City Of Birmingham Championship Show September 6th 2026 Thank you so much City of Birmingham for inviting me to judge at this year’s show. It was a pleasure and an honour. I had a wonderful entry and all exhibits were turned out beautifully. Irish Setters always look so impressive on a green carpet, but it was a little slippery, and I felt movement was a little impacted with some moving more ‘carefully’ than they would normally, had it been on a concrete floor. That said it was a lovely big ring. My two stewards were excellent and kept the ring moving really well. Irish Setters Sp. Beginners Dog No entries VD (2) 1 Mrs J Russell’s Sh Ch Lynwood Hocus Pocus At Settesoli JW. This dog at nine years of age is like a fine wine. He just gets better and better! He is very balanced with a lovely topline and tailset. He has a beautiful refined head with correct unshelled almond shaped eyes, raised brows and low set ears. He has good angles both front and rear, super layback to shoulder and great depth through his chest. He moved out with enthusiasm, driving from his strong quarters. A really quality dog. He has a beautiful sister too! BV 2 Mrs C Robinson Slater’s (handled by Miss E Flinders) Kerryfair Lucky Seven. I had to look twice at the catalogue as I hadn’t realised that this dog is by the winner of this class. Another nice veteran at seven years old. He has a nicely proportioned head with kind eye. He is deep through his ribs and stands on strong limbs. His topline is gently sloping down to his correct tailset. He has strong hindquarters and straight from hock to heel. He moved out well. MPD (3) 1 Miss R Box’s Fernstart Lionheart. At just six months of age this puppy was so naughty, but he was having SUCH a good time! Full of mischief, but in between the naughtiness I got the occasional glimpse of a VERY nice puppy. He is so well proportioned, with good layback to shoulder, good forechest, and standing on strong limbs with good bone. He has a lovely head with dark expressive eyes and low set ears. He has the beginnings of a lovely rich dark coat coming through and is in super condition. Movement was erratic when he was playing up, but had a lovely stride when more settled. His handler was patient and calm with him, so she will get the best out of him. I see his sire is the RCC winner. A super puppy. BPD 2 Mrs B Berry and Mrs L Morris’ Forfarian The Uncloaked. Another nice minor puppy, a couple of months older than the previous one and coming along nicely, still at the ‘raw’ stage. When he was first stacked his front legs were much too far forward, but when corrected to back under his forehand it changed the whole picture. It showed off his nice layback to shoulder and good forehand construction. His quarters are strong and he is standing on good tight feet. He has a well balanced head, dark eye and lovely earset. Moved nicely. 3 Mrs J D Dow’s Forfarian The Recruited PD (1) 1 Miss J Turner’s Dazycutter Blazing Fire. Stood alone, but a worthy first place! Top end of puppy. Balanced head with good stop, low set ears. Good length to neck, good forechest. In lovely, shiny, dark coat. straight from hock to heel and good feet. Moved out well. JD (3,1a) Two very different types of dog in this class. 1 Miss NC, Miss C Hardy & Mrs M Rusinek’s Cafotaliena Play With Fire. A very attractive dog in super dark coat in wonderful condition. Not a tall dog, but has very good angulation fore and aft. Good forechest and well sprung ribs. Good tailset and hocks well let down. Pleasing head with dark kind eye. Moved very well. 2 Mrs G Hyslop’s Gwendariff Little White Lie (ikc) A much taller rangy dog, still needing to grow into and fill his frame. Beautifully proportioned head, masculine yet refined, with lovely kind dark eye and low set ear. Good forechest, good depth to his chest, standing on strong limbs with good bone. Tight feet. Moved well. YD (3) 1 Mr & Mrs N&S Foster’s Ixia Boys Don’t Cry At Shanoah JW. A very nice dog, nothing overdone. He has a lovely head, masculine yet refined, nice deep muzzle and lovely dark eye of correct shape. Good length to neck flowing seamlessly into good layback to shoulder. Super forechest, well sprung ribs, gentle slope from his withers to his well angulated strong hindquarters, good tailset. He