Judge Miss L Jones

Retriever (Flat Coated)

Thank you to the SKC for the opportunity to judge, and to the stewards who kept the ring flowing smoothly. On the whole I was pleased with the entry, however I am concerned at some of the high tail carriages in both dogs and bitches, along with head carriages on the move, as these ideally should be forward placed , head and tail on a level with the back. Having said that its not easy to get everything in one dog, and all dogs will have their faults. I always think flatcoats are work in progress, always tweaking things here and there but pleased to see that as a breed we haven’t lost our identity and what makes flatcoats special.

Minor Puppy Dog ( 1, 0 abs)

1ST Hightyne Hypasonic Missile (Mr P R & Mrs C E & Miss L C Huyton)

Quality puppy, excellent bone for size, standing true all round, good head with a kind dark almond shaped eye, nice reach of neck into adequate shoulders, good topline and tailset, well angulated hind-quarters, which he used well on the move, moving nicely for one so young. Very neat stylish puppy.

 Puppy Dog ( 4 ,0 abs)

1ST & BP Flatcharm Hobgoblin at Tarnmillcrag (Mr J & Mrs R Pierce)

Lovely typey puppy , good head, well filled in between the eyes with the correct eye shape and expression, very smart of the correct size, excellent bone and feet, good topline and correct tailset, moving soundly with parallel movement both fore and aft. Good reach of neck into good layback of shoulders and adequate return of upper arm, good length through the ribcage, short loin, moving sound and true. Close decision between 1& 2

2ND Lamesbella Maine of Daicheil (Mr A & Mrs A Laird)

Another lovely type of dog, excellent bone and feet, good long head with a kind dark eye, shows good length through the ribcage, good layback of shoulders and nice return of upper arm, good neck which flows into the correct topline and tailset, moving sound and true showing plenty of drive. Top size for me and mature for age, however he looks to have finished his growing and will no doubt trouble the best.

3RD Flatcharm Mr Brisk (Miss K L Holland)

Junior Dog ( 3, 0abs)

1ST Thurwhitt Black Jack at Torrweaving (Mrs A & Mr Jr Mcconnell)

Of the correct size in lovely coat and condition, excellent bone and feet, pleasing masculine head with a good dark eye and kind expression, nice reach of neck into adequate shoulders, would prefer slightly more return of upper arm, showing good length through the ribcage with a good short loin, standing on good legs all round and moving with drive.

2ND Clandrift Make It Funky JW (Mrs V Bowen)

A very well constructed young dog, of the correct size and type, nicely moulded well filled in head, good dark eye. Good layback of shoulders, and good return of upper arm, standing on good legs, with plenty of bone for size. Nicely angulated hindquarters, presents a balanced outline. Needs to settle on the move and not in his best coat today.

3RD Moontorn Count On Me (Miss A & Mr L Bellamy & Nicklin)

 Yearling Dog (3 ,0)

1ST Flatcharm Mr Heckles for Benoveor JW (Mrs V & Miss H & Mrs J Mcilwaine & Mcilwaine & Reynolds)

A very smart dog of the correct size, well proportioned throughout, in lovely coat and condition. Good quality bone, good neck and adequate shoulders, would prefer slightly more return of upper arm, but has a nice flow through to the correct topline and tailset. Beautiful head of good length , well filled in between the eyes, flat cheeks, correct almond shaped eye, good dark colour and kind expression. Moving sound and true, just needs a little more confidence.

2ND Thrillerbark Ardroil (Mr A Riach)

Very eye catching dog, slightly larger than the winner, in excellent coat and condition , good bone and feet, good masculine head, showing good length through the muzzle, good dark eye, skull is a little more domed than I would prefer. Good reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and good hind angulation, in profile he moved with drive, holding his topline throughout, just a little untidy in the front.

