It was an honour to be invited to judge at their 20th anniversary general championship show at this stage of my judging pathway, my deepest gratitude to Leila Tarabad, all the officers and committee of Boston & District Canine Society who gave me this opportunity, especially for assigning me a ring in the Best In Show marquee. I was very lucky to have two breed specialists to steward for me, many thanks to Pat Lepley & Gavin Argyle. 

I would like to thank all the exhibitors that entered under me and it’s such a privilege that many of them have brought their champions along. Some of these also have their progeny present which is promising. Overall, presentation of exhibits is excellent, any noted deviations from standard do not pose cause for concern. Most of the exhibits are of correct size, especially regarding bitches and puppies, as I do find there is a misguided bottom-up approach towards size, ‘maturing earlier’ seems to be the norm rather than an exception, which normalises borderline over-sizing of our breed. More dogs with various degree of biscuit shading which is encouraging and should be celebrated. Great bunch of exhibitors all with good grace and great sportsmanship. Thank you all.

1st Hopkins Navratilova‘s Dynar Sun King. 7-month-old, like father like son, fondly reminded me of his dad as a puppy. Wedge shaped head with good width, thick well-fur ears, nicely shaped eyes giving him a kind expression with dark pigment all round, deep chest and correct angulation, texture coat, all developing nicely for his age, good carriage of tail. Ideal puppy size, very sound movement with decent drive development. On this day, just got pipped by his sister. BPD

1st O’Dwyer’s Aspenbeauty Making Dreams for Kalinski (AI) (Imp Aus). 5-year-old, Strong masculine head with balanced proportions, well set ears and eyes, very attentive to his handler. Good front with deep ribcage but would like more muscle tone, especially in hindquarters, which probably explained the slightly loose rear action resulting in not enough drive which put him out of running for today’s top honours.

All Champions in their own right, each have got different aspects that they excel in. On a different day, at different venue, surface or lighting, with slightly different performances, the placings could easily be swapped around. The dog that ticks all the boxes and performed consistently throughout this day is: 

1st Hopkins Navratilova‘s Aut/Swiss/Nld/Bel/Int Ch Holy Archie Orleansnow (Imp Cze). 4-year-old, really coming into his prime. Strong head with broad skull, eyes and ears well set, strong muzzle with correct bite, Always with his perfect Sammy smile, and showing good temperament. Very unassuming and unwavering attention to his handler. His strength is on the move, he moves round with elegance and grace, great top-line, well balance with strong drive. Reliable and fit for function, general all-round performer,  BD & BOS. 

2nd Craig & Scobell’s Ch Samoravich Danger Zone. 6-year-old, strong wedge-shaped head, nice size ears, almond shape eyes, all well set, strong muzzle with good pigmentation all-round. Well sprung ribs, deep chest and strong loin. Great example of breed type, especially with his biscuit shading, shame he didn’t benefit from showing under sunlight today. Good bone, strong front and rear unit, good foot usage to create strong drive out and back. There are only minuscule aspects that separate him from top honours today, just got pipped by one, a more consistent performer and the other, a lovely surprise that make my day.

1st Craig & Scobell’s Smiling Snowball Athos at Samoravich (Imp Est). 8-year-old but certainly would not look out of place if he was in Open Class amongst all the younger champion dogs. One of the few dogs here that I have little recollection of as I haven’t seen him in a ring for several years but what a specimen and a lovely surprise. Masculine head, well set thick furry ears, almond eyes, deep dark pigment all round. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, nice harsh coat with correct tail set, good bone and structure which all adds up to a perfect silhouette. The best representation on the youthful nature of our breed. Hope to see him more often in the ring, as with more polish and consistent performance, he should challenge for top honours. BVD, RBD & BV.

1st Willcock & Ryan‘s Dynar Temple Of Beauty. 7-month-old, litter sister of BPD. Lovely wedge-shaped head, furry ears correctly placed, expressive eyes which gives a lovely, sweet expression. Well proportioned and size, well sprung ribs, bone and muscle developing nicely. Lovely coat for her age with good carriage of tail. The further into the competition she goes, she settles down and displays a well-balanced and effortless movement coupled with strong drive. Today, she just beat her brother with a bit more spirit and character. No doubt in awarding her BPB, BP & witnessing her still going strong late on the day and being awarding Pastoral Puppy Group 4.

1st Willcock & Ryan‘s Dynar Chasing The Crown. 10-month-old, probably in transition out of her puppy stage and many aspects are developing at slightly different rates, so not as neat a package as MPB. There are great components, lovely dark eyes, good pigmentation all round, good reach of neck, nice level top-line. Moves soundly with confidence. Optically, just a little bit stretched out in muzzle and body, but hopefully in time will develop a more balance picture. 

2nd Wickenden’s Lupussky Eos Skadi. 11-month-old, at similar stage as 1 so still working progress and with improvements to attain. Excellent temperament. Would hope to see more bone & muscle development, lack the drive of 1. Tail carriage a bit high and loose. Movement should get a bit tighter with more experience in the ring.

