Hound Association

Breed: Irish Wolfhound

Sent from my iPad The Hound Show

Thank you to the committee of The Hound Show for the invitation to judge at this well run and hospitable show.

I was struck by the variation of looks in the entry. There has always been a variation in the breed, as with any breed, different breeders have their own interpretation of the breed standard and different lines have their own strengths and weaknesses.

What I noticed in this entry were variations so marked that in some cases they could have been different breeds. From small and lacking bone, to bulky, with round bone and a complete lack of hound features.

The most striking confirmation problem were fronts. such a difficult structural problem to get right and then to keep. There was an array of top lines but in general there more with an arch over the loin then I expected.

Coats, in general, were harsh with undercoat. Which was very good to see.

Another point of concern, and something I’ve not seen before, on at least two of the young males the testicles were abnormally small. I’ve been told this is possibly because of hormonal injections.

On a positive note, only one young hound had a dentition problem, which hopefully will correct itself.

In a breed, which at the moment is going through a low patch, I very much enjoyed watching my BOB and BOS go around the ring. Two lovely, typical IW hounds.

We are very lucky to have such a sound, well constructed hound in our BOB, representing the breed and doing so well in the big ring.

Balanced conformation front and rear, and won this class on his better forehand and very sound movement.

A shapely houndy youngster with the makings of a beautiful brindle coat. A long head with the most beautiful dark eyes, good pigmentation and well carried ears. Long ribcage into strong loin, giving him a correct top line. POST GRADUATE DOG 1

Brachan Giorno Di Natale ( Mr. P. Guntrip)

I’ve seen this dog goes through many stages in his growth and I thought today he looked the best I’ve ever seen him. A red brindle with an excellent coat he was in very good muscular condition. A strong, long masculine head, with excellent pigmentation and well carried ears, arched neck into an excellent forehand construction. Deep strong body Strong wide loin. He fails in his hindquarters where he needs more angulation to compliment his front and give him balance.Today he moved very well.

LIMIT DOG 3(2)

1st. Jaguar Shark at Sullyenda ( Mr. J.Harris)

OPEN DOG 3(1)

1st. Ch. Caredig Mafioso ( Mrs. D. E. Tebbutt)

A very well constructed balanced workmanlike hound. In excellent hard condition and beautifully presented. Typical masculine head, with correct planes, a strong arched neck into an excellent lay back of shoulder and upper arm, generous forechest. Deep chest, ribbed back into strong wide loin. Broad across the pelvis, Balanced angles and strong muscles to his hindquarters. A very sound, correct mover, holds his shape on the move.

It was a pleasure to watch him represent the breed and to be awarded Best in Show.

2nd.Whitglen The Real Thing ((Mrs.A.White)

This well presented, well-made male, in an excellent crisp jacket, took my eye when he came in to his class and then decided that he couldn’t be bothered to show, fortunately when he came in for the challenge, he pulled out all the stops.

Typical Head with kind expression, strong neck into a very well-made forehand. he is well ripped back, I would preferred more arch over his top line but his well-balanced, well muscled hindquarters served him well on the move. He is a correct and very sound mover.

PUPPY BITCH 4(2)

1st. Cairnstorm Legacy (N and K Warwick)

A lovely headed, eight month old cream brindle, a very well grown puppy with good bone legs and feet. She is in a rather difficult growth stage at the moment, being rather bum high. Even so she’s dealing with it well and moved very soundly.

JUNIOR BITCH 2(1)

1st. Florence Della Bassa Pavese to Baronglen ( Mr. and Mrs.Pask )

Quality long legged houndy bitch, with an excellent red brindle coat. Shown in superb condition. Has certainly come on since I last saw her.

A beautiful strong but feminine head with well held ears. Arched neck into fair shoulder. A strong long body, with correct top and underline, with well shaped hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet.

She comes into her own on the move, long striding and true. Would like to see more prosternum.

YEARLING BITCH 3

1st. Florence Della Bassa Pavese to Baronglen (Mr. and Mrs Pask)

2nd. Leon Do Chroi Elizagh Bertha Cornovi ( Miss J Timmins)

A two-year-old that looks very immature.Typical Head a little flat in the ear, beautiful expression and pigmentation. Excellent coat texture, and shown in very nice condition.

I find her little lacking in bone throughout. Moderate but balanced angulation. I would’ve expected her to be a more true mover than she is.

3rd. Bonaforte’s Beautiful Dawn with Clanwolf ( Miss L. Lees)

SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH 2

1st. Glengail Ccaoimhe with Aelfsige (Mrs. L. Waslin.)

The big ring suited her and she put on a great show, being award Reserve Best Special Beginners in Show by judge Maggie Holder

2nd.Bonaforte’s Beautiful Dawn with Clanwolf (Miss L. Lees)

A red bitch in excellent coat. Long well proportioned Head with beautiful pigmentation and well held ears. Strong well shaped, strong body, well muscled hindquarters.Let down by her front construction, which showed in her movement.

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH 3(1)

2nd. Glengail Ccaoimhe with Aelsige (Mrs. L. Waslin)

POST GRADUATE BITCH 3(1)

1st. Ashgrove Betty Mae ( Mrs. P. Ashby)

This is a very well made, strong workmanlike bitch. A typical head, although a little round in the eye. She has a very strong neck into an excellent forehand. Strong, well ribbed body into powerful, well angulated hindquarters. Truly powers around the ring.

Unfortunately, today she was overweight and soft in condition. Her coat was also blown.

With a little work, she has all the makings of an excellent bitch.

2nd. Glengail Ccaoimhe withAelfsige ( Mrs.L. Waslin)

LIMIT BITCH 4(1)

1st. Glengail Aarcus (Mr. Steve Bradleey)

This is an absolutely glorious bitch. I hate the expression ‘old-fashioned’, but she does remind me of some of the lovely bitches of the past. Breed type through and through, together with excellent balanced confirmation. she really is a joy to handle with a classic head into a strong neck. The sort of lay back of shoulder, forechest and return of upper arm that you rarely find these days. Well boned legs and good feet. Strong loins and powerful, well shaped, hind quarters, she was in superb muscular condition. She is not at her happiest in the ring, but is very sound and correct in her movement, powerful with no wasted exaggeration.

CC and BOS

2nd. Hydebeck Ring of Roses (Mrs.S.E. & Mr.P.D. Carlow)

An upstanding red in excellent coat. Strong, powerful bitch with a beautiful head, expression and pigmentation. Deep, long, ribbing into wide strong loin. Wide pelvis, well muscled thighs and second thighs. Moved around the ring with power.

Unfortunately, her front construction let her down in an otherwise nice bitch.

3rd.Rysheron’s American Hope for Clanliy (Mrs. C. Sterling)

A sound brindle bitch, she is balanced, but need more angulation both front and rear to be correct for the breed.

OPEN BITCH. 3(2)

Houndy , brindle 7 year old in excellent coat. Lovely head and expression. Balanced angulation in very good condition for her age. Altogether, a very typical and correct wolfhound Very sound 6 on the move.

2nd. Hydebeck Dream of Lorelei at Laoiseach (Mrs.S.E.& Mr.P.D.Catlow)

Red in supper coat and shown in excellent condition. She is a wonderful strong bitch starting on good legs and feet, a deep capacious body and well-made headquarters.

Once again, her front construction failed her otherwise excellent make.
