English Setter

I thoroughly enjoyed my first time awarding CCs in English Setters. I was a replacement judge and my thoughts are with the original judge, and hope she recovers quickly. I thank those exhibitors who attended regardless and appreciate their sportsmanship in accepting my placings. It was perhaps the hottest day of the year so far on a show day, and clearly dogs were affected, particularly in the males. As we were second in the ring, I tried to keep the dogs in the shade as judging progressed and also kept movement to a minimum. But bearing in mind these are gundogs, and a galloping breed at that, I did need to see enough to place. Just some general comments; I found more depth of quality in the bitches than the males, but I think that’s a normal trend in a lot of breeds. However, I thought the younger classes were filled with some promising stock which augurs well for the future. On movement, even making allowances for the heat, there were a couple of issues coming up consistently. Incorrect front movement and cases of crabbing were seen. With regards construction, watch steep croups and low tail sets as they really impact on the lovely setter profile when stacked and on the move, and front angulation needs watching. I found a couple of examples of misplaced teeth but no actual jaw issues. Temperaments were as expected with such a gentle loving breed, tails never stopped wagging, always guaranteed to make me smile. Thank you to my able stewards who worked tirelessly on such a long hot day, and the committee at WELKS for this opportunity.

VD (1,1)

MPD (1,0) 1 Williams’ Bournehouse Dream Away BP Cracking 8 month old tri. So correct in outline even at this young age. Gentle expression, correct proportions to head, occiput clearly defined. Balanced with an excellent forehand, depth and spring of rib. Nice feet and well boned. Looked good in profile movement, holding his topline on the move, using quarters well. I considered him for top honours but still puppyish in his front and hind movement as you would expect. Surely will get his title. Shortlisted in the Puppy Group, well done.

PD (3, 0) 1 Lawson’s Summerseve Cezanne Another very promising pup. 10 month tri. Presented so well in excellent coat and condition. Handsome head, enough muzzle to skull but wouldn’t want any less, smooth neck into well laid back shoulders. Tight feet, Strong pasterns, good bone. Very well muscled for one so young, good width across the quarters. Was the most together on the move here, moving sound and true. I predict a good future ahead. 2 Stephenson’s Bondgate Classical Drama Same age, but this blue boy not quite as mature and will take more time. Nice straight front and good depth coming in brisket. Very happy on the move but just not settled enough to really assess yet. In lovely coat and condition. 3 Howarth’s Samelen Enchanto at Moorbrook

JD (4,0)

1 Lawson’s Summerseve Cezanne Repeat. 2 McDowell’s Byedales Inspector Clueso 15 month tri. Really liked his handsome head, dark eyes, well defined stop. Oval skull and low set ears. Lengthy clean neck into correct shoulder angulation, but needs to develop in forechest. Moved well, holding topline but would prefer a less steep croup. Has time. 3 Taylor’s Kanietter Goldmandine of Tattay

YD (3,1) 1 Beasley’s Latjeata Jack's The Lad JW 21 Month blue, have judged before as a baby puppy and could see promise even then. Medium in size, very balanced outline. Masculine head, dreamy expression. Strong neck into good shoulders, good depth and enough spring of rib. Excellent topline and tailset. Moved true coming and going. Not as heavily coated as others on the day, but not a priority for me. 2 Szal’s Goldbirch Northern Jazz 2 and a half year old blue boy was larger all thru. Stronger in head, with correct proportions but slightly too much stop for my preference, good eye, and very low ear set. Would prefer a cleaner throat but lean, long neck into shoulders, level topline and well ribbed back. Would like more angulation in front and rear. Presented in lovely coat and condition.

