Judge’s Report – Long Coat Chihuahua
I would like to begin by sincerely thanking the chihuahua exhibitors for supporting this show with such an impressive entry and on a working day too! It was the second highest entry in the Toy Group and I was privileged to have so many nice exhibits to examine.
I am, and have been very closely associated with the breed and fully acknowledge this can present its own challenges when judging. Notwithstanding, I came to the ring with no preconceived ideas and assessed every dog on the day as I found them. Some dogs favourably surprised me, whilst others may have been disappointing; such is the nature of judging.
With us all, there are certain priorities and hallmarks of the breed standard that resonate, and the following, in particular, guide my own preferences.
Small, dainty, and compact – the essential hallmark of a Chihuahua, without losing soundness or substance.
Correct body proportions – with the length from point of shoulder to point of croup being slightly longer than the height at withers.
Movement and expression – the Chihuahua being an active little dog with a brisk action, and a head of true type, with a moderately short muzzle, and most importantly, portraying a ‘saucy expression’ which sets the breed apart.
I was delighted to find several dogs that embodied these essentials, and it was particularly pleasing to reward them. Overall, I felt the breed was well represented, and I thank all exhibitors for presenting their dogs so well and for accepting my decisions in a sporting manner. When this happens, it makes judging such a pleasure.

1st: Humphreys, Mrs Lee Ch Amarantos Tobin VW. 9 ½ years. I awarded him a CC and BOB several years ago and clearly is still enjoying his time in the ring. Super head contains beautiful eyes. He is masculine but fine and dainty, being correct for overall proportions. Carries a good body and produces a lovely outline. A confident, happy and proud mover which just gave him the edge over 2. BVIB and Veteran Group 4.
2nd: Hill, Mr & Mrs L E & L A Ch Lynpix The Mexican With Becanna. 10 ½ years. Fawn Sable. Another worthy Champion, whilst different in type to 1 is equally impressive. Occasionally a little unsure of himself. Sound and true mover. Has a super body and presented in first class order.
3rd: Watts, Mrs Kerry Ch Jicara Prince Charming With Biankai.

Well placed shoulders. Tad longer in loin than 1. Moved very well making full use of well-constructed hindquarters and well laid shoulders. A tad unsure, his tail became a tad loose and hope this will settle with time.

1st: Holland-Smith, Mrs Susan Kirdanchi All That Jaz. Just out of puppy and my notes record a number of positive attributes. Well-shaped head containing beautiful eyes contributing to a most pleasing expression. I liked his overall shape and balance. Good for chest, topline and tail set. He just needs to settle in forehand movement. Most promising.
2nd: Skinner, Mrs A T Mujerosa Mr Tangles. 13 months and approaching what I consider to be a the ‘teenage’ stage. Scores in head and expression. Balanced throughout when standing. He is a steady, accurate mover, from a well put together front assembly. Hindquarters sport well let down hocks. Immature in body at present. Moved extremely well.

A promising class of aspiring youngsters.
1st: Culverhouse, Mr J D Lykath's Anduril JW. 2 years. On the move he is proud, determined and decidedly accurate. Upon examination, he sports a most appealing head; well set dark round eyes, nicely set ears and a good mouth. Correct, slightly arched neck. Super for chest and ribs. Would prefer a tad shorter loin for the perfect balance. Accurate and smart mover.
2nd: Edwards, Mrs C Chibull Vanilla Ice. 2 years and one I feel has real potential but did not make the best of himself today. He examines so well. Balanced, compact in body, well ribbed, secure in topline with a high set tail. He demonstrated glimmers of true and accurate movement but he just needs to get himself together. In super coat and condition. Close call.
3rd: Skivington, Mrs Heidi Return To Senda With Gustafski JW.

1st: Robson, Mrs Sharon Tidos Dark Destroyer. 11months. Another very promising young dog of top quality. He is, undoubtedly, going through the early days of development but gives every indication there is more to come. He is of a super shape and size. Alert and bold. Well-rounded head contains beautiful eyes. Great finish to foreface. Well laid neck and shoulders. Tail is well set, correctly angulated and held. Confident, stylish and accurate on the move. Watch this space!
2nd: Bradshaw, Ms Janet Kechua Lightning Flash. 2 ½. Beautifully proportioned and impressive to examine. Super body with well sprung ribs, deep chest. Secure topline. Of correct bone and substance. Sadly, was far from happy so did not use his tail on the move which detracted. He is a very nice dog and feel he has potential once he gains confidence.

1st: Humphreys, Mrs Lee Amarantos Meet Joe Black. 3 years. This B/T dog I judged as a youngster and now at 3 years has matured somewhat and perhaps there is a tad more to come. He has a most beautiful head giving typical expression. Masculine, whilst being small and dainty. He beautifully demonstrates that typical brisk confident action with his reach of forehand and strong rear drive covering the ground with ease which gave him the edge in this class.
2nd: Lee, Mrs Susan Tidos Trick Or Treat. 3 years. Scores in head which is expressive, balanced a proportioned. Super eyes and ear shape and set. OK teeth. Enough neck, level topline and high set tail carried well. Steady on the move but not the typical style of 1.

1st: Sangster, Mr James & Sangster, Miss Eilidh Ch Kirlasidh Young Pretender JW. 3 years, I previously awarded him a RCC as a puppy. He has now developed into a lovely dog and demonstrates the ideal balance of masculinity and daintiness. Impressive for shape and size. Gorgeous for head and expression. Gentle crest to neck which is correctly set. Body has a deep chest and good ribbing. High set sickle shaped tail is carried well. His movement is accurate, brisk and confident if not slightly arrogant! Presented in super coat and muscular condition. In the challenge he moved up a gear, which staved off the young pretenders for now! CC.
2nd: Hicks, Miss E Ch Chiquita De Oro Top Ten At Casiatodo (Imp Hun). 4 years. A worthy champion I have judged before and given honours. Lovely head, eyes and perfectly set ears which are nicely feathered. High set tail; secure topline. Well bodied. Abundant coat. Accurate on the move but sadly, he lacked vitality and sparkle today.
