Bath Canine Society

Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer

Having re-read my critique prior to publishing, I must apologise for any repetition. My big bug bear is tailsets! Our forbearers wrote the standard for a reason. Tailsets should have ‘a slight slope from croup to base of tail’ - there are a few too many where this isn’t the case, and the tail comes straight off the back.

Veteran Dog 3/0

1. Jomeel Monkey Wrench (Mr M A & Ms C Staley) l/w male, good shape and size, clean head of good proportions, strong neck and well laid shoulders, short backed and good shape to rear quarters, moved in straight lines, but just found him a bit lack lustre on the day 2. Brooke Will Do It Through Milcook (Mr A & Mr R Cook & Lamb) l/w bigger cast male than 1, pleasing head and good front, preferred topline of 1 today, strong behind, but didn’t show the drive on the move I was hoping for.

Minor Puppy Dog 2/0

1.Jomeel Quicksilver (Mr M A & Ms C Staley) Liked the first impression of this young l/w boy. Good shape and size, short backed and good topline to him, well placed tail and liked his angles behind with a good turn of stifle, hopefully eye will darken with age, very settled on the move for his age, showing nice straight lines to and fro and plenty of reach in front and drive behind, BP 2. Northern Skiddaw (Mr K & Miss F Eeles & Scarratt) Raw youngster who definitely needs time to settle and learn his craft. Good overall shape to him, good head shape and clean front, needs to body out, moved ok when settled, but not as finished as 1.

Puppy Dog 2/0

1. Jomeel Quicksilver (Mr M A & Ms C Staley) As per MPD 2.Northern Skiddaw (Mr K & Miss F Eeles & Scarratt) As per MPD

Junior Dog 1/0

1. Kazanpaul Sherbert Dip (Miss D Jones) Finer in head than I would prefer, almost continental in shape and size, strong in neck with a good length, correct shoulders and front, slightly longer cast than I would like, strong loin and well muscled behind with strong thighs and a good turn to stifle. On the move he showed his immaturity, tended to lift his feet rather than push off them, I’m sure he’ll settle down and the driving action will come.

Limit Dog 5/1

1. Seasham Show Me The Way JW (Mr L C & Miss S M Cooke & Hammond) Clean cut male of a good size and overall shape, liked his head shape both in profile and head on, lovely kind eye, clean neck set on well laid shoulders, straight front legs and tight feet, deep in rib and well laid back, strong muscled loin, I’m nit picking when I say his tail set when stacked comes straight off his back without the slight slope from croup to base of tail. Found him in super harsh coat, well muscled rear which allowed him to power around the ring, 2. Agdenusher Mulberry (Mrs S & Mr A Mapes) Up to size, square ‘Standing over plenty of ground’. Squarer in muzzle than 1, good head planes, moderately long neck and good shoulders, deep in chest and short backed, well muscled loin and good angles to his rear, found him in good coat, short and harsh to the touch, moves ok, straight and true both in profile and on the away and back, but not showing the driving action of 1 today.

Open Dog 7/1

1. Sh Ch Orchidstar Bolts of Speed (Mrs Z M Sielski) Liked both 1 and 2 as they entered the ring, both scream GSPs. Good head, not overly heavy, but all male, strong neck of good length set on well laid shoulders, deep in chest with well sprung ribs, short in back and strong in loin, for me both 1 and 2 have their tails set a tad too high, found this boy in good coat, and his rear has well muscled thighs with stifles went bent, Liked his movement, straight and true and showing excellent reach in front and drive behind, Pleased to award him the DCC and BOB. 2. Sh Ch Tequesta Poldark JW (Mrs L Adams) Lighter l/w ticked than 1, another with good overall size, when stood naturally he has a lovely shape to him, short backed and not over extended behind. Clean cut in head and of a good shape, good neck and shoulders, correct forechest and deep, well sprung rib, muscled loin, same applies to his tailset as 1, well muscled behind and on the day he moved ok, but felt he could give more, not the overall drive of 1. Enough about him though to allow me to award him the RCC.

Special Beginners 4/2

1. Kazanpaul Parmaviolet (Mrs L & Mr A Gimbert) Sweet bitch on the finer side, still needs to mature up to reach potential, head still needs to fill out, finer in muzzle than I would like, good neck and front, short backed, but when stacked has a slight roach (which I hope will level itself out over time). Again rear needs time to develop, found her in super harsh coat, moved well for her age and did enough to win the class. BSB. 2 Northern Skiddaw (Mr K & Miss F Eeles & Scarratt) 2nd MPD.

Veteran Bitch 2/0

1.Sperant Pamplemousse (Miss L E Merritt) l/w 7 1/2 yr old bitch of a good size, but slightly longer cast than I would prefer, pleasing head with lovely eye, good neck and shoulders, deep in rib and strong well muscled loin, good tailset, liked her angles behind with a correct turn to stifle, showing her age on the move, straight lines going and coming towards, lacking a bit of oomph, but just edged out the dog in the Veteran challenge BV 2. Taftazini Laura Byding of Patterscourt (Mrs & Miss Attwood & Turner) Better mover than 1, but when stacked she presents too round a rump in profile, good head, and correct front assembly, good rib, and well muscled rear, but too rounded at croup, moved well with drive.

