BEST VETERAN DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN IN SHOW - CH GAZSTAFFS BLACK MAGIC
The absolute honour of judging dogs at The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club Championship Show being held to celebrate its 90th anniversary fell to me. What a special day, not only for the quality of dogs on display but also for the spectacle that the hardworking committee put on for everyone to enjoy – attention to detail in everything, from the decorated hall to the special catalogues and ring cards, prizes for both the placed dogs and the raffle in abundance, a spectacular Parade of Champions and topped off by the touching tribute to our fallen heroes at 11am. A day not to be forgotten. My thanks must also be given to Karen Johnson and Shaun Stone for keeping the ring in order and a smile on my face throughout the day, but mostly to the Staffords that came before me on the mat. I found no issues at all with breathing, and this time no major evidence of really narrow nostrils. Dentition in the main was fine, there are some lower canine teeth which are quite short so sit at the edge of the upper gum but are not ‘misplaced’ and therefore were not penalised. I was disconcerted by a number with short sternums; it is something bitch owners should consider when choosing a male for stud as it will not easily be bred out. Movement overall couldn’t be described as with economy of effort. There was a fair amount of springy movement, not showing the required reach and drive a Stafford should have, evident because of some steep shoulder placement with narrow fronts, and lack of width of hindquarters. There is also a world of difference between a dog moving soundly and moving obediently; even with those that move disobediently it is necessary to be able to see enough to know the dog is sound. As with each time any of us judge there were some classes with so much quality I was spoiled for choice, and there were others where I was looking at compromises. However, each one of them showed what I wanted to see, that they were confident and outgoing, some showed spark towards each other which was another cause for a smile, especially in the veteran class. Life in the old dogs yet!
VETERAN DOG (10, 2 abs)
1ST CH GAZSTAFFS BLACK MAGIC - BEST OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN IN SHOW
The age range in the class can make it more difficult to make decisions, the 1st placed being at the younger end. Today condition of the winning dogs entered gave away no clues as to their ages. I judged this chap first when he was a junior and it’s been good to watch his growth and development, then suddenly he’s a Veteran. The years may have passed but he’s still carrying all the same virtues he ever had – a good overall balance and outline, without any exaggeration, a pleasing depth to skull and length to muzzle with typical expression enriched by his dark eyes, neat ear carriage and clean lips. A decent width to his front and shape of rib leading back to good width across the back end, he was steady on the move. In the challenge for Best Veteran in Show he gave way to the charms of the lady
2ND CH NORTHSTAFF NOTORIOUS
A stronger dog all round than the 1st placed, this chap has great width to both his skull and muzzle, with strength of underjaw, pronounced cheek muscles and clean lips, all complimented by strong pigmentation. I particularly liked his round bone and neat feet, with correct slope of pastern. His strong neck and correct shoulder placement lead to a compact body with good stifle angulation, and his coat is great. He gave way today to the younger dog but he, and the 3rd placed dog behind him, certainly made a good case for the older guys in the class.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (6, 1 abs)
The class was a lively mix of promising structure and puppy antics. A cliché, but I can see these first two placed dogs swapping places a few times and the competition will be enjoyed.
1ST JACOBEAUS THE LEGACY
This young hopeful was bursting with enthusiasm and seemed to delight in creating mischief. His head shows good development with good width and depth through the skull and muzzle, no excess flesh and thin, rose ears. Clean in lip and with round, dark eyes creating a typical expression. He showed a decent width to his front and up on his toes, though handler needs to ensure he doesn’t stand him with feet turning in! His brisket is dropping and rib developing although at this stage appears a little short in length. Although he had a little less rear angulation than the 2nd placed dog, he did show a firm topline and correct tail set.
2ND KEEPASTAFF LET’S LOAD IT (IMP DNK)
I really liked the extra strength this lad had throughout though in the nip and tuck of decisions it was the extra bit of lift that the 1st placed dog has in front at this stage that edged it. Another with a melting expression, beautiful eye placement and ear carriage with good head proportions, width and depth. He has beautifully neat feet with good padding, rib developing nicely and a width and strength to back end with bend of stifle to be admired, all set off with a neat tail set and carried well. He secured his place over a shapely pied baby as at this stage he is more ‘together’, but it will be good to watch them all develop