3RD Wychwizard Forester at Tarnmillcrag JW (Mr J & Mrs R Pierce)

Post Graduate Dog (6,0)

Quite a tough class to judge as all dogs were at different stages of development and size, however the first three epitomised the breed, just preferring the balance of the first two

1ST Rotherfield Made to Last at Steelriver (Mrs W Blain)

Very scopey dog, with plenty of length , which comes from his correctly constructed forehand and length through the ribcage. Good bone and excellent feet, nicely angulated hindquarters which he used to advantage showing reach and drive. One of the few dogs moving with his head placement forward and the tail coming straight off the back. Lovely long head, with the correct infill, lovely eye shape and colour with a naughty expression. Still needing to develop but will watch his future with interest.

 2ND Levliann Big Bang (Mrs L Varty-Lindsay)

Well balanced dog of good proportions, good head, with correct dark almond shaped eye and an intelligent expression, excellent bone and feet, good layback of shoulders, good return of upper arm , nicely defined brisket and good depth of chest, good strong hindquarters which were used well to move sound and true, just preferring the tail carriage of 1 today.

3RD Bitcon Midnight Dream (Miss C R Auld)

Limit Dog (6 , 0)

1ST Bitcon Alliance with Bluewaters (ai) JW (Mrs J Wild)

Beautifully presented dog, head of good length, well filled in with a good eye shape and kind expression, good reach of neck into adequate shoulders and upper arm, good depth of chest, good short loin, good topline and tailset, moving sound and true. Presented a racy appearance.

2ND Lussac Xcape Artist (ai) (Mrs S May)

Very close decision between 1 & 2 , has the best of heads being classical in type with the correct eye shape and twinkling expression, Slightly longer cast than the winner and on the day just didn’t seem to move with forward propulsion and felt he actually needed a larger ring to get going, however he moved soundly with the correct tailset and gained his place on his good overall type.

3RD Hightyne Night Train (Miss M Hall)

Open Dog (8, 2)

A lovely couple of males, each in their absolute prime and on the day stood out for me epitomising type and soundness.

1 ST & DCC & BOS Sh Ch Rotherfield Secret Code (Mrs R & Mr J Anson & Mcmanus)

Masculine dog, with a well moulded head, the kindest and darkest of eyes and an intelligent expression. Excellent bone and substance, not quite the feet, good reach of neck into well laid back shoulders and moderate return of upper arm, good deep chest with gradual spring of rib, and a short loin. Good strong hindquarters with the correct angulation. Moving sound and true with his head on a level with his back and the correct tailset, shows reach and power and no exaggerations. Just preferring the front construction of the winner.

2ND RCC , BVD Ch Woodfinch Masquerade (Mr D & Mrs R Bellamy)

Of classical type with the very best of male heads being , long well filled in, flat cheeks, lovely eye and the kindest of expressions. Lovely reach of neck and adequate shoulders. Excellent bone and the best of feet, presents a racy appearance, with depth through his ribcage and good strong well angulated hind quarters, another dog who moved soundly with the correct head placement and tailset, holding his topline and moving with reach and drive, unlucky to meet 1 and his sister for BV.

3RD Flatcharm Serious Pig (Ms C Ramunno)

Veteran Dog (2, 0)

1ST Steelriver Hit The Beach with Buckleyhill (Mrs H J & Mr I M Buckley)

Nice sized male with excellent bone and the best of feet , good forehand construction with a good head, kind dark eye with the correct eye shape and kind expression, presented a neat well balanced dog, although carrying a little too much weight. Moving well.

2ND Rachanmill Columbo (Mrs H & Miss J Macpherson)

Larger scopier type of dog in excellent coat and condition, beautifully handled , good bone but not the best of feet. Good reach of neck into adequate shoulders, presents a typical flatcoat showing enthusiasm and verve, moving soundly although a little untidy in the front. Would just prefer a little more refinement in head .

 Special Beginners Dog (absent 1)

Good Citizen Dog Scheme Dog ( Absentees: 0,)

1ST Casblaidd Island in The Sky Sgwc Kcwgc VW (Mr C & Mrs C Hewison)

A 9 year old male maturing nicely but still acting like a puppy. Excellent bone, good reach of neck into adequate shoulders, would prefer slightly more return of upper arm, but he has good depth and length to the ribcage, nice short loin, well angulated hindquarters, good topline and tailset. Good long head and a silly expression, moving sound and true. Reminds me of the type of dogs we used to see in the past.

