I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging and was delighted to have drawn what I believe was the top entry in the Gundog Group. I was equally pleased with the overall quality of the entry, with many exhibits showing excellent breed type, sound construction and the lovely temperaments for which the Golden Retriever is renowned. It was encouraging to see a move away from the overly long, low and heavy type, with many dogs and bitches presenting a more moderate, balanced and athletic picture.

My thanks go to Wendy, who stewarded the day with great professionalism and efficiency, managing the ring single-handedly with a calm and helpful approach.

I was particularly pleased to see an improvement in tail carriage overall, with high or “gay” tails now very much in the minority. This is an area where progress is encouraging and one that should continue to be valued, as correct carriage is an important part of the breed’s overall balance and outline.

One point of concern, however, was elbow placement. Elbows should fit neatly against the brisket, and this relies on sufficient heart room and correct chest development, as well as having length and placement of upper arm. Breeders should consider this.

MP Dog (8-3)

When judging puppies, I always look for exhibits that are appropriate for their age rather than over-developed. Golden Retrievers are a slow-maturing breed, and youngsters should retain scope to develop naturally.

A promising class of youngsters with good coats throughout. As expected at this age, they were all at varying stages of development, and I am sure they will continue to mature at their own pace.

1st – Foreman's Ambersun Another Adventure (AI)
A very typical youngster who presents an attractive and balanced outline. He stands correctly over his front and has pleasing proportions throughout. His well-chiselled head is complemented by dark pigmentation and a kind expression. He has a clean neck of good length flowing into well-laid shoulders with a pleasing return of upper arm. His elbows are well fitting, front straight, pasterns correct and topline level. Body proportions are appropriate for his age, with good spring of rib and correct coupling. His well-constructed hindquarters, with good bend of stifle and well-let-down hocks, complete a balanced picture. Although somewhat erratic on the move today, he possesses a quality rich golden double coat and has much to admire.

2nd – Evans' Mardargold Trick or Treat
A cream youngster of good substance with a thick, dense double coat and plenty of bone. He has a masculine head with kind expression, dark eye and good pigmentation. His strong neck flows into well-laid shoulders, although I would prefer a little more return of upper arm, which may well develop with maturity. He stands on straight legs, good feet, a firm topline, well-sprung ribs and good coupling. His hindquarters are well angulated with good depth of thigh, and he should continue to develop well.

1st – Salceanu's Trubliss Do It My Way
A pleasing youngster who appealed for his overall balance and correct stage of development. He is of good size with sufficient length of leg and is well constructed throughout. His head is balanced with a pleasant expression, dark pigmentation and correct proportions between skull and muzzle. He has a clean neck flowing into well-laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Although a little loose in elbow at present, he has straight forelegs, correct bone and cat like feet. His back is of pleasing length, his rear angulation correct and his coat entirely appropriate for his age. On the move he was somewhat loose and erratic, at times losing his topline, but these are attributes that should strengthen with maturity and sensible conditioning.

2nd – Gerhold's Navilis Shchedryk (Imp Ukr) JW
A very strong and substantial youngster, presented in a profuse, dense double coat. He has a strong masculine head with good pigmentation. His neck could be cleaner, although it is well set into correctly placed shoulders. He has big bone, a firm topline and well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle, excellent depth of first and second thigh and well-let-down hocks. Unfortunately, he was carrying too much weight today, which adversely affected his movement, causing him to roll and lose his topline. Expertly handled throughout.

1st – Jackson-Haines' Leighsham Sweeney Todd Best Junior
A youngster who immediately caught my eye and clearly stood out in the class. He is a calm, well-schooled dog with a lovely temperament and presents a balanced outline, showing the correct degree of development for his age. He has a strong masculine head, a pleasing expression and good dark pigmentation. He has good reach of neck into well-laid shoulders with correct return of upper arm. His forelegs are placed correctly under the body and straight with correct bone and pasterns, his ribs well sprung and his back strong and level. His hindquarters are correctly constructed and he carries the appropriate amount of coat for his age. He moved freely with good reach in front and positive drive from behind to secure the class.

2nd – Beck's Priestside Hungry Heart in Beinangus
I would have preferred a little more length of leg to complete the picture, but this is nevertheless a good youngster and still has time to develop with many good breed characteristics. He has a double coat, a pleasing head with correct skull and ear placement, and a strong neck flowing into well-laid shoulders. He is well boned with good pasterns and neat cat-like feet. His hindquarters are well angulated, with good depth of thigh and well-let-down hocks, Strong through the topline, with correct tail set and carriage completing a harmonious silhouette on the move..

