HARROGATE AND DISTRICT CANINE SOCIETY OPEN SHOW 3/8/25
Thank you to the hard-working committee, for inviting me to judge at their friendly open show. What started out as a very wet morning turned into glorious sunshine. Thank you to my very efficient stewards on the day.
FRENCH BULLDOG
Class 335 Puppy (2 entries)
What a lovely class to start my day ,2 glorious, pied litter mates.
1st Westmorlands Aldhammills Lucie Locket - very sound feminine bitch puppy and far more advanced at this stage of development than her brother. Loved her expression and ear set, , dark eye, good strong underjaw with turn up. Powerful well arched neck leading onto a cobby muscular body. Moved out so free and sound in such atrocious weather conditions BOB and BP. Pleased to see she also won the utility puppy group
2nd Hutchinsons Aldhammills checkmate for Oschalben litter brother to first with many similar qualities. He has strong bone and well knuckled feet. A quality male who just needs time.
Class 336 Junior (3 entries 2 ab)
1st Westmorland and Hutchinsons Oschalben Ophelia 11-month-old cobby fawn bitch. Loved her for size and substance and a real showgirl. Wonderful bat ears wide at base used well even in the rain couldn’t match her kennel mate on the move today, but a close call.
Class 337 post grad (2 entries 1 ab)
1st Westmorlands Gailbulls its Edith 18 month pied bitch who was hating the weather conditions and who can blame her. Standing and on the move her topline looked exaggerated but this could have been due to weather conditions, lovely muscular hind quarters which she used well on the move.
Class 338 Open (1 entry)
1ST Westmorlands Ravenside Indian summer at Gailbulls 6-year-old brindle in super condition liked her free-flowing movement and her strong back with gentle rise over her loins. Another who was not showing off her virtues due to the rain, but a very balanced, quality bitch
JAPANESE SHIBA INU
Class 339 Puppy (4 entries 1 ab)
1st Mothersdales Amivikes Baby Blue 8-month-old bitch puppy with an exquisite head. So feminine and her cheeks were well developed. Tight lips and black nose. Dark almond shaped eyes obliquely set. Medium neck with good arch leading to moderately sloping shoulders. Good spring of rib and deep chest. Her hindquarters were full of muscle, allowing her to move with a light energetic gait. Really liked this puppy and was considered for top honours BP
2ND Burwins Becalm Blue 11-month-old male puppy who was full of his own importance. Well balanced with correct front and rear angulation, another who moved well and was well presented. Just preferred 1st head at this stage of development but another quality puppy.
3rd Bryans Black Moonwaler Di Poggio Petroioi at Marilouvale
Class 340 Junior (2 entries)
1st Bryants Marilouvale can’t jinx me NAF - 6 months old black and tan bitch puppy headed this class nice for size. Ultra pretty head with correct eye would prefer more development of cheeks, but time is on her side. She was very sound and agile on the move with a lovely outline on the stack.
2nd Mothersdales Dundalks Spudalicious at Amivike - 16-month-old red sesame in fabulous coat condition, preferred her head to 1st felt she was carrying extra weight today which impeded her on the move.
Class 341 Post Grad (4 entries 1 ab)
1st Bryants Marilouvales break the bank - another stunning bitch headed this quality class. 13-month-old red sesame in great coat and body condition. Still has some maturing to do and this held her back today for further honours, but one I really liked. She had the best catlike feet with well knuckled toes and dark nails. High withers and level back, well sprung ribs. She has a broad flat skull, and her cheeks were well developed, but retained her femininity.
