Boxers
What a thrill and an honour it was for me to judge boxers at this well-run show, set in such a well-lit, airy hall at a centrally-located spacious venue which is pleasant inside and out and easily accessible. May I offer sincere thanks to my very able stewards, Maureen and John, for keeping me organised. Thank you to all the exhibitors who brought their boxers here today; all boxers are beautiful.
The majority of exhibits were in good, muscled condition and of sound construction. To me the eyes and toplines are important aspects of the breed, and it was good to see that the vast majority have the dark eye which the standard specifies. Overall I would say that head proportions were generally very good, but I admit to being on the lookout for the correct, perceptible chin which is such a key feature of the breed’s unique appearance. Teeth again raise a slight query as it did strike me with some of the older animals that the six incisors of the lower jaw were not easily visible, being somehow submerged in the gum, or disappeared. But this is not something new in the breed.
May I congratulate my BoB on being awarded 3rd in the Working Group. Likewise congratulations to my Best Puppy, who won the Puppy Working Group, and then on the Sunday went on to be awarded Best Puppy in Show. So pleased for both of these two.
SBD: No entries.
VD: 2(1) 1. Jones & Charles. Charlons Perseus. Dark brindle and white 8 year old. Lovely square outline, with balance of height at withers to length of body. Well-muscled crested neck. Smooth level topline. Super straight front legs, neat feet, correct angulation in hindquarters. Sadly a little unsound in a hind leg, I would not penalise this in a veteran animal standing on his own in the class. He appeared to be enjoying his time in the ring regardless. Best Veteran.
MPD: 3(2) 1. Fay-Smith. Lorrosa Uptown Funk. Fawn (red) and white dog, 7 months. Well developed in size, good balance of body length to height at shoulder. Moved very well with lovely drive and reach. Good short pasterns and strong bone in foreleg, well-muscled in hindquarters. In head, correct dark muzzle contrasting with coat colour. Teeth in lower jaw a wee bit forward but he is still growing and this could change.
PD: 3(0) 1. Pynegar. Berwynfa Pole Position. Dark brindle and white 10 month. Good bone, well-muscled. Well balanced head in correct proportion of muzzle to skull, correct earset, bright alert expression, good wide nostrils with upturn to tip of nose. Short firm pastern, super angulation, well developed musculation. Moved out soundly and accurately. Best puppy dog. 2. Saafan. Geovanic Boxa Punch. Dark brindle and white, 12 months. Similar qualities to 1, good outline, body length in balance to height, well developed hindquarters, kind expression, dark eye, good nostrils, strong bone in foreleg, neat feet, moved strongly and freely round the ring. Not quite as strong in head and hindquarters as 1. 3. Spencer. Ashronsha Mr Lover Lover.
JD: 4(1) 1.Brown & Hutchings. Winuwuk Ain’t No Sunshine. Fawn (red) and white with black muzzle, 13 months, very upstanding, clean-lined, clean body, good angulation in hindquarters, well-developed upper thigh, moved freely with ground-covering stride. Viewed from front, parallel legs with good bone. Correct depth of chest at brisket. Good mouth and earset. Very upstanding. Best junior male. 2. Mair & Mair. Lorrosa Dizzy Rascal at Glenauld, brindle and white, 17 months. Lovely bone in this dog, super angulation, correct depth from withers to brisket equalling length of foreleg to ground, short well-muscled back, lovely dark eye and expression, good nostrils. Would like feet a wee bit tighter. 3. Saafan. Geovanic Roamin’ For Love.
YD: 2(0) 1. Brooks, Brooks & Tooby. Jimi Hendrix at Jinnybrux. Fawn (red) and white, 18 month. An eye-catching level of self-assurance in this dog, and looking interested in his job today. Firm topline, good shape in hindquarters, good angulation, plenty of bone in foreleg, correct balance in head construction, kind expression in black mask, correct nostrils, right earset. Moved freely and with drive. 2.Kavanagh. Marbelton Mix’n Match. 20 month fawn (red) and white dog, very similar qualities to 1, Lovely clean outline. Good legs, correct feet, plenty of bone, kind expression, dark eye, super nostrils. Not quite as bodied up or muscled as 1, would like to see a tad more drop at brisket.