1st Birkin-Green & Gripton's Louellabrook Atlantic Star with Sansue JW
A quality young dog of outstanding breed type and moderation (meant as highest praise), presenting a most pleasing well put together dog with a balanced outline. So correctly constructed throughout that it is difficult to find fault, with ideal proportions, good length of leg, correct body length and excellent overall balance. Carries the correct amount of cream double coat of good texture. Masculine head with pleasing balance between skull and muzzle, correct stop, dark pigmentation and a kind expression. Clean neck of good length flowing into well-laid shoulders with excellent return of upper arm. Sound forequarters with strong pasterns and tight cat-like feet. Well-sprung ribs, correct coupling and beautifully made hindquarters, completed by correct tail set and carriage. What particularly impressed was his relaxed, unassuming temperament and effortless movement, covering the ground with true reach and positive drive while maintaining his outline throughout. Still a young dog but so full of of quality, and has all the attributes to mature into an outstanding adult. A thoroughly deserving winner of the CC.

Another quality young dog with many excellent breed characteristics, although not quite possessing the refinement and overall balance of the winner on the day. Presented in an excellent bright mid-gold double coat with attractive cream feathering. Strong masculine head with good chiselling. Good neck, although I would have preferred slightly more forequarter angulation. Stands straight in front with plenty of bone, strong pasterns and neat, tight catlike feet. Well-sprung ribs, firm level topline and well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle, deep thighs and well-let-down hocks. Moved freely and smoothly with good drive, a youngster with a very promising future.

A compact, well-balanced dog with a good light gold double coat and correct proportions, having a pleasing height-to-length ratio and correct body length. His muzzle could be stronger with a more defined stop, but he has a good skull, correct ear set and a particularly gentle expression—very much a dog that "smiles" at you. Good reach of neck with a slight crest flowing into well-laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Straight front, correct pasterns and tight cat-like feet. Well-sprung ribs, correctly made hindquarters, Moved truly with good carriage and free-flowing action.

2nd Forrest's Orlagold Major Tom
A strong, masculine dog with plenty of substance and bone, of good size, presented in a double coat. Strong head with good dark pigmentation and a well-set neck. I would prefer slightly more forequarter angulation to provide better balance, as he has well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle, deep thighs and well-let-down hocks. Strong, level topline. His tail carriage was rather high on the move today, but he nevertheless moved freely and covered the ground well.

Two very different types headed this class. I preferred the overall balance and proportions of the winner, who presents a harmonious outline and is so well put together throughout. His neck flows cleanly into his withers and firm topline, which he maintained well in profile on the move, his profile movement is balanced and efficient, demonstrating his overall sound construction. Masculine head with good skull, defined stop, deep muzzle, dark pigmentation and a pleasing expression. Good reach of neck, well-laid shoulders and return of upper arm, with corresponding balance in the hindquarters. Well-sprung ribs and presented in an excellent cream double coat.

2nd Scott-Briggs's Largymore Ravagier JW
A very typical dog shown in an excellent rich gold double coat. Slightly shorter on the leg than the winner. Masculine head with pleasing balance between skull and muzzle, defined stop, excellent pigmentation and a kind, gentle expression. Strong, well-set neck, balanced angulation fore and aft, depth and length of rib, and well-developed hindquarters with deep thighs. Presented in excellent muscular condition. Moved out freely with good reach and drive and gave a sound performance.

A lovely class with real depth of quality, headed by two excellent dogs who showed themselves to great advantage and both possessing the most delightful, extrovert and gentle temperaments.

1st Birkin-Green & Gripton's Sansue Love Flame (Imp)
A masculine dog displaying quality without any exaggeration. Excellent head with correct skull, balanced muzzle, defined stop, good chiselling, dark kind eye and a gentle expression. Good reach of neck flowing into well-laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. I particularly liked his length of visible leg and well proportioned length of body, which contributes to his balanced outline. Correct bone, strong pasterns and tight cat-like feet. well-sprung ribs, correct length of back and a firm, level topline. Nicely made hindquarters and moved out freely with an easy, ground-covering stride while maintaining his outline. A little out of coat today, but a dog of considerable quality with much to admire.

2nd McGugan's Westlow The Legend of Fingal to Invergoil Culzean
Another quality young dog, presented in a rich mid-gold double coat in excellent condition. Typical masculine head with pleasing balance, dark eye and a gentle expression. Alert and attentive to his handler, giving an excellent performance and moving with a smooth, effortless gait while maintaining his topline and correct tail carriage. Strong, clean neck, balanced angulation fore and aft, correct bone, strong pasterns and neat cat-like feet. Well-ribbed with a firm, level topline and well-made quarters. a very promising dog of obvious quality.

Headed by two quality dogs, with the winner taking the class on his freer, more balanced movement. A well-proportioned dog presented in a good light gold double coat. Pleasing outline with balanced angulation, strong level topline, correct tail set, good depth and spring of rib and close coupling. Masculine head with a dark eye, correct skull and defined stop. Well-set neck flowing into balanced forequarters, straight front, correct bone and neat cat-like feet. Strong through the loin with well-made hindquarters. Moved out freely, maintaining his outline and covering the ground with ease.