stands on strong limbs with good bone and has tight feet. In lovely condition. Moved well. 2 Miss C Clarke’s Riverbrue Gives You Hell. Another very attractive dog in superb condition. He has lovely chiselling to his head with good stop and raised brows. Lovely kind expressive eye. Well angled forehand and hindquarters, good tailset. Great depth through his chest. Good bone, straight from hock to heel. Moved out well. 3 Mrs L Richardson’s Bluesprings Linda’s Legacy At Forestfire. GD (7) 1 Miss D Brown’s Riverbrue Deadpool. A very nice looking young dog in dark coat and in lovely condition. Nice outline with gently sloping topline from withers to correctly set on tail. Good head with dark eye, good length to neck and good forechest, front legs well back under his forehand, deep chest. Correct angles to hindquarters and straight from hock to heel. Moved well. 2 Mrs P Harris’ Fairhaven Young Soul For Konakakela (Imp.Swe.) JW. Different stamp of dog to first one. Good body proportions. Deep muzzle with low set ear, dark eye. Strong hindquarters, good second thigh. In full coat and good condition. Moved well. 3 Mr C L Wheeldon’s Quensha Fine And Dandy At Colemist. PGD (7) Two very nice quality dogs of similar age headed this class. 1 Mrs C A Sheldon’s Bardonhill That’s All Right At Delsanto A very sound dog with nothing overdone. Very balanced in construction. He has a masculine refined head of correct proportions, with lovely dark kind eye, low set ears. He has good length to neck leading to good layback to shoulder, very good depth to chest and prominent forechest. He has a gently sloping topline from withers to tailset and has strong quarters and strong second thigh. Short and strong from hock to heel. Moved well, but lost a bit of sparkle in the challenge. 2 Mrs D Murray’s Hanaleas Maximillian With Derrydore JW A super quality dog with lovely head and expression. Beautiful eye and deep muzzle, low set ears. Another who is very balance in conformation, correct angles front and rear. And, as in the first dog, nothing overdone. Strong second thigh, good bone and good feet. Moved well and soundly. 3 Mrs J M Lorrimer’s Gwendariff Disco Dazzler (ikc) JW. LD (11,1a) Wow! What a class. I have to say that I really liked each and every one, and I wish I had ten cards to give out! Thank you for bringing them all. I feel very honoured. 1 Mr E A Crocker & Miss A Frost’s Ronaldo Lofty At Riverbrue (Imp Swe) Every so often in one’s judging career, if you are lucky, you come across an exhibit that gives you goosebumps. That happened to me in this class. This dog when stacked commands your attention on the first walk around. He is quality from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail. He has a super head with dark mischievous eyes, low set ears, good length to neck and lovely lay back to shoulder. His topline is strong and gently sloping to his correct tailset. His forechest is excellent as is his spring of rib, hindquarters wide and strong with strong second thigh. Standing on good limbs with good bone and feet. He really fills the eye. He excels in movement, covering the ground with long easy strides. When I look at how he is bred I can understand why I like him so much as I loved his sire! Delighted to award him his first CC to go with his 2 RCCs. BOB. Shortlisted in the group. 2 Mr & Mrs J &L & Miss LH Richardson’s Bardonhill Mcintosh Red At Montgreenan JW This is a very attractive dog, unlucky to meet 1 today. He is presented beautifully in dark shiny full coat. He has a nice balanced head with dark eye and low set ear. He has good length to neck set cleanly into correctly angled shoulders, and a lovely gently sloping topline to his correct tailset. He has good depth to body all through and oozes quality. He moved out well driving from his strong quarters. 