United Kingdom Toydog Society

Breed: Japanese Chin

Terrier aficionados have Montgomery, and Toy dog connoisseur’s have UK Toy! My utmost thanks to Tom Mather & the United Kingdom Toy Dog Society for the invitation and honor of awarding Challenge Certificates in Japanese Chin, the breed that lives in my heart. To have received an entry of 80 individual Japanese Chin, was nothing short of astounding! To my fellow Japanese Chin breeders & owners, I thank you all most Chin-cerly for this entry. Long before owning and breeding Japanese Chin, I would study them like a hawk, since my first visit to Crufts in 2004. I have always associated the UK Japanese Chin with a classic type - by that I mean small, square and cobby, with large heads, beautiful coats and sound movement.

Today, those attributes still apply, but I feel type is more varied. I look at dog breeding, owning and judging like art; it’s all subjective. If you hand 10 artists a brush and asked them to paint an apple, you can guarantee you will end up with 10 different apples.

On the whole, I was happy with the overall quality, soundness and health on the day. Height was excellent but body length is to be monitored to achieve squareness. I feel in both Male and Female line ups, I ended up with small, square sized dogs of beautiful type. I make no apology for loving a type I like to coin as “living Doll”. Chin can be so pretty, small, square, sound and most importantly healthy. My eye is always trying to find a small, square, elegant well balanced dog that moves soundly. The icing on the cake will be long strands of hair, that is of silky texture and cool to the touch to allow air to pass through. When it comes to headpieces, I want beautiful roundness, with good width to the skull. The nose placement should be inside the skull, on a line with the eyes. I also want to see good width to the underjaw that is short and broad, with good up-sweep to achieve the reverse figure 3 profile. I found several dogs with noses sitting outside of the skull, with pointed, narrow underjaw which very much affected expression and profile. A nose wrinkle has always been a bug bearer with me. I can absolutely live with a small wrinkle, but when the nose wrinkle is large and ropy, I draw the line. A large wrinkle not only takes away from the openness of the faces and harshens their expression, under the wrinkle is a wonderful breeding ground for bacteria and effects the health of the dog if not monitored and kept very clean.

Overall

Movement on the whole was sound, but the beautiful stylish, straight elevation in the front legs was in short supply. Health, soundness and temperament was excellent. I am disappointed to say, some exhibits were showed quite stained. One of the many cat like characteristic of Chin is that they are spotlessly clean. In such a quality entry, some poorly groomed dogs had to pay the price when it came down to the wire.

Much more mature than 1st. Very well bodied, with great depth to the chest. Large skull with correctly set eyes that were large and round showing the desired look of astonishment. Well placed nose with nice open nostrils. Well coated with feathering in all of the right places. Moved ok, a little untidy in front. Nicely set and carried tail.

A dog I have long admired by the ring side, but had not judged before today. 11 years young and what an absolute super star! He is the most wonderful, correct size. His shape is exemplary! Handsome head piece that was large for overall size of dog and nicely rounded. Correctly set eyes that were large in size and dark. Beautiful amount of white showing in the inner corner to give that all important look of astonishment, while eyes still facing forward. I loved his reach of neck that was so nicely arched. Nice depth to chest with good shoulder lay back. Excellent front. Super hare shaped feet with feathering. Cobby body with nice bone. Super tailset. He moved proudly around the ring like a youngster. It was an absolute pleasure to judge this gentlemen. Best Veteran in Breed and I was so proud to watch him take Best Veteran In Show. He is a wonderful ambassador for the breed, one we should all be proud of.

Class 194 MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 1

Two very promising puppies, I am sure they will change places.

1st: 804 WESTWICK, Miss Sj - Kassui Meyhem

White & Red Sable. What a little firecracker he is, mister personality! The most handsome of heads. Excellent for size, I would prefer him slightly shorter in back, but he is still developing. Beautiful amount of bubblegum cushioning to muzzle. Well set nose with good open nostrils. Elegant reach of neck. For one so young, he has a nicely feathered with already good silky coat texture. Very nice hare shaped feet. He moved happily and energetically around the ring. Excellent temperment.

