English Setter, Retriever (Golden), Retriever (Labrador), Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) and Weimaraner

My thanks must go to Tony and the rest of the committee for asking me to judge at their Premier Open Show. I had a lovely welcome, which was really above and beyond from this numerically small committee, but boy did they work hard. Thank you all.

Thanks once again must go to my stewards Susan and Mairi. Everything was very slick and without fault. By the time I turned around after finishing my critiques, the dogs were in place and ready, with paperwork spot on. Thank you both.

As I state in my preambles, movement is always top of my list when considering the charges put before me. However, type came in to play more significantly at this show, as the rings were a little compact, making it quite difficult to determine the movement of some of the medium to larger Gundog breeds. From what was on show, some classes proved difficult because of the good movement, giving me a nice bit of trouble. The best of breed and best puppy winners, all showed good movement in keeping with breed, with some exhibits, excellent! Many thanks to all who chose to come under me, especially with so many other Open Shows on the same day.

English Setter

Class 199 – Puppy (1,0)

1. 178 – Forrest’s ELVISTAR FALLING IN LOVE – 9-month bitch that stood in a coat of tricolour, of lovely texture. Very well off for type, but as a slower maturing breed, is still in that puppy stage of development. Long may it last because it was lovely to see. A very pretty bitch that had some lovely features to head construction, which was only emphasised by a super soft expression. Correct in dentition. Leanness to feminine skull and muzzle, with lovely, raised brows, that were emphasised by a lovely smattering of liver. Super deep, sink pool like eyes, that were tipped with black pigmentation, very much in keeping with rest of coat colour. Fairly square in finish to muzzle. Prominence to stop that rolled into a well-shaped skull, showing good occipital protuberance. Correct in ear placement, of moderate length. These hung close to a strong neck, of good length, that showed the characteristic arch. Shoulders well set back and of correct angulation. Well off for bone, for age. Good width to front, which was clearly seen with her action on the move. Ribs well sprung for age and showing flat topline. Proportionate width over croup. Good width to upper and second thigh for one of 9-months, showing angulation reminiscent to front. On the move, showing good width behind and to front. True in footfall on the around and drive. Best of luck with her development. BP. N.B. she also did well in a strong puppy group. Well done.

Class 200 – Junior (1,0)

1. 175 – Danks-Kemish, Littlechild and Littlechild’s RAVENSETT ALLEGRA WITH ALOLFRANA – 17-month bitch that was instantly eye catching. Although stood on her own in a blue belton coat that isn’t fully mature, as to be expected, she certainly had a presence, that was only topped in the breed classes, by her litter mate in the next class. She is very balanced all over, with plenty of femininity showed without being too much. Correct in dentition. Spot on in head planes and proportions of skull to muzzle. Depth was seen here with lovely, somewhat square finish. Wide in black nose, with the pigmentation mirrored in the rims to eye. This matched so well with darkest of oval shaped eyes. These were well positioned in an oval shaped skull, that was bookended by a well-defined stop and prominent occiput. Loved the amount of workings under eye, also. Ears of correct, moderate length, set on low and folding neatly. Lovely long neck, showing elegance and yet muscular. Gentle arch was clear to see and free from being throaty. Seamless transition into well laid-back shoulders, of correct forearm to scapular ratio and angulation. Excellent depth to chest and prominence to prosternum for a bitch. Very good for spring of ribs. Width across croup was spot on, that also showed the correct, gentle fall. Angulation to rear mirroring that of front well. Close and well-arched feet. Happy in action on the move, with all the components of her construction playing their part well. Although not in the biggest ring, she showed her free moving action. Head was held high. Showed reach on the around well. If it wasn’t for her brother, would have won best of breed. Although requiring a little maturing, super prospect that I’m sure will do well.