3 Mrs C A Sheldon’s Bardonhill A Million Ways to Delsanto OD (5) 1 Mrs M Bott’s Bardonhill Million To One. Already a Show Champion, this five year old dog is looking fantastic and absolutely in his prime. He really fills the eye, not overcoated, and with a super outline. He is masculine and full of quality. He has a lovely balanced head with good stop and raised brow, dark unshelled almond shaped eye and low set ears.His topline is perfect with gentle slope from his withers to his lovely tailset. Great depth through his chest, good forechest and front legs well back under his forehand. He is well off for bone and is strong in quarters and second thigh. Moved out with drive and was lovely to go over. RCC 2 Miss R Ellrich’s Sh Ch Ir Sh Ch Fin Sh Ch Gwendariff Absolutely Marwe’llus (Ikc) A beautiful dog from all angles, from the tip of his lovely nose to the tip of his tail! He has a perfectly balanced head, kind eye and low set ear, slight arch to his neck and correct shoulder placement. Super firm topline and tail set. He has good forechest, good spring of rib and strong well angled quarters with good width to second thigh. Hocks well let down and straight from hock to heel. Standing on lovely tight feet. He moved beautifully and I loved the little barks of joy during his run around! A very worthy Champion. 3 Mrs S Edwards’ Sh Ch Copper’s Get Off My Cloud By Bonhomie (Imp Swe). Another lovely dog which I admire greatly. I loved him as a puppy, and still do. He deserves a write up for his place in this lovely company. He is such an attractive dog with shiny dark coat, not overcoated which I like, and is in tip top condition. He has a beautiful head with good stop, raised brow, and dark expressive eye. He is a compact dog, everything fitting together perfectly, correct angles front and rear, and lovely tailset, tail coming straight off his back. He has a wonderful layback to shoulder and good forechest, standing on strong limbs with good bone. Moved with drive as you would expect from his powerful quarters. Another worthy Champion. GCD (1) Mrs A Macfarlane’s Harelferg New Tricks For Umfrido Shcex Stood alone in this class, but was seen in PGD. This five year old dog is very attractive and is in nice dark, straight coat and in very good condition. He has a nice balanced head with kind eye, and nicely proportioned body. He has good forehand and good hindquarters. He moved out with drive covering the ground well. Very nicely turned out. SBB (4,2a) 1 Mrs L Taylor’s Dendroch Anne Frank. I see this two year old bitch is by the dog RCC winner and has inherited some of his lovely qualities, one being his rich dark coat colour. She is a little out of coat just now, but the new coat coming through is lovely. She has a feminine head, good stop and dark eye. She stands over the ground well, has a gently sloping topline, nice front angulation and nicely angled hindquarters. Her movement was free and true, covering the ground well. A very attractive bitch. 2 Miss E Poplawska’s Shelindair Sing To The Rainbow To Cheyennesoul This is a very nice bitch, slightly smaller than the first and very well put together. Her head has a good stop, short muzzle and kind eye. She is balanced in conformation, front angles matching the rear, and has strong second thigh. She moved well and soundly. In lovely condition. VB (3) Three lovely, very different champion veterans in this class. All in super condition. 1 Mrs P Catling’s Sh Ch Teleri Indian Summer (Ai) JW This nine year old girl is just lovely. She exudes quality and is very refined. I loved her head, correctly long and lean, with soft dark eye. Her conformation is so balanced, everything fitting together perfectly, with no exaggeration. She has super front and hind angulation, slight arch to her well set on neck, and gently sloping topline down to her well set on tail. She has good second thigh, hocks well let down and straight from hock to heel. Movement was straight and true. She is very beautiful. 2 Ms M Hunter’s Sh Ch & Int Sh Ch Fairhaven Electra (Swed Imp). Another lovely bitch in super full coat and lovely condition, slightly longer cast than 1. Presents a very balanced picture with super conformation with plenty of substance, yet feminine. Her head has good stop, raised brow and lovely dark quizzical eye, low set ear. She stands on strong limbs with good bone and feet. She moved out well driving from her strong quarters. 