2nd: 776 POTTS, Mr R & Mrs J - Somergemz Highland Laddie For Adreeam

Shorter in back than 1, which I appreciated. He is very nice for overall size and shape. Excellent reach of neck. Good shape to skull. He has gorgeous eyes, large, dark and round showing white in the inner corner. Very nice width to underjaw. Nice depth of chest, a little untidy in front at times, but again he is still maturing. Well feathered coat of nice silky texture.

This young dog truly is a star in the making! He captivated me with that absolutely gorgeous, plush head piece of his! Excellent round skull of large size. Gorgeous eyes, perfectly set in skull, so very round, dark in colour and showing that beautiful look of astonishment, while still being forward facing. Excellent nose placement in skull giving a beautiful reverse figure 3 profile from side view. Loved his amount of cushioning. Excellent width to underjaw. Elegant neck into good front. Very nice depth to chest. Level topline with correctly set and carried tail. Moved well. Is is of excellent size and shape. I considered him for the Reserve CC, with a touch more maturity I am confident there is a crown in his future.

2nd: 795 SWANSTON, Mrs G M - Capevidles I Am Maximus

Not the happiest on the day, he really did not want to be here. He is a very nice size. Coat of excellent silky texture that was nicely feathered throughout. Slender, elegant bone. I absolutely loved his soulful eyes. Very round of excellent size, dark with desired look of astonishment. Nice open nostrils. Good cushioning and very nice width to underjaw. Hopefully I see him again on a happier day.

1st: 803 VAN DE BURGT, Mr C & STRANGE, Mr D & HAMPTON, Mrs - Norvanik Kandi Crush

My notes say “heads, he wins”, but he has so much more than a glorious head piece. He is excellent for size, small and cobby with super bone. Large head for size and of beautiful round shape. Gorgeous, large, dark and round eyes giving a look of astonishment. Super nose placement on level line with his eyes. Nice cushioning with excellent underjaw, with all of these components he of course had the beautiful figure 3 head profile from the side. One of the most beautiful head pieces I have seen. Mature coat that was well feathered. Great depth to chest. Nicely set and carried tail that resembled a beautiful oriental chrysanthemum. He moved well and really pushed hard for the CC. He reminded me of the Homerbrent dogs I saw on my first visit to Crufts 20 years ago. Unlucky to meet today’s CC winner, but I am confident this dog will absolutely gain a crown. He has champion quality written all over him. Reserve Dog CC.

2nd: 739 CAYTON, Mr S - Aleemai Mr Brightside

I loved this dogs elegant shape. Very nice for size. His skull is nicely rounded. Beautiful large eyes. His nose wrinkle takes away some softness from his expression. Nice cushioning and good width to underjaw. Nice bone, would prefer a touch more body. Beautifully feathered hair, of excellent silky texture, so well presented. Correctly set and well feathered chrysanthemum tail. Moved well.

This was not an easy class to judge. There was a great difference in type and compromises had to be made.

1st: 806 YOUNG, Mr C F - Kirdanchi Moves Like Jagger Avec Craimose

Absolutely fantastic for size. Nice rounded skull with oriental expression. He has a super temperament and really catches your eye both standing and on the move. Well placed small ears that are nicely feathered. Excellent chest, compact cobby body. Nicely set tail. Good muscle tone, moved very confidently around the ring holding a nice shape. A tad more coat would complete the picture.

2nd: 749 FARMER, Mr George William - Salvador Dali By Sangria

Beautifully sized dog of very nice overall balance. Large, rounded head. Excellent large eyes, very dark with small amount of white giving a look of astonishment. Well feathered coat. Nicely shaped hare feet. Not the drive of 1 when moving, but otherwise moved well. Nice reach of neck and great substance to his cobby body.

White & Red Sable. I loved this young dog. For me his size, square shape and leg length is just ideal to create a balanced outline. Large head, round in shape. Magnificent eyes, large in size, round in shape, well set and giving a beautiful look of astonishment. Well placed nose. Nice amount of cushioning, excellent width to muzzle, with good underjaw. Well set and nicely feathered ears. Slender, strong, elegant bone. I would prefer a touch more body and coat to complete the picture. Beautiful hare shaped feet with nice feathering. He moved very well in all directions. I am sure he will have a bright future. Champion quality.