GD: 4(1) 1. Renshaw Turner, & Turner. Newlaithe Northern Soul at Sonshoby. 19 month, dark brindle and white. Very good proportions in this dog, height at withers matching length of body from forechest to rear. Crest of neck flows to good length of shoulder at withers, even slope to topline, well-angulated hindquarters, good hind angulation, with length of upper and lower thigh, leg from hock to foot is at the correct, slight angle, not vertical. Straight front, good depth of brisket. Good bone and neat feet. Head proportions of muzzle to skull in harmony, intelligent dark eyes, correct nostrils and earset. Moved soundly and evenly, with a positive attitude, knowing his job well. 2. Pynegar. Berwynfa Racing Lines. 10 month dark brindle and white. Very clean outline, well made, slightly larger than one, a wee bit anxious today, which is understandable as he’s still a baby. High rise of occiput, perhaps just a little exaggerated but at this age his head shape still has time to mature. So much to like, straight front legs, neat feet, well-muscled hindquarters. I felt that overall he just needs a little more time to grow into his outline fully. Handled very sympathetically. 3. Edwards & Edwards Febpool Bears Surprise.
PGD: 2(1) 1. Robinson. Legend of Thor at Robinsteck. Two year dark brindle and white. Standing alone in this class and a great example of the breed. Clean outline, correct balance of height at withers to length of body from forechest to hindquarters. Showing correct musculation in the right places. Long crested neck going in to perfect topline with the correct slope to it. Hindquarters well-muscled and shaped, correct angulation. Good front, lovely dark eye, good earset, would like nostrils to be a little wider.
LD: 6(0) 1. Mair & Mair. Glenauld the Chase. This three-year old fawn (red) and white came top of his class today not just for his physical attributes but also for his excellent attitude and behaviour. Looking at him, he is the epitome of the temperament that the standard specifies: equable, biddable, fearless, self-assured. He looks back at you, without fidgeting, and with a calm grounded assurance that is quite rare, and stands equably for inspection. Kind intelligent boxer expression, dark eye, width and depth of muzzle in balance with skull. Correct lip-to-lip placement, correct super wide nostrils, good earset, lovely straight front, well-boned, correctly muscled in neck, back, forequarters and hindquarters. Clean outline. Moved with the same attitude as he stood, freely and with drive – doing his job as required. RCC. 2. Huckerby & Dowell. Norwilbeck Bellchime Belta. Two and a half year dark brindle and white, clean square outline, crested neck of good length, kind alert expression, good firm sloping topline, wide upper thigh, neat feet. Dark eye, correct earset. A wee bit longer in body than 1. 3. Chell. Jimbren Elite Legacy at Ludic.
OD: 8(0) 1. Mair & Mair. Ch Macbarra Kickin Up A Storm At Glenauld JW. Four year old golden brindle and white. This dog caught my eye from afar and the opportunity to see him close-up showed me why. He is such a well-made boxer, all the elements of his construction fit perfectly together and all parts are in proportion to one another. He is well muscled in the right places and in good condition. His outline is in balance throughout, his body length from forechest to rear matching height at withers. Head proportions are correct with padded upper lips giving balance of muzzle to skull, which is cleanly covered. Upper lips resting on lower lip, showing perceptible chin. He has a kind dark eye, correct earset, just the right crest of neck to flow gracefully into clearly defined withers and topline, the latter being firm with a slight slope and firmly muscled. Straight parallel front legs with strong bone; good depth of chest to brisket. Short, strong pasterns, slightly slanted. Neat cat-like feet. Muscled upper thigh and perfect angulation in hindquarters. Overall a beautiful combination of substance with elegance. Super proportions with length of body matching height at withers, good forechest, depth at brisket half of height at withers, long, clean cut elegant crested neck, long sloping shoulder, clean topline, abdominal curve to rear adds to his elegant outline, upper thigh not quite as broad and muscled as 1. Good depth of muzzle with well-padded upper lips, perceptible chin, clean skull, straight front, neat cat-like feet. Strong movement driving him freely round the ring. 3. Carter and Carter. Ch Farvalley Major Luke at Susancar.
GCD: 1(0) 1. Murfin and Hart. Farvalley Pure Delight. Two year old golden brindle and white. Typical boxer expression, alert, with dark eye and good earset. Good balance in head proportions of muzzle to skull. Clean outline with good forequarter construction, long sloping shoulder and straight front, not quite fully dropped in brisket yet.