PGD ( 8, 3) 1 Stewart & Quenby’s Tattersett Stolen Silver Very mature 3 year old blue I have done well by in the past and haven’t changed my views. Medium sized, elegant and clean in outline. Handsome head, with correct eye, stop, and not overdone in flew. Classy arch to neck into smooth shoulders, excellent forechest and depth thru brisket, well sprung ribs. Good bone and tight feet. Excellent topline and wide strong quarters with straight hocks. Moved out well and soundly. Considered for the RCC but just a bit proud of his tail today. 2 Warrington’s Culverwell Sundancer 2.5 year old orange, nice boy in a larger mold than 1st. Excellent masculine head properties, elegant in outline. The best of fronts with forechest and depth, level topline and good tailset. Moved out well. Just would prefer a little more angulation and width of second thigh behind to balance. 3 Carlin’s Ennydloc Yorkshire Image

LD (4, 0) 1 Pearce’s Westonfields Frenchrunner This 22 month old boy made my day. Elegant but masculine, his overall outline was what I was looking for. Handsome head, good stop, kind hazel eyes, width of skull correct, low ear set. Lean neck nice arch and smooth into shoulders. Well angled front and rear, good depth and forechest, well sprung ribs, level back and good to see such width across quarters and second thigh. Moved soundly away and back and really drove round the ring with purpose, reach in front and driving from behind, slashing tail correctly held with head high .Looked well in the group too despite the heat. Loved him and hope his title comes soon. DCC, his first, and BOB

2 Goutorbe’s Wansleydale Beekeeper at Redhara One I have judged before and looking really well here, maturing nicely. Medium size tri, Same age as the 1st placed dog, and on first look round thought he would be my winner. Such a beautiful head and expression, well made all through, good depth of chest, strong bone, and width thru quarters. Parallel movement away and back but just tending to slope away over hindquarters on the profile move today. Presented in glorious coat and condition.  3 Osman’s Bournehouse Sirocco over Marissolo JW

OD (6, 1)

1 Wilkinson-Sargeant’s Phenset Firestorm Really liked the overall masculine outline of this orange 6 year old. Fully mature, balanced front to rear, muzzle to skull proportions correct, lean long neck, excellent layback of shoulder, correct bone and tight feet. Level topline, nice run off to tail. Strong quarters, straight hocks and was the best mover in this class. Shown in good coat well feathered. RDCC

2 Bishop’s Sh Ch Dyrham Desert Storm 7 year old orange. Stronger headed boy, but very handsome and correctly balanced, oval skull, dark eyes and low earset. Best of feet and bone. Short in back and level topline, excellent quarters. Just not moving as well in the heat today.  3 Darley’s Severnsett Gold Sovereign

VB (2, 0) 1 Grimsdell’s Sh Ch Tattersett Dark Honey JW Classy and elegant orange girl, 8.5 years young and not looking it at all. Sweetest of heads and expression, defined occiput and well arched neck in to the best of fronts .Well sprung ribs and depth, short back, and good quarters. Clinched the RBCC on her sound movement and precise footfall, delighted to see her shortlisted in the strong Veteran Group, well done. BV

2 Beasley’s Wansleydale Amaretto at Latjeata VW Another very nice girl, tri, a little stronger all through but still very feminine. Elegant in outline showing balanced angles, excellent bone and feet. Level in topline. So much to like, just not as precise on the move today as 1st. In lovely coat and condition.

MPB (2, 0) 1 Tucker’s Walshaw Takes to The Stage 8 month litter sisters here, this blue girl is showing real promise, everything where it should be at this age. Feminine well balanced head, good finish to muzzle, earset, straight bone in legs and good feet. Moved happily and soundly for a puppy using her tail well. Should have a bright future ahead.

2 Tucker’s Walshaw Star Struck Tri, a bit over awed today lacking the confidence of her sister. Not quite the front at the moment but nice depth of brisket, short level back and good width across the quarters. Moved freely. Has plenty of time.

PB ( 1, 0) 1 Atyeo’s Taylor’s Samelen Ethereal Legacy 10 month old tri looking very mature and together even at this age. Liked her head and eye, depth thru body with well sprung ribs, level topline and correct tailset used when she moved, which was soundly with confidence, purpose and drive. Lovely coat and well presented. Just not quite the angulation in front as the MPD when challenging for BP.

