City Of Birmingham Canine Association – 6th September 2026

SPANIEL (COCKER)

I would like to thank the exhibitors for their numerous entries. While I was incredibly pleased with my main winners, I was concerned by the lack of consistency across many of the classes, which made placing the dogs in some of the classes quite challenging. From dippy toplines, variation in sizes to structural imbalances in leg length, short necks, upright shoulders, short upper arms, incorrect angles which affects movement and forward reach, the breed's type is currently varied and fragmented. It is heartbreaking to see such a decline in overall depth of quality compared to when I first entered the breed. No bad mouths noticed.

However, hope is far from lost. While many foundational names who have left their mark in this breed are sadly no longer with us, a dedicated handful of clever breeders continue to produce excellent, correct type. These stalwarts are deeply passionate, highly approachable, and ready to share their knowledge. I strongly encourage newcomers to look past any intimidation and reach out to them for advice—their mentorship is invaluable for steering our lovely breed back to its peak.
