Critiques for Flatcoated Retrievers & Curly Coated Retrievers.

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at your show. I had a very enjoyable day and was very pleased with the quality of the exhibits!

Flatcoated Retrievers

Puppy (11, 1a)

Great to see such a big entry of puppies - thank you! All four placed were super puppies and I will watch them with interest going forward.

1. Prior’s Blacktoft Avelino. Lovely 7 month old black bitch who is moderate all through with substance. She has a feminine one-piece head with slight stop and dark eyes. Well-proportioned reach of neck with good forechest and legs well under her body. Level topline into strong hindquarters, standing straight on tight, round feet. Carried her tail level on the move. Moved accurately with reach and drive. BPIB

2. Wild’s Bitcon Alliance With Bluewaters (AI). 7 month old black dog who has it all there, just needs time to bring it all together as Flatcoat puppies do. He has a lovely one-piece head with dark eyes. Plenty of reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and good depth of chest. Strong level topline into a nicely sloped croup and well-carried tail. Nicely angulated hindquarters, standing straight. Moved accurately on strong feet, holding his outline.

Graduate (2, 1a)

1. Whitaker’s Jetstarski I’m On Fire. 18 month old liver bitch who stood alone but very much deserved her place. Feminine one-piece head with a clean reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and great forechest. She has a level topline into strong well-balanced hindquarters. Moved with good reach and drive. Standing on straight legs and strong feet.

Limit (4, 2a)

1. Whitaker’s Evening Mist Black Brianta (IMP CZE). A well-balanced 4 year old black bitch with good substance all through. Her head is feminine and well-filled with dark eyes. Strong neck with correct reach into well laid back shoulders with good forechest and legs well under her body. She has good depth of chest and is well-ribbed with a short loin and level topline. Strong hindquarters with moderately bent stifle. Stands true all round which helped her move accurately on the move with reach and drive. BOB

2. Gogarty’s Padend Just The Way You Are. 2 year old black bitch with a feminine one-piece head with dark eyes, correct reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and legs well under her body. She has a lovely deep chest and is well-ribbed with a level topline into her well set tail. Moderately angled hindquarters with well let down hocks. Standing true all round, she moved accurately. I preferred 1’s balance on the move.

Open (4, 2a)

1. Hewison’s Casblaidd Island In The Sky SGWC KCWGC. I loved this 5 year old black dog’s type. His head is masculine and well-balanced with a slight stop and is well-filled with dark eyes. Tidy ears with strong reach of neck into good shoulders and correct forechest. Deep through the chest and well-ribbed with short loin and strong topline. Well-muscled hindquarters which he used to advantage on the move - moving accurately with drive, holding his outline. Would have preferred more length to his upper arm. RBOB

2. Buckley’s Steelriver Hit The Beach With Buckleyhill. A 3 year old black dog with good substance all through, close decision with 1. Well-balanced head with dark eyes nicely set on a strong neck. Well-laid back shoulders with good forechest and legs well under his body. Deep chested and well-ribbed with a level topline. Correct slight slope to his croup into his tail set. Strong hindquarters balanced with his front. Moved accurately with good drive. 

Curly Coated Retrievers

Puppy (0, 0a)

Graduate (1, 0a)

1. Wynne-Jones’s Crimblescurl Wildotter. 4 year old liver bitch with a wedge shaped head and a good reach of neck. Balanced, moderately angled fore and hindquarters. Deep chest with well-sprung ribs and level topline. Standing on strong round feet, moved freely. Would’ve preferred tighter curls. RBOB

Limit (1, 0a)

1. Wynne-Jones’s Crimblescurl Cherry. 3 year old black bitch. Interesting to see she’s a repeat mating of 1st in Graduate as very similar comments apply. I preferred this bicth’s crisp curls and substance. She moved effortlessly with good reach and drive, holding her balanced outline. BOB