PUPPY DOG (8,4 abs))
This class was about compromise with moments of coordination and moments of puppy playfulness being shown, and that’s what this should all be about at this stage.
1ST DEKAYRO’S EYE OF THE TIGER - BEST PUPPY DOG
Showing balance in head and body proportions, this dark brindle young man is already showing he knows what is required of him. Unexaggerated in head with dark eyes and very neat ears, thin and correctly carried, his neck is clean, though the handler tended to overstretch it a little, but he has enough width and forechest with well-placed shoulders. His feet are neat and his pasterns strong. More compact than the 2nd placed dog he showed decent width to his rear and although not totally parallel on the move his movement was more purposeful.
2ND NOUCAMP NOTHING COMPARES TWO YOU
A very handsome black brindle pup, with a smashing overall head shape showing strength and depth, with cheek muscles developing nicely. When stacked his outline was impressive and he has a good rapport with his handler. His feet were a little flatter than the winning dog and he was longer in loin but he has strength in pasterns and an excellent bend of stifle with a correct tail set.

JUNIOR DOG (17, 3 abs)
This class was one of quality throughout and as hard as the decisions were to make it makes for a good future for the breed
1ST JOJALANE I DRINK WINE
I wrote in my notes ‘chaotic but quality’! Only just moved up in class with the bigger boys, this fellow can hold his own in terms of attributes. His balanced head shape with no excess flesh shows an engaging expression, great pigmentation, and a good length and depth of muzzle with tight lips. His clean, muscular neck leads to well placed shoulders and a correct front assembly shown in the reach when he moved, brisket to elbow and good width to front with round bone. To be critical, his feet could be neater but he has a good slope of pastern. Ribs developing and back end showing strength, his topline is level and he is close coupled. I think the glint in his eye said “I might stand still…” and I’m sure he was convinced the ring was his personal playground. I loved his exuberance and am sure he’ll go on to great heights. Good luck!
2ND BROCKMAR TOP BOY
Different style of dog, but equally full of quality and no wonder at all that he has done so well in his short show career so far. His whole shape epitomizes strength and power, he looks like a gladiator, commanding your attention. A broad skull with distinct stop, he has a characteristic expression, using his well set and carried ears to enhance. I loved his weight of bone, defined body with great rear angulation. On the move although unsettled he showed required drive – just pipped at the post today

1ST BIGGLESWICK DEVILS DREAM – BEST DOG
Having competed alongside this dog a few times I haven’t really taken notice of him as I’ve been busy concentrating on my own dog in the ring, but this time, being on the other side of things my first impression was ‘Wow!’ His overall type, shape, style – all impressive and turned out really smartly. He has great proportions in both head and body and balances out so well. As criticism he could be angled a little more in stifle but the width of rear ensured that he propelled with effortless drive on the mat. His confidence flowed and he carried his tail a little proud but when free stood it is set on fine. He has strong, round bone - nothing flimsy here – neat, padded feet, good width to chest and depth to brisket with spring of rib and tuck up evident. There were some very good dogs in this class so he had to go some to head it, but he didn’t put a paw wrong throughout and in the line up I moved him up alongside the Limit and Open class winners and he still filled my eye so got the well deserved CC. The Bitch CC got Best in Show on the nod from the Referee but I doubt that spoiled this lad’s day and I think he will have a fair few good days yet. Very best of luck to all involved
2ND ELITEBULL VALENTINE JW
As noted above, this was a very competitive class so this smasher did really well to give the winner such a close run. Another sound and free moving dog, he kept his topline well on the move. Not quite the neat feet of the class winner, he nonetheless matched him on width and depth of body. He was turned out in excellent nick, showing good muscle definition and with a beautiful coat of correct texture. I noted a nice drop of brisket and development of cheek muscles, clean lips and dark eyes in particular. Another dog that I’m pretty sure will continue to see himself placed at the top end of the line through his show career

