Driffield Championship Dog Show

Breed: Spaniel (Sussex)

Driffield Championship Dog Show Society

30th August 2026

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the officers and committee for the invitation to judge at their Golden Anniversary show. First time at Stafford, and it all ran smoothly despite a few glitches. I had a lovely entry both numerically and in quality, so I was splitting hairs in some classes. I’d like to especially thank the Sussex Spaniel exhibitors for their patience which resulted in high-speed dashes to make their various groups. To my very able steward Calum you kept everything running to order, thank you for your help, and to each and every one of the exhibitors that came along for my opinion.

Class 1853 SBD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3980 TILSTON, Mr David Carnedd Llewelyn

Promising youngster of 15 months, holds a balanced outline, head is of good proportions with good eye colour. His forequarters are well angled, but he is still developing in forechest. He is well boned with good feet. He was happy on the move and moved well.

2nd: 3978 SAMPSON, Dr Sara & SAMPSON, Mr Guy Crumbledor Archie Alderton

Preferred overall outline of 1. Head is masculine with wide skull and a pronounced stop.

He is well off for body but has a tendency to lose his topline. He’s a little short in upper arm but has a good turn of stifle and width of thigh. He moved out well.

Class 1856 PD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

Firstly, I’d like to apologies for the disappointment my decision to withhold 1st place would have caused to both handlers. Judging isn’t easy and sometime tough decisions have to be made. I was always taught in my early judging days, that you are judging the dogs presented on the day as you cannot predict what will happen in the future. I understand puppies may and do change as they mature, but on the day, I just felt that these two youngsters were just not ready.

1st: WHD WITHHELD

2nd: 3977 ROBERTS, Mr D Eald Wolf Moon Over Swansford

Preferred his overall breed type to that of his littermate in 3. His head is developing and as such he’s a little loose in eye. I’d have liked a little more length of leg to balance him and a firmer topline. He was happy on the move and was presented well.

3rd: 3974 HIPGRAVE, Mrs L Eald Harvest Moon

In contrast to his litter mate in 2, this young dog is a little too high on the leg, however he has a lovely level topline that he held on the move. Head needs to break and like his litter mate, he too would benefit from a tighter eye. He has decent depth and good bone and feet. He was legs and wings on the move, but he was happy.

Lots to like about this 3 year old. He has correct height to length ratio. Head is masculine and of correct proportions, good width to skull and frowning brows. Neck is strong and muscular; he is well off for forechest and has strength through body. Correctly angled at the rear with good width of thigh. He moves out well, true for and aft and shown in his rich golden liver jacket. RBD

2nd: 3968 ALLEN-LINE, Mrs E Bjorksatras Corfitz At Deckham (imp Swe)

Masculine head on this almost 2 years dog, he’s just a little lose in eye. I preferred the overall size and outline of 1, but he is well bodied with good angles both ends, holds a firm level topline, good return of upper arm, has good width of thigh and well bent stifle, he moves out well in all directions.

Class 1860 OD (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3970 BRADBURY, Mr Lee & PRESTON, Miss Danielle Sh Ch Harasteorra Big Bear JW

Quality male, super well-balanced head that is masculine. His large hazel eyes look at you with such a soft expression. His outline is balanced with super body and depth, lovely strong bone and round feet. Neck is long and strong; topline is firm and level both on the move and on the stack. Sholders are well laid with good return of upper arm, he has ample forechest and depth with lovely rib. Rear quarters are muscular and he uses them to drive around the ring, showing true for and aft movement and his distinctive roll. He was shown in good coat and condition. No hesitation in awarding him BD and BOB.

1st: 3973 CONEY, Miss Samantha Jane Mynydd Manod

Pretty bitch of 15 months, presents a good shape, head is balanced with enough neck, she has good body proportions, she’s a shade ‘bum high’ at the moment, has decent angulation at both ends, just need to develop in forechest. She moves out well with typical Sussex movement.

Class 1862 VB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 3976 PENNEMAN, Mrs N & WAKEFIELD, Mrs V I Ned Bel Sh Ch / Lux Ch Int Sh Ch Swiss VdH Eald Vi:

Lovely lady of 9 years, she is good for type, head is feminine and of good proportions, with lovely dark eye. She is well off for neck, well laid shoulder but could be a little better in upper arm. She has ample forechest and has depth through body and lovely spring of rib. She holds her topline on the move but has a tendency to lose it on the stack, that said she scores in her overall strength. She moves out well with correct action in all directions. I felt she was better developed in depth and rib over the other bitches in the challenge, so had no hesitation of awarding her BB BOS & BV

Class 1863 MPB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3979 SAMPSON, Dr Sara & SAMPSON, Mr Guy Bowswizzler Dorotea

Super puppy of 7 months, she shows good breed type, head is still developing as is body but it’s all there. She is balanced in outline, with good angles fore and aft, her topline is firm and she holds it level on the stack and on the move and she moves out so well for her tender age. BP

2nd: 3981 TILSTON, Mr David Rydonmist San Antonio Rose

Real baby, she’s not as forward as 1 at this stage. Head is balanced with good eye shape and colour, she is still developing in front, but she has decent depth. She has good width of thigh and well-turned stifle, she moves out happily on the move and moved well in all directions.

Class 1865 JB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 3972 CLARKE, Mrs Joanne Carnedd Gwenllian

Attractive youngster, feminine balanced head with good width of skull and pronounced stop forming her frowning brows. Her neck is of good length into her level topline that she holds on the move. Front angulation is well constructed, has strength though body and decent ribs. Rear quarters are well muscled, and she uses them well to move out with good reach and drive. RBB

2nd: 3973 CONEY, Miss Samantha Jane Mynydd Manod

2nd SBB

Class 1867 LB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

Super head on this bitch, balanced with lovely eye. Correct ear set, well angled front and rear quarters. She holds a balanced outline and has decent depth. She moves out true fore and aft and was shown in her rich golden liver jacket.
