Standard Wire Haired Dachshund

Firstly, I would like to thank the Southern Dachshund Association for the invitation to judge at their Championship Show. This was originally due to be held in conjunction with Windsor but following its cancellation the event was kindly accommodated at Richmond. My thanks also go to the exhibitors who entered and allowed me the pleasure of going over their wonderful dogs. One point I feel compelled to mention is size and length; several exhibits were simply too big overall and, in my opinion, could struggle to perform their original function. Body condition and mouths were excellent throughout, and the majority with super, harsh wire jackets. Of course as expected temperaments were delightful. 

Veteran dog or bitch 5 (3)

1. Romanchi Neptunium into Tepotis (Mr J & Mrs E Brown) 9 years, dog. Masculine head, good eye, correct ear placement, scissor bite. Adequate length of neck, well-laid shoulders, well-ribbed, short loin. Super harsh jacket carried on a strong body, a larger lad, a tad low to the ground, but was well angulated fore and aft and kept his top line on the move. Best Veteran.

2. Aventine Dolcetto (Mrs L J Coverly) 8 yrs, bitch. Pleasing head, feminine in outline, with a good reach of neck into adequate lay of shoulder and good length of rib and short loin. Kept top line on the move, a tad out of coat today.

1. Clipperdown Red Barron (Mrs A & Mrs M Hepner Theodoru & Hepner Chapman) A pleasing head with dark eye, correct ear placement and scissor bite. He shows a good reach of neck into a well laid shoulder, with a prominent forechest and is well boned throughout. When stacked he created a lovely overall picture; however, he is up to size and a tad long cast. This showed on the move and, being a little unsure of himself, threw him off balance and resulted in a tendency to sidewind. He has the required ground clearance and was presented in super condition.

Junior dog 2 (1)

1. Drakkina Dragon's Eye (Ms L Palmer) A pleasing, well furnished head with dark almond eye and scissor bite. He has an excellent reach of neck flowing into a well developed forechest, good ribbing and a short, strong loin. Hindquarters are well developed, though I would like to see greater drive from the rear, and he tended to toe in. Coat was excellent — a super, harsh jacket in top condition.

1. Tendrow Down To The Wire At Bramdac JW (Mrs C Akehurst) A very attractive male displaying excellent head qualities, with a dark almond eye, correct ear placement, scissor bite. He shows an excellent reach of neck into a well laid shoulder and carries a prominent forechest. Super length of rib, with a short, strong loin and balanced angulation fore and aft. He moved out with purpose, maintaining his topline throughout. Correct in size, shown in top condition, super harsh jacket. Reserve Dog CC.

1. Tendrow Rubens Hagrid (Mrs V Phillips) This male had excellent head qualities: dark almond eye, correctly placed ears, scissor bite. Shows good reach of neck and a prominent forechest. Ribbing of good length with a short, strong loin. Topline a touch soft, but hindquarters are well developed and he proved to be the best mover in the class. Carried a super harsh jacket.

1. Calico Just Me (Mrs S Apps) This male caught my eye the moment he entered the ring and did not disappoint on further inspection. He excels in head, with a dark, expressive eye, correct ear placement and scissor bite. He has an excellent reach of neck into well laid shoulders, a prominent forechest, correct ground clearance, good bone, is well ribbed and carries a short, strong loin. His hindquarters are well developed, and he moves so true fore and aft with the required reach and drive, keeping his topline at all times. Shown in a super harsh jacket. Correct in size and fitting the breed standard so well— I was genuinely surprised he has not yet been made up. Delighted to award him the Dog CC and even more so to see him go Best in Show.

2. Ch Tendrow Will To Suceed (Mrs V Phillips) A strong, upstanding male, larger in size than the winner. Masculine head, dark almond eye, correct ear placement and scissor bite. Shows good reach of neck and a prominent prosternum. Well ribbed with a short, strong loin. Hindquarters are well developed and he moved true fore and aft, but without the enthusiasm needed to produce the required reach and drive. Presented in super condition with a correct harsh jacket.

