Paignton & District Fanciers' Association

Breed: Basset Fauve De Bretagne

Thank you to the committee of Paignton for their invitation to judge at this popular, well run championship show. Many thanks to my two efficient stewards, Shayne and Shaun, who kept the ring ticking over perfectly and provided me with a refreshing cold drink. Thank you more importantly to the exhibitors who gave me the opportunity to judge their hounds. It was exciting to watch my best special beginner win Group 4, and my BOB win HG2 in wonderful company. My only gripe is that a few of the exhibits had nails that were long overdue a trim.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG OR BITCH 2

1st Horn, Miss Karen Mochras Mahqueen I liked the outline on this pretty 13- month-old bitch; she is nicely constructed and very together for her age. Lovely, typical head with dark eyes and nose, her ears are set correctly and are nicely folded. Her front and rear angulations are balanced; she is level in topline and her loin is broad. She has width to her hindquarters with a good bend of stifle and low set hocks. She was positive on the move, with her tail carried happily. RBB & SBHG4

2nd Horn, Miss Karen Mochras Marta Mature 6-year-old shown in a lovely dense jacket. Feminine, domed head with expressive dark eyes and correct shape to her ears. Fair neck into a decent shoulder placement, she has a slight crook to her forelegs, and her feet just turned out a little more than I prefer. She is level in topline and maintained her outline on the move although just not as positive as 1st.

JUNIOR DOG 1

1st Allenby, Mrs Heidi & Allenby Miss Maisie Revenite Sergeant Wilson For Rangali Lovely balanced outline on this 14-month-old boy, I loved his size and proportions. Masculine head of good planes with correctly shaped dark eyes and lovely furnishings. He is soundly made in front with the desired fore chest, well sprung ribs and a strong, muscular loin. Shown in a super harsh coat, this boy is a free and active mover, true in all directions. RDD

POST GRADUATE DOG 1

1st Thornton, Mrs Elizabeth Mochras Harald Shapely 19-month-old boy, he is well grown though I wouldn’t want him any taller. Balanced in angulations fore and aft, his chest is deep with enough infill and a prominent sternum. He is strong and level in topline with his tail set on high. He moved around the ring with pleasing side gait though just a little close coming and going.

OPEN DOG 2 (1)

1st Leech, Dr A C & Leech Mrs J A Lux Ch Mochras Mahlord Rupert JW Lots to appreciate on this typey 19-month-old. Fabulous, moderately domed head with well-defined occiput, his eyes are dark and his ears are set on low and have the correct texture. He is well constructed all through - his chest is deep and capacious, his is strong in top line with a short, muscular loin. I liked this boy’s rear, he has width to his thigh and second thigh with well bent stifles and strong, parallel hocks. Shown in tip top condition, he moved around the ring with verve. BD & BOS

VETERAN DOG 2 (1)

1st Leech, Dr A C & Leech Mrs J A Ch & Ir Ch Gavelkind Conquistador By Jamchala VW Distinguished 11-year-old boy, shown in wonderful condition and excellent coat. I loved his handsome head that is moderately domed and slightly greying, his ears are set correctly and nicely folded. Balanced in angulations fore and aft, he stands on good bone and is sturdy in body although I think he would look even better carrying a little less weight. His chest is deep with a prominent sternum; his ribs extend well back and are nicely rounded. He excelled on the move, using his powerful rear to drive around the ring, his tail set correctly and carried sickle like. BV

PUPPY BITCH 1

1st Allenby, Mrs Heidi & Allenby Miss Maisie Rangali Cookies and Kreme Delightfully confident 6-month-old bitch, she stands on super bone with neat, tight feet. Beautiful head with dark eyes that give her a sweet expression, she has strength to her slightly arched muzzle and strong dentition. She has a good length of neck that leads to a well-made front assembly with correct return of upper arm. Her ribs extend well back with a short, broad loin although she is just standing a little bum high at present. On the move, she maintained her shape and was true in all directions. A promising puppy. Sound mover around the ring but just a little close coming towards. Presented in a dense harsh coat.

OPEN BITCH 3 (1)

1st Thornton, Mrs Elizabeth & Leech Dr Antonia Ch Lux Ch Mochras Mahgaux JW What a quality, top draw 4-year-old bitch! She caught my eye when she entered the ring with her sound construction and beautiful presentation. Typical head of correct planes, her eyes are dark and have a wonderful playful twinkle. Her neck is strong and muscular and flows smoothly into a super front assembly, she stands on quality bone with the best of feet. Her topline is strong and firm, her ribs are nicely rounded and extent well back. On the move, she propelled herself around the ring using her broad, strong hindquarters and short, parallel hocks. Strong neck into a well-placed scapula, she has depth to her chest with her ribs nicely rounded and extending well back. Her rear quarters have width and with a good turn of stifle, she moved around the ring with purpose though she couldn’t match the drive of the winner.

VETERAN BITCH 1

1st Thornton, Mrs Elizabeth & Leech Dr Antonia Ch Mochras Mahcushla Ir J Ch Pretty 8-year-old bitch who certainly doesn’t look her age. She has a pleasing head shape with strength to her underjaw and correct dentition. Her muscular neck fits into well-made forequarters, she stands on good bone with strong pasterns and good feet.
