Blackpool & District Canine Society

Very many thanks to the Committee for the invitation to judge whippets at Blackpool championship show. It is always an honour and a privilege to award challenge certificates. Thanks also to my stewards Andrea Maltas and Christine Appleyard; you were brilliant, leaving me to concentrate on the dogs. The biggest thanks go to you, the exhibitors who entered your dogs for me to go over, I was truly impressed at the quality of both sexes and I am so pleased that the future of our beautiful breed looks rosy and is in good hands. The weather on the day was typically British. I was very grateful for my jacket in the morning judging dogs, one or two of which were shivering. Then the sun came out properly and it was so hot the table required a cloth as the black surface was too hot for the bitches’ feet. This may have adversely affected some exhibits. My critiques may have some repetition as I generally found what I was looking for in my winners. This was reflected in both my line ups which were top quality, and consistent in type.

Minor Puppy Dog (3,0)

1st Higginbottom’s Crosscop Deja Boo at Dawnsafon. Elegant, balanced and typey 7½ month old with a shapely outline once he relaxed. Good head and long neck into nicely laid shoulders with upper arm to match. Pleasing forechest and straight forearms. Good width of thigh to his hindquarters with well let down hocks, allowing him to move straight to and fro and with freedom in profile.

2nd Lloyd’s Rockin The Robin. Upstanding brindle, masculine and balanced also 7½ months old. Solid boy with good width all through. Nice expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders and strong pasterns, would just prefer a shade more return of upper arm. Good depth of chest and fill in leading to strong loin. Good width of thigh and well developed second thigh. He was a little unsettled today so didn’t show his best on the move.

3rd Windsor’s Wrennalla Sweet Ivory.

Puppy Dog (5,0)

1st BPD & BPIB Chaytor & Halliday’s Aarminias Made In Chelsea at Ramita. I was very taken with this super pale brindle, typey lad with quality and balance. Masculine yet elegant with a lovely head and best of necks into clean shoulders and good return of upper arm. Straight forearms and standing on well knuckled feet. Excellent topline with arch over his strong loin. A little unsettled on the move to and fro but saw enough to know he was sound. He really strode out in profile using his hindquarters well, holding his topline as he went. He put on a good show in the challenge and was considered for the DCC but just lost out to more mature dogs in their prime. Very pleased to award him BPD and BPIB, and to hear he went HPG3 later in the day, well done.

2nd Lloyd’s Penwincoed Pumpkin Pie. Lovely fawn boy with type and good overall shape. Good head with a soft expression, long neck into well laid shoulders and return of upper arm to match. Straight forearms with nicely sprung pasterns and neat feet. Good depth of chest leading to well muscled hindquarters. Moved straight out and back and really nicely in profile.

3rd Green & Ratcliffe’s Italo Disco Soulad by Arrodare (Imp CZE).

Junior Dog (7,0)

1st Dillon’s Citycroft Not My First Rodeo at Runforest JW. Quality, balanced and typey pale fawn only just out of puppy but quite mature for his age. Well muscled, masculine, yet elegant and balanced he has lots to like about him. Good head and long neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm placing his elbows well under. Straight forearms down to slightly sprung pasterns. Good depth and width to chest leading to shapely top and under lines. Good width to thigh allowing him to move straight away and back, he really scored in his profile movement. Another who I considered for the DCC but just lost out to mature dogs in their prime.

2nd Kemp’s Saraquele Smooth Criminal. Dark red brindle built on slightly shorter lines and carrying a little more condition than 1. Another masculine and typey lad. Nice head and expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders into good forechest and fill in. Good depth of chest under curvy topline with arch over his loin, Excellent width to his thigh and well developed second thigh. Moved straight to and fro and another who scored in profile movement. Just preferred the spring of pasterns of 1 today.

3rd Chippendale’s Southpoint Yes You with Chippwhipp (Imp PRT).

