English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan)

I was looking forward to awarding CCs for the first time and I was not disappointed. A very well organised show with plenty of space and perfect ring set-up. Thankfully the weather was not too hot, with a good breeze to keep us cool. At times it was a little too breezy for some of the ETTs who didn’t like the creaking and rattling noises in the tent. For this reason, I assessed movement outside the tent. Thank you to the Boston Committee for giving me this opportunity and thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over your dogs. As this is only my first CC appointment in ETTs, I am not going to write a long pre-amble, however I must mention that I am concerned about movement in some exhibits. A few are very close behind, with hocks almost rubbing together. Some have “tucked under” hind quarters because their pelvises are set on at the wrong angle, bringing their hind legs too far under their bodies and making it impossible for them to extend and drive from the rear. I doubt they would have the power and agility to be able to acquit themselves in a rat pit. That said, all the principal winners moved correctly. I haven’t commented on mouths as all the winners had a correct scissor bite.

MPD (4) 1. Imrie & Leonard’s White Knight at Witchstone. Six months old and already showing promise. Lovely curvy shape and correct topline which he held on the move. Good length to his wedge-shaped head, dark almond-shaped eyes with a delightfully wicked look. Ears set on correctly with a flat skull. Good rich chestnut tans. Moved parallel and true with drive. Pleased to award him Best Puppy and delighted to see him go on to win fourth in the Puppy Group. 

2. Dean-Armitt’s Etruria I Say. This eight month old puppy also has lots to like. Although he is slightly older than the winner, I think he may be slower to mature and needs time to fill out. He has a nice shape with balanced angulation and a good topline. His head is wedge shaped, and his ears are set on well. Good, clear thumb prints and good tan. Moved well when settled. 

3. Pendlebury’s Ettology Stand and Deliver.

PD (1) 1. Harcarik’s Gillings Morning Star. This nine month old dog is well up to size but everything is still balanced and in proportion. A tad longer cast than I would like, but not too overdone. Handsome head with candle flame ears. He moved quite well but slightly uncoordinated. If he was a hound I would say that he’s at the “all wings and elbows” stage. Not a technical description but it is apt for this dog in that he is going through a gangly, awkward stage and needs time to develop.   

JD (3,1) 1. Dowson & Dowson & Ramsden & Kagzi’s Pallisandre Vegas Lights. This was a close decision. This eight month old boy is well up to size, but he is balanced and had the best movement in this class. His head is long and wedge-shaped, but I would prefer him to have a fraction more stop. His skull is flat and his ears are set on well. Good, almond shaped eyes. His topline is correct and not overdone. In good, muscular condition. Well angulated rear which he used well, moving with drive. Moved parallel and true with enough width behind. 

2. Partington-Palmer & Palmer’s Winsome Flames Aussie Gold (Imp Swe). This sixteen month old boy presented a more compact outline. He has a nice shape when stacked on the table, however he seemed to lose his topline on the move. Good, wedge-shaped head. Well set ears and dark eyes. Lighter tan. He didn’t seem completely on form today and wasn’t co-operating fully with his handler. He moved with drive from the rear, but slightly untidy in front movement.

LD (1) 1. Pendlebury’s Ettology Small Gods of Pendlethrine. This two year old presented a compact outline and good size. He has a handsome head with small, dark eyes and good ear set. His thumbprints are very clear and well-defined, with good tan markings in all the right places. He has a straight front and a good underline. On the move he lost his topline and appeared to be slightly too high in the rear. He moved fairly well but would benefit from slightly more angulation in his front and rear which would provide more extension and drive.

OD (6, 2) 1. Leonard’s Ch Witchstone Nasabe Strikes Back JW. Very handsome 19 month old. He presents a compact outline with flowing curves in all the right places. He has a super, wedge shaped masculine head with dark, almond shaped eyes set at the right angle to give a typically sparkling and slightly wicked expression. His ears are well set and used well to complete the picture. His coat is jet black with rich tan markings. My only tiny criticism is that his thumbprints could be better defined to complete the cherry on the icing on the cake. He has a strong arched neck into well angulated forequarters and straight legs. This is matched by his well-angulated hindquarters which he used very well on the move. He was one of the few that moved effortlessly with extension and drive. Pleased to award him the CC and BOB. It was great to see him shortlisted in the Toy group too.  