2nd: 764 MCFARLANE, Miss L & SMITH, Mrs J - Denise Avenue Of Roses ARAF (Imp Pol)

A very raw younger dog. He is very nice for overall size. He posses a lovely body shape. Large head. Darkest of eyes. I would like his nose to be positioned further back into his skull, right now he looks “nosey” and this spoils his head profile and expression. Great depth of chest for age. Very nicely boned with excellent front.

My star of the day! A dog that I have judged before and one who has done very well under me in his homeland, Sweden. He is a fantastic size and of an elegant shape that really commands your attention. His whole head was a series of circles and gentle curves. Beautifully rounded skull. Large eyes that are well placed, dark in colour and showing a small amount of white in the inner corner. Excellent nose placement on a straight line with his eyes. I loved his amount of cushioning to the muzzle, not over powering in any way, in perfect harmony with his face, real bubblegum cheeks! Not a hint of a nose wrinkle, keeping his face open and inviting. Very nice width to underjaw. Beautiful reverse figure 3 in head side profile. He looked very aristocratic. Elegant reach of neck with nice arch, leading into nice front assembly. Very nice depth of chest. Slender bone, elegant yet strong. Hare shaped feet that are nicely feathered. Level topline. There was great body under his beautiful coat, with excellent muscle tone. His hair is presented to absolute perfection, with feathering in all of the right places. Long silky, single strands and cool to the touch. Well set tail. In the class he moved ok. Thankfully in the challenge he moved better, and this took him to the Dog CC, with two younger dogs and the Veteran hot on his heels. In the challenge for BOB he took it up a notch and moved even better again, securing his BOB award. In the Best In Show ring, he took it up a whole gear and I felt he moved his best all day. I was very happy to see him awarded Reserve Best In Show. Overall classic typey dog of correct size with no exeragerations. Dog CC and Best of Breed.

2nd: 732 BURNS, Miss Tracy - Sleepyhollow Vincent

A dog I have judged before and have long adored, he is a big favorite of mine. Small and Square in abundance! The squarest and shortest backed dog of the day. He is the most beautiful doll type with the presence of a male. Excellent round shape to skull. Small, well set and carried ears that are nicely feathered. Beautiful large, dark and round eyes, giving a look of astonishment. Perfectly set and placed nose with nice open nostrils. Well cushioned muzzle, excellent underjaw. Another with the beautiful reverse 3 side profile. Moderate reach of neck into very nice front. He has excellent bone. Beautifully shaped hare feet with feathering. He has a great chest, I would like a touch more body. He is super square! Well set and carried tail that was beautifully feathered. A truly beautiful dog that richly deserves to wear a crown in the future.

Another old favorite of mine who I have always greatly admired from the ringside but have not judged, until today. She ticks all of the boxes for size, type, soundness and a double tick for attitude! Beautiful rounded skull with a very feminine face with very sweet “frosting” (the only way we know she is a veteran!). Nice reach of neck into great front assembly. Lovely shoulder layback. Excellent chest, square, cobby body. Super tailset. Nicely angulated rear that she used to full advantage to power around the ring. Another veteran the breed can be so proud of!

Class 202 MPB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

A really lovely class of puppies. I am sure 1 and 2 will change places.

1st: 805 WESTWICK, Miss Sj - Kassui Havoc

White & Red Sable. A lot of personality in a small, square package. Excellent for size and balance at this age. Beautiful feminine head, with the most gorgeous of eyes. Very nice cushioning in harmony with her feminine pretty face. Nice reach of neck into good front assembly. Lovely hair shaped feet. Excellent tailset. Displaying a very happy temperament at all times.

2nd: 735 CALVERT, Mr K & Mrs G - Somergemz Kinky Boots

Slightly more mature than 1, with so much to admire. Her balance and shape are really excellent. Pretty headpiece with beautiful eye - large, dark and oh so round showing small amount of eye white, forward facing with look of astonishment. Excellent width to underjaw. Lovely cushioning. Moved ok on the day. Beautifully feathered coat with chrysanthemum tail.