1. Clipperdown Good Grief (Mrs A & Mrs M Hepner Theodoru & Hepner Chapman) A feminine bitch with a pleasing head and eye, and correct scissor bite. She has a good reach of neck flowing into a well laid shoulder, a prominent forechest, good ribbing and a short, strong loin. Movement was true coming and going, and she held her topline well. Carried a super harsh jacket.

Puppy Bitch 4 (2)

1. Cloudside Xamira with Boloria (Mrs J Rowe) A smart, well balanced youngster who immediately appealed. She excels in head, with a dark, expressive eye, correct ear placement and correct scissor bite. Shows a good reach of neck into a well laid shoulder and a prominent forechest. Well ribbed with a short, strong loin. Hindquarters are strong and well angulated. She moved with reach and drive, true fore and aft, holding her topline at all times. Shown in a super harsh jacket and in excellent condition. A very promising young bitch, of correct size and I will follow her career with interest. BPIB and delighted to award her the Bitch CC.

2. Gentlegorse Dare to Believe (Dr M Eyre-Brook) Feminine youngster with a pleasing head, dark almond eye, scissor bite. Shows a good reach of neck and a prominent forechest. Well ribbed with a short loin, though her topline is disappointing — falling away behind the shoulders and rising too steeply over the loin, giving a roached outline. Well angulated behind and presented in a good harsh jacket.

Junior Bitch 2 (1)

1. Sunsong Shine Like A Star (AI) (Mrs S Seath) Another smart, well balanced youngster with super head properties: dark almond eye, correct ear placement and scissor bite. Shows a good reach of neck into a well laid shoulder and a prominent forechest. Well ribbed with a short, strong loin and well developed hindquarters. She moved well fore and aft, with reach and drive, keeping her topline at all times. Shown in super condition with a correct harsh jacket. She pushed hard in the challenge and was seriously considered for the RBCC.

1. Clipperdown Vivien Leigh (Mrs A & Mrs M Hepner Theodoru & Hepner Chapman) Full of beans today, and very much enjoying herself. She has super head properties, dark almond eye, correctly placed ears and scissor bite. An elegant neck leads into a well laid shoulder, with a prominent forechest, good ribbing and a short, strong loin. Hindquarters are well developed and she held her topline at all times. Moved well fore and aft. Shown in lovely condition with a correct harsh jacket.

2. Ottnott Doreen Martha (Mrs M J Hayes) Of smaller size and type than the winner. Pleasing in head properties with an expressive eye and scissor bite. Prominent forechest, though a tad upright in shoulder. Well ribbed with a short loin. Topline a little soft, but she moved adequately fore and aft.

1. Sunsong Hopes and Dreams (Mrs S Seath) A smart, well balanced bitch with super head properties: dark almond eye, correct ear placement and correct scissor bite. Her good reach of neck flows into well laid shoulders. Prominent forechest and correct ground clearance. Well ribbed with a short, strong loin. Hindquarters are strong and well developed. She kept her topline at all times and, once settled, moved well with reach and drive. In super condition with a correct harsh jacket. She certainly pulled it out of the bag in the challenge to be awarded the Reserve Bitch CC.

2. Feldhund Show The Way JW (Mrs A J & Mr A Beagrie) Feminine bitch with pleasing head properties, dark almond eye and scissor bite. A good reach of neck and a prominent forechest. A tad upright in shoulder. Well ribbed with a short loin. She toed in behind but moved acceptably in front and kept her topline. Of correct size and shown in a good harsh jacket.

1. Ch Boloria Oh Darling JW (Miss R Howlett & Miss R Rowe) A very smart and balanced bitch with super head properties: dark almond eye, correct ear placement and scissor bite. Up to size. She has a super reach of neck and a prominent forechest. A tad short in upper arm, but she excels in rib and loin, with strong, well muscled hindquarters that allowed her to power around the ring, keeping her topline at all times. Expertly shown and in tip top condition.

2. Ch Collidach Brook Sling Sh Cex (Mrs F Hutchings) Two lovely girls, and the same comments apply. I just found this one to be a little lower to ground, and it really was a case of splitting hairs between them.
