The Labrador Retriever Club 83rd Breed Championship Show

I felt extremely honoured to be invited to judge such a prestigious show. I really enjoyed the

day and should like to thank the hard working committee for their hospitality and for giving 

me the opportunity to examine some super dogs. The smooth running of the ring was down 

to my two stewards, Lucy and Melanie. They made my day so easy, thank you so much.

There were some lovely quality dogs although, unfortunately, coats have suffered due to the

unprecedented heatwaves we have been having. However, in most cases I was able to find 

evidence of a correct Labrador coat.      

I was looking for a well balanced, good moving 

Labrador of the correct type. Head, coat and tail sets this and I was very pleased with my 

line up as I felt that the dogs were consistent in type. 

Special Working Dog (2 entries, 1 abs.)

1. Rose’s Rossclyde Highland Grouse at Leospring – An upstanding yellow with excellent 

muscle tone. He has a clean cut head with good length and depth of muzzle, good pigment 

and a kind, intelligent expression. Lovely reach of neck going into a firm top line which he 

held on the move.

Field Trial Dog (1 entry)

1. Rose’s Rossclyde Highland Grouse at Leospring

Special Show Working Dog (2 entries, 1 abs)

1. Woodley’s Ch Alkhamhurst Moment of Truth SGWC – A well proportioned black with a 

kind, balanced head and correct eye colour. He has a good reach of neck set into correct 

shoulders. He stood foursquare with a level top-line and a tail well set on. He moved well 

from his strong hindquarters.

Veteran Dog (6 entries, 3 abs.) 

1. Perkins’ Carromer Teguila by Keeninspires – A kind headed yellow with excellent 

pigment of 8 years. Shown in good condition with a strong neck going into good shoulders 

and continuing onto a firm top-line. Plenty of bone and substance. Good tail and tail set.

Used his hindquarters well on the move.

2. Bills’ Vetybonbetty Chocolate box – This chocolate of 10 years had a gentle head with 

good pigment and his eye colour blending well with his coat. He had a strong neck and 

good, solid bone. A little heavy for me. However, he moved well from his strong 

hindquarters.

3. Beckley’s Shork’s Nordmann at Godruo.

Baby Puppy Dog (2 entries, 1 abs.)

1. Pickin’s Exelby Alder – 5 month old chocolate that was about right for his age with good

pigment and eye colour. He needs to develop in head but time will take care of this. He 

has plenty of bone with well shaped feet. Good front and rear angulation. He moved well.

Minor Puppy Dog (8 entries, 1 abs) – A lovely class of quality pups.

1. Gilroy’s Claychalk Picasso – I liked this 6 month black with his kind head and correct 

eye colour. He has a good length and depth of muzzle and a lovely reach of neck going into

correct shoulders and onto a firm top-line. Enough bone for his age with neat feet. Moved 

very well. I will be interested to see how he develops. Best Minor Puppy

2. Kennett’s Magnavalleys Mojito – A very nice chocolate with good head that needs to 

develop a little more which is not surprising at just over 6 months. He has a nice, gentle 

expression and is short coupled with good bone and a level top-line.

Used his hindquarters on the move. Another that will be interesting to watch.

3. Edward’s Chelmcote Daddy’s Boy.

Puppy Dog (6 entries, 2 abs)

1. Braddon’s Trendlewood For All We Know – I loved the head on this 11 month old

yellow He had a very kind expression with correct eye colour and good pigment. He was 

short coupled with a strong neck going into well laid shoulders. Well boned with an 

excellent spring of rib. He moved well when he settled. Best Dog Puppy.

2. Hopkinson’s Chic Art Charmed Murtur NAF TAF – Another one with a lovely head. 

Such a gentle expression with a good length and depth of muzzle and dark pigment. Nearly 

11 months old with plenty of bone and substance and good shaped feet. Not as mature as 

my winner. Looking forward to when he reaches his full potential. Moved well.

3. McGillivray’s Crawcraigs Gazovik of Antonine NAF.

Junior Dog (7 entries, 2 abs.)