Yearling Dog (4,0)

1st & RDCC Luther & Buckland’s Tervanty Dragon Master at Bonnarfyfe JW. Top quality, masculine and balanced blue brindle with white trim whose elegant, smooth flowing lines and type really appealed to me. A stand out winner in his class. Super, curvy outline and arch over his loin all contributing to the overall quality picture. Excellent head and expression, long neck into the best of front construction with width and fill in. Straight forearms and slightly sprung pasterns, standing on neat feet. Well made and muscled hindquarters all finished off with a lovely skin and coat. On the move he was straight to and fro and floated round in profile hardly seeming to make any effort at all. He pushed hard for the DCC but was just out-performed in the challenge by my Limit Dog winner. However, very pleased to award him the RDCC.

2nd Hope’s Flerrow Rydings Romances. Red brindle and white lad built on shorter lines than 1. Masculine and typey. Nice head and expression, long neck into straight front and nicely sprung pasterns and neat feet. Shapely top and under lines leading to well muscled quarters. A little unsettled on the move and was a little close behind today, steady in profile. Just preferred the second thigh and tidier movement of 1.

Graduate Dog (6,1)

1st Beattie-Nash’s Railfield Rainstorm. Very typey, balanced blue brindle lad. Nice head and expression. Sloping shoulders with matching upper arm placing his elbow well under, down to nice forechest and straight front. Well sprung pasterns and standing on neat feet. Shapely underline running up from good depth of chest to nice width of thigh and well developed second thigh. Moved a little close behind today but showed nice paces in profile.

2nd Spicer’s Jothryn Muchacho. Masculine pale brindle built on longer lines than 1. Strong head and neck into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Another with a good depth of chest, width of thigh, and well developed second thigh. He also moved a little close behind today and showed nice paces in profile although just flattened a little in his topline on the move.

3rd Stuart’s Gentle Snip of Boskenna.

Post Graduate Dog (7,0)

1st Fleming’s Flerrow Watergrove Wonders. Nice masculine and typey pale brindle with white trim. Well muscled and balanced with a nice head and strong neck. Right amount of forechest with pleasing width in front and good fill in. Nicely sprung pasterns and standing on neat feet. Curvy top and under lines leading to well muscled hindquarters with good width and well developed second thigh. Moved straight to and fro and very nicely in profile putting his hindquarters to good use.

2nd Cahill & Timberlake’s Shine On Harvey Moon at Chipperlake. Classic and typey fawn with white trim. Masculine boy with a lovely head and expression, long neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Straight front with neat feet. Good depth of chest leading to curvy top and under lines and well made hindquarters with good width and excellent second thigh. Moved straight to and fro and nicely in profile. Just preferred the fill in of 1 today.

3rd Poole, Winkley-Balmer & Winkley’s Shulune Thrills N’ Spills for Edenwhip.

Mid Limit Dog (3,1)

1st Brooks’ Collooney For Your Eyes Only JW. Attractive, balanced and elegant pale brindle boy. Long, lean head that could just do with a little more strength to his underjaw, nice expression. Well laid shoulders with upper arm placing his elbows well under. Nice amount of forechest leading to straight front and strong pasterns. Good depth of chest giving a curvy underline along with a shapely topline. Moved straight out and back with slight convergence. Well muscled hindquarters allowed him to move very nicely in profile.

2nd Lloyd’s Penwincoed Mr Magoo JW. Well muscled fawn brindle with a nice head and expression, strong neck to nice forechest. Slightly sprung, strong pasterns and well let down hocks. Moved straight to and fro, and presented a much better picture on the move in profile. A nice lad just needing to relax today and show his best.

Limit Dog (11,1)

1st DCC & BOS Perkins & Van Der Schaaf’s Silkridge Black Caviar. I absolutely loved this striking, unexaggerated black with white trim dog. He is masculine and well muscled, yet still elegant and of superb quality, type and balance. Presented in beautiful condition, my hands just flowed over him, with a super curvy outline and perfect arch over his loin, held well on the move. He had everything I was looking for in a whippet built for his job and just ‘filled the eye’. I particularly liked his strong, slightly sprung pasterns, well knuckled, tight feet and his strong first and second thighs, all needed to propel him effortlessly around the ring. On the move he was foot perfect and excelled in his profile movement showing drive, with free and easy strides, enabling him to work economically all day long. In the challenge he turned up the style to take the DCC.