Minor Puppy Bitch (4,1)- lovely class of quality puppies

1ST Hototo’s Edge of Glory (Miss C J Chambers)

Mature puppy, with a defined brisket, good layback of shoulders and good return of upper arm, overall nicely balanced, moving well from good strong hindquarters , carrying her tail correctly and always wagging, pleasing head with the darkest of eyes and a kind expression, very well balanced for age.

2nd Levliann Tit for Tat (Mrs L Varty-Lindsay)

Lovely type of bitch with a classical head and correct eye shape and expression, good bone, excellent feet, good reach of neck in good coat and condition, moving well , just tending to stand a bit back end high at this stage of her development.

Puppy Bitch (3,2)

1st Hototo’s Edge of Glory (Miss C J Chambers)

2nd Clandrift Funky Angel (Mrs V Bowen)

Top sized bitch for me but she has all the right qualities with a long head, good dark eyes, good layback of shoulders and good upper arm, well balanced through the body, moving soundly with reach and drive.

3rd Moontorn Chasing The Dream JW (Miss A Bellamy)

Yearling Bitch (11,2)

1st Willowswind Skylark JW (Mrs T & Miss C Gale)

Super type of flatcoat, classical head and correct almond shaped eye and kindest of expressions, in super coat and condition, slightly taller and top size for me, but has overall quality and refinement. Excellent bone and feet, good reach of neck into adequate shoulders, level topline, presents a racy appearance, moving soundly with correct side gait.

Another one out the top drawer, just losing a little verve towards the end when standing, lovely type of bitch in excellent coat and condition, good bone and feet, good topline and tailset, moving soundly , very accurate footfall, good long head, the kindest and darkest of eyes, very well balanced throughout.

3rd Everblack Euphoria (Miss I Kulczycka)

Limit Bitch (12,1)- A strong class with a lovely trio of bitches, just preferring the reach and drive of the winner.

1 BCC & BOB Finhamspride Clio Sgwc (Mrs Sara & Ms Emc Thurgood & Holmes)

Correct sized well balances bitch, of lovely type with a long well moulded head, good dark eye with a kind expression, good reach of neck which flows into good layback of shoulders and adequate return of upper arm, good depth and width through the chest with correct gradual spring, tapering towards a good short loin. The best of hindquarters which have enough angulation without being exaggerated. Everything about this bitch screams moderation and really comes alive on the move with her head and tail moving on a level with her back and correct footfall both in profile and head on – one of the few that can do this and is testament to her construction.

2nd - Hopevalley Morning Shine over Wychwizard (Mrs C & Mr A Leavy)

Such a pretty classical type of bitch in super coat and condition, the very best of heads, correct eye and expression, enough bone for size, nicely balanced throughout, good deep chest, adequate shoulders and upper arm, would prefer a little more length in neck to help finish off the picture, but a quality bitch throughout moving sound and true both fore and aft.

Veteran Bitch (7 ,1)

1 ST & BV & VG2 Sh Ch Woodfinch Highland Fairy for Flatcharm (Miss K L Holland)

Quality bitch with a feminine, typical flatcoat head, of classical type all though, showing quality and refinement, excellent bone and feet, lovely flowing lines from the tip of her nose to her correct tailset, so elegant throughout and in no way common, cobby or coarse. Moving sound and true in her best coat and condition, pushed hard for RCC and beat her brother for BV and not surprised she gained G2 in the veteran group.

2nd Sh Ch Hightyne Ramblin Rose (Mr P R & Mrs C E & Miss L C Huyton)

Unlucky to come up against 1 today , such an honest sort of bitch, who excels in her sound movement and correct footfall, another with the type of head I was looking for , long, well moulded, lovely eye shape, good dark colour and intelligent expression. A heavier type of coat, but underneath is extremely well made, well muscled in good condition, the best of legs standing of fabulous feet. Nothing much to fault just preferring the flow of the winner today.
