Can I thank the Secretary, Matthew Allen-Jenkins and the Officers and Committee of the PC of South Wales for inviting me to judge for them and for working so hard to ensure that the show ran both smoothly and with their usual friendly atmosphere. My thanks go to the President, Robert Niven-Lewis for his most kind words of introduction. My thanks also to my two most capable stewards, Claire and Lottie Wright, who looked after both me and the exhibitors so well, keeping the ring running smoothly throughout the day. As a founder and life member of the Club it was a great privilege to judge this Ch Show.
I was both honoured and humbled by the amazing entry exhibitors gave me, one of the highest numerically this year, making this day an even more special for me. I thoroughly enjoyed going over all your dogs, my love of Poms has never faltered over the decades and assessing this entry was a joy for me. Thank you for bringing them all for me to see. Temperament was superb, type was in the majority of cases good. Conformation and movement was good in my winners and down the line in strong classes but here, I feel, there is opportunity to improve in future breeding, particularly in fronts. Poms are on Breed Watch for open fontanelle and breeders need to be aware of this in their future plans, however, it is pleasing to report that though there were some small open fonts in the adult classes there were not many.
Class 1 Baby Puppy Dog (1 entry) Abs 0
1st: Johnson’s Elegant Atistocrat Tai Lauras (Imp UKR) NAF TAF
Orange in full baby coat. He has a pleasing head and expression. Good tail set but carriage could be straighter. Moved well once settled. Thoroughly enjoying himself and he certainly has both buoyancy and vivacity. Teething currently and mouth rather muddled, hopefully this will improve with age.
Class 2 Baby Puppy Bitch (5 entries) Abs 0
All these baby girls had promise, ring confidence had to play a part in my placings today.
1st: Boyes’ PoshdonPoms Empire Dreams. Best Baby Puppy
Orange who scored in her square outline, short coupling and good length of leg. Pleasing head with good eye, stop and foreface, would have liked ears a tad higher set. Excellent tail set and carriage. Nice little mover.
2nd: Johnson’s Poshdonpoms Dreamkeeper of Amardica
Catalogue tells me litter sister to above. I loved her head and expression. High set ears, and a twinkling dark eye gives her the classic Pom head I adore. A little longer cast than winner but still giving a good outline. Not quite as confident which wasn’t helping her tail carriage today.
3rd: Phillips’ Klassna Gotta Have A Star.
Class 3 Veteran D (1 entry) Abs 1
Class 4 MPD (5 Entries) Abs 0:
1st: Niven-Lewis’ Rostellars Ostentatious
Promising pup in full glamorous coat with such a sweet head & expression. Ear & eye placement correct with good head coat. Good pigmentation and good mouth. Construction was good providing sound movement, if a little close behind at times today. Many positives and much to like if he matures to potential.
2nd: Holman’s Divinity A Touch of Brooklyn at Altina
Red Orange coming into a nice quality jacket. A little upstanding for his age, so hope he doesn’t grow on too much. Well constructed with pleasing rear movement, front needs to settle. Good head with correct ear, eye placement although eye is a tad bold for sweetness. Good tail set and carriage.
3rd: Hill’s Sharhazlah’s Devil on Fire
Class 5 PD (5 Entries) Abs 2
1st: Ellen’s Klassna That’s My Dream
A top quality 11mth old who has changed his baby fluff and is carrying an excellent correct red/orange coat, beautifully presented. Good for size with a pleasing head and expression with correct foreface and good dark eye. Good dentition and pigment. Ear high set, yes, it could be a tad smaller, although his profuse head coat compensates for this well. Excellent short, high set neck, short coupled and well ribbed. Tail set high and carriage good. Soundly constructed, producing good rear movement. Front was a tad wide at times today but generally good. Pushed hard all the way. Nothing in this entry could touch him for RCC & BPIS
2nd: Allen’s Divinity Phantoms Illusion
Small, pretty and compact. Sweetest of heads with the dark twinkling eye I love and small high set ear. High set tail and carriage. Good coat quality. Moved well in rear, front a little less positive.