Class 201 – Post Graduate (3,0)

1. 176 - Danks-Kemish, Littlechild and Littlechild’s RAVENSETT JUST AN ILLUSION WITH ALOLFRANA - 17-month dog that was litter mate to my 1st in Junior. This boy had a lot to live up to and boy did he! Presented beautifully in an orange belton coat, in keeping with his age. Really beautiful and imposing in the stack, showing the balance required for the breed. Everything in proportion. Gorgeous soulful expression that was given from super dark brown oval eye. Dark eyeliner pigmentation assisted nicely. These were well positioned in a strong, definitely male head, which is lovely to see. Although strong, it is still lean, with rise to sturdy stop and workings to zygomatic arch, which only help frame that expression. Correct in skull to muzzle ratio with classic finish to foreface and prominence to well-defined occipital protuberance. These all sat on a skull that was very in keeping with breed type, showing that oval from ear-to-ear shape. Pigment of liver to wide nostrils, matching tones of coat so well. Ears of moderate length and silky texture hung close to skull and bordered a strong, elegant neck, showing that all important slight arch/crest. This transitioned cleanly into the lovely forequarters. Scapulars are well set back of good width. Correct in front angulation and ratio of scapular to humerus. Straight in forearm. Width and depth to chest, well sprung in rib on a body of moderate length. Strength to loin that provided a level topline. Width over croup that had a gentle slope. In gundogs I am very eager to see width to rear muscles and this boy has it already, in both upper and second thigh. Well-bent at stifle with angulation balanced with fore construction. This all made for a super profile. Again, he did not disappoint on the move. Showing width behind, and front, with that graceful action. On the around, had plenty of reach and drive. Very difficult to fault. This boy will be going places as he matures. I hear he also did extremely well in a hotly contested Kennel Club Junior Warrant qualifying heat, gaining 1st. Loved this boy. BOB.

2. 177 - Forrest’s ELVISTAR A BOY NAMED SUE – 2.5-year-old male presented in an orange belton coat of some prolificacy. Strong in male head proportions which was so appealing and in keeping with larger frame. This certainly made him stand out as a dog. Balance seen between muzzle and skull proportions that was differentiated by a well-defined stop. Fairly square finish to muzzle, that also showed good depth. Excellent chiselling below dark brown and bright, oval eye. This was trimmed by lovely dark pigmentation that accentuated his features. Prominence to occipital protuberance made for an easy transition into a muscular, long, lean neck. Excellent lay and length to scapular and straight forearms. Required width and depth seen to chest. Well sprung ribs and short coupled. Muscular loin and width to croup. Width to upper thigh. Well-padded feet. On the move, showed width on the up and back. Correct footfall on the around.

3. 180 – Smith’s BOURNEHOUSE SECRET SUNSET OF MEADOWRUSH.

Class 202 – Open (2,0)

1. 179 - Forrest’s ELVISTAR PRIVATE DANCER – 2.5-year-old bitch, litter mate to my 2nd in Postgraduate and another from this owner who had a really lovely head and expression. Canvased adorned with a fuller coat of blue belton, this girl was eye catching in the class and quite well off for type. She carried a lot of the same qualities as that of her kin, but in female form. Feminine, soft, soulful expression, with lovely rise to brows. These were enhanced by not overly pronounced stop and super workings below eye. A lovely finish to foreface, and balance to head proportions/ratios. Good width to skull and of correct shape from ear to ear. Head was very much in proportion to rest of construction, which meant the transition from limb to limb was quite seamless. This was evident in the flow from skull through, a rather long neck, that was well off for muscle on a bitch, to the well laid shoulders. Front and aft angulation very much in keeping with one-another. Elbows held close to thoracic cavity that reached elbows. Moderate spring to ribs. Super in topline in the stack, which also was evident on the move. Good in width over croup and its angulation. As for most dogs of this breed needs a little time to mature and develop second thigh width, which I am sure will come. Although I strongly believe that the ring was not conducive to this girl’s movement, she still showed plenty of reach on the around, and width to rear on the up and back. Super happy to be with handler and this did not faulter when going over her either.

