Dachshund (Long-Haired) and Dachshund (Wire-Haired)

A huge thanks to WELKS for the invitation to judge these varieties for the first time and my wonderful stewards for their help. It was a total pleasure to judge the Longs and Wires today and whilst I found a more consistent depth of quality in the Wires, I thought the best Longs were on par with the best Wires. A family affair of main winners in both varieties; in Longs, the RDCC/BV was the sire of both CC winners, and the CC winners in Wires were half brother and sister.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Veteran Dog (2,0)

1. Roberts’ Ch Swansford Gabrieldor. What a super start to the day! This showman clearly loved every moment in the ring and really looked the part sporting a glorious shaded red jacket. An excellent size and so full of type. Beautiful head and expression. Extremely well made all through and it shows on the move where he goes with great activity and power, covering the ground in an effortless and dignified manner. I have to say that I thought he would be a comfortable CC winner, and it was only his lovely son, whose overall proportions I preferred, who pipped him to it. Grateful to judge a dog of this quality. RCC & BV.

2. Eve’s Sundayshill Benedict. Another smart veteran presented in good order. Pleasing head of good length with dark eyes. Good neck and forechest. Fairly well balanced in angulation fore and aft, if not quite the front of 1. Well ribbed but slightly long in loin. Holds his firm topline on the move where he is sound but unable to match the power and accuracy of 1.

1. Hanney-Mitchell’s Bronia Luciano. Quality young dog with an excellent temperament. Already quite forward for his age and in super body and overall condition. He has a masculine head with a good eye and well set ear. Very good neck and shoulder with a pleasing upper arm and neat elbows. Good ribbing and a strong rear. Lovely free mover, though not quite as true in the rear as his litter sister. Presented in excellent condition with a lovely coat texture. Best Puppy Dog.

1. Partridge’s Ranglewood Xmas Cracker to Riveroyal. 16 months old dog. I preferred this dog for his slightly more refined substance all through. Scores well in proportions and has adequate ground clearance. Cleaner through the head than 2 with good balance of skull to muzzle and dark eyes. Length neck. Fairly good front and ribbing. Moved well in profile with a balanced stride, but topline could be firmer.

2. Lacey’s Abydezi Shades of Glory. A very masculine dog, heavier through than 1, but very good for height to length proportions. A strong, masculine head, though a bit wide in skull. Pleased for infill of forechest, spring of rib and short loin. Good neck and holds a level topline on the stack though needs to settle on the move. Not quite giving it his all on the move today and unable to match the stride of 1.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Post Graduate Dog (3,0)

1. O’Neill’s Ranglewood Pheonix at Donnadach. Perhaps a little lower in overall proportions than ideal but preferred his overall construction and flow of outline, which he also kept on the move where he had the most sound and ground covering action in the class. Lovely head with nice detail, dark eyes and slight arch to muzzle. Fairly good front construction and feet, with good length of ribbing and short loin. Balanced rear. Could be a little more true in rear movement, but moves well when viewed from the front and side.

2. Paskins’ Kindeace London's Calling JW. A young dog at 18 months and still not yet finished in terms of body and in coat on the day, wearing quite a light jacket. Appreciated his proportions. Undoubtedly masculine in head, I’d prefer it somewhat more refined, but he has dark, well set eyes. Plenty neck. Would prefer better layback of shoulder and more return of upper arm. Excellent forechest and feet. Lots of strength in his rear with well bent stifles. Sound enough on the move but not the flow of 1 and a little fond of his tail.

3. Page’s Giovanni Rude for Kokoadax (Imp).

1. Paskins’ Kindeace Hit The Road Jack JW. A balanced, quality dog with proportions and ground clearance I appreciated. Presents a good outline with a nice flow from neck into shoulder and level topline. Would like more keel. Scored over 2 in layback of shoulder and ribbing, though would like a touch more length of upper arm on him. Well ribbed and firm in topline both standing and moving. Liked his croup. Moved well in all directions with fairly good reach and drive in profile.

2. O’Neill’s Ranglewood Finlaggan at Donnadach. Perhaps better for size than 1 but not quite the proportions, ground clearance and flow of outline. Masculine in head with a lovely eye and expression. Would prefer a little more front angulation and tigher feet. Plenty forechest and spring of rib, and in good body. Well bent stifles and parallel hocks. Not the drive of 1 on the move.

1. Geeson’s Ch Abydachs Return Of The Night. What a super dog. Excellent proportions and flow of outline. He is upstanding and handsome and carries himself so well. Masculine yet refined head, dark almond shaped eyes and well set ears. Excellent construction throughout but particularly pleasing in front and has excellent feet. Truly impressed on the move, totally unexaggerated yet so accurate in footfall and displays excellent reach and drive in profile, never losing his outline and maintaining such a typical carriage. First class presentation and handling. CC & BOB.