Puppy Bitch 1/0

1. Orchidstar Ruby Sunday (Mrs D & Mr S Hill) Very fine bitch who needs time, beautiful feminine head, found her a tad upright in front when stacked, ribs deepening nicely for age, wee bit long in body for me, and again tailset straight off the back with no slight slope from croup to base of tail, good angles behind and muscling up nicely for age, still a work in progress on the move. Glimpses of good driving action and held her topline well.

Junior Bitch 4/1

1.Seasham Thrill Me at Mannlicher (Ms K Joy) Pleasing shape to this young bitch, very feminine head with soft expression, strong neck and well laid shoulder, rib deep and down to elbow, well sprung rib and laid back into a strong, short loin, firm topline and good tailset, super harsh coat, liked her angles behind with a correct turn to stifle, moved with ease, straight and true, would just like another inch all over on her. 2. Kazanpaul Parmaviolet (Mrs L & Mr A Gimbert) 1st Special Beginner

Yearling Bitch 4/2

1. Winterwell Monet’s Magic of Fayemm (ai) (Mr E & Mrs L Lockett) Lovely overall shape to this solid liver bitch, my notes scream, correct tail set and NOT straight off the back, good head shape, eyes still need to darken slightly more, correct front assembly, deep in rib and correct firm topline, presents a good shape when stacked and with a strong, correctly angled rear quarters, moved well, showing reach in front and drive behind. 2. Saskie Z Ranskeho Letiste (Imp Cze) (Miss V Perkin) 3rd in Junior, larger cast l/w ticked bitch. Pleasing shape when stood, clean head with good expression, good front and straight in topline, well developed rear, but just not movement of 1 on the day.

Novice Bitch 2/0

1. Seasham Thrill Me at Mannlicher (Ms K Joy) 1st Junior bitch. 2. Saskie Z Ranskeho Letiste (Imp Cze) (Miss V Perkins) 2nd Yearling bitch.

Post Graduate Bitch 3/1

1. Balvenie Fiddle Diddle JW (Mrs R Schoneville) l/w bitch good shape and substance, pleasing head both in profile and head on, good eye of correct shape, clean neck leading to well placed shoulders, well sprung ribs and level firm topline, short coupled, strong well muscled thighs and good turn to stifle, found her in good harsh coat, moved with ease around the ring. 2. Newtonbriar Pure Bliss (Mr N & Ms W Powell & Tarrant) Rangier solid liver, good overall shape, slighter heavier in head than I would normally like, good rib and firm topline, well placed tailset, well muscled behind, moved ok, but preferred drive of 1 on the away.

Limit Bitch 7/0

1. Zakova Aria (Mrs S E Warrington) Loved this l/w bitch when she came into the ring, all GSP, just my type, presented a lovely picture when stacked, correct shape and size, beautiful head with melting expression and lovely dark eye, clean neck and correct through front, straight front legs set on tight feet, firm topline, short coupled and good tailset, super muscled thigh, with well let down hocks, found her in harsh coat, lovely movement in profile and straight lines on the away and back. Pleased to award her 1st in a strong class. 2. Lagopusmoor Black Mandala On Elfrindew (M & T Dodd & Hayes) Although not normally a lover of solid blacks, once I had my hands on her I could see her qualities, clean head of pleasing shape and size, good through neck and shoulders, good rib and well muscled loin, just preferred 1’s topline and tailset, well muscled behind and another in super harsh coat, moved with good reach in front and drive behind.

Open Bitch 7/1

1.Sh Ch Keigame Mystique Aurora JW (Mrs C & Mr K Adams) A cracking class as one would expect from Open, Loved this bitch from the onset, super head shape with lovely kind eye, strong neck and correct front assembly, deep, well sprung rib and short firm back with correct tailset, strong through loin and well muscled behind, found her in the best of coats, won this class on her powerful yet effortless movement. Pleased to award her the BCC and pushed the dog close for BoB. 2.Sh Ch Winterwell Little Itch at Karitagan (Miss K Bunker) Last time I judged the breed I gave this cracking bitch BP and pleased to say she’s not quashed my expectations, lovely head and expression, clean through front and another with the correct body shape and size, good topline and correct tailset, found her full of muscle behind, would just have liked a bit more oomph about her when on the move today. Still pleased to call her back in for the RCC. 3. Sh Ch Ankerwycke Silk Stockings (Mrs L, Mr I & Mr F Elliott) Honourable mention as this is the best I’ve seen this bitch look, lovely shape and size and screams GSP. Just the star qualities of 1 & 2 today stopped her getting into the top honours.