2nd Millington's Golmas Guard of Honour at Jarabees JW
Another quality dog, presented in a rich gold double coat of excellent texture, with a slight wave. Attractive head with a kind expression, dark eye, good balance between skull and muzzle, defined stop and correctly set ears. Well-set neck flowing into well-laid shoulders, with good bone, a firm level topline, correct croup and tail set. Well-made hindquarters with good bend of stifle and well-let-down hocks. He just lost out on movement today, as although his footfall was correct, he tended to roll slightly. Nevertheless, a quality exhibit with much to admire.

A strong class of four quality dogs, whose I am sure often exchange places. 

1st Law's Sh Ch Sandti Back of The Net
A dog who simply oozes breed type and presents a most typical outline. Shown in a lovely bright gold double coat and masculine without any exaggeration. Typical head with good chiselling, balanced proportions and a particularly gentle expression. Good reach of neck flowing into well-laid shoulders with correct return of upper arm. Straight front, strong level topline, good depth and spring of rib, strong loin and well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle, deep thighs and well-let-down hocks. Moved truly with effortless reach and drive, maintaining his outline throughout, and caught my eye from the moment he entered the ring. A very worthy Res CC.

2nd Farkas' Tikotta Infinity
A cream dog presented in a profuse double coat which would have benefited from a little more preparation. Masculine in outlook with a pleasing, well-chiselled head, good strength of skull and muzzle without exaggeration, defined stop and a dark, gentle eye. Strong neck, balanced angulation fore and aft, firm level topline and well-made quarters. Moved very well in profile with animation and a light, springy action, although a little loose in front on this occasion.

Presented in a good, dense light gold double coat. Moved out freely with excellent reach and drive, maintaining a balanced outline throughout.

Another quality veteran, full of maturity and substance, presented in an excellent double coat with an attractive slight wave. Masculine head with good strength of skull and muzzle and a particularly gentle expression. Strong neck, good depth and spring of rib, well-made hindquarters and correct tail set. I preferred the shorter back and front construction of the winner, but he moved out well with correct footfall and showed himself to good advantage throughout.

Another nice young bitch with much to admire. I preferred the overall balance and length of leg of the winner today. Strong, well-set neck, plenty of substance for her age, straight front and neat, tight feet. Well-developed hindquarters and moved freely with a smooth, balanced gait and correct footfall.

A lovely class headed by two quality, feminine bitches, and I was splitting hairs between them. The winner was the steadier mover on the day, which ultimately decided the placings. She presents a clean, balanced outline with pleasing proportions. Feminine head with a gentle expression, good reach of neck flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders with good return of upper arm, and showing forechest. Correct bone, well-sprung ribs, firm level topline and well-made hindquarters with good depth of thigh. Moved out freely, maintaining her outline throughout to take the class.

Well-sprung ribs, firm level topline and presented in an excellent quality double coat. Slightly more angulated behind than I would prefer.

Pretty head with a kind dark eye and gentle expression. Correct forehand construction, well-sprung ribs and good body development. Well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle and depth of thigh. Correct bone and substance throughout. Moved with a fluent, ground-covering action.

Feminine head with good balance between skull and muzzle, dark pigmentation and a kind expression, although I just preferred the head of the winner. Pleasing outline with good length of leg, balanced forehand construction, well-sprung ribs and a firm level topline. Well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle and depth of thigh. Moved freely and true with a fluent, ground-covering action, making this a close decision between two quality bitches.

Another lovely quality bitch with plenty of personality and much to admire. I actually preferred her scope, but she still needs a little more time to finish - she is absolutely correct for her age. A very feminine, outgoing bitch with an alert, happy expression. Good reach of neck flowing into well-constructed forequarters with neat elbows. Well-sprung ribs, good length of ribbing, firm topline and correct tail set. Well-developed hindquarters with good bend of stifle and well-let-down hocks. Presented in a lovely light gold double coat and moved with an effortless, ground-covering action, gliding around the ring. A close decision between two quality exhibits.

Neck of good length with a pleasing crest flowing into well-laid shoulders. Stands true in front with correct bone, strong pasterns and neat cat-like feet. Well-sprung ribs, level topline and well-made hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Held her outline beautifully on the move, covering the ground with effortless reach and positive drive. A most worthy winner and considered her for honours today.

 Another lovely quality bitch with much to admire. She has pleasing angulation fore and aft, giving a balanced and typical outline, I preferred the shorter back the winner. Feminine head with a kind expression and dark eye. Stands true in front with strong pasterns and neat feet. level topline, well-ribbed body and well-constructed hindquarters. Moved freely and soundly with a smooth, ground-covering action.

1ST Mcfarlane’s Bluebraes Jacobite Lass. I really liked this typical, quality bitch who immediately appealed for her happy, relaxed and outgoing temperament. Beautifully constructed throughout, she presents a picture of balance, moderation and correct breed type, with everything flowing harmoniously from head to tail. There is little to fault in her overall conformation, and this was reflected in her effortless, ground-covering movement which really sealed the picture today.