2nd Winkley-Balmer & Winkley’s Edenwhip Call Me At Night. Super quality, typey and balanced fawn masculine boy. Lovely head and expression, strong neck into clean shoulders and good return of upper arm with nice amount of forechest. Straight front, good depth of chest and well ribbed back to nice arch over the loin. A very nice dog but just preferred the movement of 1 today.

1st Hunter’s Ch Collooney Was Meant To Be at Sulahmara JW ShCEx OSW. Quality, elegant and balanced silver brindle with white trim oozing type. I judged this boy when he was just over a year old and thought highly of him then. He has certainly achieved his early potential, congratulations. Lovely head and expression, strong neck into well laid, clean shoulders with correct upper arm. Straight forearms, strong, slightly sprung pasterns and standing on neat feet. Lovely shape to his top and under lines leading to nicely muscled hindquarters with well let down hocks. His profile movement was smooth and effortless with hindquarters stepping well under him, but he took this class on his foot perfect to and fro movement. Another that was considered for the DCC.

2nd Winkley-Balmer & Poole’s Ch Edenwhip Can I Be Him. Super fawn and white trim with quality, type and balance. Well muscled with a lovely head and expression. Long neck to nice forechest and well constructed forequarters. Straight front and good underline leading to strong hindquarters excellent width of thigh and well developed second thigh. This boy really excelled in his profile movement, he just floats around the ring pushed hard for this class, just preferred the topline and to and fro movement of 1.

3rd Poole, Morris & Waddell’s Falconcrag Match Maker at Crosscop.

Veteran Dog (4,0)

1st & BVD Price’s Ch Wheelspin Silver Shadow among Silkdance JW VW. Classic fawn and white trim just coming up to 9 years old. Well balanced with type and quality. Strong neck into well constructed forequarters, straight forearms and slightly sprung pasterns. Still showing a good tuck up and strength to his hindquarters with good width of thigh. Absolutely sound on the move out and back and moved well in profile.

2nd Myers & Pilkington’s Supeta’s Show And Tell Astrazone. Very nice red brindle parti colour with type and quality, built on slightly shorter lines than 1. Good head and expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders with upper arm to match placing his elbows under his withers. Nice forechest and good fill in with shapely top and under lines, and good width of thigh. Not quite as tidy out and back as 1 but moved nicely in profile.

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch (10,1)

1st & BSBIB Parkinson’s Groomsville Hologem Heavens Dream B. Feminine and typey red brindle bitch with white trim. Well muscled with nicely constructed forequarters and strong, slightly sprung pasterns. Curvy top and under lines leading to strong hindquarters allowing her to move tidily out and back, and nicely in profile. Pleased to award her BSBIB and hear that she went Special Beginners’ Group 1 later in the day, well done.

2nd Fleming’s Kensesqui Moldova for Flerrow B. Balanced and well muscled black brindle bitch with a nice head and long neck into well laid shoulders. Straight forearms and standing on neat feet. Shapely top and under lines leading to a strong, nicely arched loin and well muscled hindquarters. Moved straight to and fro and nicely in profile. Just preferred the return of upper arm of 1 today,

1st Fleming’s Flerrow Love Like A Bomb. Very pretty feminine blue brindle with white trim just over 7 months old quite nicely muscled for her age. Straight front down to slightly sprung pasterns and neat feet. Just a little leggy right now but depth of chest meeting her elbow with tuck up under her arched loin. Won this class on her true movement out and back, showing lovely strides in profile.

2nd Cooper’s Ballauren’s Diamond. Typey, balanced and well muscled red fawn and white just two weeks between her and 1 but at a more mature stage. Long neck into well laid shoulders with upper arm to match. Straight front to good depth of chest for her age, shapely top and under lines leading to good width of thigh and well developed second thigh. Just preferred the tidier movement of 1 today.

3rd Lloyd’s Penwincoed Pamela Pumpkin.

Puppy Bitch (9,1)

A quality class of puppies who I’ve no doubt will all change places on different days, boding very well for the breed in the future.