3 Mrs S & Miss J Sturrock & Mrs N Watt’s Sh Ch Forfarian Soo Lush JW MPB (2) 1 Mrs S & Miss J Sturrock & Mrs N Watt’s Forfarian The Seduced. What a beautiful puppy this is! At eight months of age she is showing such promise. She has a beautiful feminine head with lovely chiselling, good stop, raised brow, dark intelligent eye and super low earset.. She has such good length to her neck and is very clean over her shoulders. Good depth to her chest and strong hindquarters. She stands on straight forelegs with good bone. Moved very well. Coat of good texture coming through. Everything just right for her age. 2 Mr & Mrs I & S Tillett’s Margico Paloma Lofty (Imp Pol) (Naf Taf) This puppy was giving her handler a really hard time! Sure she will improve with time and more training. At seven months of age she is still very raw and gangly, but has the makings of a nice puppy. She has a nice dark coat and is in good condition. She has a nice front and strong quarters. It was hard to assess her movement as she wasn’t cooperating, but another month can make all the difference. Keep going. You will get there! PB (3) 1 Mr G T Allen,& Bott, Mrs C & Morgan’s Glitterati Lofty With Quensha (Imp Pol). This bitch is lovely. She is lovely in profile and fits together perfectly. She has a beautiful head and eye with low set ear. Slight arch to her neck set into clean shoulders. She has correct angles fore and aft and has super depth through her chest. Lovely forechest, front legs well under her forehand. Strong quarters, good width to second thigh and good bone. Moved well, straight and true. Overall a balanced feminine picture. BPB & BPIB 2 2 Miss J Turner’s Dazycutter Thegirlsonfire This bitch is at the top end of puppy and is in attractive dark shiny coat and in lovely condition. She doesn’t yet have quite the substance of 1 but presents a pleasing overall picture. She has a nice head with dark eye and deep muzzle, nice length to neck and clean over her shoulders. Nice forechest, strong quarters and moved well, driving from behind. 3 Mr & Mrs S & K George’s Dazycutter Fire Dancer JB (6,1a) 1 Mrs L Sketchley’s Sametsuz So To Speak. This bitch is lovely in profile and is very racy. She has a lovely rich chestnut coat coming through. She is feminine and balanced, has a nice head, kind eye and low earset. She has super layback to shoulder, good forechest and well sprung ribs. Her hindquarters are strong and she has good width to her second thigh, standing on good limbs, nice bend to stifle and short from hock to heel. Moved out really well. BJ 2 Mrs M Bott’s Bardonhill As You Like It This bitch has inherited substance and quality, plus a rich dark coat, from her lovely sire. She is so well made and has a good stop to head, raised brow and soft dark eye. She has a gentle arch to her neck leading to good shoulder placement, gently sloping topline and good tailset. I loved her rugged strong quarters and good bone, short from hock to heel. She is very attractive and feminine. Movement was straight and true. 3 Mr G & Mrs C Stevenson’s Gwendariff Crackling Rosie For Lochlorien (Ikc) YB (6,2a) 1 Mrs A Roberts & Miss M Beresford’s Polmennor Spice Of Life JW This rising two year old bitch is a little out of coat at the moment, so nothing is hidden, and her correct conformation is easy to see. Lovely rich coat is coming through and she is in excellent condition. She has a balanced head, good stop, lean muzzle and kind dark eye. Her neck is of good length and flows without a break into her clean shoulder placement, topline gently sloping down from her withers to correct tailset. She is nicely angled front and rear and has good width to quarters. She is feminine and racy and moved out very well. 2 Mr & Mrs J & P Humphreys & Ms A Frost’s Riverbrue Kinky Boots. Another bitch in super condition, longer cast than 1. Her head is balanced showing good stop and raised brow. Good unshelled almond shaped dark eye, low earset. Slight arch to neck and nice layback to shoulder, firm topline, tail set on well coming straight off her back. She has good forechest, well bent stifles and good bone. Moved out very well. 3 Mrs L Taylor’s Dendroch Anne Frank. GB (10,1a) This was a very strong class. I wished I had more cards! 