday at Haidastaff, whose head and overall outline I really liked. Presented in superb condition, very fit and with great coat and skin. Completing the quartet of lovely youngsters in this super puppy group was the Cesky who had really got her act together in this puppy group and went very well.

Retriever (Golden)

P (6,4) 1 Thornywait Starshine at Cherrimar. Smart youngster who is coming along nicely with everything in the right place for her age. Liked her head shape and balance, pigment, and eyes and expression. Well laid shoulder, strong in topline for age, and well set on tail. Uses her well muscled quarters to advantage on the move. BP and really pleased to hear went on to win PG1. 2 Pennbeacon Hey Jude at Maplerose. New baby to the job enjoying him time out which was great to see. Liked his head and expression.

J (4,2) 1 Kelbadora Dream of Dreams with Toddrosa. Neat feminine young b with a good outline. Scores in head, topline, ribbing, and width of thigh. Moved out very well from her low hocks. RBoB. Was told this gives her enough points for her JW, congratulations! 2 Shinehill Good As Gold. Handler really needs to get to grips with the job to show this nice youngster to better advantage – keep practicing!

N (4,2) 1 Kelbadora Dream of Dreams with Toddrosa. 2 Shinehill Good As Gold.

SY (1) 1 Shinehill Good As Gold.

G (1) 1 Sunnyoak Silver Bullet at Grayales. Well grown chap of larger size. Would prefer cleaner eyes. In fit condition.

PG (1) 1 Mossburn Golly Miss Molly. Sound, honest, moderate and balanced. Nothing to excess in this b which appeals to me greatly. Liked her proportions of body to leg length. Has a lovely head and expression. Could move with a bit more enthusiasm. BoB.

OD (2,1) 1 Maplerose All Tuckered Out. Strongly made chap in good order and presented in good coat. Well ribbed back. A shade loose in front action coming on, and would prefer a little more leg length for his height.

OB (4,1) 1 Aymsbury Akaysha. What a grand older lady, in such good order for her age I was really impressed when going over her. What a great credit to her owner to have this 11 year old in such excellent order, and still showing to great advantage as well. 2 Summeramba Twizzle at Cherrimar. Appears on initial inspection older than she looks, but is nicely to go over and in good order. 3 Shinehill Good As Gold.

Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling)

It is always a pleasure to judge this lovely breed, however I would like to make just one comment. When asked to move a dog, faster is not always better. Too many were gaited around the ring at far too great a speed which spoils their outline, and the dog compensates by displacing their feet when moving and producing an untidy action. A more controlled steadier gait would suit many of todays exhibits.

J (6,2) 1 Tollisty You Can’t Decline. Moved the best in this class on the go around and handler moved him at a decent pace throughout to get the best from him. Just a youngster with some growing on and maturing to do of course, I liked him in all departments and he will continue to get better with age I am sure. Shows off his balance and soundness of construction on the free stack, and these attributes are used to advantage on the move where he is sound and accurate. 2 Acadiabyrne Tibetan Coral. Shade stronger and more developed in head than 1 at present, this is another with a good clean outline and well proportioned and angled all through. Nice to go over, presented in good order. 3 Tollisty Out To Get You.

PG (7,3) 1 Acadiabyrne Tibetan Coral. 2 Tollelkin Dream Dancer. Very feminine in outlook and I have to commend the presentation of this b here (as with all from this kennel I might add). Clearly afforded plenty of the right sort of exercise, her weight was absolutely spot on and she is incredibly fit with very well developed first and second thighs. 3 Tollelkin Dream Harbour.

O (6,1) 1 Tivalake Let’s Misbehave. This d is lovely to go over, but really excels on the move and his handler gets the very best out of him. Uses every inch of his well constructed body to advantage going around, where he produces a sound economic stride with excellent length of stride, no over-reaching, and accuracy of footfall. In first class order and well handled. In the challenge he just lowered his head and went around with such ease to take BoB. 2 Tollelkin Caife American. Better in head than 1, but a shade shorter in upper arm which was reflected on the move going around where he couldn’t’ quite match 1’s length of stride. Another very good typical sort with many positives which took him to RBoB in this good company. 3 Tollisty Moet Et Chandon.

AV Graduate Stakes (39,5) Wow, what a great class! How fantastic to have so many of the entry forward – this made for some tough decisions!

1 Araki Areu The Queen Of Bees for Stylaxian. What a little superstar, I was so impressed with this young TT. Great to go over on the table, with a beautiful head and expression. Under her immaculate coat is a great body, with balance in construction, length of rib, and excellent musculature for age. Really excellent mover, tidy away and back and goes around with great carriage. Ticks all the boxes for me. Has a very endearing character 2 Sassychi Jamaica Mistaica. Very classy young shih tzu with a beautiful head shape and big clean eyes. Lovely to go over with excellent ribbing, and moved out very well which was no mean feat for the short legged dogs on this surface. Presented in first class order and well handled. 3 Mossburn Galloping Major.