3rd: Kacarevic’s Royalkapoms Dushan Silni (ATC)
Class 6 JD (5 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: Smith’s Sueacres Catch A Dream
Small, compact O/S. Pleasing head and expression with good pigmentation, dark eye, correct stop. Good dentition. Small high set ear. Excellent short neck set well up on his shoulders, correct in rib with well sprung deep tapering chest. Short coupled. High set, straight, well carried tail. Good neat feet. Well constructed and moving to prove it in all directions at all times. Not in his full coat, which at his age is usual, but his coat is correctly textured with plenty of strong straight guard hair. His correct chest, shoulder and elbow stood away in this entry. An excellent example of the breed and very pleased to award him DCC & RBIS
2nd: Lovell’s Pawsamy’s Hank Summer Dream
Very pretty head and expression with a lovely eye. In good coat of the correct texture. High set tail carried well with a full plume. A little longer cast than I prefer but a quality exhibit with all the essentials.
3rd: Allen’s Divinity Rising from Ashes
Class 7 Yearling D (3 entries) 2 Abs
1st: Niven-Lewis’ Rostellar Super Sonic
Stood alone but there is plenty of quality in this young lad. Scored highly for his excellent, crisply harsh coat, with plenty of undercoat and guard hair, so well presented. I liked his head, with small high set ears and a good expression, eye pigmentation could be a tad deeper. He is put together correctly, well balanced with a good length of leg, nicely ribbed and short coupled. Moved well in all directions. Good plume carried on high tail set.
Class 8 PGD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
I found much to commend all three of these boys. All three are compact and nicely constructed and all moved well.
1st: Boyes Poshdonpoms Touch of Class
This lad is beautifully balanced and well put together. Correctly textured and well presented coat. Good outline, short coupled and correct angulation giving good movement. High set straight tail with well carried plume. Correct head with good ear and eye shape and size, giving a most attractive headpiece.
2nd: Brown Y’s Altina’s Albany at Yanimas
Another quality exhibit. Loved this lad’s open expression and lovely dark eye. Ears could be made more of. Enough coat to asses but not in full coat today. Soundly constructed and a good mover.
3rd: Neve & Ridgett’s Styalways Here I Am
Class 9 LD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Neve & Ridgett’s Styalways I’m Still Standing
Impressive lad. I like his make and shape. Pleasing head and expression, although I felt more could be made of his ears. Nicely ribbed and short coupled. Correct angulation and reasonably balanced, with just enough leg. Excellent coat with good strong guard hair. High set tail well carried. Moving very well behind, on occasion a tad wide in front.
2nd: Brown L’s Altina’s Mississippi Blue
Good shape when standing. Head pleasing in most respects with good expression. Short coupled but not quite the tail set of one but it is straight and well carried.
3rd: Lovell’s Pawsamy’s Sweet William JW
Class 10 OD (8 Entries) Abs: 3
Quality exhibits right down the line although some well up to size for the UK
1st: Holman’s Ch Altina’s Henry Higgins
Short coupled quality Orange. Pleasing head and expression with a good, well shaped dark eye. Short neck carried high on his shoulders with a good rib cage, tapering nicely to elbow, giving a well knit frame. Moved out to win here
2nd: Mogro Machuca’s Ch Trenarwyn Walkin’On Fire JCH
Quality Black in excellent coat of correct texture with good plume. In outline on the ground he can appear rangier and slightly longer cast but on the table I found his body is correctly proportioned and well in balance, thanks to his length of leg. His head is correct giving a good expression with small well furred ears.
3rd: Smith’s Ch Sueacre Centre Stage
Class 11 Sp Beg Dog (4 entries) Abs 1
1st: Brown Y’s Altina’s Albany at Yanimas
See 2nd PGD
2nd: Phillip’s Norvanik Gold Charm
Up to size but has plenty in his favour, with a pleasing head, somewhat longer cast than winner but with a high set tail with a good plume carried well. Nice on the move.
3rd: Hamzaoui’s Burralands Touch of Magic
Class 12 Stud Dog (2 entries) Abs 0
1st: Holman’s Altina Alabama True Romance
Quality exhibit. Good for size and shape with good dentition. Good tail set carriage and plume. Moved well.
2nd: Dixonhardwick’s Altina’s Denis The Menace at Aacharmoe
Black with pleasing head and expression. In good coat and moving well.
Class 13 Veteran Bitch (Entry 10 Abs 0
1st: Allen’s Pomstyle Promise for You from Divinity (Imp Russ)
7 yr old O. Good for size and well put together. Pleasing head and expression, ear could be a tad smaller. Short coupled. High set tail with well carried plume. Moving well in all directions. Front particularly good.
Class 14 MPB (2 Entries) Abs 1:
1st: Campbell’s Oraysha New Romance at Diemzs
Promising O/S baby with much to like. Good head and expression, although ear could be smaller. Liked her head carriage. Good dentition. Nicely ribbed, short coupled compact body. Movement rather unsettled today and she had a tendency to crab, time is on her side and this can be improved.
