Manchester Dog Show Society
I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of Manchester for the opportunity to judge my breed at their prestigious show where I enjoyed for a Thursday a large entry which included many exhibits of high quality the judging of which I was able to complete in good time aided by my two excellent stewards. After being actively involved with the breed (in which I still exhibit) for over 40 years and having had the privilege of awarding CC’s in the breed on 9 occasions plus the thrill of making up 3 Champions 2 of which were home bred and shown I feel that I am entitled to comment on the state of the breed on two fronts. Firstly, the breed in my opinion has over the years deteriorated to the degree where we have too many exhibits showing a total lack of width in both body proportions and movement, also dentition needs to be watched as I had several exhibits with incorrect mouths which for a gundog is totally unacceptable plus excess weight which I also found is no substitute for width. Secondly the more and more obvious element of bad sportsmanship both at the shows and even more so after the shows using social media when after the show an exhibitor posted a rant using foul and totally inappropriate language criticising my decisions and, in my opinion, even more annoying a fellow exhibitor’s dog presumably just because they failed to win everything, they thought they should. Such behaviour should not be tolerated and I would suggest to that exhibitor that if they cannot accept decisions on the day whether they wish to remain within the breed the showing of which is after all a hobby and not life and death.
