Evesham & District Canine Society Premier Open Show – 13/07/2025
Thank you to the officers and committee of Evesham & District Canine Society for the invitation to judge Golden & Labrador Retrievers at their Premier Open Show. Many thanks to the exhibitors for the opportunity to assess their dogs. It was a quality entry though there was a high number of absentees probably due to the weather forecast for wall-to-wall sun and temperature more than 30 degrees. However, on the day we were lucky to benefit from an early start, a gentle breeze and plenty of shade adjacent to the ring. Thank you to stewards Celia & Margaret for ensuring the smooth running of the ring. No dentition issues were observed and temperament appeared good in all exhibits as expected.
Golden Retrievers PD (3, 1) 1. Birkin-Green & Gripton’s LOUELLABROOK ATLANTIC STAR WITH SANSUE. Almost 8 months this quality youngster is very eye catching with his super balanced outline; well up for size so will no doubt take time to fill his frame. He has a well-proportioned masculine head with kind dark eyes, jet black pigment and an alert and happy expression. Good length of clean neck flows into a good layback of shoulders and strong level topline with tail straight off the back and held level on the move. His movement was straight and true coming and going and impressively steady for a youngster. Expertly handled accentuating his qualities and shown in attractive blond coat. BP and pleased to award him RBOB. 2. Henson & Luckham’s FLYNGALEE HUNKY DORY 11 months puppy I have judged previously and who has many virtues. A smaller boy than 1, he presents a nice compact and balanced outline standing foursquare. He has an attractive masculine head with gentle expression, dark pigment and kind dark eye. Strong bone and stands on well padded cat-like feet. Good width and depth to forechest, well sprung ribs; he has decent angles fore and aft. His movement let him down today with a lack of rear drive and would prefer a slightly more rounded croup. Shown in well presented full mid gold coat and sympathetically handled. SYD (4,1) 1.Taylor & Teague’s TREWATER WATSON AT GOLDREALM. 14 months eye-catching youngster I judged previously as a puppy. He has a well-proportioned masculine head free from coarseness and an alert expression, coal black pigment and kind dark eye. A good reach of neck flows into well laid shoulders and matching return of upper arm placing forelegs well under body and elbows close fitting to ribs. Strong level topline and good tailset with well angulated quarters, he presents a picture of balance when standing. Moved out maintaining a level topline and tail carriage producing good profile movement, but he can become uncoordinated at times affecting his rear footfall and just needs time to tighten up and fill his frame. Attentive to handler and presented in full blond coat. I believe this win gave him the final point for his Junior Warrant – congratulations! 2. Winsor-Williams & Williams’s AURGENTIOUS MENA DHU. Another I have judged previously and was impressed with. Now 15 months and a smaller more compact package than 1, he is full of breed type. Very nice masculine head which is shorter in muzzle and with dark pigment. Well angulated fore and aft. Strongly boned and standing on well padded cat-like feet. Moved well with correct footfall maintaining level topline but tail carriage a tad high today. Feel he is lacking some of his previous sparkle, going through the ‘junior stage’ at the moment, just needs time to fill out and grow a new coat to regain this. Preferred the profile movement and overall finish of 1 today. Handled well. 3. Henson & Luckham’s FLYNGALEE HUNKY DORY. LD (4, 2) 1.Taylor & Teague TREWATER WATSON AT GOLDREALM 2. Winsor-Williams & Williams’s AURGENTIOUS DEAROV IM. Litter brother to 2nd in Yearling and very similar in type so many of the same remarks apply including his outline and general proportions. His head is especially attractive with super pigment and kind dark eyes. He is in hard condition but as with his litter brother feel he has hit the ‘junior stage’ and needs time to fill out. He moved out steadily but his profile movement was spoilt by high tail carriage and to be critical would have liked him to move a touch wider behind. Patience is a virtue and sure he will shine again. OD (3, 2) 1. Taylor & Teague’s TREWATER WATSON AT GOLDREALM. PB (2, 2). SYB (5, 3) 1.Winsor-Williams & Williams’s AURGENTIOUS ROS AN GWEL Full of breed type and litter sister to the dogs placed 2nd in SYD & LD I have judged this bitch previously and appreciated her qualities. She continues to impress with her unexaggerated proportions. Attractive feminine head with dark points and sweet expression. Good forehand assembly with plenty of forechest, level topline and good width to well-muscled quarters. Good bone and tight feet but not overdone in any way. Elbows close fitting to ribs of good length and depth. Steady mover holding level topline and tail carriage straight off the back, perhaps a tad close behind going away but straight and true in front. Shown in full golden coat and at one with handler. 2. Manning’s FULVIA BEATRICE. 23 months bitch handled by her novice owner and of different type to 1. Not the overall substance of the winner but nevertheless has virtues that with more practice could be shown to advantage. She has an unmistakably feminine head and a sweet eager to please expression. Kind dark eye and good pigment. No exaggerations with moderate angulation front and rear. Happy disposition and wagging tail - with more training could be a good freestanding show girl. Sadly, didn’t give of her best on the move with poor head carriage spoiling her profile movement. She does have a good tailset and carriage. Shown in mid gold full coat of good texture. LB (4 , 4). OB (5, 4) 1. Winsor-Williams & Williams’s FLEUR SO SWEET AT AURGENTIOUS. Standing alone in this class but worthy of her 1st place, 4 year old mature bitch who impressed me when I judged her previously. Despite the heat she was on top form today. Presenting a pleasing balanced outline and with each component flowing into the next with well angulated front and rear quarters. Well up for size but in proportion and so feminine from nose to tail. Lovely head with soft expression and dark points. Quality bone and well padded cat-like feet. Level topline and correct tailset, she moved on an economical stride with accurate footfall and at one with her handler. Shown in mid gold well prepared coat. In the challenge stood out as the clear winner with her effortless freeflowing movement maintaining her topline and level tail carriage. Pleased to award her BOB.