2. 181 – Smith’s LARA FROM VALJEVO GREEN FIELDS OF MEADOWRUSH INT JCH (IMP SRB) – 3-year-old bitch. Very different in type to my winner. Stood in a tri-coloured coat. Although more compact than the other charges on show, she was still robust in frame and head composition. Strong in female head proportions; with depth to muzzle, proportions of muzzle to cranium equal, prominence to stop and occipital protuberance. Plenty of width to skull. Wide in dark nostrils. Darkest of brown eye. Very muscular in neck that showed good transition with obliquely set shoulders and straight forearms. Extremely well off for bone and good muscle throughout. Very well sprung ribs. Strong over loin. Width seen to rear construction. Well off for croup angulation and width, providing good placement for tail, which she carried well. Good bend at stifle and short hocks. Level in topline that did not waver on the move. Showed good drive on the around. Couldn’t do any more for her handler and really seemed to enjoy her time in the ring.

BOB - 176 - Danks-Kemish, Littlechild and Littlechild’s RAVENSETT JUST AN ILLUSION WITH ALOLFRANA (from Post graduate)

BP - 178 – Forrest’s ELVISTAR FALLING IN LOVE (from puppy)

Retriever (Golden)

Personally thought there were several dogs in this breed that would do well on any day, putting up stern competition for one-another and other competitors.

Class 231 – Puppy (3,1)

Very much liked both exhibits in this class.

1. 218 – Taylor and Tenn’s STRETTONHILL HOITY TOITY – 9-month bitch shown in a pale cream coat, that was very flat indeed and presented beautifully. Very much showing the biddable characteristics as she did everything asked of her. Feminine in appearance both in head refinement and body construction. Showing balance throughout. Breadth seen to skull, with equal proportion in length to that of the strong muzzle. Loved her head planes. Super soft expression coming from darkest brown eye, set well apart on definitive stop. Dark rims in keeping with exposed pigment throughout. Lovely amount of workings under eye. All without being over-done. Ears set on level with eye and ever so neatly. A rounded finish to cranium helped ease the shift to the body, with it being set cleanly into a muscular, yet graceful neck of proportional length. Well laid shoulders of correct angulation and good proportions. Down at elbow and super width to front that filled hand well. Excellent spring to rib for one so young. Good in topline, with length and width to croup. Rear angulation very sound with width also present to upper and second thigh. Excellent in feet. Still much a puppy and will need little time to mature, but at 9 months, there is no rush what so ever. Moved the best in the class, showing good drive from rear and reach. Should go far. BP.

2. 210 – Forrest’s ORLAGOLD MAJOR TOM – 9-month dog that I liked quite a lot. Presented in light coloured coat, with a little wave that was quite appealing. Strong male head, that was very much in balance with rest of the charge. Really lovely expression, coming from a super dark eye, set well wide on skull, with beautiful dark pigmented trim that was matched in the large wide nose. Pronunciation to stop without being overdone. Lovely head planes of equal proportions. Width seen to skull. Correct in moderately sized ear placement, that hung neatly next to head, and pointed to the muscular neck of proportionate length. Excellent transition into an unmistakably male body. Well boned throughout. Well angled front construction, that was strong and powerful. Long in shoulder blade. Forelegs placed well under body. Sprung ribs that were down at elbow. Strength to loin, width to croup. Excellent width to upper and second thigh. Hocks straight, giving a dominant appearance in the free stack, even for a 9-month. Pushed into second as didn’t quite move as well as that of first. A little close on the day, which went against some of his construction, suggesting the ring could have had a part to play. Would very much like to see move outside. Unlucky to come up against that of first. Another good youngster in the making.

