CITY OF BIRMINGHAM CHAMPIONSHIP DOG SHOW

Show Results – Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Judged by – Mrs Janet Higgins (Acrestaf)

I would like to thank the City of Birmingham committee for inviting me to judge Staffordshire Bull Terriers at this lovely, very well run show. It was a privilege and a real pleasure and I would like to thank all exhibitors for bringing their much loved dogs for my opinion. There were plenty of times when I was spoiled for choice and the chosen few could well meet up and be placed differently in months to come but what a good situation to be in. Many thanks to my stewards on the day who were friendly, efficient and very supportive – I hope we meet again in another ring.

Class 2583 – Special Beginners Dog1st

1st Gibson’s Staffordsmax Sucker Punch. Standard Brindle dog - good clean head proportions, dark eyes, neat ears, correct dentition. Well balanced with nice length of neck, good front and angulation, tail carried well. Moved well. 3rd place in Special Beginners Group

2nd Wilkie’s Geordiestaff Toon Army at Teamposse. Nicely put together dog with well shaped head, dark eyes and keen expression. A little cobbier than 1 but moved and handled well.

3rd Kimberley & McCafferty’s Wonderstaff this Boy. Black brindle – standard dog sharing many of the attributes of 2 but preferred movement of 1.

Class 2584 – Veteran Dog

1st Manito’s Catstaff’s Used To. He may be seven and a half years old, but this black brindle dog showed himself off like one half his age! Fits the standard in every respect, looked as though he was thoroughly enjoying himself and really powered round the ring. He challenged hard for top honours. Best Veteran in Breed.

Class 2585 – Minor Puppy Dog

1st Stanway’s Waystaff William Conquerer. This seven month old red & white pied dog was very well developed for his age. Already sporting a really strong head, neat ears used to good effect, dark eyes and an expression that follows you around. Good straight front, plenty of bone and ribs already well sprung. Lovely angulation/moved with strength and drive. Best Puppy Dog / Best Puppy in Breed

2nd Hamilton & Murphy’s Shawrigg Definitely Maybe. Another youngster that really caught my eye – also a red/white pied. Not as well developed as 1 but with good clean head proportions and overall balance. Moved well holding topline. Very close decision.

3rd Hailey’s Gazstaffs the Gambler. This black brindle lad didn’t make this decision an easy one. Good head, ears and dark round eyes. Nicely proportioned body and moved well but didn’t show himself off as well as 3.

Class 2586 – Puppy Dog

1st Mayren & Paige’s Dusklight Polar Express from Fergiestaffs . Standard nine month old lad – well put together with well defined head, good keen expression and good mouth. Showed and handled well for his owner.

Class 2587 – Junior Dog

1st Davis & Davis’ Sharmara Fidelius Charm. Smart and well developed mahogany brindle with well defined head and stop, good dentition, clean lipped. Straight on the front, ample rib for heart and lungs, good angulation and fit. Moved and handled very well.

2nd McDermott & Arntzen’s Proudstaff Day Tripper. Standard Black brindle dog with strong head of correct proportions, rose ears and round, dark eyes. No exaggerations in angulation; not quite as substantial as 1. Moved well and held topline. Close decision.

3rd Gibson’s Staffordsmax Dynamite. Brindle/white standard dog with pleasing head shape, dark round eyes, neat ears, good length of neck and overall construction. Balance and movement demonstrated in movement. Pushed for 2nd – on another day these three could easily change places.

Class 2588 – Yearling Dog

1st Seymour’s Dekayro’s Eye of the Tiger. Very tidy black bridle dog – fits the standard with strong defined head, correct skull to muzzle proportions and deep stop. Bite and teeth as they should be. His balance, conformation and balance just finished the picture for me. Moved freely round the ring holding topline.

2nd Banner’s Geordiestaff Hadaway Pet. Showy red and white dog with a lot going for him. Head strong and deep through, correct mouth, dentition and defined cheek bumps. Good front, well laid shoulders, fit and went round the ring with drive and enthusiasm. Head on 1 had slight advantage.

3rd Miller’s Skyland Tillkum Jw. This black brindle and white dog has a clean shapely head, neat ears, dark eyes and appealing expression. Adequate brisket and substance, handled well for his owner; movement not quite as free as 2.

Class 2589 – Graduate Dog

1st Buchan’s Happystaff Hakuna Matata. Brindle dog full of Stafford ‘Look at me’ attitude! Looked very confident in the ring and showed off his really neat ears, dark round eyes and strong clean head with correct mouth with aplomb. Good front and ample brisket, well angulated and muscled from front to rear. Went around the ring freely and with drive.

2nd Gonzalez and Hirst’s Dusk Light Small Town Boy at Maskalon. Standard Red/White pied dog with clean, strong head. Dark eyes with dark rims, neat ears and correct mouth and teeth. Shown in good, fit condition and went well around the ring, pump handle style tail carried correctly - held topline. 1 was very slightly fitter.