2. Partington-Palmer & Palmer’s Ch Etruria Hear The Word. This three year old is another worthy champion. Shown in excellent condition. He presents a typical outline with correctly curving topline. He is balanced with enough angulation to his front and hindquarters. To be very picky I would prefer darker tan and better definition between the black and tan. He moved well but was pipped to the post by the winner who showed more extension and drive. 

3. Love ‘s Witchstone Follow The Dream with Tettoy.

VD (2) Both owners should be commended for the excellent condition of these veterans. 1. Imrie’s Ch Witchstone Black Hawk at Amalric JW. A worthy champion who, even at eight years of age, can still give the youngsters a run for their money. Masculine wedge shaped head with dark almond shaped eyes and good ear set. Dark black coat and rich tans with hardly any grey hairs. His thumbprints have smudged slightly but still defined well enough. He obviously loves to show and can get a little too excited on the move, making his front movement untidy at times. Having said that he still powered around the ring with good drive from the rear. Pleased to award him the RCC.

2. Whitehouse’s Twowayshouse Tudor King for Dalmonde. Just seven years old. Very well presented in fit, well-muscled condition, looking like he could easily dispatch a rat. He has a wedge shaped head, but I would prefer him to be slightly narrower in back skull. Well set ears but he wasn’t using them to best advantage today – maybe due to the windy conditions. Good topline and balanced angulation. Moved well but not with quite as much extension and drive as the winner.

MPB (3) 1. Pendlebury’s Lasagesse A Kind of Magic of Pendlethrine. Presented a balanced outline on the table with curves in all the right places. Enough bend of stifle matched with balanced angulation in her forequarters. Rich tan markings and defined thumb prints. Pretty, feminine, wedge shaped head. To be hyper-critical I would prefer her head to be a fraction longer. Good ear set and carriage. She moved well, holding her topline. 

2. Chamberlain’s Lasagesse Killer Queen at Mistioak. Litter sister to the winner of this class and many of the same comments apply. She was handled very well and stood perfectly on the table and when free standing on the ground. Pretty, feminine head and expression. Good tan markings and defined thumb prints. She held her curvy topline on the move. A close decision between these two but the winner was more settled on the move today. 

3. Crowley’s Adargwn Paris.

PB (1) 1. Phillips’ Ettology Worth The Wait. This eight month old presented a very curvy outline when standing on the table. Feminine expression with wedge shaped head and neat ears. Dark, almond shaped eye. Rich tan with clear thumb prints. Moved OK with enough extension in front, but not enough drive from the rear today.  

JB (2) A tricky decision between the two in this class. 1. Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf. This fifteen month old won the class on maturity. She was presented in excellent condition. My only slight criticism is that she could benefit from losing a little weight to better highlight her curvy shape. Good tan markings and thumb prints. Wedge shaped head with dark eyes. Her ears are set correctly but she didn’t always use them to her advantage – possibly due to the blustery conditions. Good depth of chest leading into correct tuck up. Held her topline on the move. Moved with enough extension and with power and drive from her hindquarters. 

2. Ramsden & Kagzi’s Pallisandre Time to Dance. Pretty bitch built on a much finer frame than the winner of this class. She presented a balanced outline when standing on the table, with good front and rear angulation. Good topline with enough of a curve into a well set tail. Clearly, very much a puppy at only eight months old, and needs more time to develop. Good tan markings and thumb prints. Moved well for one so young but she dropped her topline a little when on the move. This is what lost her the Best Puppy challenge against the dog puppy.

YB (2) 1. Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf. See 1st in JB.

