Terrier Club Of Devon And Cornwall
Thank you to the Officer Holders and Committee for inviting me to be a ‘stand in’ judge for Gill Thomas, who was unable to carry out the appointment. My mother and I had been great supporters of this club in the past. I was very delighted and honored to judge some breeds, the variety classes and the top awards for this south western terrier show. A special thank you to my excellent stewards.
BEST IN SHOW: - France’s Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Ch. Int. & Multi. Ch. Back to my Roots at Luna Caprese with Torbrae (Imp Deu). A very worthy champion, showing real showmanship and class. Presented and handled to perfection. Strong head, in proportion to body size. Square skull with well domed forehead, topped off with a super ‘topknot. Good large, strong teeth set in strong jaws. Dark eyes, set well apart, giving a delightful expression. Correct ears, strong neck into well laid shoulders and chest well let down. Long body with a super ‘Dandie’ topline, held on the move. Not exaggerated, but everything flowed nicely. Well-muscled hindquarters with angulated stifles and well-let down hocks. Assisting him with excellent movement, striding out in front and propulsion from the rear. Good tail set carried well. Finished off with an excellent pepper coat, which is so important in this breed. His profile and hind movement excels.
RESERVE BEST IN SHOW: - Somers’ Kerry Blue Terrier, Catachgorm Checkmate by Dogazza (AI)(AXI). Another true showman. Very smart and balanced, showing a wonderful outline when stacked that cannot be ignored. Needs to mature more to gain his full potential. Well balanced long head with flat skull. Dark eyes, well set ears and good bite. Strong, reachy neck into sloping shoulders. Well boned, straight front legs. Short, compact body with deep chest and level top line. Well-developed hindquarters with bent stifles and low hocks. Well set tail. Free and powerful movement. Coat of correct texture and colour.
TERRIER GROUP THREE: - Tanton-Joy’s Border Terrier, Orangebox a New Hope at Itsaso. A very attractive bitch. Lovely ‘Otter’ type head, fairly broad in skull and short strong muzzle. Dark eyes with keen expression and small well-set ears. Good length of neck and correctly placed shoulders. Lovely straight front, with good chest and ribs. Spannable with correct pelt. Strong hindquarters and good tail set. Holding correct topline on the move. Harsh coat. Moved well, straight and with purpose.
TERRIER GROUP FOUR: - Thomson’s West Highland White Terrier, Ashgate Kelvin. Judged him as a baby puppy and thought he had loads of promise, maturing well. Well balanced with a super expression and gay attitude. Well balanced head, dark eyes, good ear placement and correct month. Good length of neck, well laid shoulders with a straight front. Compact body with strong powerful hindquarters. Correct tail set and very good movement.
BEST PUPPY IN SHOW: - Girling’s Border Terrier, Benattivo Charlie Brown. Just fell for this chap, in fact I couldn’t take my eyes off him. So balanced and confident, showing his head off. Correct ‘otter’ head, good skull and muzzle. Nice neck, shoulders and straight front legs. Good body and hindquarters, so well put together. Lovely tail set carried correctly. Spannable with good pelt. Moved very straight and purposeful. Will watch his future with great interest.
RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW: - Grant’s Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Dannebriel Me and My Girl. Lovely outgoing 7-month-old bitch, full of confidence and quality. Good feminine head of correct proportions, developing nicely. Clear, bright dark hazel eyes, well set V shaped ears and good bite. Good neck, lovely long, well laid-back shoulders and straight forelegs. Compact body with strong and level back. Ribs nicely sprung and correct tail set. Muscular hindquarters with well bent stifles. Excelled in movement and commands the ring. Gracefully moving with long, low strides with reach in front and drive behind. Good quality coat and colour. Another to watch for future. Pushed the Border hard for his placing.
TERRIER PUPPY GROUP THREE: - Hands, Freeman & Badman’s Staffordshire Terrier, Skyestaff’s the Limit. Only just 6 months on the day, but what a star. Liked her a lot. So well balanced and confident. Well-proportioned head with broad skull and distinct stop. Dark, round eyes with correct ears. Good neck, forequarters and correct width of front. Muscular body coming, level topline with correct tuck-up. Good feet and tail set carried correctly. Moved straight and true.
TERRIER PUPPY GROUP FOUR: - Richardson’s Cesky Terrier, Talyot Octavius. 6-month-old dog puppy with lots of maturing to do and should turn out very nice as time goes on. Correct long head with slightly arched skull. Deep set eyes and high set pendulous ears. Good forequarters and length of body with slight rise to well-arched loin. Coat coming well.
BEST VETERAN IN SHOW: - Mignano-Fricker & Fricker’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Ch. Pantycelyn Just a Dream of Calavey ShCM. One of my favourites. Now 10 years old, although she does not look it. She has a lovely head shape with correct skull to muzzle ratio. Plenty of bone, correct width of chest and straight front. A good spring of rib, close-coupled, short in the back and a level topline, carried on the move. Good tail set and carriage. She moves free, straight and with purpose, as she is so well constructed. A real quality bitch and worthy champion, a credit to her owners and handler who keep her in such lovely condition.
RESERVE BEST VETERAN IN SHOW: - Atyeo’s Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Kanjuley Scarlet O’Hara. Another quality veteran. 9 years old and in lovely coat and condition. Good head, flat skull, nice eyes and well-set ears. Slightly arched neck. Good shoulders, very good ribs and body. Strong loin, level back and well bent stifles. Attractive, balanced head with square skull and well domed forehead. Good teeth, dark, round expressive eyes and correctly set ears. Well laid shoulders, into short strong front legs and good depth of chest. Correct topline and good hindquarters. Moved well, when encouraged, keeping her topline and good tail carriage. Well-presented and handled, in good coat.

1. Hoare’s Divadell Who’s Next at Glenaffric. A very nice 16-month-old bitch with a lovely outline. Long head with skull nearly flat and good ears. Well rounded ribs flattening to deep chest and short back. Deep thighs and well bent stifles. Moved very well, smoothly and freely with drive from behind. Good coat and skirt, having a harsh, dense and wiry topcoat. Should be nice when she fully matures.
2. Nixon’s Tout Nouveau Tout Beau Du Clan Des Petits Colonels Karmaristol (Imp Fra.). Brindle dog. Very much a puppy and appeared a little too long in the body for me. Masculine head with plenty of furnishings but would have liked smaller ears. He may grow to them. Coat correctly dense and wiry. Moved OK. BEST PUPPY.

1. Chugg’s Chatmoss Chaterbox at Tufterslodge. Not so much the old type of Jack Russell Terrier. Well-handled and moving well in profile, but I wish he had moved a little slower. The dog has short legs! A decent head, with flat skull and well-defined stop, although I would have preferred a shorter muzzle. Nice sized ears which I would have liked lying flatter to the side of the skull. Spannable. Firm topline with level back, but a bit long in body. Good tail set. In good coat. A real showman. BEST OF BREED.

Tail detracts. Super coat of nice colour – hard, wiry and straight. BEST OF BREED.
2. Mullan & McFadden’s Watercroft Pop Muzik at Tamodan. Quite a nice type with a reasonable head. Nice broad, flat skull, but would have preferred slightly smaller ears. Good body but tail detracts. Appeared to be a little wide in front, resulting in a bit loose in front movement.