2nd Bryants Marilouvales Blank Cheque - black and tan litter sister to 1st and many of my comments also apply to her. I was splitting hairs in this class between 2 lovely bitches. She was slightly out of coat today, and at times stood a bit untidy in front
3rd Adey Burwen Blue Corvette at Echezeaux
Class 342 Open (5 entries)
1st Bryants Marilouvales Eddie Murphy – 2-year-old masculine, upstanding balanced red male who ticked all the boxes for me. Presented in rock hard condition with correct coat, soft dense undercoat and straight hard outer coat. Decent head with dark eyes of correct shape. Ears were small and inclining slightly forward. Perfect bite with strong jaws. Beautifully arched neck, elbows close to his body, carrying just enough weight, but feel he still has some maturing to do. His hocks were strong and parallel, tail set on high covered in slightly longer hair. Moved energetically BOB
2ND Rushfirths Hikays got my mind set on you -4-year-old bitch different type to 1st shorter in leg. Was being a real fidget, and gave her handler some work to do, but she settled enough to be awarded 2nd in this strong class. Very sound on the move but felt she was carrying extra weight today and her coat was softer than 1st
3rd Mothersdales Amivikes Cos I am special too
AFGHAN HOUNDS
Class 157 Puppy (1 entry)
1st Kidds Cloudside prince of light exuberant 10-month-old male puppy a real handful, handler did well to move him in a small ring. Well grown but needs time to fill his frame. Excellent coat for age, loved his oriental expression. His shoulders were long and sloping, level back with prominent hip bones moved with smooth springy gait. BOB and BP
BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN (PETIT)
What a delightful breed to judge all temperaments were excellent and made me smile with their zest for life.
Class 116 Junior ( 2 entries)
1st Fairhurst and Mcaulay Erylan Passiflore very pretty 15-month-old quality bitch,
head carried proudly. Her skull was of moderate length, prominent black nose, dark eyes giving intelligent expression. Just needs time to mature
2nd Fairhurst Erylan Fleur litter sister to first and yet not as forward in maturity. A real clown who enjoyed her day. Great topline and set on of tail which was carried correctly.
Class 167 Post Graduate (1 entry)
1st Fairhurst Valefell Savannah Journey 3-year-old male of good height felt he was a little long in back but super hind quarters which he used well on the move. Good ribbing would prefer a darker eye.
Class 168 Open ( 2 entries)
1st Bartleys Erylan Poseidon de la mer jw - wow what a stunning dog!! I have seen this classy male from the ring side many times, and I was excited to eventually have the opportunity of getting my hands on him. I was not disappointed, he is special, and he knows it. He has the most delightful expression with dark eyes and large protruding nose. His ears were folded and of correct length. Strong jaws with perfect scissor bite, his neck was long and well set onto laid back shoulders. Back of medium length and level topline. Deep chest with best sternum of the day. His hindquarters were strong and muscular allowing him to power round the ring with great drive. No hesitation on awarding him BOB, and later he could not be beaten, HOUND GROUP 1 and my eventual BEST IN SHOW!! I wish his owners well for his future career and will be watching with interest.
2nd Bartleys Erylan Loki Maitre du Mal vw 8 year old male in fabulous condition another sound dog from this kennel. Kind expression with dark eyes of correct shape. Moved so very well and belied his age.
IRISH WOLFHOUND
Class 194 Junior (2 entries 1 ab)
1st Mc Nulty Rixymanor Major - large upstanding male well grown and mature for 13 months. His head was long and carried high, skull not too broad. His eyes were dark with black eye lids and correct oval shape. Harsh coat and great feet.
Class 195 postgraduate (1 entry)
1st Mc NultyWyldwensley Kes jw – 2-year-old male with an excellent coat and movement. He coped very well in the small ring. His chest was very deep. Long back with arched loins. Another with lovely tight feet and well-muscled. BOB

1st Mc NultyWyldwensley Kes jw see above
RHODESIAN RIDGEBACKS
I always enjoy judging this breed, they have such quality in abundance and always presented in rock hard condition.
CLASS 197 Puppy (1 entry)
1st Mackfalls and Macintosh Africaner Zavanna Breeze - very well-balanced, quality puppy bitch of almost 12 months. Loved her head and close-fitting lips. Correct ridge and her chest is deep with moderately sprung ribs. Good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. She was free and active on the move but today was a little close behind which held her back from top honours BP AND PUPPY GROUP 2
Class 198 Junior (3 entries 1 ab)
1st Bates Gunthwaites Red hot Rose – well named bitch of 14months. Her outline on the stack was just stunning with a long, elegant neck leading to powerful laid-back shoulders. Preferred head lip and expression of the puppy winner, but on the move this bitch could not be denied BOB she was in A1 condition, and her coat was sleek and glossy. BOB and unlucky today in the group to come up against the super PBGV, close up and so was my HOUND GROUP 2.
