I would like to say thank you to the committee of WKC for the invite to judge my beloved breed at their prestigious show, the level of care and attention they showed to every judge was heart-warming. The judge’s lunch was a full blown Sunday roast, which was amazing and just what I needed for the long journey home. My ring stewards were professional, prompt, efficient, easy to talk to and they manged the ring and proceedings with ease. The buzz and atmosphere around the show ground was electric, with plenty of trade stands to tempt you to spend your pennies. I’ve been to a number of champ shows over the past 12 months that have felt flat and dull, with limited stands - so whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.

The level of sportsmanship, clapping, cheer and laughter outside the ring and sometimes in the ring too, was heart-warming to experience - something that was lost a decade ago and I’m so glad its back in abundance.

The positives I observed from today were the thick, heavy and longer ears seem to have vanished, as has the much heavier set cart horses that were around when we started out. I was worried that there would be an abundance of broader back of skulls sometimes associated with a shorter muzzle but not always, as witnessed on our many trips across the pond and had the potential to become fashion here - but there wasn’t, just the one or two. Generally, I thought heads were much improved since I last judged, less coarseness with just a touch of a dish, nothing exaggerated, which I also thought we could have seen with the influence of Italian blood coming in a few years back. What has been lost in some was the true Pointer expression which is hard to describe, unless you’ve owned or bred one with it to witness it, if not then you’re missing out. When you approach a dog from the front, either you get drawn into their gaze or their soul leaps out at you, their eyes bright and kind, not to be mistaken for a light eye, with real roundness to the main part of the eye, but not like a button. Too many eyes were dull and lifeless; some were also a little small in proportion the head size. I don’t think any judge cannot pass without commenting on movement, which was in the main, shocking and very sad to see - mainly in the dogs today, but bitches were not exempt from it. The faults varied from high stepping to crossing over, to overreaching, wide in front, close behind, none of which are efficient for the dog or pleasing to the eye for a judge. It was just as sad to see a dull and lifeless Pointer on the move, that might have had the correct feet placement, but their handler was almost dragging them around the ring with their head down. Very few exhibits use their tails on the move. Our first Pointer used to make us laugh every time we went out for a walk as it was constant like a clockwork toy, never missing a beat. We went on to realise this was part of the essence of the breed and we were lucky to have it. Pointers are meant to be an active gundog, with an alert appearance of strength, endurance and speed, a strong but lissom appearance, a gait that is smooth, covering plenty of ground with a driving hind action, while remaining graceful. With regard to presentation, walking in a ring with a dog and doing the bare minimum of holding the head and tail, really isn’t enough. It is a dog show and so presentation is key. What you did with a previous dog might not be enough with another; you need to put the work in, spend time practicing, take photos and review them to see what you can do to get the best from the dog you are currently showing. The practice will be worth it, especially with entry prices and cost of fuel to get to a show these days. Finishing on a high, Bee-sting tails are back in abundance – yeah - what a pleasure to see! The long thin ropey tails or the thick rods and the pump handles were missing from the ring today. What a joy to witness.

I did want to add about a dog I saw but didn’t get to critique because he was 3rd in a very strong Open class. Davigdor Flanders Field - the instant I saw him I was taken back to his great, great, great grandmother, Davigdor Jawa. He was the spit of her in male form. Then driving home, I had the image in my head of Statler & Waldorf from the Muppet Show (sorry kids you’ll have to Google that one), replaced by Des McGarry and David Tobin, laughing and shouting out Des’s famous saying “blood will out” and how true was that and to be witnessed here. After many generations and not line bred like expected from David’s past breeding, then for it to still come full circle, well done team Davigdor. Back in the day, I used to talk to both regularly on the phone and I know David valued Des’ advice very much, helping with direction and suitable breeding for his stock. I regret not keeping that up over the last decade with David after Des passed and now David too. Jonathan tells me that Flanders was one of Karen Sillince’s dogs before her recent passing too. I’m sure she too is looking down with a smile knowing how well he is being loved and cared for by Wendy Gordon and holding his own in the ring.

I would also like to give a shout out to team Fosse Data. Their innovation and use of technology has changed and improved the full show experience. People around the World knew the names of my winning dogs well before I had a chance to get home and study the catalogue. 1st - 4644 - Fydal Caprio at Salmonmist JW ShCM OSW ShCEx VW (Ms S R Philo)

What a pleasing way to start your day with a typey masculine O&W dog at 9 and half still holding his own, beautiful head with a well-defined stop, well placed ear of correct shape and texture, kind eye and expression, slight dish and perfect little turn of lip. Good length of neck with a nice little arc, which ran clean over the well laid back shoulders into the topline, which was firm and strong. Good amount of fore chest and a nice straight front, a little wider than desirable in chest, but great depth and spring of rib, just the right amount of length and slope to pasterns, nicely short coupled, good tail set, correct amount of turn of stifle, and short hocks. Moved with passion and was well presented on the day, a serious contender for the top award.

