Midland & Eastern Counties Welsh Corgi Club

Breed: Welsh Corgi (Pembroke)

The Midland and Eastern Counties Welsh Corgi Club

Championship Show Sunday 4th May 2025

Welsh Corgis (Pembroke) Judge – Sarah Taylor

It is always a pleasure to judge a club show and Midland & Eastern Counties are to be congratulated for the smooth running of their show. My thanks to my two stewards and I have to say how lovely it was to have a very keen youngster learning the ropes, he did a great job.

I feel sure everyone in the breed is only too aware that we are not in great shape overall. Numbers have fallen dramatically and so sadly has much of the quality that was present in the breed from the 1970s until recent years. It was good to see quite a few new exhibitors and I sincerely hope they will stay the course, keep the entries from further depletion and hopefully manage to breed some quality puppies.

One or two issues struck me that need to be considered. Firstly the standard requires feet to be oval with the two centre toes slightly in advance of the two outer toes and I was particularly struck by many who failed in this. Round feet, much like one would expect in a Cardigan Corgi, are not desirable in a Pembroke. There were certainly a number who did not have the length of ribcage that is so important and I think we have been seeing this for quite some time.

Minor Puppy Dog (1)

1 Irvings Twinan The Beat Goes On

Just 6 months old this R/W is already a real eye catcher as he holds a very smart balanced outline with his good length of neck and body. Has the substance and angulation to hopefully develop well and he moved out with purpose driving off his short hocks. Excellent presentation and an easy BP going on to take BPIS.

Puppy Dog (3)

1 Miller & Haslams Monarchcor Chase Your Dream Avec Meitza A.I.

Quite well grown and hopefully this R/W has done all his growing. He moved well enough to take this class and had better feet than second. Found him a touch long in foreface.

2 Crichtons Cherastayne Real Quiet

Presents quite a pleasing overall picture but would prefer better feet.

3 Ashbridges Cherastayne Smarty Jones at Chililabomwe

Junior Dog (3)

1 Crichtons Cherastayne Real Quiet

2 Youngs Ermyn Lionheart

R/W who had pleasing head type and good feet. Not quite as good on the move as the winner.

3 Evans Hortonpoint Blue Lagoon

Novice Dog (2)

1 Irvings Twinan The Beat Goes On

2 Youngs Ermyn Lionheart

Yearling Dog (3)

1 Wyers Brynlea Creslow Paint It Black at Cottivy (imp U.S.A.)

This lovely tri has the quality and breed type that I was looking for. He is ideal for size and possesses enough bone and substance for a male without being overdone. Head of balanced proportions and shows great expression. Moved with purpose keeping a strong level topline. Beautifully presented and shown to advantage. Delighted to award him the CC which I gather gave him his title, BOB and he went on to take BIS.

2 Spaldings Brownieglen Hot spoon Trix

A smart tri who scored for his good head type. Couldn’t match the winner on the move and would prefer a stronger front.

3 Hulse & Adams Twinan Raise The Bar for Fablecroft

Graduate Dog (1)

1 Evans Hortonpoint Blue Lagoon

R/W dog was placed third in Junior where he was very unsettled. Fortunately in this class he had calmed somewhat but was rather erratic on the move.

Post Graduate Dog (1)

1 Wyers Cottivy Coronation Prince

Stood alone but lots to like about this smart looking R/W of good size and type. He looks fine on the move coming and going but just shows a tendency to fall away over the croup which was evident in side gait.

Limit Dog (3)

1 Hulse & Adams Babaneira Kensington at Fablecroft

A difficult class with this attractive R/W scoring with better angulation and length of rib preoducing a more balanced outline. He moved out well.

2 Aylotts Barwal Bager Boy (NBT)

Great coat and condition on this R/W who is on the smaller side. Enthusiastic on the move and just tends to run up losing his topline. Attention to nails would improve foot shape.

3 Ropers Cardigan Bay

Open Dog (6)

1 McColls Ch Unita Mentale Ernesto JW (UKR imp) NBT

One I have watched with interest since he first appeared in the ring and he certainly catches the eye with his great showmanship displaying his many virtues. Lovely head proportions producing a sensible masculine expression. Holds a strong level topline and is well angulated. Put down in great condition, he moved well enough but I did just wonder if he was a tad slimmer he might move out with a bit more drive however a worthy Res CC.

2 Irvings Born To Be Your Hublot Big Bang at Twinan (Imp HUN)

Lots to like about this R/W with good length and balance, strong bone and substance. He moved out well and was put down in first class order. Preferred head of winner.

3 Wyers Cottivy Fernando

Special Beginners Dog (7)

1 Hulse & Adams Babaneira Kensington at Fablecroft

2 Cutts Haresfoot Fates Align JW NBT

Lots to like close up to winner and placed reserve in a good open close.