1. Druggan’s Dylsonleigh Oberon Over Balladoole – Not a big one but well made and 

balanced with a most attractive head. Masculine with a kind expression and good pigment.  

He has a firm top-line with the tail coming off just right. His rib cage is well sprung and he 

has plenty of bone with neat feet. He used his strong hindquarters on the move

2. Pattison’s Dylsonleigh Titan for Pattilands – I see he is litter brother to my winner and 

very close up. A kind headed yellow with correct eye colour and ear set. He has a strong 

neck and a level top-line with his tail coming off just right. Again moved well from his 

strong hindquarters.

3. McGillivray’s Antonine Paw Patrol.

Yearling Dog (2 entries) Both quality dogs but of very different type.

1. Shirton’s Woolman’s Free and Easy – Again a youngster with a head that I liked. A very 

loving and kind expression and well placed ears with good pigment . He is balanced and 

well made throughout with a good reach of neck flowing into a firm top-line and a well 

shaped tail set on just right. Enough bone with a nice depth of body and neat feet. A 

pleasure to go over and watch him as he moved round the ring. Pleased to award him the 

Res. CC

2. McGillivray’s Antonine Ready Eddie Go (AI) – A powerfully built yellow with a 

masculine head. He has a kind expression and good pigment. A strong neck set into well 

laid shoulders. Plenty of bone and substance. Moved very well from his muscular 

hindquarters.

Maiden Dog (3 entries, 1 abs.)

1. Kennett’s Maggnavalleys Mojito.

2. Edward’s Chelmscote Daddy’s Boy – Placed 3rd in a strong minor puppy class. A nice 

headed black with a good eye colour. He stood foursquare and is short coupled with a well 

placed neck going into good shoulders. Enough bone with good spring of rib and a level 

top-line with his tail well set on. He moved well and was unlucky to meet the first two in 

his previous class.

Novice Dog (4 entries)

1. Druggan’s A Sense of Pleasure’s Hey Jude for Balladoole (imp Deu) – A balanced 

yellow with a pleasant head, nice dark pigment and a kind but intelligent expression. Short 

coupled with excellent bone and well shaped feet. Good front and hind angulation and a 

nice deep body. He moved well.

2. Bills’ Rumhill Jagermeister – Chocolate that was unplaced in a strong minor puppy class.

A lot to like about him. He has a good neck and shoulders, a level top-line with the tail well

set on. Good bone and depth of body with a good length of leg. He just needs to tighten up 

in front on the move.

3. Litherland’s Oakhouse One Night Stand.

Undergraduate Dog (4 entries)

1. Cain’s Hannabee On a Roll – A nicely put together yellow with good length and depth of muzzle

and excellent pigment and eyes that blend into his coat well. He has a good reach of neck going 

into correct shoulders and a firm top-line. A well sprung rib cage and neat feet. Moved very well.

2. Tulloch’s Tullochmohr Take a Bow - Black with good head set on to a nice clean neck, correct 

eye colour and ear placement. Enough bone with nicely shaped feet. A good length and depth of 

body. A little slack on the top-line which showed when he moved.

3. Moody’s Trendlewood Hometown Glory.

Graduate Dog (9 entries, 2 abs.) First two were very close up.

1. Wilmshurst’s Dolwen Wish Upon a Star of Mandamay – Yellow with a clean out line, a kind 

head with good pigment. Short coupled with a strong neck set into well laid shoulders. Plenty of 

bone with a nice deep body. Moved well from his strong hindquarters.

2. Hopkinson’s Rochvale Hercules to Rocheby – A kind headed yellow with good length and depth 

of muzzle, excellent pigment and correct eye colour. Well made with a firm top-line and correct tail

and tail set. Good bone and neat feet. Not carrying his best coat at the moment. Moved well .

3. Edwards’ Kimbajak Royal Mint.

Post Graduate Dog (7 entries, 1abs.)

1. Young’s Potterspiney Optimist Vision – Yellow of good type. With the gentlest of expressions, 

correct eye colour and nice dark pigment. Compact with balance. Strong bone and well shaped feet.