2nd Hancocks Stasimelsie Ashwagandha -another quality young bitch, not the maturity as yet of 1st. Good ridge and powerful back with strong loins. Well defined muscle on the rear and her movement was free and active.
Class 199 postgraduate (3 entries 2 absent)
1st Hancocks Stasimelsie Mace delightful 6 and half year-old bitch who was mum to 2nd in junior. She has passed on many of her qualities to her daughter. One who really made me smile, she loved her time in the ring today moving out so freely. Fabulous condition and wish her well in her veteran career, which I’m sure she will enjoy to the full.
SALUKI
Class 204 postgraduate (1 entry)
1st Dugdales Gayledale Hurricane of Hera- 19 months old pretty bitch her head was long and narrow, with a moderately wide skull, long neck leading to well-muscled laid-back shoulders. Her movement was smooth and effortless.
Class 205 Open (2 entries)
1st Hamilton, Garratt and Oakey Caryna Oberon – Mature, masculine, graceful black and tan male, presented in fabulous condition. Dignified expression with far seeing eyes. His ears are long and mobile and well covered in long silky hair. Perfect bite, back fairly broad with slightly arched loin. A very impressive outline on this dog and moved with plenty of reach and drive, BOB
2nd Dugdales Gayledale Typhoon of Artemis litter sister to 1st in pg another pretty girl who could not match the male today on the move. She was sound but a tad apprehensive which was impeding her front movement. A quality bitch who just needs time to mature.
AVNSC HOUND
Class 209 Puppy (3 entries)
3 stunning babies in this class, hardest class of the day as I felt all 3 are future stars in their breeds.
1st Ardens Madika Shine on -6-month-old exquisite tri colour beagle bitch puppy who is already such an established show girl. Lovely for size and bone she is sturdy and compact without any sign of coarseness. Loved her head and kind expression with a cheeky beagle glint in her dark eyes. Her shoulders are well laid back, straight forelegs which were well under her, round bone, without any sign of tapering. Her movement is free and long reaching in front and tremendous drive from behind. Loved her, just wish she was mine, BAVNSC ,BAVNSC PUPPY ,HOUND GROUP 3 , HOUND PUPPY GROUP 1 AND RES BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
2ND Casentieri Alchez sky aint the limit glorious just 6-month-old red basenji bitch puppy. So unlucky to come up against the stunning beagle, wish I had 2 first places. She is lightly built and fine in bone, with dark, almond shaped eyes which are obliquely set. Her ears are slightly hooded and set well forward. Once settled on the move she went with a tireless swinging stride. Another I liked very much.
3rd Casentieri Alchez live for the night – another very promising Basenji
Class 210 junior (2 entries 1 ab)
1st Conroy Everwyck Caladria at Enolam almost 18 months, elegant, immaculately presented borzoi. Her head is long and lean with dark intelligent eyes. Perfect bite, her neck is long and free from throatiness. She moves so well with effortless power.
Class 211 post grad (1 entry)
1st Longmans Julemark Charity 22-month-old tri beagle who unfortunately had previously had a fright, but she settled enough to be assessed on the stack, good condition and a free mover.
Class 212 open (3 entries) another strong class headed by 2 quality basenji
1st Casentieri ch/lux ch Zvezny Alliance Genie in a bottle (imp UKR) Champion brindle Basenji who I have previously given a hound group to. Today I felt she was carrying a tad extra weight, and this seemed to affect her front movement. Not as tidy in front as I know she can be. Super quality and easily deserves her title. A super showgirl who I still rate highly.
2nd Knowles Sarawana Dragons conquest jw younger red basenji who is ultra pretty, but at times has a mind of her own. Full of her own importance on the move very smart with a good swinging stride. Still some maturing to do but think it won’t be long before she will trouble the best.
3rd Conroy Santerman the way we were at Enolam- borzoi
