MANCHESTER CH SHOW

JANUARY 2026

SCOTTISH TERRIERS

Many thanks to the Manchester committee for inviting me to judge what was, for me, a much anticipated appointment. I felt it a great honour to judge Scottish Terriers and I was very grateful for an excellent entry in terms of both quantity and quality. I must congratulate the exhibitors, not only for their sportsmanship but for their patience in waiting until later in the day as I had other breeds prior to the commencement of the Scottish Terriers. I was encouraged that I found no recurring faults and overall, despite this being the show where most trimmed terriers start to be prepared for Crufts, coats were excellent and presentation was very good. I thought my DCC and my BCC winners outstanding examples and could win anywhere. I was delighted to see my BOB win the Group under a Scottish Terrier specialist.

SBD 3(1)

1. Tilley’s Fredrick Oriono Kerai. Pleasing dog to start the day. He is of good size and his overall make and shape makes for a typical silhouette of the breed. He has a good length of head with adequate width. His skull to foreface proportions are correct, has a good dark eye correctly shaped, and with neat ears well placed. Muscular neck of adequate length set into well placed shoulders. Won this class on his front assembly, excellent rib and his overall substance. His chest is more correctly slung between his forelegs than the 2nd placed dog. Good hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Tail correctly set. I would like his topline a little stronger to be critical. Moved well. 2. Darragh/Faith’s Celmareva Zero to Hero. Pleasing headpiece of good length and with typical eye shape and good neat ears. His head proportions are correct. He is slightly longer cast than the 1st placed dog and overall, I would prefer a little more substance to him. He has a good tail set which is strong at the root. In a good harsh jacket with enough undercoat. Moved well with drive from the rear.

1. Maidment’s Berrybreeze Wisdom. This 18 month old black dog appealed to me from the moment he came into the ring. He has a certain ring presence, came in full of himself, stacked himself correctly and made me look at him. He has an abundance of qualities. The first you come to is his head which is of excellent length yet is clean through the back skull and of sufficient width. He has a correct skull to foreface ratio and a correct slight stop without being too deep. He has a beautiful eye which is keen, dark and correctly placed and neat ears of correct texture which he uses well. This dog excels in his substance and overall construction. Has a good neck of sufficient strength into excellent long sloping shoulders. Good strong brisket, which was a feature where some were lacked today. Lovely strong boned forelegs which are straight and good feet under his furnishings. Has good width of chest and is well slung, with enough ground clearance. Excellent rib and lovely short strong muscular loin. Typical top-line thick and well set tail and he excels in the rear with beautiful hindquarters and big substantial rump. Gave the overall impression of a substantial dog with a short back and he was exactly what I was looking for. He moved well, correctly in front and with drive from the rear. Despite him being in a junior class I had no hesitation in walking down the line to award him the DCC in good company, although I was told later he was already made up on the new system, but I was delighted to award him his traditional 3rd challenge certificate. I wish him well.2. Ashworth’s Lochgems Sole Sensation for Naviba. Another nice promising junior who was unlucky to meet 1 in such excellent condition. He is another dog of excellent type. I found him not quite as clean in back skull as the winner, but he has a good head of adequate length. Neat dark eye and well placed small ear. Good neck. Correct front assembly with good width in the chest and of excellent bone with nice tight foot. He is a fraction longer than the 1st placed dog but still exhibits good rib and has an excellent rear. He moved very well and another who was put down very well. Should do well. 3. Darragh/Faith’s Celmareva Zero to Hero.

PGD 8(1)

Not an easy class to sort out. 1. Chapman/Tyler’s Berrybreeze Soul Man. A very typey young dog who pleased me for overall size, shape and symmetry. He has a good head of good width and sufficient strength through the foreface. Neat dark eye and well placed ear. He won here over the 2nd placed dog and the others in the class with his excellent top-line which is strong and held on the move. Good rib, strong loin, good stern, plenty behind the tail. In good coat and well put down.

2. Tilley’s Oriono Kerai. Winner of SBD. 3. Miller/Hoare’s Glenaffric Hidden Magic.

1. Harrison-Brown/Norton’s Divadell Who’s The Man. Pleasing dog who I liked for his overall make and shape. He has a pleasing head although to be hypercritical I would like him a little cleaner in the back skull. His head is of sufficient width and he has a well placed dark eye. He has strength through the foreface. Good strong neck into well laid shoulders. Typical width in chest and his chest is well slung through the forelegs. Well ribbed, short loin, good hindquarters. Moved with drive but I would like to see a little more reach in front action. He was another in good coat today. 2. Nixon’s Tout Nouveau Beau Du Clan Des Petits Colonels. Nice dog. Of good size and presents a nice overall outline. Another who has length of head although I preferred the overall head and expression on 1. This dog has a slightly rounder eye than is my preference. Good neck into well placed shoulders. Well boned. Excellent spring of rib. Good top-line. Good thick tail which is correct and carried well. Nice hindquarters with good big wide buttock. Deep through the thigh and well bent through the stifle.