2nd - 4621 - Lowsmoor Crazy for You JW (Mrs A Lowe)

8 year old O&W with a slightly stronger head, still of good proportions, nice little ears, neck of good length, well boned, ribbed well back and with good spring, short coupled, good expanse of thigh, lovely short hocks.

1st - 4610 - Caithpoint Gie It Laldy (Miss F, Mrs C & Mr B Earl, Wheldon & Jones)

 Just what you want to see in young Pointer dog, he was there to have fun and enjoy his day and surroundings, and he certainly did, and the handler still managed to get the best from in little moments, enough to see his potential. Head already of good proportions, just needs to break a little more as he matures, good clean neck and of nice length, shoulders well placed, nice amount of fore chest, good oval bone, nice arched toes, ribbed well back, strong loin and already a well-muscled rear end.

2nd - 4604 - Zoalin Whiskey Glasses (Ms J & Miss K & Miss Z Brock)

A little plainer in head more along on parallel plains than I prefer, and still growing into his ears, good length of neck and return and length of upper arm, chest still developing as would be expected of a young dog, short coupled and strong loin, adequate turn of stifle.

1st - 4648 - Riowood Cherry Bomb (Miss H Senior)

Strong masculine head, with a well-defined stop, ears set high of correct shape and thickness, medium breadth skull, nice width to muzzle, a correct turn of lip, neck long and clean, shoulder laid back, adequate fore-chest, clean topline, short coupled, a little rounded in croup, good expanse of thigh, still a little naughty on the move, but there were moments of clam where it was correct and nice drive to it.

2nd - 4625 - Freebreeze Noel Coward (Mrs R Mason)

Lovely typey dog, much slower maturing than the winner, good amount of chiselling to the head and well pigmented points, kind eye and expression and of nice colour, long clean neck, would like a little more lay to shoulder, well ribbed and short strong loin, correct croup, great expanse to both 1st & 2nd thigh and well bent stifles with super short hocks.

Pleasing head and kind expression, lovely little well placed ears, good long neck with enough crest to it, good angles for and aft, great fore-chest and with the required infill too, chest deep and well sprung ribs that went well back, elbows in tight and directly under the withers, great expanse to thigh, and well-muscled, correct amount of rear angulation, lovely short bee-sting tail.

2nd - 4641 - Wilchrimane Florin to Olivesong JW (Mr C, Mrs J & Miss M Oliver)

In profile, his head looks like just my cup of tea, on closer inspection and probably me just being a little picky, his muzzle is a tad short and the back of skull a tad broader, and his ears a smidge bigger for his head size, which when looking front on changed the impression you get from the profile impression, still a nice head to compared to a lot, with a good stop and chiselling and nice dark pigment. Good length of neck and clean shoulders of good angles, well sprung ribs and short coupled, good expanse of thigh and the correct shape and curvature to the rear to complete the series of graceful curves.

1st - 4599 - Lundgarth Fly The Flag JW (Mrs S.e & Mrs S. Booth & Oddie)

18 month old O&W, another slow maturer compared to the juniors I had just seen, nice masculine head with a little dish and strong stop, nice dark pigment, lovely small well placed ears of correct shape and thickness, correct length of neck and sufficient arc, good shoulder angles, well sprung ribs, strong coupled, nice expanse of thigh and adequate turn of stifle, a smidge more rear angulation would finish the overall picture, still with short hocks and moved well.

On the stack he presented a nice picture of balance and type, sweet head with a kind expression and pronounced occiput, long clean neck, too narrow in front, and lacked the spring of rib, short coupled and adequate rear angulation, he had drive but lacked the front movement to match it.

2 year old B&W dog from the same kennel as the winner of the last class and the same sire, but completely different in type, good length of muzzle and in proportion to length of skull, nice chiselling under the eyes, a little more lip than I use to but not excessive and didn’t distract from a nice head, well placed ears, good length of neck, good angles fore and aft, nice amount of width to chest, nicely sprung ribs, short coupled, well bent stifles.

2nd - 4659 - Harvestslade Fire And Ice through Merynjen JW (Mrs K D Wilcox)

Very masculine O&W dog, strong head, a little broader than I like, lovely turn of lip, super dark pigmentation, lovely long neck, good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, nice oval bone, and well arched feet, well sprung ribs, a little too arched over the loin for me, great expanse of thigh and well bent stifles.

