Breed: Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit)

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

A real mixture of type, size and ages which took a bit of sorting out. Breeders, please keep a closer eye on bites as there were a couple of level and a couple verging on level bites present which wouldn’t be tolerated in their country of origin. Otherwise, a very pleasing entry and I was delighted with all my main winners. The BGV folk have always been kind to me as a non-specialist judge, and I thank them for their ongoing support.

1st: WATSON & KENNA, Mr & Mrs S D & A S Cynetkoy Charlie Brown. 11-month-old of super breed type with a lovely head and eye shape and good ears. Excellent length of neck going into well laid shoulders with good forechest and OK feet. Good length of rib with strong loin and balanced hindquarters. Super harsh jacket coming through and not too big. Moved well in profile, one who will be slow to mature, but lots to like. Best Puppy dog.

2nd: HOLT, Mrs Kim Cynetkoy River Pheonix. 11-month-old who was being a bit lazy today on the move. Lovely houndy head with good eye shape and nice square muzzle. Good length of neck going into well laid shoulders and good prominent sternum. Well-rounded ribs of a good length and strong hindquarters. Good coat texture. A sound mover but not the reach and drive of the winner.

3rd: WHEELER, Mrs Helen Teresa Probert Doc Martin

1st: SCOTT, Mrs Lynne & SCOTT, Mr Jacob & SCOTT, Mr Tob Overbecks Finn Shelby. Going through that teenager stage but with lots to like. Very good head and eye shape with excellent ears. Good length of neck going into a good front with nice tight elbows and good feet. Good forechest and excellent topline with a super coat. Could be stronger at the back end however held topline and tail well on the move.

1st: REID, Mr P & Mrs D Maudaxi Billy Bookcase. Quality male of excellent breed type with super head, nice square muzzle and good underjaw, lovely dark eyes and low set ears. Super length of neck going into a very good front with lovely tight elbows and very good feet. Moderately rounded ribs of good length with good prominent sternum and strong short loin. Strong well-muscled hindquarters with well set on tail which he held well on the move. Super coat texture and very sound on the move with super head carriage and reach and drive. An excellent example of the breed I was happy to award his first Challenge Certificate today. I noted I awarded his sire the CC last time I judged. He had the edge on the bitch in the challenge for freedom of movement which won him best of breed.

2nd: WATSON & KENNA, Mr & Mrs S D & A S Cynetkoy's Heihei. Mature male with good head and eye shape and well-set ears. Good enough front with good shoulders and prominent sternum. Slightly longer in body than I’d prefer however good coat texture. Moved OK

1st: DANE, Mr Paul Spencer & GUERNARI, Ms Lisa Cynetkoy's Tinker Tailor. Loved his head and expression with nice low set ears, excellent length of neck and very good feet. A touch short in upper arm but nicely rounded ribs with good length of loin and balanced hindquarters. Lovely sound mover and plenty to like. Considered for higher awards.

2nd: MCCARTNEY, Mrs G L Soletrader Ed Sheeran. A touch bigger than I prefer. Nice head with good expression and good ears. Good enough front but has a tendency to turn his feet out when stood. Excellent topline and good hindquarters. Moved OK.

1st: DALGARNO, Mrs & Miss C Vencharno Stuck On You. A dog I judged as a puppy and one I felt had a better front of the two today. Lovely typical head with super eye shape and good ears. Nice strong neck going into well laid shoulders, good prominent sternum and nice elbows. Well ribbed up with a good topline and nice compact loin. Balanced hindquarters and well-set tail. Coat could be slightly harsher but overall breed type is good. Moved well in his class however was struggling with the heat in the challenge which let him down. I understand he has recently been made up to Champion and well deserving of his title, just not his day, today.

2nd: MCCARTNEY, Mrs G L Ch Soletrader Freddie Mercury JW. Another quality dog with a very good head and expression, good prominent sternum and excellent topline and coat. Not quite the shoulders of the winner however generally moved well with plenty to like.

1st: SKERRITT, Mrs L & BETTS, Mrs J Beaujons Vagabond Of Monkhams VW. An old favourite of mine who was my RCC winner last time I judged. I’m always surprised he hasn’t got his title. Super breed type with lovely head and expression and an excellent front with nice tight elbows and good prominent sternum. Well ribbed up with good depth of chest and strong short loin. Lovely coat texture and strong hindquarters. Super sound mover who was just starting to struggle slightly in the heat by the end of judging. If I had gone with my heart this dog would have been my CC winner as I really love his type and style, however in the challenge the post graduate winner had more freedom and drive. I was delighted to award the RCC again as has so many lovely qualities and Best Veteran.

2nd: MOORE, Mrs Emma Afterglow Dough Ble Impact. Another one I have judged before and one with plenty to like. Lovely head and very good front with excellent harsh jacket and a good mover. Slightly longer in body than I like and a tendency to go a bit bum high at times lost him the class however in great condition for his age.

1st: HUIKESHOVEN, Mrs Anouk & ALLENBY, Mrs Heidi Jour Après Jour Twice As Nice. I felt this bitch was the most together of the two puppies on the move with a lovely head and expression, going into a super neck and front and good forechest. Excellent topline and tail set and good strong rear. Coat still softer but only a baby and very raw to go over, however loads to like. Lovely free movement in all directions. A puppy with a promising future I’m sure and delighted to award her best puppy today, I just wouldn’t want her to grow any bigger.

2nd: REID, Mr P & Mrs D Maudaxi Rebel Diamonds. Raw puppy of lovely breed type who was being very naughty for her handler. Lovely head and eye shape with super front and forechest and nice tight elbows. A bit bum high on the move and still needs to balance out however lots to like and in super coat and condition. Her tail didn’t stop wagging and I’m sure once mature will have a promising future.

1st: SCOTT, Mrs Lynne & BRUNDLE, Mrs Susan Overbecks Ruby Shelby. Really lovely bitch with super head proportions, nice dark eye and well-set ears. Excellent lay of shoulder with very good feet and good prominent sternum. Good length of rib with lovely topline and excellent coat going into a short strong loin. Balanced strong hindquarters and well-set tail. When she got herself together a lovely mover with super head carriage and held her topline. This bitch has lots to like and still plenty to come. Happy to award the RCC in today’s entry.

1st: 2977 SKERRITT, Mrs L & BETTS, Mrs J Monkhams Nightingale JW. I loved this bitch for breed type; she has a super head and eye shape with lovely low set ears and good underjaw and square muzzle. Super length of neck going into well laid shoulders with good prominent sternum and excellent feet. Lovely moderately rounded ribs of good length and nice short strong loin. Well set tail carried proudly and constantly wagging. Nice strong well-muscled hindquarters and super harsh coat. Super sound mover up and back and free and easy in profile. I think this bitch can easily be ignored as she is at the lower end of the height allowance within the standard, however, was the standout for me today for type and movement. I was delighted to award her the Challenge certificate, her second I believe, and best opposite sex.

1st: REID, Mr P & Mrs D Fox's Nightmare Lara Fabian at Maudaxi (imp Rus). Another bitch of lovely breed type with excellent head and eye shape. Very good front with well laid shoulders and super tight elbows and very good feet. Excellent topline with good length of rib and strong compact loin. OK hindquarters, although could be stronger. Struggled on the move in the heat today. Quality bitch with loads to like, just not her day today.