Labrador Retrievers. My first time judging Labradors. Special thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs – not a big entry but I was delighted with the quality of the exhibits today. No dentition issues and no overweight exhibits. Temperament appeared excellent in all. P (1, 0) Mills’s JAYBEC WINTER YULE. Standing alone in this class and just 6 months old this very promising yellow (cream) dog puppy was worthy of his first place. Well proportioned head has of course yet to fully develop, good pigment and kind dark eyes. Loved his happy expression, focussing on his handler and giving his all. Forelegs straight and standing on tight compact feet. Good amount of forechest for a youngster and compact body proportions with moderate angulation front and back. Level topline, ribbing of correct length and short in the couplings with decent tailset. Tail thickly coated. Short dense coat of good texture. Moved straight and true coming and going with tail carried slightly gaily but without curl. Well handled. BP & PG4. SY (2,0) 1. Richards’s ROCHBY ALFIE. 13 months black dog who presents a well-proportioned balanced outline, full of breed type. Lovely masculine head free from coarseness, broad in skull and strong wide muzzle. Intelligent expression with dark brown eye. Very attentive to handler. Good length of leg. Has the barrel shaped ribs called for, short coupled with level topline. Thickly coated ‘otter’ tail, of correct length and well set on. Correct double coat. Good bone, feet tight and well padded. Moved out well straight and true coming and going, holding topline with good tail carriage and attentive to handler. A very nice example of the breed. RBOB. 2. Nightingale’s FLYENPYG EMILY GRUNT. Black bitch of 18 months who was unlucky to meet 1 today. Another nice example of the breed. She has a feminine head, well defined stop with strength in muzzle and kind dark eye. Nicely proportioned body to leg length presenting a balanced outline. Carrying the right amount of weight. – well sprung ribs and short in the couplings. Moderate angulation front and back. Correct double coat and thickly coated tail of correct length carried level on the move. A little distracted but moved steadily; just preferred the rear movement of 1. Patiently handled. L (2, 1) 1. Davis’s ROCHEVALE PALM READER JW 3 year old black bitch who, for me, ticks all the boxes for breed type. She showed her socks off despite the high temperature. Well proportioned body to leg length presenting a picture of balance with unexaggerated but nicely angulated fore and hindquarters; looked a picture standing foursquare with wagging tail and so attentive to her able handler. Feminine head with alert intelligent expression. Dark brown almond shaped eyes and small ears set well back. Good width of forechest, straight forelegs and standing on round well padded feet. Well sprung barrel ribs, short coupled strong loin and ‘otter‘ tail straight off the back. Correct double coat. Moved steadily holding her topline and tail carriage level. A very nice bitch; pleased to award her BOB. O (1,0) 1. Mills’s JAYBEC WINTER WISPA JW. 4 year old yellow (cream) bitch. Standing alone in this class but again a worthy 1st place winner being another quality exhibit exuding lots of breed type. I note she is the mother of the puppy and can see the resemblance. Of correct size and nicely angulated fore and aft. Feminine clean cut head with well defined stop and strength in muzzle. Eyes brown and almond shaped, pigment OK and some tear staining present but loved her obvious willingness to please, kind expression and attentiveness to handler. Well sprung barrel ribs, short coupled with strong topline and good tailset. Carrying the right amount of weight and in good double coat; impressive following her recent litter. Correct ‘otter’ tail. Moved steadily holding a level topline; a tad close behind to be critical. Very well handled.
