Basenji

It’s always more challenging judging a breed you show as you know most, if not all the dogs shown under you. I very much had to judge ‘on the day’ and some dogs I like very much were disappointing, whereas others surprised me. Thank you all for your entries.

1st: PALUBICKI, Miss Janette Jessella Milo Sunfyre. 7-month-old male red and white, who gives a good square outline being high on leg, gazelle like and aristocratic. Overall good head proportions with nice eyes and good wrinkle. Ears a touch bigger but head still needs to develop and grow into them. Good front with sufficient lay back of shoulders and lovely length of neck. OK feet, could be smaller. Nice short loin and good set of tail with sufficient shelf behind. Lovely coat texture. Still very raw and getting to terms with this showing malarkey, however a young male with plenty to like about him. Best Puppy Dog.

1st: CARRINGTON, Mrs Ashley & CARRINGTON, Mr Nicholas Amber tail’s Heels on New Shores At Senjiba (Can Imp). 2-year-old male red and white who has a masculine head with a good flat skull, although eye could be darker. Ears a bit bigger than I like but not unbalanced. Good neck going into a very good front with nice small feet and sufficient depth of chest. Excellent topline with well set tail and good shelf behind going into a balanced moderate rear. Really lovely mover when he got going with a free-swinging stride. Just needs to build in confidence on the table.

Three quality males.

1st: CARRINGTON, Mrs Ashley & CARRINGTON, Mr Nicholas Ch Int Ch Multi Bushwacker Oceans Eleven. Quality male of excellent breed type who I judged as a youngster. Lovely to see how he has matured. Super square outline with balance throughout. He has a lovely head with excellent flat, well chiselled skull of correct proportions, super almond dark eye and nice small ears. When stood correctly he has a lovely, crested neck going into a good front. He has an excellent topline, which he holds on the move and gives a lovely picture in profile, with a well-set tail, good shelf behind and balanced moderate hindquarters. A lovely swinging side gait with no exaggeration if felt this male exuded quality, breed type and soundness and is an excellent example of our lovely breed. I was delighted to award him his 13th Challenge Certificate I was told, not unlucky for him today, and a very worthy best of breed.

2nd: LEGGET, Mrs Isobel Ch Ir Ch Swanwite Take a Chance on Me ShCEx. Another excellent dog who I have judged before, Super masculine head of good proportions, although would like perhaps slightly smaller ears and more wrinkle. Super crested neck going into another very good front. A touch longer in body than the winner but another excellent tail set and shelf and a super mover, especially in profile. He’s a dog who gives a real air of aristocrat about him with super head carriage and style. A different type to the winner who I just preferred for proportions, however no doubting this dog’s qualities and very happy to award him the Reserve Challenge Certificate today.

3rd: GRAYSON, Mrs E & CULLEN, Mr D Ch Bushwacker American Hustle at Embeau. On first glance, I thought this dog was going to be my winner as he’s definitely my cup of tea for type. I loved his head and expression with super small ears, well-padded muzzle and nice flat skull of excellent proportions. Lovely, crested neck going into a good front and overall, super square outline. Well set tail with good curl and shelf behind and moderate balanced hindquarters. He decided on the move however today was not his day, with his head down and throwing his front, sadly in comparison to his classmates who put on near perfect performances he had to settle for third place today. Basenji males can be challenging at times, and I am learning myself that they will do as they please. I look forward to seeing him again when he is back on form.

1st: PALUBICKI, Miss Janette Ch Woodella True Song. 11-year-old tri colour who defies his years, super head and eye shape with lovely flat skull, well cushioned muzzle and nice small ears. A good front with well laid shoulders and good length of neck. Overall gives an excellent square outline being high on leg and gazelle like with balanced moderate hindquarters and good depth of brisket. Tail set could be a touch higher to be critical but moved well for his age, just not quite the freedom of his younger compatriots in the open class. A quality dog and worthy champion, happy to award him Best Veteran in Breed.

Class SBD/B (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: CAMMEGH, Miss Emerald Jasmine Aksaifleet Doli Doria. 18-month-old red and white bitch who was super feminine with a lovely head with good wrinkle, nice eye shape with good small ears. Overall, a good square outline with good coat texture. OK front and rear, shoulder lay could be slightly better and tail set very slightly lower than I’d prefer. Once she settled, she moved well and with time and practice I’m sure her handler will get the best of out her. An honest typey bitch with plenty to like. Best Special Beginner.