1st - 4654 - Sharnphilly Black Abbott JW (Mr A Swannell)

It was clear that 1st & 2nd were related, and interesting to see how afterwards, a sire who is clearly leaving his mark on the breed. Quite possibly on another day they could have been swapped around. Instant head pleaser, perfect proportions of skull to muzzle length, well-defined stop, just the right amount of pronounced occiput, perfect turn of lip, kind eye and expression, and right amount of chiselling under the eye, and the required dish, nostrils wide and soft, ears set high and close to head, of nice size and shape. Neck with enough arch and length, lay of shoulder good and enough return of upper arm, correct oval bone, good width to chest and well sprung ribs, short strong loin, well bent stifles, good expanse of thigh and short hocks, super bee sting tail.

2nd - 4632 - Laveto Remember When (Mr & Mrs L Millett)

2 year old B&W dog, a fraction smaller than the winner but all in good proportion and balance, another pleasing head with good balance and proportions, strong stop and a kind eye and expression, good chiselling under the eye and a pronounced occiput, the lip line was ever slightly longer than the winner, but definitely not pendulous, and a nice little dish, ear set a fraction lower. Strong muscular neck with good length and crest, strong and clean topline, good amount of fore-chest and adequate width for the size of dog, well sprung ribs and a short strong loin, well bent stifles and short hocks. Good tail set and another super bee sting tail and moved well.

3rd - 4653 - Teisgol Magic (Mr P R & Mrs D E & Mrs L & Miss J G Stilgoe & Stilgoe & Fox & Fox)

4th - 4605 - Hawkfield Happy Feet at Oramiss JW (Mrs L Clinton)

A very strong class, with a mix of dogs and types, all presenting different aspects of the breed, where some excelled in one area and not so much in another and vice versa, and how well the handler showed the best of the dog on the day.

1st - 4647 - De Las Navazuelas Stormcloud at Ridanflight (Imp ESP) (Mr S Rose)

This dog has an instant appeal on the stack, he truly represents the strong but lissom appearance and the series of graceful curves, all while remaining masculine. His head is of nice proportions, don’t be fooled by the long black marking down his muzzle and think it is longer than it should be, it’s not the proportions are correct, a well-defined stop and clean cheeks, and a nice amount of chiselling, all finish the head of nicely, this is the length of neck with good arch I like to see, and clean into the shoulders which is well laid back, yes I would like a better return of upper arm, nice oval bone and good length and slope to pasterns, his feet are well arched and cushioned, though I would prefer a little more oval shape to them. His chest deep, and the slight curvature in his underline from his chest to his loin then into his sweeping turn of stifle all add to his quality, his ribs were well back and he has a strong topline, his correct croup and tail set missing from many, huge expanse of thigh and well let down hocks.

2nd - 4656 - Lakewinds Benchmark (Imp AUS) (Ms T Watkins)

So much to like about this dog, and so much reminded me of dogs we have had or bred or dogs from the past I admired, which is why 1st & 2nd were constantly swapping in my mind. He is a masculine O&W, with a nice head piece of medium breadth, well set ears, and a nice turn of lip and wide nostrils, he didn’t draw me in with his eyes and expression like my own dogs do where you feel like you’ve seen or touched the soul of the dog in that instant. His neck is strong and muscular of good length, enough lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, a good set of ribs which are well sprung, short coupled with a strong back and a clean topline. Well bent stifles and short hocks, moved with ease.

1st - 4639 - Sh Ch Chesterhope One Way Ticket (ai) (Imp NZL) (Miss Oddie)

There is an instant appeal for this B&W dog as soon as he walked in the ring, then once presented the picture he presents, aristocratic, symmetrical, a series of graceful curves, balance, nothing coarse, nothing exaggerated. At just 4 years old he’s just coming into his prime, he has the sweetest of heads and expressions while reamining masculine, well-defined stop, pronounced occiput, high set ears, a gentle dish, wide and moist nostrils, his arc to lip ever so slightly longer than my perfection (his son winner of PGD was closer to my ideal) but this did not distract form the overall quality of the head. The length and strength to his neck, in complete balance to the rest of the dog, as is his width of chest, good return of upper arm and length, good oval bone and tidy feet, nice spring of rib, a clean and strong topline, short coupled, well bent stifles and short hocks, and I can see where the bee sting tails are coming from, his is great, he moved with passion, if being ultra critical his tail carriage was ever so slightly above the level of the back, but it didn’t distract you from the picture he presents on the move. It was nice to finally put an image of a dog to a name, as I’ve entered him into my pedigree database as a sire, and to see his effect on the breed today in some of my other placings. DCC.