3 Crichtons Cherastayne Real Quiet

Good Citizen Dog (3)

1 Crichtons Cherastayne Real Quiet

2 Spaldings Brownieglen Hot spoon Trix

3 Evans Hortonpoint Blue Lagoon

Veteran Dog (2)

1 Haslams Ch Meitza Dark N’Debonair

This tri is such an eye catching dog with his lovely head type with dark eye and great expression. He is very animated on the move and standing shows a balanced outline. Shown and presented to best advantage. Best Veteran dog.

2 Maddox & Hedgepath Ch CIB Ch/21 6 GCH (Am) Ch (AM) Trifecta Eagle Scout to Salvenik (Imp Japan) I judged this R/W boy a few years ago and like the winner he is carrying his years well. It was a close decision as they are both lovely dogs but I just preferred the head of the winner.

Baby Puppy Bitch (1)

1 Hollingworths Highashes Hits The Spot

Well named and a delightful R/W baby taking it all in her stride. Presents a lovely overall picture with attractive head type. Went well on the move with good feet and bone. One to watch for the future.

Minor Puppy Bitch (3)

1 Irvings Twinan Dance To The Beat

Another R/W who is full of promise and will no doubt grow on well as she has plenty of bone and substance for 6 months.

2 Jeffersons Karisoke Sweet Rose

A different type to the winner and not as settled yet. Feet could be better and winner scored in head.

3 Coates Durrcor Luna Eclipse

Puppy Bitch (2, 1abs)

1 Warners Monarchcor Sweet Dreams (ai)

R/W standing alone here but presents a good overall balanced outline with reach of neck leading to level topline and body length. She needs to improve in rear movement.

Junior bitch (2)

1 Irvings Twinan Stars Above

Another very nice quality bitch from this kennel. Plenty of bone but feet perhaps a touch on the round side. Liked her head type, well angulated and scored here on the move.

2 Hollingworths Twinan Rising Star at Highashes

A rangier type R/W with not quite the substance of the winner and longer foreface. Preferred her feet but not as positive on the move.

Novice Bitch (5,1 abs)

1 Hollingworths Twinan Rising Star at Highashes

2 Warners Monarchcor Sweet Dreams (ai)

3 Irvings Twinan Dance To The Beat

Yearling bitch (3)

1 Hollingworths Twinan Rising Star at Highashes

2 Rutherfords Unita Mentale Khambatta at Potbelli (Imp UKR)

Attractive sable but not the overall scope of the winner. Liked her head type and she went well enough on the move.

Graduate Bitch (3, 1abs)

1 Hollingworths Twinan Rising Star at Highashes

2 Ropers Twinan Raise Your Game JW

Rangier type R/W with good length. Could use a touch more hind angulation.

Post Graduate Bitch (1)

1 Roberts Raintrees Love Never Fails at Cherastayne (Imp JPN)

R/W standing alone here but she scored with a balanced outline and reach of neck. Good feet and went well on the move especially from her strong rear.

Limit Bitch (5, 1abs)

1 Warners Monarchcor Lady Love JW

A top quality bitch I have admired this R/W for a while for her size and shape coming from good shoulder and rear angulation. Attractive head piece and she goes well on the move. Not in her best coat and condition today which just cost her in the challenge.

2 Hollingworth Highashes Plan Bee JW

Another quality bitch with a pretty head type. Good for bone and substance just not as strong in topline as the winner.

3 Irvings Twinan Sign The Card

Open Bitch (4)

1 Blance & Blance Shelton & Robertson Coventry I’m Mad On Her with Penliath (Imp U.S.A.)

I believe this light R/W did recently gain her title and she is certainly well deserving. I have in the past given the top award to several from this combination of Penliath & Coventry breeding which consistently produces the overall type the standard requires. Just right for size and so well balanced both standing and on the move holding a strong level topline. Lovely head type, beautifully presented and a comfortable CC winner.

2 Davies Haresfoot Fairy Nuff for Ermyn

Liked her overall type with plenty of bone and substance, good head and expression. Could use a bit more drive from the rear on the move.

3 Wyers Cottivy Strawberry Moon

Special Beginners Bitch (1)

1 Ropers Twinan Raise Your Game JW

Good Citizen Bitch (1)

1 Rutherfords Unita Mentale Khambatta at Potbelli (Imp UKR)

Veteran Bitch (2)

1 Maddox Ch Salvenik Scarlet Rose

I judged this lovely R/W a few years back when I awarded her the Res CC and today I was pleased to repeat that award as she has retained all her quality as a veteran. Such a feminine girl and well constructed with good feet. In lovely coat and condition and moving well.

2 Davies Ch Secret Starlight Express into Ermyn

Another lovely veteran shown in excellent condition and like the winner well made but today not quite matching her on the move.
