German Shepherd Dog

I was presented with some different types in this breed, which were interesting to go over and watch the movement of. My decisions were based on temperament and whether I could see the dogs doing what they were bred to do, for which, movement MUST be sound. I was disappointed that the more Germanic exhibits were very loose in their rear movement.

Puppy (2,0) 1st FURY LAUKINE VILKAUOGE (Kundrotaite, Miss K). 6 and a half month sable bitch. Very raw, but a lot to like about her. Nice head, very alert to her surroundings. Good proportions and well used ears with lively eyes. Nice angulation front and rear. Good topline. Nice length to tail. Moved with drive and had lovely side gait, but rear was a little loose. Dog and handler would benefit from some ringcraft training as I understand this was only their second time at a show. BP

2nd JEZEBI JEZ (Commins, Mrs J and Mr T) 8 month old bitch who was a little unsettled in the ring but vey attentive to her handler. Lovely shape to her head, alert to her surroundings, with eyes and ears noticing everything. Broad skull. Nice length to neck and a long tail. Stood roached backed, but this was likely due to her being unsettled, as her topline flattened somewhat on the move, which was ok but would have liked a bit more reach and drive.

Junior (2,0) 1st DROYALES ONE AND ONLY AT SHADOWSHACK (Milham, Mrs P) Bitch with nice feminine head, with broad skull. Would prefer a little more length to her muzzle. Intelligent expression. Nice length of neck. Felt she was a little short in upper arm. Gently sloping topline and good long tail. Movement wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked but had better drive and strength than 2nd. 2nd LIEPSNA’S ALESSA (Kundrotaite, Miss K) Bitch who was “on one” today and gave her handler a tough time. Very attentive to her surroundings. Lovely shape to head with alert eyes and ears. A little short in neck but leading to a sloping topline. Felt her front angulation was a little upright, and at the rear I would have preferred shorter hocks. Lovely long tail. On the move, although she moved with good momentum, her hind quarters were not firm, with weak hocks showing a distinct wobbling when viewed from the rear. 

Limit (3,0) 1st KONATIAN BAGGY TROUSERS (Chapman, Mr D) Darker coloured dog with a longer coat. Slightly fine head but still masculine. Good proportions with broad enough skull and well used ears. Calm and intelligent expression. Slightly long in body but held his topline well on the move. Good angulation front and rear, not overstretched, correct length to both upper and lower legs and well muscled. Good tail. Moved with drive and one I could see doing a day’s work. BOB

2nd DORA UGNINIS VILKAS (Doherty, Mrs G) Younger bitch. Nice head with good ears and correct eyes and alert expression. Good length of neck. A little upright in the front and would prefer the upper arm a little longer. Nicely sloping topline and good length of tail. Had reasonable reach from the front but the rear movement showed weakness in the hocks, which tended to bow inwards with each stride (cow hocked).
