Retford Canine Premier Open Show 2025

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge at their premier open show. It was a lovely day, well run and some quality dogs in attendance. My deepest thanks to my Stewards Anna and Roger for their brilliant stewarding and ensuring the ring ran smoothly and for their kind support. Lastly thank you to all the exhibitors who brought their lovely dogs under me. It was a privilege to judge your beautiful dogs. All dogs today were clean, happy and enjoying their day out.

Japanese Akita Inu

Puppy (1/1)

1st Mr M & Mrs SA Buckley & P Champman - MATSUKITA SATOMI

8 month red bitch in abundance of breed type. Stunning head with alert, dignified expression. Feminine round face with correct almond shaped eyes obliquely set. Small thick forward facing triangular ears making the whole head balanced and impressive for a bitch so young. Neat straight front with good bone leading into slightly sloped pasterns above tight arched feet. Balanced body with correct stand off top coat, soft dense undercoat and correct urajiro markings. Strong rear with moderate angulation and high set thick tail with a nice tight curl. Moved nice and steady around the ring. One to watch for the future. BP.

Junior (0/0)

Post Graduate (2/1)

1st Ms M Osbourne & Mrs K Janes - KOMADORI BOMEKA HIME GO

Another lovely red bitch of 21 months, really maturing well and coming into her own. Feminine, well-rounded head with thick, small, forward facing triangular ears giving her an overall pleasing expression. Nice dark pigment to mouth and nose, with balanced width and length of muzzle to head ratios and correct scissor bite. Good crest of head into strong neck and moderately laid-back shoulders. Standoff top coat with dense soft undercoat in great condition and correct urajiro markings. Well-developed chest and tight to body elbows with slightly sloped pasterns. Balanced body, with head and tail of equal size and proportion, good strong top line and nice high tail set with a lovely thick tight curl. One of the best movers today; she flew around the ring on light agile feet taking moderate strides with efficiency, converging towards the centre line at speed and giving the impression she could move like this all day. RBOB.

Open (3/2)

1st Mrs M Thompson & Mr P Champman – TSOYU TAMASHINO GO

A 4 year old Brindle bitch that could not be ignored. Oozing breed type, she held herself aloof and regal at all times whilst in the ring remaining confident and poised. Wonderful moon shaped, oriental head with full cheeks, well defined stop and distinct furrow, muzzle correct length to head ratio and correct scissor bite. Beautiful dark brown eyes obliquely set and small, thick, alert triangular ears that remained pricked and forward, flowing into a well crested head. Good clean scissor bite with nice dark pigment to gums and nose. H shaped front, well boned legs, deep chest and nice arched, tight, catlike feet. Balanced body with head and tail of similar size creating a lovely symmetry when viewed from side. Great top line and strong moderately angulated rear with well-developed muscular thighs. Standoff coat was of correct texture with soft dense undercoat and lovely defined brindle markings with correct urajiro in fabulous condition. Thick, tight curled tail, set on high. On the move she was effortless, maintaining a moderate, efficient gait converging towards the centre line at speed. BOB.

2nd Miss M Rayner – NARA GO TOWA NO MIYAKO (IMP ITA)

Beautiful 20 month old red bitch, still maturing but exactly where she needs to be and unfortunately not in her full coat today but this did not take away from her qualities. Aloof and alert when in the ring with correct almond shaped eyes obliquely set in the prettiest of heads, oriental, obviously feminine and well round in shape when viewed from the front. Small triangular forward-facing ears blended into a nice crest and strong neck. Good dark pigment to her mouth and nose. Correct Scissor bite. Balanced body, correct urajiro markings and good top line with a well-muscled body. She had arched, tight catlike feet. Light, easy movement and worked well with her handler. Would love to see this bitch again once she is more matured and in full coat as that gave 1st the edge today.