1st Tyson’s Starceylon She’s Just A Lady. Lovely, quality, balanced and feminine black and white girl. Pretty head and expression, well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm and nice forechest down to straight forearms. Shapely top and under lines. Straight to and fro movement and strong quarters powering her round the ring in style.

2nd Ellis’ Silkridge Silhouette over Railfield. Another lovely, quality, balanced and feminine black with white trim girl. Nice head, strong neck into clean, well laid shoulders and upper arm to match. Very pleasing overall outline and well ribbed back. Good width of thigh and well developed second thigh. Moved well out and back and showed super paces in profile. Just a smidge croup high today.

3rd Mycroft, Spademan, Morris & Waddell’s Supeta’s Too Glam To Giva Damn with Crosscop.

1st BPB & BJIB Forrester & MacFarlane’s Collooney Anytime Anyplace at Finix. Attractive, quality, feminine and shapely pale brindle, still a puppy but only just, and this showed in her maturity in comparison to my MPB and PB class winners. Appealing head and expression, long neck into nice forechest, straight forearms, well sprung pasterns and standing on neat feet. Good depth of chest and well ribbed back leading to nice width of thigh and good second thigh with well let down hocks. Moved straight out and back, and well in profile showing nice paces with drive. Pleased to award her BPB and BJIB.

2nd Kemp’s Saraquele Smooth N Sassy. Very pretty, feminine pale fawn, another puppy, a month younger, built on slightly longer lines and not quite as mature as 1. Super head and expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Curvy underline to well angulated and muscled hindquarters. Moved straight to and fro and well in profile. Preferred the topline on the move of 1 today.

1st Morris, Waddell, Spademan & Mycroft’s Ch Crosscop Temptation to Supeta. I was very taken with this top quality, stunning, feminine pale brindle, with type and balance, a stand out winner in her class and not surprised to learn that she is already a champion. Gorgeous head and expression, long neck into the best of front construction, straight forearms and neat feet. Shapely top and under lines into well muscled hindquarters. Moved straight to and fro but really turned on the style in profile. Considered for the BCC.

2nd Mallinson’s Edenwhip A Moment In Thyme. Typey and feminine, red brindle with white trim and a shapely outline. Good head and expression leading to well laid shoulders, would just like a little more return of upper arm to match. Good fill in and straight forearms. Well muscled hindquarters with good width of thigh and well developed second thigh. Moved straight away and back and very well in profile.

3rd Smith’s Collooney Tullamire Dew over Lorbri.

Graduate Bitch (12,1)

1st Coulter’s Collooney Strawberry Wine. I loved this classic style, quality red and white bitch, with femininity, type and balance. Lovely head and expression, long neck into clean well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Straight forearms and standing on neat feet. Shapely top and under lines leading to strong loin and hindquarters with good width of thigh and well developed second thigh all used very well on the move. She was straight out and back and showed beautiful paces in profile. Very surprised she is still in graduate and another considered for the BCC.

2nd Stuart’s Shulune Neva Ending Thrills. Very pretty pale fawn parti colour, feminine and balanced with a lovely head, straight front, strong pasterns and well knuckled feet. Good depth of chest, curvy outline well ribbed back. Moved straight to and fro and very nicely in profile.

3rd Batley’s Veredon Ambition.

1st Place & Halliday’s Aarminias Pillow Talk. Super, feminine, pale brindle with quality, type and balance. Good head and neck into well constructed front with strong pasterns and standing on neat feet. Pleasing width to her chest with good fill in. Shapey outline leading to well muscled hindquarters. Moved straight away and back and well in profile.

2nd Lister & Swarbricks’ Edenwhip Ima A Bright Star. Classic fawn bitch, typey and feminine with quality. Lovely curvy, balanced outline with lots to like about her. Well laid shoulders with matching upper arm placing her elbows under her withers, leading to straight front. Good depth of chest. Nicely muscled hindquarters used well in profile, just preferred the tidier out and back movement of 1 today.