Class 232 – Junior (3,0)

1. 212 – Marshall’s CADWST SPRING RIVER – 14-month dog that was instantly eye catching and a dog of presence. Beautifully presented in light golden coat. Everything was balanced and in proportion in this young man, from his head to his tail. Adorable expression, that he used along with his gentle, yet happy disposition, to his advantage. Almost like a cheat code. Good in dentition from a strong muzzle, rising with a good stop. Plenty of breadth to skull, with well positioned dark eye, with eye liner black pigmentation to the border. Lovely workings to zygomatic arch. Although slightly more refined in cranial to muzzle proportions, these were in ratio and in keeping with the rest of this example. Moderately sized ears, set in line with eyes, that hung neatly next to neck that was well muscled, clean and showing lovely reach. This flowed effortlessly into well laid shoulders, that was the tip of well-constructed forequarters. correct angulation and proportions to scapular and humerus. Closely fitting elbows were also apparent yet allowed for good width to chest and prominence to prosternum. Lovely spring to ribs that were down at elbow. Short coupled, with excellent strength to loin, which was obvious from his lovely topline, that did not waver. Gentle slope to wide croup, giving rise to a well-positioned tail, which he also carried well. Eye catching width to rear quarters that had a lovely, rounded shape. Width to upper thigh. Balanced, correct rear angulation. Cat like feet. Moved the best out of all the exhibits. Showed excellent drive from rear and reached out from front on the around. Width seen to front and rear on the up and back, without being overly so. Also shortlisted in the group. BOB.

2. 218 – Taylor and Tenn’s STRETTONHILL HOITY TOITY (please see critique for 1st in puppy)

3. 210 – Forrest’s ORLAGOLD MAJOR TOM.

Class 233 – Post Graduate (2,0)

1. 212 – Marshall’s CADWST SPRING RIVER (please see critique for 1st in Junior)

2. 216 – Riley’s WYLLOH PADDINGTON BEAR JW – 18-month dog that was presented well in light cream coat and providing a good basis for his balanced profile. Very typie in head proportions with good planes and proportions from skull to foreface. Correct in scissor bite, with trimmings of black pigmentation to lips and wide nose. This was also seen in eye trim that surrounded the darkest of brown medium sized eye, sitting well apart, straddling a stop of good prominence. Nice amount of workings below eye, without being overly done. Cranium well set on a muscular neck. The switch to thoracic region was smooth, with a well laid back, long scapular present. Tightly fitting elbows were well placed under a strong spring of ribs. A touch longer in cast than I am used to, however, had a super topline that did not waver on the move, showing strength to loin. Good shape and width to croup was also visible, providing the foundations for correct tail placement and carriage. Excelled in rear with width to upper and second thigh of lovely shape. Correct in rear angulation that was in balance with front. Nice short hocks and lovely, neat feet. Drove out well from behind on the around. Width behind was also visible on the up and back.

Class 234 – Open (2,1)

1. 214 – Millington’s GOLMAS GUARD OF HONOUR AT JARABEES JW – dog of nearly 4-years of age, which I really liked, straight from the off. A rich, mid golden colour to fuller coat of beautiful texture. Presented beautifully and handled so well. Well boned all over and imposing in the stack, that made him look all dog. Solid. Yet again, another with a lovely expression. A very inquisitive eyebrow helped facilitate this and made you look into those deepest of dark eyes, of lovely shape, size and black trimmings. Strong in male head, showing breadth. Muzzle strong and deep. Ears well placed, set on with eyes framing the cranial features well. Strong in medium neck that flowed well into strongest of shoulders. Excellent front angulation with length to shoulder blade. Good in upper arm length, with straight forelegs. Good width to chest and down at elbow. Well sprung ribs, showing short, firm loin. Well off for length of croup. Lovely width to upper and second thigh. Would personally have liked a touch more bend to stifle, to really push him on. Moved well on the up and back showing good width to front and rear. Good reach to front. Put up a good fight for the contention of best of breed. A lovely boy.

BOB - 212 – Marshall’s CADWST SPRING RIVER (from Junior and Post Graduate)

BP - 218 – Taylor and Tenn’s STRETTONHILL HOITY TOITY (from Puppy)

Retriever (Labrador)

Absolutely loved judging this group of Labs. So many showing fantastic characteristics and temperament, in keeping with the breed. Although a little disappointed with the absences with the latter classes, I was more than happy with the exhibits on show and my winners.