Class 15 PB (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Holman’s Aaliyah The Small Steps at Altina
O/S young lady with an attractive head and expression, correctly placed ears and good well shaped dark eyes. Correct foreface and good dentition. Soundly constructed, with a nice body. High set tail with well carried plume. Moving out to win. RBPIS
2nd: Hamzaoui’s Burraland’s Time To Dream
Light O pup in good coat. Pleasing in head and expression. Would have liked a slightly smaller ear and she is a little longer cast than 1. Nicely bodied for age with high set tail. A nice pup.
Class 16 JB (5 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Johnson’s Super Glamur Gabriella (Imp UKR) NAF TAF
2nd: Phillips’ Divinity’s Azurite
Two promising young ladies, as you would expect at their age, neither in their full coats but with enough to feel and assess quality. Both have pleasing heads and expressions and are well put together. Today, 1st was the more positive in front action both moved well behind.
Class 17 YB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Johnson’s Amardica Dragonfly Dreams
Heavily sabled O/S with a good head and expression, although her eye is a tad bolder than my preference, excellent pigmentation. Slightly longer cast but well constructed. High set tail and well carried plume. Moved soundly.
2nd: Boyes Poshdonpoms Don’t Give A Fluff
Standing she was my winner, as although she has not the prettiest of heads it is correct and her outline is excellent, short coupled and well ribbed with a good overall balance. Out moved today by 1.
3rd: Lovell’s Reubicia Topaz at Pwasamy
Class 18 PGB (5 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Chinn’s Altina’s Scarlet Ribbons to Midawn
Lovely light Orange coming into full coat and on her toes as I like. Pleasing open head with sweet expression and good ear and an eye which is particularly attractive. Tail placement high with well carried plume. Well put together and beautifully balanced in terms of leg length and short coupling. Made a very good outline. Out moved the competition in her class and her balanced outline, in probably the closest decision of the day, took her to the RCC.
2nd: Johnson’s Amardica Firefly of Dreams
Loved this O/S girl for her type, sweet head and melting expression, yes her ear could be a tad smaller but I like the high set. Longer cast and couldn’t match the excellent outline of 1, but nevertheless a quality exhibit with much to her credit.
3rd: Brown Y’s Alina’s After Midnight at Yanimas
Class 19 LB (8 Entries) Abs 2:
1st: Lovell’s Pawsamy Rose JW
Plenty to like in this exhibit. Pleased in head and expression. Short coupled and well ribbed giving a good outline. Well balanced throughout. Well carried tail with good plume. Moved soundly.
2nd: Hills’ Trenarwyn Catherine wheel at Sharhazlah
Black who was totally out of coat today but her construction and movement gave her this place.
3rd Ngai’s Yoshipom Born Ready Int. JCh
Class 20 OB (5 Entries) Abs 1
1st: Campbell’s Ch In Time Poms New Beginnings at Diemzs (Imp BGR) JW
Top quality clear Orange who in the old days would have been referred to enviously as a good dual purpose, ideal in size would cover it today. Pleasing in head and expression with good pigmentation and dentition. Extremely well put together and balanced with good length of leg to body ratio. Correct rib cage which was both well rounded and deep with enough taper to give good elbow placement and a correct front. High set, well carried tail with correct plume. Moving both correctly and with style and in good coat of the correct texture. She could not be denied, BCC and in the final analysis carrying coat and maturity, which gave her the edge over the dog today for BIS.
2nd: Trenarwyn Legend On Fire JW
The best head in this entry in my opinion, so sweet and so correct. Loved her small high set ear, with such a beautiful dark, twinkling eye and the most pleasing of eye shapes. Correct foreface, fine and balancing her correct skull well. Classic! Good body with nice rib and soundly constructed. High set tail with good plume carried well. Yes, she likes to keep her handler on her toes, but this naughty girl is also very nice and pushed hard all the way.
3rd: Ngai’s DJW-23 Yoshipom Destiny Calls
Class 21 SBB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st Johnson’s Super Glamur Gabriella (Imp UKR) NAF TAF
2nd Brown Y’s Altina’s After Midnight at Yanimas
Black, who has a good head and expression. Longer cast than is my preference. Nicely constructed and moving well behind but rather untidy in front today.
Class 22 Brood Bitch (3 Entries) Abs: 3
Class 23 Jean Stone Memorial Stakes (2 entries) Abs 1