A really super class of young puppies, the breed is very fortunate to have such lovely up and coming to go forward with. I am sure they will all change places as they mature and develop, I was really splitting hairs as I was spoiled for choice.

1st: 755 GULLON, Mr C J - Adreeam Alice

White and Red, that would look lovely in any colour! Everything about her screams, “look at me” - and I listened! She screams femininity. That elegant shape, her carriage and beautiful size are just super! She has a most beautiful head, another that is constructed of a series of circles and gentle curves. Her skull is round in shape, large rounded eyes with excellent forward facing placement. Her eyes are so very dark in colour, which only enhances the small mount of white in the inner corner giving the look of astonishment. Her nose placement is excellent, on a line with her eyes. Beautiful cushioning and bubblegum cheeks. Excellent width to underjaw with nice upsweep. She has a most beautiful figure 3 head profile from the side. I must comment on her amazing open nostrils. Elegant reach of neck with great shoulder layback. Good front. Excellent chest for one so young. Excellent tailset with a flowing well feathered chrysanthemum tail. Well feathered coat of wonderful silky, cool to the touch texture. She moved soundly and happily while holding an elegant shape on the move. One of few Chin on the day with the desired elevation movement. She is such a a showgirl, I don’t believe she even needs anyone to hold the lead. If that wasn’t enough, she has not one but two Buddha thumbprints on the back of her rounded skull. Best Puppy in Breed and delighted to see her shortlisted in Best puppy In Show.

2nd: 752 FARMER, Mr George William - Sangria Dolly Mixture

She is really a sweetheart. I loved her for size and type. Gorgeous rounded skull with beautiful large eyes, well placed showing a look of astonishment. Well set, small V-shaped ears with nice feathering. Feminine face, with nice cushioning. Nice neck into a great front. Excellent chest. Very nice bone and substance throughout. Beautiful hare shaped feet with feathering. Level topline with well set tail with a chrysanthemum coming on nicely. I would prefer her a touch shorter in back on the day, but she is still maturating. Level topline and moved well. A very exciting puppy.

Nice width to underjaw. Good reach of neck. Dainty, slender bone. A little out of body coat, but with feathering in all of the right places. Gorgeous hare shaped feat with feathering. 1st: 802 VAN DE BURGT, Mr C & STRANGE, Mr D - Norvanik Candy Kisses

Aptly named because she is as sweet as sugar! I adored her absolutely classic type! Beautiful size and shape. Very elegant, very feminine with a cobby body to boot! Beautifully rounded skull. Excellent large, dark round eyes showing a small amount of white to give a look of astonishment. Nose perfectly set into her skull in a line with her eyes, with good open nostrils. Well placed ears with lovely feathering. Beautiful cushioning enhances her feminine face. Nice width to underjaw with good up-sweep with beautiful figure 3 side profile. Excellent bone, with great substance throughout. Superb hare shaped feet with feathering at the tips. Level topline with well set tail. She pushed hard for the Res CC, but did not have the conditioning of RBCC and at this stage it mattered, but in time it will come. I adored her, I want her!

2nd: 788 SCHEMEL, Dr A - Bentwood Iki Ningyo

White and Red. Miss elegant! Her silhouette screamed both ‘I am a Japanese Chin & I am a Princess’. Loved her size and shape. Roundest of skulls with beautiful large, dark and round eyes showing desired look of astonishment. Good nose placement with nice nostrils. Beautiful cushioning with rounded lips. Nice width to underjaw. Excellent upsweep giving a lovely figure 3 head profle. Elegant reach of neck into good front. Nice depth of chest. Excellent bone. Lovely hare shaped feet with feathering. Spirit level top line with excellent tailset. Her tail feathering falling over her body like an oriental chrysanthemum. Moved very soundly. A little more coat and feathering is all that’s needed to complete this beautiful painting.