JB (4, 1) 1 Rumble’s Bushbane Celtic Envoy Dreamy head and expression on this 13 month old orange. Very mature for age with plenty of substance but still feminine. Noted well angled front and rear with good width to quarters .Feet could be tighter but has time. Would prefer a less steep croup, but time to muscle up a bit further. Moved very well for her age to take this class.

2 Wynne-Evans’ Droveborough One Love Tri just out of puppy by a couple of weeks. Nice head with all the essentials, but would prefer she was cleaner in throat. Excellent neck into well angled shoulders and upper arm. Again, needs to tighten in feet, but well boned. Good depth and width through quarters with nice short hocks. Falling away a little at croup. Moved out well and with style. 3 Reid’s Diersett Moon of The Skies

YB (7, 2) 1 Beasley’s Latjeata Cup of Kindness JW 21 month old very feminine and typy orange. Sweetest of heads, but would prefer cleaner in throat. Good bone and nice tight feet. Elbows well let down and forechest evident. Balanced angulation with strong wide quarters. Level topline held and used her tail as she moved around the ring with style.

2 Kerr’s Latjeata Angel Blue Litter sister to the above, dark blue, but not quite as balanced at this stage. Nice head and eye colour, good finish to muzzle. Would prefer more layback of shoulder, but good depth in brisket. Short back and good wide quarters and short in hock. Moved freely. 3 Wynne-Evans’ Droveborough One Love

PGB (11, 2) 1 Whitehouse’s Teasmade Summer Evening (Imp Swe) Nice class. 4 year old pretty tri. Liked her typy clean outline. Feminine but with enough bone. Correct head, not overdone in any way with gentle expression. Angulation front and rear well balanced. Moved with style, head held high and slashing tail. 2 Syke’s Sharnyx Springtime at Daraquist 3 year old orange, nice head with soft expression low set ears. Good bone and tight feet. Covered the ground soundly and held topline in profile. Would prefer just a touch more angulation front and rear.  3 Pitts’ Wandsfell Keep Me Dreaming

LB (5, 2) 1 Stephenson’s Bournehouse in Dreams at Steeplow (Mr E & Mrs K E Stephenson) Not quite 2 yet, this elegant orange girl was on top form today. Presented such a typy outline, feminine but with enough strength for a galloping breed. Loved her head and melting expression, good finish to muzzle, lean with clearly defined stop and oval skull. Low set ears. Excellent angulation in front and shoulders well laid back. Straight bone and nice neat feet. Depth thru brisket and short back with strong loin. Well-muscled quarters and straight short hocks. Tail set correct. Moved so freely and covered a lot of ground, straight and true away and back and with style in profile. In excellent coat and condition. BCC, her second, and everything crossed she should get her title soon.

2 Phillips & Watkin’s Glenmaurangi Celeste 2.5 year old orange. Again, presented an elegant outline. Feminine sweet head and expression .Good depth and bone, a little upright in shoulder angle. Well sprung ribs and strong quarters. Looked really well going around. In excellent condition. 3 Felton Blyth’s Wansleydale Sky Angel at Felsett

OB (6, 2) 1 Seaman’s Mariglen Villanelle Not quite 4 years old tri. So correct and balanced, the more I looked, the better she got. So feminine, sweetest head, kind dark eyes. The best of necks flowed smoothly into well angled front. Excellent feet and bone, level topline and strong muscled quarters. Shown in top class coat and condition. Was a real contender in the challenge but just lost out on animation to the winners in the final runoff. It was very hot; I’m sure her day will come soon.

2 Grimsdell’s Sh Ch Tattersett Dark Amber 5 year old orange bitch out of my RBCC BV and you can see the family resemblance. Correct proportions in muzzle and skull, dark eyes, lowest of ear sets. Arch to lean long neck, good forehand angulation. Could be stronger in pasterns and tighter in feet. Moved with purpose and correct high head carriage on the move.  3 William’s Bournehouse Satin and Lace