Class 235 – Puppy (2,0)

Not much to choose between the representatives in this class.

1. 232 - Young’s FOURJAYS SASSY SAID IT ALL – 11-month Bitch in a black coat, that had a lot to like. Her lovely balance was obvious as soon as I saw her. Well off in head construction. Quite refined for a young bitch. Lovely planes adorned a broad cranium showing width, with nice finish to back of skull. Strength to jaws of good dentition. Super workings around eye, of medium size and darkest of dark colouration, showing no haw. Good width was seen between these also, which are well set on prominent stop, providing that great expression. Ratio of muzzle to cranium very appealing. Balance of ear size to head also as to be expected. Excellent reach to neck, in proportion to rest of construction. Easy flow into lovely front formation. Well laid shoulders, equality between scapular and upper arm of excellent angulation. Strong in bone seen throughout, which was also evident in straight forelegs. Neat in feet. Prominence to prosternum, indicating her sound front angulation and proportions, with width to forechest. Chest down at elbow, with super spring to ribs. Strong over wide loin and short coupled. Gentle slope, to yet again, wide croup. Really great in rear width with excellent upper and second thigh, set on correct rear angulation. All in keeping with each other. Overall balance. Correct in tail carriage and type. On the move, was excellent. Width where needed, good reach from front and drive from behind on the around. True in footfall. A really good prospect that needs a future watch. Good luck. BP

2. 230 – Percival’s FOURJAYS HOLD UP A LIGHT – 11-month bitch that was litter mate to 1st. Again, presented in black, with several of the similar qualities, to that of her litter mate and in expression, like for like. In the stack the differentiating feature is that she is a little more stout and solid. Although a strong head, still very much feminine and in keeping with the breed requirement. Nice and broad without being overly so. Soft and caring expression coming from medium sized, darkest of brown eye, that also showed intelligence. Well off for balance to head and muzzle proportions. Correct in dentition. Lovely ear positioning, size and hang. All making for a pretty picture. Very strong in neck of moderate length that held head well and set in to shoulders cleanly. Certainly, had a presence from her shoulders back to hindquarters, showing good lay back and of angulation correct for breed. Good in balance between scapular and forearm length. Upright in forelegs, that tucked under well. Decent width to chest that was down at elbow. Really well sprung ribs giving that characteristic barrel shape. Strength to loin and width to croup. Nice angulation to rear construction, stemming from pin bones, and all the way through to turn at stifles and strong, short hocks. On the move, a little methodical that pushed her down into second. On the around she still showed the reach I expected from her construction. On the back showed good action to front. Very much sure that she will come on well.

Class 236 – Junior (4,0)

1. 223 – Jones’s SERENGOCH’S CALISTOGA JW – 16-month bitch presented in a beautiful, rich chocolate coat. Well put together for one of 16-months, with only a few little places that will come together as she matures. A lot just seemed right. She painted a pretty picture in the stack, with balance to be seen throughout. Clean in finish to foreface that started with a large nose that melded into the colour of the coat. Lovely workings under an eye of dark hazel. These were well positioned into skull on the ridge of a stop that had good, correct rise. Shape and positioning of brows helped increase the desirable expression. These all were placed on a broad skull, that had medium sized ears used well to frame the package. Cranium well positioned on a neck of very pleasing reach, yet muscular and powerful. One that had free flow from neck to well angulated and laid shoulders. Straight in forelegs and correct depth to chest. Level in topline that helped show over her spring to ribs. Short coupled and showing width over her back. Lovely chunky width to thighs that really showed her balance. Angulation complementary with fore. Well-muscled throughout without being overweight. Moved very well showing characteristic gait and action to forequarters. Correct in footfall and plenty of drive from those thighs on the around. Reached out well also. One that I considered for top honours. Best of luck with her future.