Red Sable and White with dark overlay. She was my biggest surprise of the day. She is so elegant in shape and make, really a beautiful type. Feminine headpiece with round skull. Large, dark and round eyes with a look of astonishment. Well placed and set nose. Nice amount of cushioning to offset her feminine face. Elegant reach of neck into good front. Elegant, slender and strong bone. One of the best hare shaped feet of the day, with feathering at the tip. Level topline with beautifully set and feathered chrysanthemum tail. Excellent angulation which she used to power around the ring, holding an elegant shape on the move. A tad more coat would complete the picture. I would prefer her red was brighter and clearer, but could not overlook her many qualities because of her darker shade of red sable.

2nd: 775 POTTS, Mr R & Mrs J - Adreeam Highland Chincess

This is one beautiful bitch. Very nice size and shape. A tad less body would really show off her elegant construction. Beautiful headpiece, round skull. Gorgeous large eyes showing beautiful look of astonishment. Nice cushioning with excellent underjaw. Excellent depth of chest. Excellent bone. Loved her hare shaped foot with feathering at the tip. Beautifully feathered coat. Well set tail with feathering overhanging like a chrysanthemum. Nicely angulated rear with muscle that powered her around the ring. An assist to any kennel.

Lemon and White. My notes are of no help to me here, because all they say is “WOW, head, hair shape, LOVE HER”. I have judged her once before, and on the day she was not happy, and it physically hurt me. Today, she was full of energy, at times too much, but I’d rather that! Her owner handler is to be commended for how much work she has put into her ring work. She positively oozes breed type! For me personally, I think her headpiece is as close to perfection as you could wish for. The size of her head is large in comparison to her body. It is very rounded with plenty of width, and is just a work of art, a series of gentle curves, circles and crescents. Her eyes are large in size. So very round, dark, with desired white in the inner corner giving a look of astonishment, while still facing forward thanks to their super setting and placement in her skull. Excellent nose placement and set with open nostrils. Nice width to underjaw, elegant cushioning. Gorgeous figure 3 head profile when viewed from the side. Moderate length of neck, into good front. Excellent depth of chest, the cobbiest of bodies! She is so square! Excellent body and bone while retaining her elegant appearance. Well set tail, overflowing with feathering representing a chrysanthemum. She is dripping in beautifully presented silky hair. So much feathering dancing in the wind as she moves, it’s like watching a ballet, at time she even dances! She has beautiful hare feet with profuse feathering, like a paint brush. Pushed hard for BOB, she moved with such confidence, elevation and precision in the class and challenge, but in the final run off for BOB, the Male stepped up and moved so well each time, while this Princess gave her owner a harder time. Although not declared BOB today, if I could take one dog home, it would be her! Bitch CC, Best Red & White In Breed and RBOB.

Class 208 OB (6 Entries) Abs: 2

This was also a super class! All 4 are of champion quality, one girl had to pay the price for being out of coat, as it came down to the wire. I think all 4 will do great things for the breed in the whelping box and on another day, I would happily award each a CC.

She is fabulous! I had longed to judge her! Ideal for size, and her shape is excellent too! She is wonderfully cobby. Prettiest of heads, her skull is beautifully round. Gorgeous, soulful eyes. Large in size, dark in colour with beautiful amount of white showing to give a look of astonishment. Perfect nose placement inside skull, set on a level line with her eyes. Beautiful amount of cushioning with those cute bubblegum cheeks. Nice width to underjaw, with good up-sweep, it is no wonder she had that beautiful figure 3 head profile. Moderate neck into a good front. Excellent bone and wonderful substance throughout. Her muscle conditioning and hair was exemplary and is to be commended. She moved with such confidence. I am excited to see what she will produce. Reserve Bitch CC.

Another I have judged as a youngster, she was lovely then and has certainly developed into a beautiful lady. Beautifully typey female of excellent size, shape and substance. Loved her headpiece, excellent round shape and large size, with look of astonishment. Super nose placement and set on a line with eyes. Great cushioning with nice width to underjaw. Lovely figure 3 head profile when looked at from the side. Moderate neck. Great depth to chest, stands slightly wide in front at times. Level topline, excellent tailset. Beautifully feathered coat. Strong rear, she moved like a woman on a mission. Great asset to any kennel.