3rd Wilkie’s Geordiestaff Toon Army at Teamposse – see 2nd in Class 2583

Class 2590 – Post Graduate Dog

1st Walsh & Lloyds’s Geordiestoon Defiant Boy for Weorc Jw. Black brindle and white stylish and eye-catching dog with white markings on chest and legs. Fits the standard from end to end without any exaggerations – lovely angulation and confirmation. Beautiful, strong head with neat ears and dark, round eyes and correct dentition and bite. Moved with drive and determination. Lovely reach of neck to well placed shoulders, well sprung ribs, short coupled and strong rear end that powered him around the ring. This dog should have a great future! RDCC

2nd Jurascheck & Humphries’ Riennastaff Juggernaut. Strong black brindle dog with well defined head of correct proportions – lovely ears, good dark eyes and pleasing expression. Ample brisket, good lay of shoulders, and plenty of bone and substance. Another superb example of our beloved SBT. It was a case of nit-picking here and I am hard pushed to say why I placed these two as I did but in the end it was the fact that 1 moved a little more freely on the day.

3rd Gillespie-Wren & Boulton’s Dusklight White Heat. White pied standard topsize dog with plenty of head, dark eyes and rims, rose ears and correct mouth/dentition. Another dog of substance with ample bone. Well put together and shown fit. Moved and handled well but preferred the balance on 2.

Class No. 2591 – Limit Dog

1st Hall’s Geordiestaff Local Hero Jw. Standard black brindle lad with strength and substance but no exaggerations. Well muscled and fit, this young man had a powerful head, good mouth and correct teeth, dark/round eyes and nice neat ears. Straight front, well sprung ribs, level topline and well muscled rear to drive him around the ring – nice to watch.

2nd Boulton & Hayton’s Dusklight See Me Now. Well muscled white/black pied dog – brought into the ring in really fit condition. Good defined head, dark eyes, tidy ears and good mouth. Lovely outline – nothing exaggerated – well sprung ribs, and well muscled rear. Moved and handled well but 1 was ahead on points.

3rd Shepherd’s Harlivstaff Captain Coady. Strong and well proportioned red/white dog. Lovely head shape, neat ears and dark round eyes producing an alert expression. Correct mouth and teeth. Good reach of neck to well laid shoulders,

Straight front, well sprung ribs, well muscled hindquarters. In this instance movement was not as good as 2.

Class No. 2592 – Open Dog

1st Sheldon’s’ Ch Kamaristaffs Royal Ransom at Bowtman Jw. A fine example of a Stafford – black brindle dog with ample bone and substance in a body that fits the breed standard. Sculpted head with good depth and breadth of skull and correct skull to muzzle proportions. Dark eyes and rose ears, prominent cheek bones and correct mouth. Nice reach of neck, straight front and deep brisket. Well laid shoulders, plenty of rib and well muscled hindquarters. Moved well around the ring. I had hoped that I would see another dog to beat this one but that didn’t happen! DCC

2nd Stanways’ Waystaff Strikes Mayhem. Red and White pied dog – well balanced standard lad with strong head, powerful jaw, good ears and dark eyes and rims. Pleasing outline – well muscled, body with good bone, spring of rib and strong hindquarters. 1 just showed himself to better advantage.

3rd Jennings’ Elitebull Valentine – red and white standard dog, strong well defined head, tidy ears, dark/round eyes, good overall conformation and balance overall. Lovely tight feet. Shown in good condition. 2 took it on movement.

2nd Wilie’s Geordiestaff Toon Army at Teamposse – see Graduate Dog critique for this dog

Class No. 2594 – Special Beginners Bitch

1st Whitney’s Vidarstaff Princess Skadi – Eleven month old standard Red and white bitch with a well shaped head, dark eyes, neat ears and correct mouth. Straight front, nice lay of shoulders and overall proportions for age. Lovely on the move.

2nd Petts’ Arkenstaff She’s the One at Brydonstaff – Different proposition from 1 being a little longer in the leg and not quite so substantial but she sported a strong, shapely feminine head. Mouth and teeth OK , dark round eyes and tidy ears gave a lovely expression. Behaved well on the move but 1 took it on drive for me.

3rd Gold’s Wellsstaffs Take a Bow at Darramior – Black brindle/white dog coming up to 2 years. Head proportions good, dentition correction, another girl with dark eyes and appealing expression. Just preferred the head of 2.

Class No. 2595 - Veteran Bitch

1st Howard’s Ch Matrixstaffs Black Beauty – This girl can still catch my eye at 7 years old as she did as a youngster when we competed together before lockdown! Lovely balance and overall outline, strong head with good muzzle to skull (still deep through and clean lipped), the darkest of eyes and rose ears. Not lost the body either although we all get a little softer as we reach latter years. Showed her movement off well. No hesitation awarding BVB –and much deserved.

