Wirral Kennel Association

Wirral Kennel Association

28th December 2022 Judge – Robert Geary

I would like to thank Wirral Kennel Association for the opportunity to judge the Gundog Group at there well run show. It was very difficult to assess movement today as I would have preferred a bigger ring for the dogs to move. My assessment of movement was on what I could see on the day and in a bigger ring I am sure some dogs would move better.

Gundog Group

 Group 1 - Field Spaniel.

Group 2 - GSP, Quintana Lunar Eclipse, at 18 months I am sure she has a bright future. Presents a noble appearance of power and endurance, Stands covering plenty of ground. Clean head, medium eye, broad ears set high, good length of neck onto good shoulders. Straight front with correct bone, well bent stifles with muscular thighs. Good stride and driving action.

Group 3 - American Cocker Spaniel

Group 4 - Labrador Retriever

Puppy Group

Group 1 - English Pointer; Group 2 - Labrador Retriever; Group 3 – Golden Retriever; Group 4 – Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Pointer

Junior (3,0)

1 - Bond’s Joneva Azelia Banks, 11 month old bitch, orange/white, well made with appearance of good strength all through. Well proportioned head, eye giving a kind expression, strong jaw with correct scissor bite. Long sloping shoulders with enough width of chest, well sprung ribs, correct turn of stifle and width of thigh. Wouldn’t want any heavier. Moved well. Bp, BOB and PG1

2 – Blake’s Vadkartya’s Snipe, 6 month old orange/white male. Correct head, good length of neck onto well laid shoulders, good spring of rib, enough turn of stifle, nice feet. Wasn’t enjoying the whole experience today as was his litter sister in 3rd. Both will come on with practise and more experience.

3 – Blake’s Vadkartya’s Pipit

Post Graduate (2,1)

1 – Astbury’s Jilony Bobby Ball at Dorbury, 2 year old b/w male, nice head with enough length of neck onto well laid shoulders, well sprung ribs, good width of thigh. Not happy standing but became a different dog on the move, with a good driving movement.

Open (2,1)

1 – Astbury’s Penwest Photo Finish for Dorbury, 4 year old o/w male, nice head, good length of neck, straight in front, good spring of rib, good turn of stifle, moved ok

Labrador Retriever

Puppy (3,0)

1 – Williamson’s Sharouns Inspector Gadget, 6 month old yellow male. First impression was strongly built, short coupled and active. However, the active was in his naughtiness in the beginning. Lovely prospect with excellent bone, good head, front and rear, moved erratically but showed enough especially in the puppy group. BP and PG2

2 – Smith’s Hurstmeon Hey Look its me at Flyenpig, 9 month Black bitch, another great prospect and close up to 1. Good head, front and rear with good bone and good movement. Preferred the standing topline of 1.

3 – Bailey’s Harrop Ravenheart

Junior (2,1)

1 – Bailey’s Harrop Ravenheart, 11 month black bitch, nice head onto powerful neck, straight front good body and strong thighs, movement overall not as strong as the 1st and 2nd in puppy

Post Graduate (5,4)

1 – Gower’s Aughtonchase Honey Pie, 3 year old yellow bitch. Nice feminine head, strong neck on to good shoulders, straight front, and good rear. For me carrying too much weight and lacked positive movement.

Open (3,1)

Golden Retriever

Puppy (6,1)

1 – Murray’s Shebelta Sweet Talkin’ Guy, BP and PG 2

2 – Harveys’ Shebelta Sweet Charlotte, 9 month old siblings taking 1 & 2. In first, the male, had a lovely chiselled, broad skull onto a good clean neck. Excellent bone on straight front legs, good front angulation as was the rear angulation. Short-coupled with deep chest, balanced picture and moved with reach and drive. The second, a bitch, was very close up and these two should have a bright future. Today I preferred the overall picture and movement of 1

Post Graduate (6,3)

1 – Broadhead’s Monchique Last Samurai JW, 2 year old male. Lovely prospect, liked his head which fitted the standard well, clean neck onto good shoulders. Straight front, short coupled with good front and rear angulation. Gave the impression of powerful true movement with a long free stride. BOB

3 - Copley’s Lalique Lord of the Rings at Hamcar

1 – Copley’s Monchique Imperial Beau at Emmabe Ir J Ch JW, lovely 4 year old male who has all the quality to do well at a higher level. Broad balanced skull, well chiselled showing no coarseness. Clean neck onto excellent shoulders, straight front, excellent front and rear angulation, short coupled, presenting a symmetrical outline. Lost out in movement today and in a bigger ring might be easier to assess.

2 – Graves’ Bowbarl Twistnturn, 4 year old male, overall not the same quality as 1. Good skull with good front and rear assemblies. Lacked the reach and drive of 1.

Cocker Spaniel

Junior (4,2)

1 – Thomas’s Manlinson Happy Together, 9 month old bitch, in excellent condition whose tail never stopped. Feminine head with square muzzle and clean skull. Low set ears with good covering, moderate neck, clean throat, long sloping shoulders. Compact body, good bend of stifle which gave good drive.BP

Strong muscular neck, well laid back shoulders, chest deep and well developed. Moderately bent stifles with well let down hocks. Good length of stride, driving from the rear. 1 – Langley’s Amarante Philisha (PP)

All three of these dogs weren’t happy in the ring today and were difficult to go over. My placings were on movement. However, with time, training and more experience I think the Slovakian is a good prospect for the future.