1 Ms J Evans’ Riverbrue Pixie This bitch caught my eye on the first walk around. She is so refined and full of quality, with a most beautiful head and expressive kind eye. She is balanced and feminine in profile, very racy, nicely angled front and rear with good tailset. She has good forechest, good length to leg, forelegs well back under her forehand. She has good bone and feet. She moved freely and true. I really liked her. 2 Mrs J L & Mr S Nicholls’ Riverbrue Storm At Krakonastorm JW I see that these two are litter sisters, so very similar in type. I think maybe the first takes more after her dam. They are both lovely. It must have been a very good litter. This dog is also balanced and clean over her shoulder with good spring of rib, firm sloping topline and good tailset. Nice bend to stifle, good bone and tight feet. Moved well driving from her strong quarters. 3 Miss J Parsons & Mrs D Parsons’ Quensha Woman In Love At Bransett PGB (7,2a) 1 Mrs S Edwards’ & Miss C Ostman’s Emma Copper’s Mahogany Dream Catcher. This attractive, dark coated bitch is in super condition. Not a tall bitch, she has lovely construction, everything flowing together seamlessly with no exaggeration, and is very ‘easy on the eye’. She has a balanced head, lovely expressive eye and nice deep muzzle. Her forehand is very good with correct angles, and is very clean over her shoulders. I really liked the width to her strong hindquarters, and width to her second thigh. She is standing on good limbs and feet. Moved out really well covering the ground with long easy stride. 2 Mrs J Mugford’s Kedalita Abfab For Lynwood JW. Another very attractive feminine bitch, close up to 1. She is in good coat and lovely condition. Her head is lovely, very balanced, with good stop, raised brow and dark unshelled almond shaped eye. She has a nicely arched neck, good layback to shoulder and good forechest. She has good body proportions, good spring of rib and well angulated hindquarters. Nice bend to stifle, hocks well let down. Moved very well. 3 Mrs P Mitchell’s Kerryfair Misty Love For Amblin LB (8,1a) 1 Mrs R & Dr H Jones’ Gwendariff Rhianna JW. This bitch is very beautiful. I have admired her from the ringside for a long time and think this is the best I have ever seen her look. She has such a lovely feminine head, totally balanced, with the kindest dark eye. Her ears are low set and she has good length to her neck which flows without a break into her good shoulder placement. She has lovely sloping topline from her withers to her tail, and has correct angulation to her forehand and hindquarters. She has good depth to her chest and good spring of rib. Her hindquarters are wide and strong, stifles nicely bent, and standing on good bone and feet. Loved her movement which was straight and true. She is very feminine, full of quality, and is in superb coat and condition. Well handled. Delighted to award her her second CC to go with her two RCCs 2 Mrs S & Miss J Sturrock & Mrs N Watt’s Forfarian Tickles Yer Fancy. I have always admired this bitch. She is so correct in her conformation and has no exaggerations whatsoever. Her head is lovely, long and lean, with good stop and correctly shaped dark eye. She has good layback to shoulder, good forechest, good spring of rib, and has strong rugged hindquarters. Her second thigh is strong , stifles well bent, straight and short from hock to heel. Her movement is lovely. She is very light on her feet and moves with enthusiasm. Well presented. RCC to go with her 2ccs and 4 RCCs OB (10,4a) This was another wonderful class! 1 Mrs J Mugford’s Sh Ch Lynwood Rather Scrumptious JW. And scrumptious she certainly is! She is looking at her best I think, and is in her prime. Her coat is looking just right and she is in tip top condition. She has plenty of substance, yet feminine and racy. She has a good head, kind dark eye and ears set on low and well back. Her neck is of good length and has a slight arch, super forehand, front legs well back showing good forechest. She has great spring of rib and strong hindquarters, good tailset and nicely bent stifles. She moved out really well. A worthy champion. 2 Mr G T Allen,& Bott, Mrs C & Morgan’s Quensha Joker And The Queen. Already a Champion I believe. This four year old bitch is looking in wonderful coat and condition. She has the loveliest of heads with expressive kind dark eye and low set ear. Her construction is balanced and racy with correct angulation to forehand and hindquarters. She has good forechest, great depth and spring to rib, and good width over her hindquarters. Stifles well bent and short and straight from hock to heel.