Correct top-line with tail well set on. Short coupled with well sprung rib cage. Moved well.

2. Hopkinson’s Bellamar Mikado – Nice black with excellent head. Good reach of neck. Firm top

line with good shoulders. Good bone and substance. Neat feet. Moved well.

3. Perkins’ McFarwin’s Grey Legacy by Keeninspires JW.

Mid Limit Dog (6 entries, 0abs.) Very close between the first two.

1. Young’s Potterspiney Aramis JW – I liked the head on this black with its correct eye colour and 

well positioned ears. He has a strong neck set into well laid shoulders going into a firm top-line.  

His bone reaches right down to his neat feet and he has good strong hindquarters. He moved well.

2. Halgarth’s Amberstope Gold Label at Chapelmanor (AI) – Yellow with kind head and gentle 

expression. Strong neck set into correct shoulders. Nice deep body with good bone and neat feet. 

Moved well from strong hindquarters.

3. Findjan’s Rossacre the Duke.

Limit Dog (7 Entries, 2abs.)

1. Hopkinsons’ Rocheby School Master – Not a big one but with a balanced outline. A quality 

yellow with an attractive head and good pigment, correct eye colour and ear carriage. Excellent 

reach of neck with level top-line and a correctly set on tail. He had a nice deep body with good 

front and hind angulation. Moved well.

2. Miles’ Llanstinan Roman Reigns – A lovely chocolate, Unlucky to meet my winner. He has an 

attractive head with his eyes blending just right with his coat. Correct pigment. His top-line is level

with his tail coming off just right. Plenty of bone and substance with well shaped feet. Just a little 

wider in front than my winner. Moved well.

3. Falshaw’s Lonicerium Jack Sparra.

Open Dog (8 entries, 2abs.) A lovely class of quality Labs. I was spoilt for choice.

1. Metcalfe’s Baileydale Rocket Man – A yellow of excellent type. He stood foursquare with a 

lovely, clean, balanced outline. He has a most attractive head that is masculine without any hint of 

coarseness. A clean neck going into well laid back shoulders. He has a good, firm, level top-line 

with a well shaped tail coming off just right. He is short coupled with an excellent spring of rib, 

plenty of bone and well shaped feet. He used his powerful hindquarters as he moved round the 

ring. Pleased to be able to award him the CC.

2. Reynold’s Sh Ch Carromer Chippindale – Yellow with an appealing head and expression and 

good pigment. I have admired this dog from the ringside on many occasions and was not 

disappointed when examining him. He is well put together with a nice deep body, strong, clean, 

neck and shoulders and a level top line. Plenty of bone and nice neat feet. He moved well from his

strong hindquarters.

3. Brackner’s Sh Ch Original Soundtrack Del Trango for Brupurhat.

Champion Dog (3 entries, 0 abs.) 3 very worthy Champions

1. Woodley’s Sh Ch Alkhamhurst Prime Shot – This black has a pleasing head and was presented in

excellent condition. He has a nice balanced outline with a clean neck and shoulders. A correct top

line with the tail coming off just right. He has a good width and depth of body with strong bone 

going right down to his neat feet. Moved very well.

2. Tulloch’s Sh Ch Binnaig Sea the Stars Over Tullochmor JW – A different type to my winner. A 

quality yellow with a masculine head. A balanced, well made dog with plenty of bone and 

substance. He had a strong, clean neck set into well laid shoulders which matched his powerful 

hindquarters. A nice, firm top-line with correctly set on tail. Pleased to see he used his hindquarters 

well on the move.

3. Becker’s Swiss Ch Miles from Nowhere heavy-Duty (ATC AZ73004SWE).

Special Beginners Dog (5 entries, 0 abs.)

1. Kennett’s Magnavalleys Mojito.

2. Moody’s Trendlewood Hometown GloryJW - Placed 3rd in Undergraduate. A compact yellow 

with a pleasant head, good pigment and correct ear set. His neck is well set onto his shoulders and 

his top-line is correct. He has a good spring of rib and is well boned with neat feet. Moved OK. 

3. Stewart’s Timouron Sign of the Times.