2nd Funnell’s Powerpack Alura Finvarra JW – Black brindle lady with several years’ experience of showing that shows in her ring presence. Lighter build than 1 but still has a well proportioned and feminine head with correct mouth and teeth, and the expression that comes from dark eyes and neat ears and showed well for her owner but 1 just pipped her at the post on movement.

3rd Buchan’s Could it be Magic – at twelve and a half years old you can be forgiven for not being so svelt as you were but overall this girl still had a good head and mouth and strutted her stuff well although 2 had the stronger head.

Class No. 2596 – Minor Puppy Bitch

1st Stanway’s Waystaff Love Conquers All – This eight month old white/red pied girl is well developed, sporting a very mature outline and well-boned body for her age. Really strong head, deep through with correct muzzle to skull proportions, dark eyes and neat eyes and an alert and playful expression. Plenty of bone, straight front, good neck length and lay of shoulders. Short coupled with good rear end angulation giving a lovely parallel movement. BPB

2nd Parry’s Saxstaff la Diosa – Another red/white pied girl. Although not quite as well developed as 1 this standard puppy has a lovely confirmation and fits the standard well with a very feminine head and correct, clean mouth. Dark round eyes support neat ears to give her the desired alert expression. Well bodied and moved well and all I can say is that on another day these girls could swap places.

3rd Hudson’s Legacy Staffords Angel from Heaven at Canisstaff – Nine months old this girl has everything you would expect at her age with a pleasing head, tidy ears, dark round eyes and correct mouth and teeth. Nicely angulated, moved well and behaved in an exemplary fashion for her owner - she has plenty of time to develop to her full potential.

Class 2597 – Puppy Bitch

1st Jackson’s Jackabyte Paradoxe Pria – What a classy black brindle girl! At eleven months of age she has a beautifully proportioned head, the deepest of dark, round eyes and the neatest of ears. Lovely length of neck melting into her well laid back shoulders. Depth of brisket and spring of rib just right for age, lovely rear angulation, good tail carriage and she moved like a little train around the ring never missing a step, full of confidence and looking as though she was really enjoying herself. Very difficult decision for BPB – but I’m sure this girl will also go far.

2nd Simpson’s Simpstaff The Best of You – Again a girl of nearly eleven months with many of the attributes of 1, this very pretty girl has a feminine headpiece with everything meeting the standard. Well angulated and nicely boned with good conformation; 1 just taking it on ring presence.

3rd Constant’s Battlestaff Pickle – Black brindle and white – standard nine month old bitch with nice head proportions, good mouth, alert expression helped by neat ears and dark eyes, sufficient bone and correct angulation for age – good on the eye but met two stronger adversaries today.

Class 2598 – Junior Bitch

1st Hirst & Bibby’s – Taraeil Amazing Gracel – at just fourteen months this bitch met the breed standard with added class.

Strong but feminine head with good stop, skull to muzzle proportions, cheek muscles, dark round eyes and rose ears giving her a classic Stafford expression. Lovely body with straight front, depth of brisket and plenty of room for heart and lungs with the rest of her conformation following suit. Showed in good condition and moved freely.

2nd Plumstead – Jazostaffs Cotswold Gem. Another good example of the breed, this black brindle girl worked hard to show herself off to her best. Fits standard with correct mouth/teeth, well proportioned head and skull to muzzle ratio topped off with rose ears used to best effect. Neck led into good shoulder placement, well sprung ribs, tight feet and topline held on the move. Overall balance of 1 made the decision for me.

3rd Gibson’s Staffordsmax The Hype – it is lovely to see more brindles around and this girl’s tiger brindle markings are something else. Good fit to the standard, well shaped head in terms of proportions, neat ears, sufficient bone, good spring of rib and strong hindquarters. Moved around the ring well. Very close decision but 2 had it on feet.

Class 2599 – Yearling Bitch

1st Mills & Green’s Milarkebull Eleven JW – Black brindle young lady is a nice package with strength of head, good stop, and cheek muscles. Mouth and dentition fine, tight lips and dark eyes. Alert expression and plenty of presence in the ring. Well bodied, no exaggerations, exhibited in good condition - showed herself of well when she moved around the ring.

2nd Whitney’s Vidarstaff Princess Skadi - see critique under Special Beginners Bitch

3rd Ghynn’s Tillcarr Fire Fever – White and red pied with smart markings; nicely put together standard bitch. Good head – skull deep through, clean and correct skull to muzzle proportions – mouth and teeth fine. Sufficient bone, well sprung ribs and strong hindquarters.