2nd - 4642 - Sh Ch Teisgol Love Is in The Air ShCEx (Miss M E, Mr P R & Mrs D E Oliver & Stilgoe)

An appealing O&W dog, very well presented by his handler the two together were in tune, he has a lovely balance to him, his head is appealing and has a good stop, lovely lacy ears that were well set and of correct shape and thickness, he had a kind eye and expression, nice length of neck and well placed shoulders, good spring of rib that were well back, short coupled with a strong loin, nice expanse of thigh and short hocks and a nice picture on the move. It was a pleasure to award him 2nd in a class full of quality and then to call him back in the ring during the challenge for the RDCC.

6 year old solid black bitch, I think form memory today was a first for me getting to judge 2 solids at a champ show in the UK, she was well presented and a picture of a series of graceful curves, very feminine head, though a little lean, lovely arch to her neck that was of good length, she had good fore-chest, and a nice slope and length to pastern, a clean top line and well bent stifles.

Wow, this lovely girl fills your eye as soon as she walked in the ring, my first impression was I think I’ve found my CC winner in the first bitch class of the day. She is so up my street and full of quality, very pretty and feminine head of nice balanced proportions, good amount of stop, enough pronounce to occiput, well placed ears, plenty of chiselling and a kind eye. Long neck and enough arc, well placed shoulders and good return of upper arm, nice amount of fore-chest with good width, good oval bone and perfect pasterns and feet, well sprung ribs that went far back, very strong short loin with that little arch, balanced well bent stifles with great expanse of thigh with muscles to match. Graceful movement. Surprised she isn’t made up, though the strength of the competition to come meant hard decision in that moment on that day, pleased to award her BVIB.

Instantly recognisable stamp of this kennel, elegant and graceful, definitely a series of graceful curves, pretty feminine head, kind expression, well placed ears, good length of neck, correct oval bone, well sprung ribs, well bent stifles.

What a gorgeous young puppy, and totally unexpected from this kennel in the sense that when I was showing their kennel seemed to lean more towards the Pennine type, to me this is far from that. Super feminine head, well-defined stop, high set ears, good amount of chiselling, nice little dish, lovely arc to lip, good clean neck of nice length, well placed shoulders, good amount of ribbing, super sweep to stifle and right amount of rear angulation, moved well for a baby, a quality and promising youngster.

My instant thought was you’ve just caused a problem for my veteran bitch winner, wow so pretty and feminine the sweetest of faces and expressions, super little dish, good amount of stop, lovely arc to the lip, good length to neck, perfect angles fore and aft, nice amount of fore chest, well bent stifles, good expanse of 1st & 2nd thigh, short hocks, overall, a lovely balanced picture and expertly presented. I’m sure she will have a bright future. BPIB.

2nd - 4623 - Freebreeze Gertrude Stein at Luneville (Mr N J & Mrs K M Macmanus)

Pretty B&W bitch, good amount of work to the head, elegant neck, clean over the shoulders into a solid topline, chest still developing, and a little longer cast than the winner, probably the best rear construction I’ve seen from this kennel, nice croup and tail set, fabulous bend of stifle, great 1st & 2nd thigh, good amount of rear angulation, pleasing flowing lines, moved well.

Very pretty O&W bitch super feminine, and a head piece similar in type to the bitches that were around when we got our foundation bitch. Good amount of stop, pronounced occiput, lovely lacy ears of correct shape and texture and set high, nice dark pigment to the nose and eye rims, lovely turn of lip, clean neck and good shoulders, well sprung ribs and short coupled, good bend of stifle.

A nice, honest bitch, perfectly formed and balanced, pretty head of nice proportions, enough length of neck, and good shoulders, nice depth to chest and spring to ribs, short strong loin and well bent stifles.

B&W bitch nice typey and elegant, pretty head with good amount of work, lovely arch to neck, correct oval bone, enough slope and length to pasterns, clean topline, good amount of rear angulation and well bent stifles, lovely bee sting tail.

2nd - 4619 - Fleurfield Betty Barclay (Mrs M & Mrs J & Mrs H Hinton & Luke & Leman)

Pretty girl with a kind expression, nice little dish, good length of neck, nice angles fore and aft, feet a little round but well arched and cushioned, good spring of rib and enough bend to stifle, a little rounded in croup and tail set a smidge low, short hocks, moved well.

