South Yorkshire Whippet Club Championship Show – 12th July 2025
My thanks to SYWC for inviting me to judge dogs and to my stewards on the day for keeping proceedings moving along. Thanks too to the exhibitors for their entries and sportsmanship. It was a blisteringly hot day and some were affected by the conditions a little more than others.
VD (5,0)1 – Allansson & MacDonald’s Jasarat Salted Caramel of Macalldon JW, 7½-year-old fawn/white trim who stands well over the ground. Nicely boned with a look of real quality to him. Moved very well today, especially in profile. Nicely sprung pasterns, good curves to both topline and underline, and shown in lovely bloom and condition. BVIS. 2 – Myers & Pilkington’s Supeta’s Show And Tell Astrazone, 7-year-old brindle/white parti. Well balanced and of a nice moderate type. Good depth in front, moved steadily and accurately but not quite using his hocks as well as the first placed today.
BPD (1,0) 1 – Winkley-Balmer’s Edenwhip If I Can Dream, 4½-month-old fawn. Lovely for overall type and has plenty of bone. Good layback of shoulder and smooth transition from neck into shoulder. Good profile movement with pleasing rear drive and a steady, calm demeanour for one so young.
MPD (3,1) 1 – Schofield’s Bowdonia No Way Jose at Runforest, 9-month brindle with good strong bone. Moderately long neck with good sweep to topline and underline. Scores in profile movement. Still a little loose coming towards, as you’d expect at this stage. Nice spring of pastern and good width of thigh. Stands naturally over plenty of ground. 2 – Sykes’ Veredon Bobs Your Uncle, 7-month old fawn/white parti. Shorter cast than first and has a look of type and quality to him. Clean through neck and shoulder. Needs to steady in front and drop into his pasterns. Good parallel movement going away from me. One I feel needs time to develop.
PD (4,1) 1 – Mallinson’s Edenwhip Oregano, 11-month brindle of pleasing type and quality. Stands well over the ground without excessive angulation. Smooth through neck and shoulder with a particularly good forechest for his age, giving good depth of brisket and plenty of heart and lung room. Good spring of rib for age. Flows through both topline and underline. Steady, ground-covering profile movement and true out and back. A really nice puppy who impressed me enough today to take the RCC. 2 – Schofield’s Bowdonia No Way Jose at Runforest.
JD (5,1) 1 – Wood’s Ardencote Keep Dreaming, fawn dog of pleasing type. Classic and moderate throughout with a workmanlike look to him. Clean neck and shoulder with good infill and depth of brisket. Decent in profile movement and true out and back. Good width to his thigh, just enough spring in pastern. Generally a sound, honest dog of good size. 2 – Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Never Too Late JW, nicely balanced and typey with a little more scope than first. Full of quality. Clean through neck and shoulder with flowing lines through his topline and underline. Moved well in profile but was quite wide in rear action today.
YD (4,0) 1 – Brew’s Crosscop Wanna Go For A Ride with Supeta, quality brindle who stands easily over the ground without excessive rear angulation. Nicely boned and stands well over his front with good depth of brisket and curves to top and underline. Sound on the move with excellent front extension. Drives well in rear and really holds his shape in profile. 2 – Wilton-Clark’s Ch. Shalfleet Oliver Twist, brindle/white parti. Another nice quality dog. Slightly higher on the leg but still stands over the ground. Good reach of neck and lay of shoulder with well sprung pasterns. Nicely bladed bone. Moved soundly in all directions but tended to flatten a little in topline today.
ND (7,2) 1 – Spicer’s Jothryn Muchacho, brindle of nice moderate type. Quality outline with flowing lines. Strong, steady mover and true out and back. A sound, honest dog I thought. 2 – Ellam’s Frontrunner’s Encore For Clionys, another brindle, more rangy in type and up to size. Shown in good condition. Good front construction and moved well enough.
GD (8,1) 1 – Poole, Winkley-Balmer & Winkley’s Shulune Thrills N’Spills for Edenwhip, brindle of nice type and quality. Good reach in neck and clean, well-laid shoulder. Good spring of pastern. Stands naturally over the ground. Generally sound in movement and reaches out well in profile. A little close behind today. 2 – Burton’s Ballenbreich Harris JW, another brindle with similar attributes to the winner. A look of real thoroughbred quality to him, though today I just preferred the steadier movement of the first.
PGD (6,1) 1 – Spicer’s Jothryn Parti Time, another brindle of lovely type and flowing lines. Balanced and co-ordinated and shown in lovely coat and condition. Correct in front assembly with good spring of pastern. Decent bone and substance. I thought this one was generally very well put together. Moved well in profile but a tad close behind. 2 – Brooks’ Collooney For Your Eyes Only, another pleasing brindle of nice type and quality. Nicely balanced and good for size. Was affected a little by the conditions today, I felt. Moved well enough, but I thought first placed just put a little more into it today.
MLD (8,2) 1 – Searle & Rawlinson’s Reffton Tibalt at Whipsearle JW CW’25, typey fawn who I thought was full of quality. Tight musculature and clean in outline which draws your eye. Moderate all through but stands with ease over the ground. One who looks like he could do a day’s work. Good reach in neck and good depth of brisket. Moved very well today. 2 – Burton’s Ballenbreich Harris JW.
LD (11,2) This was an interesting class. The first three could easily have changed places on another day. 1 – Poole, Morris & Waddell’s Falconcrag Match Maker At Crosscop, fawn who is right up my street. Bang on for type and quality and generally well put together. Good for size and correctly boned. Good depth and infill. Another who has a commanding presence in the ring, which makes him difficult to ignore. Moved out well. 2 – Morland’s Zoraden Master Baker JW, another of very nice type and quality. A little more moderate than first, but scores in overall balance and has a definite quality to him. Scores in movement with good reach and drive in profile. Lots to like here, but today I thought first was just a little more “my type”.
OD (4,0) 1 – Green & Ratcliffe’s Crosscop Smooth Operator with Arrodare, young brindle who caught my eye for his breed type and overall balance. Well constructed all through with a definite quality to him. Flowing in outline and shown in good condition and muscle tone. Needs time, I think, to develop further and fill his frame. Good reach of neck into well-laid shoulder. Decent depth to his brisket with typical tuck up. Optimum angulation in rear with low, strong hocks which he uses well on the move. Really good reach and drive in profile. Best of the bunch today I thought, so I was pleased to award him his first CC. RBIS. 2 – Soffe’s Zoraden Macchiato JW, very typey fawn/white trim. Slightly more moderate in build than first placed but scores very highly for type and balance. Shown in lovely bloom and condition today. Pleasing outline with good infill and depth of brisket. Well constructed both fore and aft. Moved well and deserved his place today.
Sp Racing/Lure Coursing D (4,1) 1 – Mould’s Warden William, neat brindle of lovely type and overall construction. Full of quality. Good spring of pastern. Moved OK but I felt he needed a little more oomph today – perhaps affected by the heat. 2 – Bowsher’s Blues And Tooze, blue/white trim. More scopy in type and outline. Shown in good condition. Generally sound and steady on the move.
SBD (6,0) 1 – Mallinson’s Edenwhip Oregano. 2 – Blackburn’s Mazargo Whole Lotta Trouble, nice for type and showed well today. Sound and steady on the move all round. Scores in neck and shoulder. Nice curvy outline and decent angulation in rear without being overdone.