1. Kenny Marriott/Marriott’s Heath Hill Kingly Step to Millingford (imp JPN). This is a very nice dog who I see is an import from Japan. He has a most beautiful head which is of good overall length and he has good strength to the foreface. Lovely dark eye. Well set, well used, fine ears. Pleasing through the neck and shoulder. Good front. Well ribbed. He was put down in excellent coat. His hindquarters are powerful and he uses them well. Presentation here was excellent. I felt he could be slightly stronger in his top-line which gave him a disadvantage over the junior dog. I hear that this was his 8th RDCC. This dog really deserves to carry his title and I hope that it is not to far away. RDCC. 2. Coley’s Ch. Evingbriar Bandsman Becscott. A quality dog who rightly holds his title. I liked him for his substance, make and shape. He is balanced. He has a lovely head and expression. He has a correct front assembly. However, his front action could be a little tidier. Moves well from the rear. In good hard jacket and good condition. 3. Bourgeois’ Fr/Hr/Lux/Int Ch/Slo Ch. Power Ranger Dominoscots.

SBB 3(1)

1. Redfern’s Eimahan’s Leap of Faith. Nice quality bitch. She won here on her substance and overall sturdiness. Pleasing head and expression. Typical front. Of excellent strong bone and good tight foot. Well ribbed. Correct hindquarters. Well carried tail. For me she could be a fraction shorter. 2. England/Francis’ Gwilym Llanragles She’s The One. Brindle bitch who is promising but has some maturing and filling out to do. Essential shape is there. She has a good head and expression. Moved soundly. Jacket is harsh.

PB 2(1)

1. England/Francis’ Llanragles She’s The One. Repeat. Second in SBB.

JB 2(0)

1. Le Pelletier’s Jean William Very Wonderful Vulcania Della Roccacia Di Modigli. Pleasing head of good length. Has width to the skull and good strength of foreface. Well placed ears. Good through the neck and shoulder. Well ribbed and short strong loin. In excellent harsh top jacket and good undercoat. A little overdone behind for me, would prefer her angulation a little more moderate and would prefer a slightly better top-line. Moved well in front. 2. England/Francis’ Llanragles She’s The One. Second in SBB.

PGB 6(1)

This was an interesting class with a number bitches of differing types. 1. Kirk-Gellatly’s Kingsview Just Eleanor. This bitch I rate highly. She stood out as a compact, short backed bitch of good size, moderate without being excessive in any way. She has a beautiful headpiece with long skull and foreface giving her that overall impression of as long head for a short dog. She has a dark eye. She has neat ears which are well placed. She is good through the neck which is muscular and reaches to well placed shoulders. She is well boned in the front and her chest is of good depth and width. She is correctly slung and has a strong top-line and a well set tail which she uses well. Plenty behind the tail and a good strong rear. Well put down. She moved with good footfall both fore and aft. I thought her quite lovely and had no hesitation in awarding her the RBCC, which I hear was her 2nd. I wish her well for her future. 2. Hoare’s Glenaffric Starlit Magic. A nice brindle bitch of quality. She has a pleasing head and expression. Is good through the neck and shoulder and has a typical front assembly. Longer cast than the 1st bitch but nevertheless is not unbalanced. She has a lot of coat on her front and rear which is a little softer than my preference, this gives her the impression of being even longer and a little judicious trimming might improve the overall picture. She has a good rear which she uses well on the move. 3. Norton’s Divadell Harleyquinn JW.

1. Knight/Poolton’s Russalan Martha Rosa JW. This is a nice bitch and it was very close between 1 and 2 in limit bitch today. Two very smart bitches and both very typical and both with many qualities to admire. The winner here had the edge on overall length of head and was cleaner through the neck than the 2nd placed bitch. 2. Maidment’s Berrybreeze She’s The One. This bitch has substance and is of excellent bone and overall construction. In good jacket and moved well. 3. Hoare’s Glenaffric Starlit Magic.

OB 7(1)

1. Eggert’s Ch. Invercrest Dark Intrigue via Macblain. This bitch was an absolute stand-out for me. I was surprised to see her here having recently seen her in Orlando where I awarded her the breed over a myriad of outstanding Scottish Terriers. On that occasion she went on to win the Group at the Tampa Bay Terrier Club. Today I saw nothing here to change my opinion on her and I rate her as an outstanding example of the breed. Going over her she is very feminine but does not give an inch in substance and bone. This bitch has an excellent length of head. Her skull to muzzle ratios are correct. She has width to her skull yet it still appears lean and long for her overall size. She has a very keen dark eyes of correct shape which help to give her that varminty expression which is so desired. She has neat small ears which she uses well at all times. Excellent dentition. Strength through the foreface, however as mentioned, without giving away any femininity. Good strong neck into well placed shoulders. Her front assembly is typical. She has width to her front and has excellent bone. She has rib, a level top-line and tail on top. There is enough behind the tail. She has wonderful hind angulation and has good width to her thigh. She is in a tighter coat than is my personal preference, but her coat is of such harsh texture it is very pleasing to the hand. She won here with quite some to spare. I really loved her. BCC and annexed BOB over an excellent young dog. I was pleased to see her put up an excellent performance in the Group and more delighted that she won, what in my opinion, was a very strong Terrier Group and under a Scottish Terrier expert in Mr David Guy. Congratulations. 2. Kenny Marriott’s Millingford Out of The Blue. A very smart black bitch who was unlucky to meet the 1st bitch in such good form. Another quality bitch who deserves to carry her title. Another with good head of excellent length. Well made throughout with a good strong rear which she uses on the move. Moved very well. Unfortunately, she had had enough by the challenge for the RCC and lost out to the younger classes however I wish her well. 3. Maidment’s Quaint Sabayon (imp FIN).