2. 230 - Percival’s FOURJAYS HOLD UP A LIGHT (please see critique for 2nd in Puppy)

3. 231 – Young’s FOURJAYS COMETS CARNIVAL.

Class 237 – Post Graduate (6,4)

1. 224 – Jones’s SERENGOCH’S KNOCKIN BOOTS – just over 2-year-old bitch that was very much eye catching as soon as entered the ring for her overall type and balance. Super impressive in the stack. Very much in keeping with what I was looking for in this breed. Presented in a rich, chocolate coat. Everything was in balance with this girl. Loved the breadth to skull that retained its ratio to muzzle. Lovely rise to stop that only helped accentuate those skull proportions. Length to strong jaws in keeping with skull. Nose wide with pigmentation in keeping with coat. Super expressive in medium sized, dark, dark eyes that were endless pool like in appearance and full of pathos that were so appealing. The workings added to this, also. Ears of medium length, set well back into skull, and hung close to head and framed it. All set very well into strong and powerful neck that was free from throatiness. Easy transition into thoracic area was clear for all to see, with super lay back of shoulders. Loved her front construction revealing correct proportions of upper arm to shoulder, as well as front angulation. Straight from elbow to ground and placed well under body. Width seen to front and correct prominence to prosternum that all fitted the hand so well. Well-sprung barrel ribs that were down at elbow, that provided a good bed for the strong, wide loin and therefore, level topline. This was similarly seen in the croup where the width and angulation were more than pleasing to see. Again, setting the foundations for correct, thick at root tail set and carriage. The hindquarters did not let her down as the angulation was very much in keeping with the fore, and had excellent, in proportion, width. Moved easily with purpose and drive, showing plenty of width where needed. Covered the ground effortlessly on the around and showed no sign of plaiting on the up and back. Nothing was over done on this girl and so, so much to like. Although in a numerically high breed, I can see her doing particularly well, especially as she is so young. BOB.

2. 233 – Young’s HUNTRESS HAPPY KISS AT FOURJAYS JCH (IMP UKR) – a bitch that is a little over 2 years of age that was similar in type to my winner, and so presented quite a nice outline. Coat of yellow with a slight golden sheen that was in top condition, really caught the eye. Breadth seen to skull, with good gentle definition to stop. Good width to black nose and correct in dentition. Super dark, correctly shaped eyes, with black pigmented trim. These were more than amply set on the skull which was framed by a little rise to eyebrow and workings undereye, to clean cheeks. Clean in finish to foreface. Ears tucked well to side of head. Excellent reach to muscular, clean neck. Correct front angulation to forequarters and straight from elbow to ground. Well boned and muscled throughout. Chest deep of appealing width, just down at elbow. Once again, well sprung, barrel ribs were there to see. Width also seen over croup. Of the rear quarters, personally would like to see a touch more width, to complete her balance. On the move, she went well with verve and showed decent width to front and behind on the up and back.

Class 238 – Open (5,4)

1. 220 – Cheers’s DENIANGILL CHOCO TRUFFLE - 16-month male of lovely chocolate coat. This dog was full of fun and so happy to be alive, although, sadly, very difficult to go over because of his exuberance, we got there in the end, but it was a joy to see one so happy. A little slighter than that which I am used to, but when settled, he had quite a lot of appealing features. Gorgeous, kind, and soft expression with dark hazel eye, set in a full male head. A nice broad skull, with definitive stop and lovely raised brows framing that lovely expression so well. Well off for balance to head and muzzle proportions with strength to jaws. Moderate sized ears hung very close to side of head and were made of lovely leather. Strong neck that flowed easily into well laid shoulders, straight in forelegs. Well-off for width to chest. Good in spring to ribs. Good in topline, showing loin strength and of some width. Rear angulation very much in keeping with front. On the move again a little tricky to see because of his happiness. However, when settled, he moved well showing good drive and reach. Loved his time with his handler and tail did not stop wagging throughout. Hopefully he will come together, but doesn’t lose his enthusiasm.