Class 2600 – Graduate Bitch

1st Fry & McGeachan’s Brockmar Dream On. This black brindle girl’s head had plenty of strength but combined with her prettiness there was no mistaking her for a male! Clean lipped – mouth and bite correct, dark eyes and lovely expression. Overall proportions, height and weight well within standard but still had the substance expected of a Stafford. Moved around the ring with enthusiasm and drive.

2nd O’Malley’s Thebelicious Te Amo Atlomstaffs. Red and white bitch – strong in body with straight front, good depth of brisket and reach of neck. Good angulation front and rear and nice tuck-up in loin. Not quite so strong in the head but proportionate; good teeth, clean mouth, neat ears. Not quite the drive on the move as displayed by 1.

3rd Ghinn’s Tillcar Fire Fever. Pretty bitch but built on a smaller scale than the competition. They say that size isn’t everything and that was true here because this girl had plenty going for her in terms of conformation and angulation along with adequate strength/depth of head, and alert expression from dark eyes and tidy ears.

Class 2601 – Post Graduate Bitch

1st Matthews’ Janjoma Hearts Desire. This girl really took my eye. With a classic Stafford head in terms of shape, depth and breadth, clean lipped, correct dentition and bite and strong jaw. Dark eyes and neat rose ears gave a great alert expression. Lovely off the front, plenty of bone, sufficient depth of brisket, short neck that flowed into well laid shoulders and level topline. Feminine, fit and moved well – just about everything the heart could desire. Was a strong contender in the challenge and have no doubt that she will do well in the future.

2nd Winrow & Greaves Jayneze Miss Attitude. Black brindle girl – Nice head shape, correct mouth and dentition, tidy ears and dark eyes, this girl was not so substantial as 1 with more length of leg and lighter in the loin. Straight front, no angular exaggerations, strong hindquarters. Lovely tight feet. Didn’t have the strength of 1.

3rd Stanway’s Waystaff Causing Mayhem. Strong red and white pied bitch – powerful head, correct mouth with correct muzzle to skull proportions but femininity clearly evident from her expression. Dark eyes and near ears evidenced her alertness. Moved freely.

Class 2602 – Limit Bitch

1st Jobson’s Pridesdale Little Fury. This stunning red bitch had me mesmerised from the moment she came into the ring. Her overall proportions were, for me, absolutely gorgeous and she fit the standard as if it had been made for her. Great head shape – deep through with breadth of skull and correct muzzle to skull measurement. Expressive dark eyes and neat rose ears, good depth of jaw. Lovely neck length flowing into well laid back shoulders. Good depth of brisket and straight front, plenty of rib to house lungs and heart and neat feet. Level topline, good tuck-up in loins, good tail carriage and strong rear hindquarters driving free movement around the ring that was a pleasure to behold. Fit as a butcher’s dog! Absolutely no hesitation in awarding BCC.

2nd Paterson’s Stormnoir Black Dahlia. Another beautiful girl – black brindle this time – who made a great impression on me in the ring. Very well put together with sufficient substance and bone, straight front, short neck adjoining well placed shoulders with no looseness. Lovely angulation overall and strong hindquarters to power movement. Very classy Stafford head shape with everything she should have – dark round eyes, little rose ears and correct mouth and dentition. Pushed hard for top honours but 1 just pipped her on movement.

3rd Ryan & Daly-Lees’ Berrystock All Tye’d Up at Rubericla. This girl was slightly more substantial than 2 with a head that has plenty of depth/breadth, very dark round eyes and a correct mouth/bite and large teeth. Good ear placement and muzzle to skull proportions. Straight front, well boned legs and good spring of rib – so plenty of space for heart and lungs. Good shoulder placement, strong rear end. Showed in good fit condition.

Class 2603 – Open Bitch

1st Rowe & South’s Ch Illori Constellation JW. At five years old this lovely black brindle girl came into the ring full of attitude and showed like a trooper. Good head and muzzle to skull proportions, correct dentition, clean mouth and good depth of jaw. Nice front, plenty of rib, good topline and strong hindquarters this lady was fighting fit with plenty of muscle and it was put to good use to drive her around the ring at a speed her handler did well to keep up with!!

2nd Boulton & Hayton’s Dusklight Del A Soul. White girl with a strong head, short foreface, good skull to muzzle proportion, correct dentition and bite. Neat ears and dark eyes gave a pleasant, alert expression. Good front, well boned legs, shoulders well laid back. Good spring of ribs, short coupled, strong hindquarters and well balanced overall. 1 took it on ring presence.

3rd Addison’s Ch Hammystaff Shape of You at Guyad JW. This deep red/white bitch had smart markings and was a lovely deep colour evidencing strong pigmention with black nails on feet. Good head shape and correct mouth, dentition and bite. Plenty of bone, good spring of ribs, strong rear end and no exaggerations. Preferred balance of 2.
