Paignton & District Fanciers' Association

Breed: Spaniel (American Cocker)

It was a pleasure to judge for Paignton, and my thanks for the invite. A lowish entry, a sign of the times in some ways, but you can only work with what you have. I was grateful for the collection of dogs I did have. I am however worried about some issues emerging in our breed from losing our plush muzzles and classical head shapes, Forechests are getting shallower, and length of loin is getting longer with shorter rib cages. Mouths were relatively OK in the main, however small teeth are still a problem in a few. I’d like to see slightly wider side profile movement in many exhibits. When the list gets more than a couple of things in breeding animals, it becomes a concern.

1st: SHEPPARD, Mrs V J & BRYANT, Mrs B Nasailleen Campinuf For Shadowview

A raw puppy who still has some maturity to do, but he has the hallmarks of some quality about him. He has a beautiful expression. He needs to settle into his front as he matures, but he has a pleasing spring of rib. When he cooperates he is confident enough on the move, and can use himself to advantage. He moves with a gentle sloping topline. He just needs to settle a little and relax his tail carriage a little. But I have high hopes for him in the future.

1st: EDWARDS, Mrs B Moonmist I Spy Wilbur. Black and Tan dog, with a classical old style head. He has plushness in his muzzle, and he has a beautiful expression. Today I think he showed himself better than I have seen him show before, he carried himself well using his legs well and carrying a gentle sloping topline. He has a good depth of forechest, a good lay of shoulder. He is in hard muscle, and I was impressed with what I saw. I could not deny him the RCC.

2nd: WALDEN, Miss Katherine & WALDEN, Mrs SUSAN Taramount Golden Ticket. A Buff with a slightly stronger head than the winner. He is a well put together boy in terms of his proportions. He was handled to advantage by his handler.

1st: MANSER, Mrs Amy & NELSON, Mrs Lisa Nujax Happy Halloween. This Brown and Tan boy stood alone today. He has a most beautiful head, plush muzzle and good bite. He has a moderate length of neck, he is well sprung in rib, and a good balance of length of rib to loin ratios. He is in hard condition, and shown to advantage by his handler. He was a little cocky at times which just made his tail at times go a tad higher, but it is set well at the base. He is presented immaculately and from the entry present today he was the easy CC winner. I was pleased to see him take Group 4 later in the group.

1st: SWIGCISKI, Miss Sarah & BRYANT, Mrs B Nasailleen Edge Of Glory At Cosalta. A black bitch with a beautiful eye. She has a pleasing length of muzzle, well set ears. She has a feminine head overall. She has a great spring of rib. She is in hard condition, and she carries herself with attitude in the ring and a gentle sloping topline. When she settles herself and concentrates she covers the ground quite well. She just has a habit of sometimes wanting to lift her tail a tad higher, but when she settles the tail is carried well from a well set base. She was Best Puppy in Breed and shortlisted in a strong gundog puppy group.

2nd: CLAY, Mrs G Americlass Dita Von Parti. This black and white parti is an honest girl. She probably had one of the best spring of ribs overall today. She has a lovely depth of forechest as well. Her head is pleasing, a touch throaty. She still needs to mature up a bit, and just needs to have a little extra sparkle to shout “Look at me” when she’s on the move. She is in good condition.

3rd: NELSON, Mrs L & MOSS, Mrs L Nasailleen Flicda Bird

1st: FRYER, Mrs Carole Dreamcast Elysium At Carolco. This black and white bitch has the most beautiful head and expression. She is not a big bitch, but she is balanced enough. She has a spring of rib, today she was shown on a looser lead and did cover the ground well enough. She is presented beautifully. I’m sure her time will come for a championship. She deserved the RCC today.

2nd: SUNTER, Mrs L & PINCHEN, Miss Ruby Kenoula No Regrets. A black bitch that has a lovely head and expression. She was just a little less sprung in rib than the winner for me. She moves OK, and she is presented beautifully. She has many virtues to appreciate however.

1st: CLAY, Mrs G Cutiepooch Born To Tri Americlass. A tricolour bitch, with a beautiful head and expression. She has a good depth of forechest and a good spring of rib. She is short in loin. Her coat is well presented. She just needed a little extra spark today to push for that RCC, but she was strongly considered. She can however cover the ground with super reach and drive at any speed with a wide profile gait.

2nd: IREMONGER, Miss P A Moonmist Twinkle Toes. A classical head, with the most beautiful expression. She has an adequate depth of forechest, and a nice spring of rib. She is well muscled. Today she just lost out on being a little level on the move compared to the winner.

1st: WALDEN, Miss Katherine & WALDEN, Mrs SUSAN Geenawell Gilmore Girl For Taramount VW. 13.5yr old buff lady, she has a beautiful head typical of years gone by. She has the most amazing set of teeth and big teeth! She is beautifully sprung in rib. For an old girl she covered the ground well and with ease, her tail just looked a tad low set. But she’s a credit to her owner and the breed! Best Veteran in Breed.