When I first saw these 2 girls stood together, my first impression was of 2 sisters from the Lynwater kennel from 30 years ago, (Sh Ch Lynwater Roulette of Crookrise & L. Rummy of C.), and on first impression these two seem like peas in a pod too. This one is a little slower on the maturing stakes, head ever so slightly plainer than her sisters, and doesn’t have the strength of topline to her sister or the rear assembly to match, but on the move her topline was beautiful, and she had drive and reach. I’m sure she will catch up in her own time and swap places in the future.

What a beautiful Li&W bitch, super depth and richness to her coat colour, with good depth to the pigment to her nose and eye rims, pretty head with a good dish, nice amount of stop, kind eye and expression, and good turn of lip, super neck with lovely little arch, nice lay of shoulder, good amount of fore-chest, great strength and length and slope to her pasterns, clean and solid topline, short coupled, nice bend to stifle, short hocks, moved very well.

Another super pretty O&W girl, also reminded me of our foundation bitch, pleasing head of nice proportions, well-defined stop, kind eye and expression, super little turn to her lip, clean neck of good length, good angles fore and aft, nice oval bone, well sprung ribs, and well bent stifles, and another with a nice short tail.

Pleasing head and expression, with enough stop and dish, elegant neck, clean smooth topline, good angles fore and aft, good bend of stifle, moved well.

They keep coming today - these very pretty O&W bitches, and another surprise when I was showing this kennel was mainly blanket B&W with a little more substance from memory. This girl had all the elegance and grace you could ask for from a Pointer bitch, she had the work in her head with all the femininity required, her neck was lean and long with just that little crest, it sprung out of well-placed shoulders, and good return of upper arm, her elbows were well placed directly under her withers, she had the required slope and length of pastern and well arched toes, she had a good spring of rib and short loin, nice bend of stifle and short hocks, and she moved with ease, and it gave me great pleasure to award her the RBCC.

2nd - 4616 - Hawkfield Happy Times JW (Ms W Gordon)

I think this girl is probably my favourite from this kennel. She had the stamp of the kennel but with something else, maybe a little more attitude in the way she carried herself and held her own, beautiful strong head, well-defined stop, nice chiselling under the eyes, dark pigment to the nose and eye rims, super little crest to her neck, well placed shoulders, good forechest and infill and width, nice oval bone and pasterns, good amount of ribs and far back, clean topline, good amount of rear angulation and well bent stifles, and bee-sting tail. Just a shame she come up against an inform bitch who took the class today.

1st - 4587 - Int/Fin Ch Wilchrimane Frangipani WW’25 (Ms M Bäck)

Breathtaking beauty and presence this super quality girl has, she has the full package, she instantly fills your eye on the stack, everything the breed standard tells you a pointer should be especially in those earlier statements she has in abundance, symmetry, aristocratic, a strong but lissom appearance, a series of graceful curves, this is it. Her head is feminine, with balanced proportions, well-defined stop, skull of medium breadth, her ears set high and thin leathers, her eyes are kind and expressional so much so they draw you in, she has a lovely little turn of lip, her neck is strong and long and muscular all while remaining elegant with that touch of an arch, and sprung from some of the best placed shoulders and return of upper arm of correct length, and elbows in tight and directly under the withers, right amount of oval bone and slope and length to pasterns, correct shape to feet with well arched toes and good padding, she has the best forechest and it doesn’t fade away like some do, all adding to the series of curves, her tuck up is of a nice even and gentle slope up, and the beautiful line continues around under the loin to her well angulated rear construction and well bent stifles, her expanse of 1st & 2nd thigh is voluptuous, and finishing of her curves from her rear and down to her hocks, which are short and straight, her topline strong and clean her croup short and gentle, her tail short and straight. Then she moves and commands the ring she did, elegant and graceful, the head carriage of nobility, the clean topline she held with ease and grace, the drive from behind was powerful, the reach in front divine and full extend. The coordination between handler and dog was unparalleled and in synch, the harmony and trust was a joy to witness, and the pleasure to award her the BCC and BOB, and to see she went on to get shortlisted in a very strong group was a delight, she looked at home in the big ring.

2nd - 4590 - Fowington Lar Ti Dar at Deadaway SGWC (Mrs J M Blowers)

Another beautiful O&W bitch, graceful and curvy, slightly stronger head than the winner, with good stop, and a nice little dish, long clean neck, good amount of fore chest, nice oval bone and slope to pasterns, well sprung ribs, strong loin, well bent stifles with good amount of rear angulation, and so well-muscled and firm, good mover too. She was a strong challenger when she was called back in for the RBCC decision, just losing out on this occasion to the Limit Bitch winner who was inform today.