2. McNaughton’s Cedavoch Circeo. A quality dog who made for good competition in this class. Not dissimilar in overall appearance as 1, particularly in terms of proportions and outline. Really liked his head which I thought had ideal substance and balance, conical shape and lovely dark eyes. Not the shoulder of 1, though still more than reasonable in this entry. Super coat and condition. A sound mover, if not the activity and accuracy of the CC and RCC winners.

3. Fricker’s Sundayshill Theodore at Borzdac.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Minor Puppy Bitch (1,0)

1. Cross’ Abydezi Bellatrix Loggeta. Charming little puppy with a delightful temperament. Liked her size and proportions. Still yet to develop her jacket, there was very little to hide but evidenced her balanced front and rear. Feminine and balanced hear, lovely long neck and standing over her front well. Good ribbing and balanced rear. Full of attitude on the move and when settled, showed a sound stride.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Puppy Bitch (2,0)

1. Hanney-Mitchell’s Bronia Luciella. The winner here is already well developed and presented in good body and condition. Lovely head and expression, enough neck. Excellent front construction and a well filled forechest. Deep and well sprung ribs with a short loin. Moderate and balanced in the rear. A touch ‘bum high’ on the move at present but she is so free and easy, yet accurate in all directions. Lovely quality. Best Puppy in Breed.

2. Pike & Carter’s Swansford Olympiadora at Breezelyn. Another pleasing puppy who is good for size and substance. Feminine head with slightly arched skull and good balance of muzzle. Fairly well made in front but not quite that of 1 and therefore the flow of neck into shoulder. Level topline and well rounded croup. Strong hocks and uses her rear well on the move too, but she too needs to settle into her rear moving.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Junior Bitch (3,1)

1. McNaughton’s Cedavoch Twist Of Fate. Thought this young bitch was super impressive on the stack. Presents an excellent outline, standing over herself very well and has excellent proportions. Lovely quality and balance to her conical head with a strong underjaw. Reachy neck. She is well made throughout, particularly pleasing for length of upper arm and neat elbows placing her forelegs right underneath her. Very true on the up and down and can show good reach and drive in profile; just wish she would put more into it and then I’m sure she will reach the top.

2. Geeson’s Abydachs Out Of The Fire (AI). Ultra feminine bitch with a lovely flow to her outline. Pleasing proportions and balance. Feminine head and dark eye. Long neck and well made in front. Ribbed well back and holds a level topline standing and moving. Well muscled rear with parallel hocks. Lovely coat. Not quite as accurate up and down as 1 but puts all in so pushed the winner hard here.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Yearling Bitch (1,0)

1. Barnicott & Pascoe’s Fahoogle Minack. Pleased for size and substance. Good balance to her head with dark eyes and good expression. Strong neck with enough length, fair front construction. Good bone and feet. Would prefer a better ratio of length of ribbing to loin, but she scores well for overall proportions, not overly long with good ground clearance. Can settle in topline as she tends to roach. Quite reluctant on the move.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Post Graduate Bitch (4,0)

1. Partridge’s Pettigans Viva La Vida by Riveroyal JW. Quite an impressive, mature bitch who stands over herself well with a defiant carriage standing and moving. Long and feminine head, preferred her head planes over 2. Dark, well shaped eyes. Long neck and fairly good front. Can’t afford to be any longer for overall proportions but she holds a firm topline standing and moving and is well ribbed back. I’d like her to be a little more positive in rear movement but she has a good stride in profile.

2. Wilkinson & Wakeham’s Bronia Letizia for Wakywilks. In stark contrast to 1, this young bitch, still just 9 month old, presents a rather more moderate and compact picture in overall proportions at present. Well made in front with a pleasing flow of neck into shoulder. Excellent feet. Super ribbing and excels in short loin. Holds a level topline. Just giving a lot away in maturity on the day, particularly on the move where she is yet to fully settle into a balanced stride.

3. West’s Delsaux Twenty Carat Golden for Kendalldax JW.

1. Barnicott & Pascoe’s Fahoogle Minack.

2. Lacey’s Abydachs Renegade Angel at Abydezi. A mature bitch who scores for proportions and ground clearance. Wouldn’t like her any heavier through, but she has a flowing outline. Pleasing head and expression, good strength of underjaw. Would like a touch more layback in front, quite moderate in rear too. Good spring of rib and fairly short in loin. Moved ok, if a little lacking in stride.

Dachshund (Long-Haired) Open Bitch (5,1) Quality class of four Champion bitches. Even in such a quality class, it became a two-horse race of these two excellent bitches with very little to separate them. Both are so well constructed throughout and move with super drive and length of stride, both holding their outline so well.

1. Robert’s Ch Swansford Padmeadora JW. Such a typical and quality bitch, so similar to her sire and has his activity and power on the move, and a slightly longer stride than 2 which ultimately won her the class and the CC.

2. Hanney-Mitchell’s Ch Cavallibrook Final Fling Bronia. Another super bitch with the most excellent proportions, slightly preferred her neck into shoulder. A close decision and a comfortable RCC winner.

3. Pike & Carter’s Ch/Ir Ch Breezelyn Longing For Love CW25.