1. 235 – Brand’s COEDHELYG JINGLE ALL THE WAY – 4.5-year-old dog. Presented in a coat of darker orange that hit the standard brief of “moderate” in nearly every aspect. Very little between this and 2nd. He maintained that moderate look in the stack also, although, a slighter example to which I am accustomed. Very nice for male expression in darker amber, almond shaped eye. Ample amount of workings below eye. Clean in wedged shaped skull that also showed breadth. Moderate in appealing stop. Flat in cheek, with ears well set high and super alert, as to be expected of the breed. Good length to moderate neck, that showed proportionate strength. Correct in front angulation and forelegs straight. Spring seen to ribs and good strength to loin. Width to upper and second thigh. Used this well on the move where he won the class, where he exhibited good rear propulsion. Tail and head carriage fitting the requirement. Hint of white to tip of tail that lashed on the move. Very alert and in tune with handler. Eager to work. Just pipped this class and took BOB.

2. 234 – Adshead’s AFONBACH SYRAX JW – 3-year-old bitch that was presented beautifully in a full coat for female, in a moderately deep orange toned coat, and white splash to chest, which was very appealing. Quite a compact, slightly framed girl, yet showed plenty of tone to good muscle. Darkest of brown eye that was surrounded by lighter pigmentation/ flesh colour, in keeping with colour of well-developed nostril and coat. Feminine in head appearance. Well off for prominence to stop, in keeping with rest of head construction. Correct in head planes. Strong in neck, of appealing length that flowed well in to well angled shoulders. Elbows held close to thoracic cavity that showed a deep chest and spring to ribs. Strength to loin and width to croup of good angulation, thus allowing for well set on tail that reached to hock. Showed correct action on the move and held well at rest. Appealing width to upper thigh that was well toned. On the move showed good drive from rear. Personally, preferred the reach of 1st, pushing her to 2nd. However, this again could have been from ring size. Overall, an appealing package that could easily change positions on a different day.

Class 271 – Puppy (1,0)

1. 276 – Hawkins’s SCHONHUND SHOW AT THE OSCARS – 10-month dog that seemed very complete in construction for such a young age, in this breed. A coat of darker grey that is still quite pleasing. Stronger in frame. Definitely a male head, showing good proportions to length. Held regally, and showing good prominence to stop, without being overly so. Lovely working to zygomatic arch. Beautiful bright, keen eye, surrounded by pigment in keeping with coat and nasal epidermis. Clean in moderate neck, in balance with rest of his construction. Clean in transition to body. Strength seen to sinewy forelegs. Correct in body proportions of approximately 12:10. Ribs well sprung and down to elbow. Super in level topline that came from a strong loin. Slight slope to croup that had good width. Very good in rear angulation, with width across upper thigh. Tail carriage very good on the move and did reach hocks. Best mover of the exhibits today, although couldn’t show full potential, as a few strides meant him competing with the ring tape. Good width behind, on the up and back. Correct in footfall on the around, with good drive from rear. BOB and BP.

1. 277 - Hawkins’s SMILEK FERNANDO JW – nearly 7-year-old dog, presented in a darkened steely coat. Strong in cranial construction, making him definitely a dog. Well positioned amber eyes, of medium size, set on moderate stop, showing plenty of medial line. Excellent chiselling, which was very pleasing. Well-off for proportions of skull to muzzle lengths. Correct in ear placement and length, reaching close to tip of nose. Good prominence to occipital protrusion that flowed cleanly into quite long, and certainly clean neck that was muscular. Well set shoulders, placed neatly next to sprung ribs, of good depth. Good in width to strong loin and width over croup. Personally, would like this a touch longer. Decent in tuck up. Width to upper thigh, on a well angulated rear assembly. He held his topline well on the move, but the ring did him no favours. Very difficult to judge. This pushed him out of contention in the challenge. This boy showed a lot younger than his 7-years of age.
