Breed: Irish Red & White Setter

Critique Irish Red and White Setters,

Welsh Kennel Club 2026

A truly varied entry. The best specimen were outstanding, but on the other side of the coin I also had to withhold.

Veteran Dog (2,1)

1ST Sh Ch Daithi Shadow Dog with Ferngate (Imp Pol) (Mrs A B & Mr S H Catton & Cook),

This dog truly represents what this breed is about. He is wonderfully unspoiled, as sound as a bell and you could easily see him doing a days work. Strong masculine head, I would not want it any stronger. Pleasing ear set. Strong neck moderately long with an attractive nape and well set into shoulder. Excellent return of upper arm. Excellent topline. OK tailset. Well angulated behind. The best of legs and feet. His coat is not his best feature as it is somewhat curly and could be even whiter in his white. Brilliant red. But it in movement that he truly excellent, as sound as a bell, very well co-ordinated and with strength and drive. CC & BOB and Best Veteran.

Puppy Dog (2,1)

1ST Alanea Pennine Way (Mrs A Tattersall)

At ten months old, this is a very soundly constructed dog with a brilliant front, strong and sturdy. Still not fully grown, he is already very balanced and sound as a bell. Head under development, masculine. A bit high ear-set. Strong neck, well set into shoulder. Excellent topline, croup and tailset. Balanced angulation behind. Strong bone. Firm feet. He moved very well indeed from all angles, impressive for one so young. Best Puppy

Junior Dog (1)

1ST Alanea Pennine Way (Mrs A Tattersall)

Limit Dog (2)

1ST Coolfin Clancy with Ferngate (Mrs A B & Mr S H & Miss P Catton & Cook & Jakins)

A very well constructed dog with absolutely outstanding movement when we managed to get him to trot and not pace. Strong and masculine head, could do with some less stop and some more refinement of skull. Excellent neck, well set into shoulder. Excellent return of upper arm. Excellent topline, strong and with a an ever so slight arch from his strong muscling. Very good tailset. Well angulated behind. Excellent bone. Lovely coat and colour. At best he moved with such strength, balance and footfall that I was truly impressed, but it was hard work getting there. resCC

2ND Roanjora Cremant Bourgogne Intro Ex (Mrs S J Jones)

A well proportioned dog, not quite as masculine. I preferred his head to the winner. Neck could be longer and is sharply set as his shoulders are not his fortune. Needs more forechest and layback of upper arm. Excellent topline and tailset. Balanced angulation behind. Very good coat, excellent colour. Moved light on his feet and with an attractive cadence to his movement.

Open Dog (4,1)

1ST Sh Ch Daithi Shadow Dog with Ferngate (Imp Pol) (Mrs A B & Mr S H Catton & Cook)

2ND Sh Ch Gilliegrae So Berry Excited JW (Mr G J & Mrs G A Hart)

A young dog, his best is yet to come, but he is attractive in most aspects. Typical masculine head without coarseness. Strong neck, well set into shoulder. Good forechest and layback of upper arm. Firm topline, at this time a little high behind. Strong things. Moderately angulated behind. He moved cleanly coming and going, relatively well from the side, but not like the winner.

3RD Rhoswendale Game Is On Again for Viszaset (Imp Fin) (Mr S & Mrs M & Miss N Martin & Martin & Green)

Special Beginners (2)

1ST Roanjora Cremant Bourgogne Intro Ex (Mrs S J Jones)

2ND Aislingwood Amber Fields (Mrs K Clark)

A seven months old bitch, at this time she is very elegant, even rather racey in her overall appearance. She has a refined feminine head. Needs to muscle up in her neck. Moderate, balanced angulation both ends. Firm topline, quite good tailset. She moved light on her feet, very good from behind, Ok in front. Her lack of coat contributed to her overly elegant look today.

Veteran Bitch (1)

1ST Sh Ch Zendarric It's A Kind of Magic Within Wroxham JW (Mrs E E Walker)

Quality bitch, at ten year old, she is in very good condition and enjoyed her day out. She has a very typical head and expression, well set ears. Medium neck, well set into shoulder. Excellent forechest and upper arm. Excellent firm topline, well set tail, well angulated behind. She could do with tighter feet. She moved very well from the side and in front, acceptable from behind. Lovely colour and a good coat. CC

 Minor Puppy Bitch (1)

1ST Aislingwood Amber Fields (Mrs K Clark)

Puppy Bitch (1)

1ST Alanea Summer Legacy (Mrs A Tattersall)

Very attractive feminine bitch of excellent proportions and type. Typical head, feminine and with very pleasing profile. Very good neck, well set into shoulder, well angulated in upper arm. Excellent topline. Well bodied for her age. Well set and carried tail. Strong thighs. She moved light on her feet, well synchronized, sound coming and going. Not in a good coat on the day.

Junior Bitch (1)

1ST Alanea Summer Legacy (Mrs A Tattersall)

Post Graduate Bitch (1)

1ST Withheld

2ND Clonaghadoo Fantasia of Dreamcymru (IKC) (Miss Kelly Williams)

A very feminine bitch, far too refined and lacking substance all over. Long cast refined head, too long in her muzzle for balance. Rather thin in neck, upright in shoulder. Very good topline. Falls away too much over the croup. Needs more self confidence. Beautiful colour; pearl white with bright red. A rather unstable mover from all angles.

Limit Bitch (2,1)

1ST Coolfin The Ecstasy of Gold at Caradilis (Ms D & Mr A O’kelly & Hancock)

Sound and functional bitch, well constructed in her angulation. A bit lethargic in her expression, I would not want any more lips. Excellent ears. Very good rise of neck with an attractive nape. Excellent lay-back of shoulder and upper arm. She makes a little more arch of loin than ideal standing. Well muscled hindquarters. Well set tail. She is a sound and functional mover, especially impressive from the side and then also relaxes in her topline. resCC
