Basset Hound Club

Breed: Basset Hound

The Basset Hound Club – 20th July 2025

Judge Miss Emily Mitchell

Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge such a prestigious show, it was an honour and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to all the exhibitors who entered.

Its sad to see that they have moved back into a category 3 breed but I found that the vast majority to have good eyes, skin and bites. I really liked the final line up, the quality is there but a lot are too lean with not enough substance for me. Bassets do need muscle and to do a days work but they should also be well covered and, for me, a lot lacked that stallion hound masculinity. Overall throughout the classes movement was good.

Veteran Dog (2 entered, 0 absent)

1st Shadbolt’s Sedonia’s Ambassador Of Akura. Neat dog with good balance and angulation. Nice head with correct bite. Nice clean front action with good amount of width. Decent lay of shoulder with good length of upper arm and balanced with good turn of stifle. Kept a good outline at all times. Moved with reach and drive.

2nd Allchorne’s Ch Nelgus Thyme Bomb JW ShCEx. Loved his size and his outline. Good head and decent lay of shoulder. Good topline and length of ribbing. Well angulated rear quarters which he used well in side profile and true movement behind. Not the width of 1 on the move in front.

Minor Puppy Dog (1,0)

1st Lane’s Goldenessence Deep Impact Over Lanebern (Imp Prt). 8 months old. Nice head but a little round in the eye. Elegant length of neck. Decent lay of shoulder, could be a little further back but still has time on his side. Lovely length of upper arm. Good topline underline and ribbing for his age. Well angulated rear. Moved well in side profile. Hopefully in time his shoulders will move back and give that more width in front. Needs more body but has nice potential. BPD.

Puppy Dog (2,0)

1st Land’s Clanwillow The Jazz Singer. Nice head with elegant expression and length of neck. Lay of shoulder could be better. Decent length of upper arm. Decent topline and underline. Well angulated rear quarters. Could have better width in front movement but lovely clean rear movement. Moved with good reach and drive in side gait.

2nd McNamara’s Burnvale Echoes And Shadows. Would prefer more length in skull to balance his head out. Decent length of neck. Could have better lay of shoulder and length of upper arm. Good topline and decent length of ribbing. Well angulated and muscled hindquarters which he used well on the move.

Junior Dog (5,2)

1st Ellrich’s Malrich Shaken Not Stirred. Decent head shape and length. Could have better lay of shoulder but well angulated in fore and rear quarters. Good topline and length of ribbing. Moves with purpose around the ring with good reach and drive. Needs to settle down and lift his head to give a more finished look.

2nd Parkes’ Bessalin Mad Hatter. Nice size and shape overall. Good head and reach of neck with a good lay of shoulder. Could have a better length of upper arm. Good topline and ribbed well back. Well angulated rear quarters. Moved well with decent drive but didn’t get his tail up.

3rd King’s Zawadi Life Of Pi

Yearling Dog (2,0)

1st Sutton’s Reveros Power Of Love. Nice head and elegant reach of neck. Decent lay of shoulder but could have a better length of upper arm and angle to shoulder blade. Good topline and length of ribbing. Well angulated rear quarters. Moved with lovely reach and drive.

2nd Roden’s Harvidene Love Potion. Balanced dog of neat size. Would prefer more length to head. Could have better lay of shoulder and length of upper arm. Good topline and underline. Could have more length to first and second thigh to create more freedom of movement.

Graduate Dog (4,2)

1st Gambling’s Dizandra Carpe Noctem. Loved his overall shape and balance. Nice head and reach of neck. Could have a better lay of shoulder but well angulated fore and rear quarters with good length to upper arm and first and second thig. Good length of reach and drive on the move. Needs to settle more on the move to show himself off but overall well-made dog.

2nd Jones’ Clanwillow Fire And Ice. Would prefer more length in skull to balance the head proportions. Decent lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, angulation of fore balanced with rear quarters. A little too lean for me in body and substance. Moved with decent reach and drive.

Post Graduate (1,0)

1st Johnston’s Blevwil Ron Like The Wind. Lovely overall shape and size. Lovely head and reach of neck. Good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Good topline and ribbed well back. Rear angulation balanced with fore. When he settled down on the move, moved with reach and drive and clean both fore and aft. Needs a little more maturity and to fill out but lovely overall shape.

Limit Dog (3,0)

1st Pop’s Quantus-Napoca White Pepper. Lovely red and white male with good balance and proportions. Lovely head and reach of neck. Decent lay of shoulder and good return of upper arm. Good topline and length of ribbing. Well made rear quarters. Moved with excellent reach and drive and clean fore and rear action. RCC.

2nd Green & Smit’s Wildebeest Will V Grunsven (Imp NLD). Decent head and reach of neck, could have a better lay of shoulder, decent length of upper arm. Placement of shoulders and a deeper chest makes him look a little overdone in front for me. Well angulated and muscled in rear quarters. Moved with reach and drive.

3rd Allchorne’s Nelgus Golden Nugget. Loved the shape of this dog, unfortunately didn’t seem to like the hall. To go over he has lovely construction but didn’t want to show himself off on the move. Hopefully he will mature with confidence as he is a lovely dog.

Open Dog (9,1)

Quite a mix of a class but nice to see the breed with a strong open class, some very worthy winners.

1st Rodgers’ Ch Switherland Bazooka. Stood out in profile on the stack and move for me. Beautiful head and reach of neck with excellent lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. So clean in front and underline. Rear quarters balanced with fore quarters. Kept his beautiful outline at all times. The correct size, shape and substance I was looking for. Excelled in movement, excellent length of stride and so true fore and aft. CC and BOS.

2nd Jones’ Clanwillow The Emerald King JWW’22. Nice head and neck, good forechest. Decent lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Kept a good outline on the move and the stack with excellent reach and drive. Clean action in fore and rear movement. Good topline, ribbing and underline.
