Deerhounds

Thank you Boston & District for inviting me to Judge at your well run and friendly show in such a fabulous showground. Thank you also to my very cheerful stewards and to everybody who entered under me. Judging our breed is my great privilege and I held no joy in withholding the Dog CC. With only two young males present, they had lots to like but not quite enough merit for a CC on the day.

1st Rose’s Hyndsight Better Believe It BOS

2yr old Lighter grey male with a gentle elegance about him. Handsome head with correct, small well folded ears and a soft expression. A little upright in front, would prefer more return of upper arm. Would prefer a little more rise over his loins. Strong hindquarters, broad hips and thighs and plenty of length hip to hock. Correct coat of good length. Moved very well in side profile when going forwards, tendency to flatten his top line at times. Sound movement going, erratic movement towards. Lots to like and I am sure he will keep improving with age.

2nd

Constantine’s Kaleginy Shogun. This 2yr old male is very shapely in every way. He stands with lots of presence. A little strong in his head and expression with a lighter eye than 1. Strong correctly arched neck, good front, plenty of fore chest. Correct tuck up, well ribbed back, correct topline and strong broad hindquarters. Held his topline well on the move. Movement today was erratic coming and going. A lovely dog but mostly lost out to 1 today as overall I feel he is too heavy in type. He is still young and may well end up more refined.

A lovey class of elegant bitches

1st Edward’s Kilbourne Devon RCC

Shapley small dark attractive girl, wonderfully feminine. Super expression, well folded ears set on to a well arched neck. Well balanced, correct front, well held topline flowing into a correctly drooped hindquarter, low tail set and low hocks. Would have preferred her to be in fitter condition but that did not detract from her effortless movement. Looked like she could go all day. Superbly handled in the challenge, giving nothing away. RCC

2nd Stuart & Holt’s Ollandsheart Matilda

Another lovey type. Attractive head, wide enough neck, would prefer more front angulation. Well knuckled strong feet. Broad strong loin. Powerful hind end which she made good use of on the move, long striding and well balanced. A little less straight moving coming than going. Held her topline very well on the move.

LB (7/4)

Although a big variety of types, all looked delightful lined up.

1st Stuart & Holt Packway Cora Sundrop at Ollandsheart CC & BOB

This very shapely dog is coming into her prime now and it looks like she will continue to blossom. Everything I was looking for, graceful type, easy long active true movement yet still powerful with the conformation to stay sound. Lovely head and expression, balanced fore & hind. Super topline all flowing curves. A little longer in loin than 2. I loved the drive she propelled herself with, a well deserved winner. BCC BOB

2nd Bailey’s Greyflax Minnie The Moocher 3yr

Spoilt for toplines today, she was another who held herself well on the move. Strong and powerful type, heavier than 1. Correct front, sweeping lines throughout. Good chest depth for her age, good tuck up. Very strong and powerful over her loins. Very sound coming and going.

OB (5/5)

What super bitches - I had my work cut out. I must mention my 3rd placed bitch whose movement today was wonderful, a real treat.

1st Bailey’s Ch Greyflax Miss Grace

At 2 yrs old she has some finishing to do but a super and curvaceous girl. Typey head, dark rims (which I am pleased to say were in abundance today.) Would prefer her ears a little higher but still an attractive head. Glorious strong correct arched neck, she could most certainly hold a stag. Would prefer a little more return of upper arm. Another good topline, so important in our breed, good depth of chest and good tuck up. Strong well knuckled feet, broad thighs with plenty of width. Super hindquarter angulation. Harsh coat. Moved very soundly from all angles.

2nd Lucas & Dargonne Packway Ecotrailer 6yr

Longer, rangier in type but nevertheless still very balanced and delightfully houndy. Pretty head, super soft typical Deerhound expression. Aquiline nose, well arched neck. Front a little upright. Super topline which she held well. Tight well knuckled feet. Loved her length from hip to hock and well bent stifles - she moved with plenty of drive, sound as a pound coming and going. Super coat. Both lovely bitches.

VB (2/2)

1st Lucas & Dargonne’s Packway Smackfarthing

At 7yrs old she is a spring chicken in age compared to 2. She would easily go and bring home your dinner for sure. Super working type who would stay sound on the hill. The type I was looking for. Feminine head, good ears, dark eye and good expression. Shoulder assembly slightly more forward than I would have liked. Powerful loins with plenty of width, low hocks and correct bend of stifle. Moved very well, it was impossible for her not to be placed 1st.

2nd Wilce-Quinton & Quinton Kilbourne Louisa Chick to Kirjojax

At 9yrs old now I still love this girl. I have judged her before, and she has so many wonderful attributes. Best ears of the day, textbook really. Stronger head than 1 with a lighter eye. Super strong neck. Still has fantastic feet, well knuckled and tidy. Good underline and, matching topline, great width and breadth to her second thigh and a tail that you see less of these days – broad, strong and a perfect rudder at speed. Moved very well on side profile but was understandably less steady on her feet and was out moved by 1.

SBB(2/2)

1st Keane’s Beardswood Xenia

At 4yrs old this girl is coming into her own. Stood beautifully, a little lighter in type than some other but still screaming Deerhound. Narrower head, soft expression, rose ears, held well. Would prefer more return of upper arm. Correct arch to top line, very good feet. Moved very soundly coming and going, with that wonderful ‘bounce’ in the moment of suspension that we don’t see as much as we used to.

2nd Taylor’s Packway Star of The East

Super type with lots to like about her. Nothing over exaggerated, Lovey head, neck could flow a little better but super front, plenty of return to upper arm and standing well underneath herself. Well ribbed back, broad hips and thighs. Carrying too much weight today which showed in her movement which lacked drive. Moved very soundly coming and going.
