Dorset County Canine Society – 20th July 2025

My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge at this friendly well run show and for the great hospitality throughout the day. Thank you to my two competent stewards, Carla and Sheila, who kept the lovely big ring and laughter flowing all day, despite the hot conditions. Such a pity that there was a Pointer Championship Show the same day but the typical outgoing temperaments and super presentation of my Flat Coated Retrievers sure made up for it!

Flat Coated Retrievers

J (2, 0) 1. Durrant’s Glenturret Wet My Whistle. This 15 month Dog presents a super outline, he is balanced and symmetrical and stands on well boned straight legs and correct feet. A lovely head in the making with good proportions, eye shape and expression. Super length and set of neck, lovely front angulation, he is deep through the chest with correct rib proportions. With a flowing topline and good tail set, he has strong rear quarters of good width, correct bend to his stifle and well muscled second thighs. He excelled in movement which was straight & true and his side gait showed balance, reach and extension. Beautifully animated both standing and on the move. BOB

2. Webb’s Kenleap Midnight Hudson. Puppy dog of 11 months who, as well as his handler, were at their first show. Upstanding boy with good substance and bone who stood four square showing a solid topline and a well set lashing tail. He has a well moulded masculine head, a strong jaw and correct scissor bite. From the front he is deep through the chest, tight in elbow and beautifully straight. His angles front and rear are balanced and when settled, he produced an even gait with lovely reach and extension. Quietly and carefully handled, this novice team has great potential, and I hope they continue to progress. BP

PG (3, 1) 1. Repeat 1st Junior 2. Smith’s Ruddleberry Dark Phoenix. 31/2 year old dog who stood four square, showing a balanced outline and a level topline run, over a short loin to the tip of tail. Lovely masculine moulded head with correct shaped dark eye. He shows a good forechest, a well laid shoulder and has correct spring and length of rib. Rear quarters are well developed showing a good width of thigh and a straight hock. Well presented in profuse coat, his movement was straight and true but lacked a little enthusiasm to produce a full free flowing gait. A sound and happy boy, just carrying too much weight for me today.

O (2, 1) 1. Legg’s Ruddleberry Phoenix Song. Litter sister to PG winner, very similar in construction and outline but oh so feminine. She has a balanced outline, true to type and has a lovely feminine head and expression, a dark eye and good ear set. She shows a correctly placed neck of good length, a well laid shoulder and stands on legs of good bone, with well rounded, close feet. Short coupled like her brother, she has well developed quarters showing moderate bend to stifle and a good width of thigh. She is straight and true in her movement, but I felt today that her lack of muscle tone did not produce the free flowing gait I was looking for. Nevertheless a lovely girl.
