Larkhall & District Canine Club

Breed: Junior Handling

I would like to start by thanking the officers and committee for inviting me to judge the junior handling classes. Having competed in junior handling myself when I was younger, I know exactly what it’s like to be in the ring and what to look for.

I was extremely impressed with the standard of handling on display. Every competitor remembered the golden rule of not going between the dog and the judge, which made my decisions all the more difficult! The presentation, confidence, and great sportsmanship shown by these young handlers were a credit to them.

They are a true asset to the future of our sport and should be encouraged and supported at every opportunity. For me, it was an absolute pleasure and I thoroughly enjoyed judging these classes.

Junior Handling 6-11 years (7,3ab)

1st and Best Junior Handler Arlo Barbi with his Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund. This was a confident young handler who showed excellent awareness and ring presence throughout the class. He remained attentive the entire time, watching my every move and responding quickly to any changes I made, including when I switched places—he repositioned the dog with ease and control. The dog’s bite was presented clearly and confidently, and all my questions were answered accurately and without hesitation. This handler demonstrated both skill and composure beyond his years. A very promising talent with a bright future ahead in the handling ring.

2nd Evie Bryson with her Scottish Terrier. Another very confident handler who came very close to winning this class. With a little more attention to tidying up pattern work, she will be a real force in the ring. Presented the bite well, answered all questions with ease, and maintained excellent focus on me throughout. Moved around the dog smoothly and with confidence—lots of potential here!

3rd Daphne Bryson with her Newfoundland.

4th Belle McMillian with her Shih tzu

Junior Handling 12-16 years (4,2ab)

1st and Reserve Best Junior Handler Jessica Reekie with her French Bulldog. This handler showed her dog very well and paid close attention to my every move. When asked for a reverse triangle, she responded without hesitation and executed it confidently. Her pattern work was tight, and she moved as one with her dog, showing great teamwork. Another confident handler with lots of promise. With a bit more work on answering questions with confidence and improving the presentation of the teeth, she’ll continue to progress strongly.

2nd Bethany White with her Gordon Setter. A newer handler who seemed a little nervous, but worked hard to manage her larger, more challenging dog. She showed the teeth well and took her time on the move to try and produce a good pattern. With more experience and confidence, I have no doubt she’ll develop into a great handler.
