Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas

Thank you to the NGA for inviting me to judge Hungarian Wirehaired Vizslas and for the efficient way the show was run. Thank you to my stewards who organised the ring so well and were attentive at all times and thanks of course to exhibitors for allowing me to go over your dogs. You always take the best dog home.

We were in the ring late morning but it was another hot day and many dogs were affected by the heat both standing and moving. The ring was a good size but the surface presented challenges with the ground baked hard and flattened dead grass which some dogs found slippery underfoot.

Movement on the whole wasn’t good and some dogs which looked promising in profile were let down by wide or loose fronts or moving close behind.

I was looking for a balanced, medium, moderate dog with strength but not coarseness. As a working gundog the HWV should not be over angulated or exaggerated and should be in fit, hard condition with a ground covering, flowing gait. There should be undercoat and a coarse wire topcoat.

1st- Belatarr Jupiter (Mr D & Mrs J Spillane)

A handsome, upstanding nine year old and clear winner in this mixed class. He has a harsh russet coat, dense bone and correct proportions. Attractive head with kind expression and correct facial furnishings. Strong neck into well angulated shoulders and upper arm which gave him positive front movement. Ribs well back, deep brisket, firm loin, muscled hind quarters – he showed younger dogs how to move. RCC

2nd- Throstlenest Helios (Dr A S & Mrs J C Davidson)

He is a smaller, finer dog than 1 and more compact. He has a level topline with slight slope at croup and correct tail carriage, brisket to elbow. Steep upper arm. Attractive furnished head and expression and a harsh wire coat.

1st Zoltarous Wasabi for Dhalascar (Miss K Swann)

A handsome, strong dog with an excellent russet wire coat. Correct head proportions and furnishings, shoulders well laid. Deep brisket and ribs. He is in hard condition and was positive on the move. Topline held well but tail set on and carried high which for me spoiled his outline.

1st Twelveoaks Goodwood Pippin (R Court)

Head proportions correct, kind expression, sufficient coat and furnishings. Brisket to elbow, ribbing well back, strong loin, correct hind angulation and sloping croup. Front angulation is good and he has an excellent topline which was held throughout but he was not enjoying his day and didn’t move well

1st Sh Ch Zoldmali Ezmi (Imp Srb) (Mrs A L Tasker). CC and BOB. In hard condition he is a medium, balanced dog with nothing overdone. He has a harsh wire coat and tight feet. Correct head proportions, a kind eye and expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders although a little upright in upper arm. Brisket is to elbow. He has strong legs, a straight front, moderate hind angulation. Moderate spring of rib and rear angulation. Level topline kept on the move. He was well handled and very much at one with his owner, and showed well throughout, unaffected by the heat. He moved with good reach in front and a strong driving action from the rear. CC and BOB. Pleased to see him show and move so well in the Best in Show ring.

2nd Sh Ch Belatarr Kodiak (Mr D & Mrs J Spillane). Another very good dog, bigger than 1, strong and upstanding with excellent bone. Russet wire coat, attractive furnished head and dark eye. He has a prominent forechest, depth and his ribs are carried well back. Tight feet. He’s well balanced with correct body ratios, correct angulation fore and aft but he was feeling the heat and wasn’t animated on the move.

Both bitches were eleven and a half.

1st Hosokter Tisza at Goldpaw (Mrs S Nokes) In great condition at eleven years and certainly didn’t look her age. A very feminine bitch she is well balanced when stacked. Attractive head with gentle expression. I’d like to see more angulation in the rear but she is fit and moved steadily keeping her topline. Sympathetically handled she was at one with her handler.

2nd Brynffrwd Penarddun (Mrs J Le Mesurier) Another eleven year old she lacked the bone and condition of the winner looking on the slim side. I’d prefer more angulation fore and aft and better feet. She has a deep brisket and ribs well back. Harsh wire coat and correct head and furnishings but didn’t move well.

1st Zoltarous Calaeno for Canalgame (Mr F A Briley)

Just 6 months and a real baby but very promising. Balanced construction with everything in the right place at this age. Attractive head and expression. Correct angulation fore and aft, tight feet, russet coat, strong bone. Once settled she moved positively with a level topline. BP

2nd Enryb Eat Your Greens (J Elders) 11 months old bitch unfortunately feeling the heat and unsettled when set up finding the ground slippery. Her head is well furnished but coat soft at present as are her leg furnishings. Good shoulder and upper arm angulation, strong bone, good forechest and depth of brisket. She has a gentle expression and eye should darken with time. Movement rather loose and uncoordinated today.

156. Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla - Junior Bitch

1st - Twelveoaks Red Delicious (R Court). Sound balanced, 15 months bitch. Moderate and well balanced with a harsh russet coat. Correct head proportions and furnishings. Deep brisket and prominent forechest. Good feet and hind angulation. Moved positively keeping a level topline but would prefer a lower tail carriage. Should mature into a very good bitch.

2nd Zoldmali Hunter Cirok at Canalgame (Imp Hun) (Mr F A Briley)

Appealing furnished head. Good feet and bone. Shoulder and upper arm well angulated as are her hind quarters. She moved well but just needs to drop in brisket which should come as she matures

3rd - Starshot Mikaela at Brynffrwd (Mrs J Le Mesurier)

157. Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla - Novice Bitch

1st Starshot Mikaela at Brynffrwd (Mrs J Le Mesurier) 3rd in previous class where she was giving her new handler a hard time but she was more settled on the move in this class. Good wire jacket and well-furnished head. Tight feet and moderate hind angulation. She is short in body giving her a square appearance.

A good class of quality bitches of different types. Bitches 1 and 2 will change places on other occasions. 1 had the edge on movement today and held her topline throughout. Both strong bitches with good bone.

1st Redrafi Pacha Galvikki (Mrs V A & Mrs G A Hope-Cliffe & Hope-Ellershaw. A substantial but feminine bitch. Correct head proportions. Gentle expression and dark eye coordinating with her coat colour. Well laid shoulders, upper arm a little steep. Good ribbing and depth to body, brisket to elbow. She moved positively. Thick, harsh jacket completed the picture. Considered for the RCC

2nd Kisdon Insignia (Mrs P Edminson). Similar remarks apply and I was splitting hairs here. Another strongly made bitch but tended to arch over her loin standing and on the move. Good feet, deep in body, pronounced sternum, strong hindquarters. Shoulder and upper arm angles good. She was less positive on the move than 1.

1st Hazean Donetsk to Deifstock (IKC) JW (Mr W & Mrs S Cooper). Medium, moderate bitch. Balanced in profile and on the move. Russet wire coat, attractive head, dark eye, brisket to elbow, well laid shoulders, strong back and loin. Kept her topline on the move. Good depth of body and strong hind quarters. Neat feet, correct angulation fore and aft. She’s a well muscled, fit bitch and on the move she was precise driving forward from strong hind quarters with good reach in front. CC

2nd Sh Ch Enryb Skye Blue (J Elders) Bigger all through than 1 – a well made substantial bitch with strong bone but still feminine. Depth in body and correct proportions. Correct coat, attractive furnished head. Another from this kennel with well angulated shoulders and return of upper arm. Correct moderate rear angulation with positive and true ground covering movement. RCC
