South West Scotland Gundog Association

Breed: Retriever (Labrador)

South West Scotland Gundog Association – Sunday 23rd November 2025

Retriever (Labrador)

I would like to thank South West Scotland Gundog Association for the invitation to judge Labradors at their open show and for the exhibitors for graciously accepting placements.

Puppy (3, 2 abs)

1st – Lewis’s Crammondkirk Made You Look

6-month-old chocolate bitch at her first show. A truly lovely puppy – typical head with no exaggeration. Smart and gentle expression that was enhanced by her correct eye colour and shape. Correct bite. She was presented in clean condition and in good coat with a well clothed otter tail. Well-constructed overall with good angulation fore and aft, with a good length of neck and well-set shoulders. Well sprung ribs for her age, and appropriate length of loin to compliment. Plenty of bone with neat, well-padded feet. She presented a neat picture in profile with clean lines. A little unsettled on the move today, but when she found her feet, she moved cleanly and covered the ground well. Although a raw puppy, she caught the eye and I will follow her career with interest. Was disappointed that she was not brought into challenge.

Junior (2, 2 abs)

Graduate (4, 2abs)

1st – Lewis’s Deer’s Den Night Sky at Crammondkirk

Almost 12 months old black dog. This boy is well up to size and does not need to get any taller but will benefit from maturity to help level him out as he was a touch bum high on the day. Presented in good coat with a well wrapped tail, well-muscled and in overall excellent condition as is typical from this kennel. Correct scissor bite, good eye colour and shape and good ear placement on a masculine head. Powerful mover, covering the ring with ease but movement could tighten up, which will come with age. Neat feet and sufficient bone and correct angulation fore and aft. Well sprung ribs. Would prefer slightly more length of neck.

BOB and BP in the absence of the Puppy Class Winner

2nd – Foster’s Rochevale Beal JW

2 Year old yellow dog. Another dog in full coat and in well-muscled condition. Masculine head – broad in skull but still displaying a gentle, intelligent expression with correct eye shape and colour. Strong topline, well sprung ribs and complimentary length of loin. Correct tail set, although tail carriage both in profile and on the move was higher than ideal and impacted on his overall profile. Ok Feet. Good rear angulation, but I felt he was lacking slightly in upper arm.

Moved with sufficiently powerful stride, covering ground but did not move as cleanly as 1st.

Post Graduate (2, 1 abs)

1st – Pollock’s Pollham Bracara

2 Year old Yellow bitch of a good size. Presented in hard muscled condition. Dropping her coat on this occasion. Feminine head, defined stop and good eye colour and shape. Strong black pigment and wide nostrils but felt her muzzle was slightly narrow in comparison to her skull. Strong neck and lovely level topline with a well-set tail, carried straight off her back and never stopped wagging. Well sprung ribs and short coupled. Well boned with neat feet. Correct rear angulation, would have preferred more upper arm in front.

Limit (3, 1 abs)

1st – Pollock’s Pollham Jump For Joy

3-Year-old Yellow bitch. As per her kennel mate in the previous class, she was also in hard muscled condition but also dropping her coat. Slightly smaller than her kennel mate. Pretty, feminine head with a gentle expression – good eye colour and ear placement. Neat, compact feet. Good angulation both fore and aft with sufficient bone and substance for a bitch. Well sprung ribs and short coupled. Would have preferred slightly more length of neck. Decent mover covered sufficient ground with minimal effort. Held her topline well in profile and on the move.

2nd – Drummond’s Passion Of My Life Kimani With Drumonagh

2.5-Year-old Chocolate dog. This boy was very full of himself today and was giving his handler a hard time. Unfortunately, this meant he was difficult to asses both hands on and on the move. He moved with powerful strides and covered sufficient ground but movement was not as neat as desired. He had a tendency to carry his tail higher than ideal which detracted from overall outline.