1st Fowler & Fowler‘s Artsam Butterfly. 15-month-old pretty girl with lovely feminine expression. Ears, eyes, muzzle all correct size and nicely balanced. Good coat texture and condition. Well proportioned, good angulation front and back, excellent muscle tone. Good ground coverage and moves as one with her young handler. It’s encouraging to witness the development of these two, from where they started out from to reaching this level of showmanship and teamwork, whilst still retaining a great deal of fun. BSpBegB, BSpBeg, Pastoral Special Beginners Group 1 and with no surprise at all, Best Special Beginners in Show.

2nd Roberts’ Artsam Shady Lady for Archaeus. 15-month-old, litter sister of 1, and it’s really splitting hairs between the two, being both displaying pleasing heads, well-constructed and obviously from good stock. I prefer this sister’s tail set but probably need more consistency on the move.

1st Fowler & Fowler‘s Artsam Butterfly. See JB1, but with older brother handling. It’s never easy to swap handlers during a show especially with hardly any time in between. With all things considered, he did a sterling job, with only a slight dip of concentration and still good enough to win this class. Long term maybe a better idea to have an additional dog rather than splitting the dog between the two.  

2nd Rowe’s Rosnorske Royal Bunny Girl. 2-year-old, certainly look like she’s enjoying herself. Pleasing head with well placed ears, almond shape eyes, alert and inquisitive. Strong neck and back finish with a profuse tail carrying nicely by the side. The lack of familiarity to showing is noticeable but is one aspect that can easily be remediable to achieve greater rewards.

1st Brandenberg, Smith & Jackson’s Novaskaya Yva Lefay by Taronakits JW. 2-year-old with superb head, to type, well set eyes and ears, good pigmentation. Good reach of neck set well on shoulders. The lack of coat slightly distorted the outline but otherwise good depth of chest and strong loin. Strong hocks and pasterns, moved with good reach and drive to win this class. 

2nd King & Jenning’s Original Beauty Lady Orleansnow JW (Imp Cze). 21-month-old, flat skull, well-proportioned head with soft feminine expression. Body outline and construction not that dissimilar to 1. Great tail carriage and coat with good texture. Lost out only because a tad subdued on the move and also found the slightly tailored look on the feet distracting.

3rd McGreade’s Vandreem Imperial Ocean for Frostia.

OB (3, 0)

1st Bee‘s Ch Rosskaja Ginjo Pearl for Snowbiscuit JW. 2-year-old, gradually maturing to a worthy champion and she will be hard to beat with ever growing confidence in the ring. Tick all the boxes in regards of type, size and construction. Feminine and striking head base on a good width skull, correct placements of features and fully developed pigmentation. Moderate neck, firm topline, toned body over well sprung ribs and strong loin. Movement all round is well-balanced, true and with grace. Easily my BB and displayed a little more character than the BD today and be my well-deserved BOB. Although didn’t go further this time in the group, she certainly feels at home amongst her peers. 

2nd Willcock & Ryan’s Slo/Int/Nld/Rsm/It Ch Mishka Na Severe Jam N Honey For Tea at Dynar ShCEx (Imp Rus) Bel JCh. 4-year-old, mum of PB1. Strong wedge-shaped head with well set thick furry ears. Would prefer the eye shape a little more tapered but well set and muzzle a touch too prominent. Overall well-constructed and fit for function. Ample bone with superb muscle tone. Good carriage of tail. Move with fitness.

3rd Lukkonen’s Mishka Na Severe Kiss Of The Rose (Imp Cze).

VB (4, 1)

1st Brandenberg & Smith’s Ch Taronakits Its Kwest JW. 8-year-old still demands attention as she comes into the ring. Strong head construction with flat skull, nice pigmentation, appealing eyes, correct bite, a perfect ‘Sammy smile’ and display the youthful nature of the breed. Still in very good condition, well-presented coat, correct tail set and lovely featherings. Good reach of neck, well sprung ribs, muscle tone slightly loose which is reasonable for her age. Moved well, good ground coverage, and good and strong enough to fend off most of the youngsters to be my RBB & BVB. Just stand off me a bit today to not get BV.

2nd O’Dwyer’s Ch Kalinski Dushka Maia. 12-year-old, sadly age started to catch up with her. Very tentative to her handler and enjoying herself. Not the flashiest type, but on close inspection, another wonderful specimen of our breed! Thick fur ears well set, eyes, bite and pigmentation weathered but still didn’t distract to the overall picture of her lovely expression. Good deep chest, well laid shoulders and good angulation, front and back. Compact correct silhouette, well proportion, good leg length. Considering her age, movement is still balanced with good stride, but sadly just lack drive. Thank you for showing her, as many do sadly retire their Sams way too early. She’s lovely.

Last but not least,

1st Willcock & Ryan’s Dynar Absinthe Hemingway JW Rsm JCh. 2-year-old, was expecting to see her in one of the top classes, as it will certainly make hard work for me to place her amongst her peers rather than just a procession on her own. Probably the most dynamic girl today, good construction, well angulated, covered the ground well, but I would prefer a slightly more measured pace so I can see a cleaner action. A lighter jacket with a well carried tail set, good texture and nice featherings.