2. Pendlebury’s Wykewoks Autumnal Sunsetta of Pendlethrine. Close decision between these two. This young lady presented a balanced outline when standing on the table. Presented in very good condition. She has a wedge shaped head with dark eyes and a feminine expression. Would prefer her skull to be slighter flatter between her ears, but her ears are correctly set and she used them well. Good tan markings. Thumb prints slightly smudged but still clear enough. She would benefit from a little more bend of stifle which would give her more drive from her hindquarters. She lost her topline on the move today and seemed a little unsettled – maybe due to the blustery conditions.   

PGB (1) 1. Crowley’s Adargwn Milano Cortina. Very fine and dainty six month old puppy. Pretty head and expression with well set ears. Presented a curvy outline when standing on the table. Visible thumb prints, albeit a little faint. Moved quite well for one so young but sadly lost her topline on the move. This may improve and she develops and gains confidence. Still very much a puppy and not as well developed as the others in the challenge for best puppy bitch.

LB (5,1) 1. Green & Leonard’s Three Times A Lady. Almost three years old. She won this class on her movement and balance. Pretty, feminine expression with a wedge shaped head. Good ear set and carriage, and dark eyes. Slightly paler tan but good markings and thumb prints. Topline correctly curved without being overdone. She held her topline on the move. Not the flashiest, but her front and rear angulation gave her the ability to move with extension and drive. Pleased to award her the Reserve CC. 

2. Dowson’s Lasagesse Go Your Own Way with Binkota. This three year old won this place on her compact outline. She is out of a very different mould from the winner, being more compact and shorter coupled. She looks like she could easily turn on a sixpence to dispatch a rat. Presented a curvy outline when standing on the table but was slightly hunched up when on the ground – maybe due to the noisy tent and blustery conditions. Pretty head and expression with dark eyes. Her ears tended to form a bonnet shape, rather than the desired candle flame, but they are well set. Good topline with correct slope to her croup. Moved well with enough extension and drive, however she seemed not entirely settled today and I’m sure she could show herself to better advantage on another day.

3. Hall & Oakden’s Spawood Proud Mary with Ghilgrange JW.

OB (5,1) 1. Leonard’s Ch Witchstone Silent Prayer. At almost three years old this worthy champion won on her very feminine shape and size. Presented a balanced, compact outline with a correct, curving topline. Good depth of chest and tuck up giving the correct underline. Very pretty head and expression. Lovely dark, small, almond shaped eyes giving a slightly wicked expression. Good tan markings and visible thumb prints. When she moved she had correct extension in front and drive from her well muscled hindquarters. Very pleased to award her the CC.

2. Wood & Leonard’s Lady in Black at Witchstone. Another at almost three years old. She is built on a larger frame than the winner of this class but is still feminine and presents a balanced outline. She has a long, wedge shaped head but it is a fraction on the narrow side and I would prefer her to be slightly broader in back skull. Her ears are correctly set and she used them well. Good tan markings and visible thumb prints. She moved well with enough extension and drive, but sadly she lost her topline on the move today.

3. Benson’s Nasabe Royal Rose with Airambech.

VB (2) 1. Haffenden & Wood’s Ch Witchstone Minnehaha VW. At nine years old this bitch is still on form and very sprightly for her age. Presented a balanced outline when standing on the table with curves in all the right places. She has a correct topline with a flowing curve from her withers to her tail. She has good tan markings and although her thumb prints have faded with age, they are still visible. Beautiful head and expression with true candle flame ears and a flat skull. She moved with extension and drive, keeping her topline on the move. She challenged for Best Veteran against the younger male, but I couldn’t deny her the award and I was delighted to see her win second in the Veteran group.

2. Benson’s Ch Nasabe Lily Marlene JW. At just seven years old this girl still looks in her prime. She a good outline, with a correct topline. She has a pretty head and expression with a correct wedge shape, dark, almond shaped eyes and correctly set ears. She has good tan markings. Her thumb prints have smudged slightly with age, but they are still visible. She moved well but was slightly erratic at times, making her footfall less accurate than the winner.

SBB (2) 1. Marsden’s Regalriver Big Bad She Wolf. See above for critique. She won this class on her maturity over the puppy.

2. Chamberlain’s Lasagesse Killer Queen at Mistioak. See second in MPB.