1st Halliday & Croxford’s Aarminias French Fancy at Whittimere JW. Quality, feminine and balanced black with white trim. Super curvy outline and overall shape. I particularly liked her strong pasterns and well knuckled feet, with good fill in and well ribbed back. Excellent width to her thigh and well developed second thigh with short rear pasterns. She was the tidiest of movers out and back and showed nice paces in profile.

2nd Cooper’s Ballauren’s You Got It. Typey pale fawn, well muscled and still feminine. Built on longer lines than 1, still only 15 months old so some maturing to go yet. Pretty head and long neck into well laid shoulders, straight front and neat feet. Nice arch over her loin into well muscled hindquarters. Preferred the tidier movement of 1 today.

3rd Nixon’s Afterglow Whirlwind.

Limit Bitch (11,1)

1st Holland’s Elmanash Gemini Gem. I was very drawn to this gorgeous, quality, striking blue parti coloured girl who scores very highly in type. A classic whippet, feminine, balanced, well angulated and a super size. I judged her 4 years ago when she was 16 months old and she has matured beautifully. She still has the curvy top and under lines I look for. A pretty head and gentle expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm with good fill in, and leading to straight forearms, standing on neat feet. Well ribbed back and good width of thigh. She was very tidy out and back and excellent in profile. Another superb girl I considered for the BCC.

2nd Wilkinson’s Silkridge Saffron of Fletchgate. Another girl I judged 4 years ago. I liked her very much then and still do, at 5½ yrs old she has settled and made the most of herself today. She is a balanced and feminine, brindle and white with good type and presented in excellent muscle condition. Lovely head and expression, muscular neck into well laid shoulders leading to a good forechest and standing on neat feet. Lovely shapely top and under lines. She was straight out and back moved out in profile with freedom and ease using herself well.

3rd Short’s Collooney Bellissima Bloom JW.

Open Bitch (7,0)

I was completely bowled over by the absolutely stunning quality of this class. I was already spoilt for choice for the BCC in the preceding classes but I would have happily given the CC to any of the bitches in this class too. I was so sorry that 2 very worthy champions had to go cardless today. My final decisions were based on the finest of margins.

1st BCC & BOB Turner’s Ch Gilnockie Kinda Cool. Stunning, top quality, feminine and typey brindle. Beautifully balanced with the right combination of muscle and elegance. My hands flowed over her fabulous curvy outline covered by a coat in great condition. What I particularly liked about this girl, and the thing that clinched her the class, the BCC and BOB was her unexaggerated forechest and perfect fill in. On the move she was foot perfect out and back and in profile she floated round the ring with complete freedom and totally effortless strides. So pleased to award her the BCC and BOB.

2nd & RBCC Perkins & Van Der Schaaf’s Ch Crème Anglaise’s Entourage with Silkridge JW. Another stunning, top quality, feminine and typey, well balanced brindle. These 2 girls were like peas in a pod with very little to choose between them, my notes say “same for 2”. She also had a lovely flowing curvy outline to her and every bit a worthy champion. Another foot perfect performance on the move to and fro, striding out with ease in profile looking like she could go all day long. She pushed very hard for the BCC today, I just preferred the fill in and forechest of 1 but pleased to award her the RBCC.

3rd Spademan, Mycroft, Morris & Waddell’s Crosscop California Barbie from Supeta JW.

Veteran Bitch (6,2)

1st BVB & BVIB Wilkinson’s Citycroft Starfall JW VW ShCEx OSW. Quality, balanced, feminine and typey, fawn girl. Still very sound and well muscled, and a credit to her owner. Lovely head and expression, long neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm leading to straight forearms. Good depth of chest and well ribbed back to lovely arch over her loin, good width of thigh, well developed second thigh and well let down hocks. She moved straight out and back and showed reach and drive in profile. Pleased to award her BVB and BVIS.

2nd Short’s Ch Collooney Bit On The Side JW. Another lovely pale brindle bitch, quality, balanced and typey with a super curvy outline. Lovely head and expression, long neck into clean shoulders and upper arm to match. Straight front and good pasterns with strong hindquarters. Moved straight away and back, just not quite the profile reach of 1 today.