VB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: HOLLOWAY, Mrs Tatyana Aksaifleet Russki Rose. Feminine red and white with lovely head proportions and nice small ears. Eye is a touch rounder than I’d prefer, however. Good length of crested neck going into a good front with nice feet. Overall, a very good outline with the better topline of the two present, good tail set and shelf and nice coat texture. Moved well, especially in profile. Best Veteran Bitch.

2nd: PALUBICKI, Miss Janette Nganga's Princess Snow White (imp Swe). Red and white with good enough head with a better eye and expression than the winner although her ears could be smaller and higher set. Good, crested neck and good front although pasterns could be stronger. Another who moved well however was a touch ‘bum high’ in profile which spoiled her overall outline.

1st: LEGGET, Mrs Isobel Here We Go Again at Swanwite. Tri colour who is a bit bigger than I’d like a bitch to be, however I felt the most together in this class today. She has a balanced head with good skull proportions and a lovely eye shape and aristocratic expression. Super crested neck going into a very good front and feet with excellent depth of chest for her age, well set tail and lovely coat and colour. Carrying a bit of puppy fat, which I’ll forgive as a super mover. There was a lot I really liked about this quality bitch, I’d just like less of her.

2nd: CASENTIERI, Ms Cj & Mr Tf Alchez Sky Ain't the Limit. Red and White bitch who was lovely for type with super feminine head and good eye shape. Ears still a touch big but needs to grow into them. Excellent neck and front and super small feet. Lovely square outline when she stood still and super tail set. On the move she was being very naughty for her handler and despite giving her another chance, she was out moved by the winner today.

3rd: PALUBICKI, Miss Janette Jessella Matilda Meleys. Tri bitch who had many similar qualities to her litter mate in puppy dog. Just a bit overwhelmed today and not as settled on the move. Just needs time.

1st: CASENTIERI, Ms Cj & Mr Tf Alchez Live for the Night. Super feminine 7-month-old black and white bitch who I thought was excellent for type and quality. Lovely balanced flat skull with excellent dark almond eye, nice, hooded ears and super inscrutable expression. Super crested neck with probably the best front of the entry, correct lay of shoulder, correct bone and excellent small compact feet. Lovely square outline with super tail set and shelf. Very sound movement, lovely free-swinging gait and lovely coat colour and texture. I just loved everything about her today and couldn’t take my eyes off her in the challenge. I’m aware she has some maturing to do however everything is in the right place and I’m sure she has a bright future. I was delighted to award her the bitch challenge certificate and best Puppy in Breed. I will watch her future with interest.

Little between these two bitches

1st: PALUBICKI, Miss Janette Jessella Lady Margot. 4-year-old red and white with a good head and nice almond eye and OK ears. Good neck going into the better front of the two with a good topline and balanced moderate hindquarters. Pasterns could be stronger however overall, a good outline with well set tail and shelf. Moved well, especially in profile.

2nd: HOLLOWAY, Mrs Tatyana Aksaifleet Daydream Diana. Feminine head with nice expression and good small, hooded ears. Nice square outline overall being high on leg and good fine bone. Not as good in front as the winner however moved well with plenty to like.

1st: CASENTIERI, Ms Cj & Mr Tf Ch Lux Ch Zvezdny Alliance Genie in a Bottle (imp). Brindle bitch who I judged as a youngster and has been a delight to see mature into a successful champion. Very good head with lovely dark almond eye and expression, with lovely small ears. Super front with well laid shoulders and very good feet with excellent depth of chest. A touch longer in body than I’d prefer however excellent high set curled tail with strong hindquarters. Super mover in all directions, sound up and back and good swinging stride in profile. She’s not really my style of Basenji however I can appreciate her qualities, and she won this class on her positive breed points and superb movement. I preferred her black and white kennel mate for overall type in the challenge, however happy to award her the reserve challenge certificate today.

2nd: CLINTON, Miss A Ch Akmar Napatan Gold for Westlawn JW. Another quality bitch who is probably more my type. Although she is a touch bigger than I’d prefer, she has a super head with excellent almond eyes, lovely balanced muzzle to skull with good cushioning and well-set ears. Beautiful aristocratic expression. Excellent crested neck going into a super front. Lovely coat texture and colour and overall, a good topline. She tends to drop away very slightly at the croup, although tail set and curl are excellent, with a well angulated rear. I initially thought this bitch would be my class winner, and possibly my CC winner, however she seemed to let herself down on the move today, looking a bit unbalanced. I can’t explain why as have seen her shown many times and move so much better, maybe she was unhappy with the showground or the weather or was just being a Basenji!! However, as I must judge on the day I could only award her 2nd after her brindle classmate out moved her. A quality bitch with so much to like, just not her day, today.