NOVICE DOG (7, 4 abs)
1ST HAPPYSTAFF HAKUNA MATATA
A standard dog with an unexaggerated outline, albeit a little heavier in loin than the 2nd placed, he has a typical head shape with distinct stop, tight lips, noticeable underjaw and no excess flesh with a keen expression. He was less settled in front on the move but showed good width to his rear movement which helped secure this class and he held his topline well. His brindle coat was in good order and he has good pigmentation throughout.
2ND SKYLAND TILIKUM
Unplaced in the quality junior class, this dog has good proportions while still having some maturing to do. Another with very good pigmentation, he has beautiful dark eyes that give a very engaging expression. His cheek muscles are developing, and he has decent width to his front with strong pasterns and tidy feet. A nicely schooled dog who responded really well to his handler
3RD ANTROBOSS DEVIL RIDER
GRADUATE DOG (8, 4 abs)
Not an easy class to judge as the exhibits were varied, with some happy to show off their virtues and some trying their best to hide them!
1ST BULLBROTHERS THE NAVIGATOR
This dog has a well-built frame with solid, round bone. He has a broad skull with required depth through and a muzzle of sufficient length and good width. Clean lipped and with neat rose ears of good texture, he also has dark eyes which enhance the overall typical Stafford expression. Clean of front, up on his toes with strong pasterns, he has width and drop of brisket, and a good spring of rib. His overall substance won him the class today
2ND TYNEVIEW RIZZIUS LUSSO
Today this chap was quite unsettled but I managed to see enough to make the decision. He has less strength overall than the class winner but is nevertheless of good type and with unexaggerated features. I liked his proportions, in particular his width of muzzle with strength of underjaw. His neck is strong and leads to a well-shaped body with good shoulder placement, decent width to front with a turn out at pastern and correct rear angulation, finished off with the neatest whip tail

POST GRADUATE DOG (11, 2 abs)
1st SHARMARA LACRNUM INFLAMARI AT DUFFMAN JW
This class had quite a mixed bunch but this standard red dog had the edge secured by his overall condition and type. He has a broad and deep skull with pronounced cheek muscles and a muzzle of good proportion. Enhanced by excellent pigmentation he has an earnest expression, with very neat ears, thin and carried correctly. He is muscled well over the shoulders and has noticeable ribs and tuck. He worked well with his lady handler and a decent width to his back end propelled him around the ring in good style
2ND MARENYSTAFF LORD SPIDERMAN (IMP ESP)
This pied chap is a different style being rangier but nevertheless carries breed type and is nicely put together. He was giving his handler quite a hard time but the glimpses I got of him when he thought I wasn’t looking were the ones that sealed the deal. He too has very neat ear carriage, coal black eyes and great pigment, though with less width to his muzzle. He stood up on his toes when he was playing the game and has a well-made front assembly with slight turn out and slope at pasterns. Turned out in great nick he has good rear angulation and was another that moved with good drive from behind. His coat was noticeably the best on the day. He had a battle on his hands with the 3rd placed dog who is sound as a pound but I just couldn’t coax any animation from him today

LIMIT DOG (20, 8 abs)
1st POME’S WORLD UNITED COLORS
A great class, teeming with quality and only six dogs could be placed. This sound red dog won by virtue of his overall balance and substance. Balanced throughout with width and depth, he has a very attractive expression guaranteed by great pigment and well-placed eyes and ears which ultimately secured him the place. Strength in skull showing powerful underjaw, his muscular neck leads to a shapely body. He has round bone, good width to his front and rear and was turned out in top condition. Extremely well ribbed he has a good tuck up and correct tail set. On the move he was steady and purposeful. Liked him a lot and certainly in the mix at the end
2nd ELLCHANSHA CHARM THE DEVIL AT MOORSTAR
Another Stafford of very good proportions and in the peak of condition. This dog has a strong head but without exaggeration or any excess fleshiness, correct skull to muzzle ratio, with good ear carriage. He has a good depth of brisket, just a touch narrower front than the class winner, with straight and with strong pasterns. In body he shows spring of rib and is a standard dog with good angles front and rear. On the mat he moved freely and just tipped the wink over the dog behind him who was also very stylish. He lives up to his name and is definitely a charmer

1st CH HASBURYSTAFF TOP GUN (AI) JW – RESERVE BEST DOG
A confident showman with undeniable presence, this dog exemplifies breed type with a substantial and balanced frame. He has excellent head proportions and strength of underjaw, with a strong neck leading into a shapely body with tuck up at loin. Upstanding and with a good strength of pastern his flashy markings and great pigmentation just enhance the complete picture. A good width to his back end and correct angles meant he strutted his stuff around the ring with the required reach and drive. Turned out in the pink, I loved his style and was delighted to award him the Reserve CC
2nd WAYSTAFF STRIKES MAYHEM (AI)
A dog that ticks a lot of boxes with his balance and type. He is another with excellent pigmentation which really is the icing on the cake, his coal black eyes demand and hold attention. He has a good breadth to his skull, with good muzzle to skull ratio, and although he chose most of the time not to use his ears, he has a typical Stafford expression. Strength in neck, flowing into a good width of chest, with just enough brisket and a decent back end meant he moved freely around the ring maintaining a level topline and correct tail set. His coat is short and smooth with lovely texture and today it was a close decision between 2nd and 3rd who also held at lot of similar qualities. Very smart dogs
