Leeds City & District Canine Association

It was a great pleasure to judge English Setters at Leeds championship show for the first time . I was very pleased with the overall quality of the entry, with some lovely examples of the breed across the classes. I was looking for correct breed type, balance, elegant outlines, good heads and expressions, sound construction and, importantly, good movement with reach and drive. They should be a working gundog , with construction to allow them to do a days work on the moor. 

There were some particularly promising youngsters, as well as some lovely mature and veteran exhibits. My final awards were very pleasing, and I would like to thank all exhibitors for allowing me to judge their lovely dogs .

MINOR PUPPY DOG — 1 Entry

A very well put-together puppy with good balance and nicely matched angles. Low-set ears, masculine head and the softest expression. Moved very true and steadily. A very promising young dog. Loved his puppy roll and enthusiasm for his job.

A well grown on puppy with good depth of chest and well-ribbed back. Good tail set. A little close behind on the move, but a very promising youngster. He impressed me on the day .

Particularly nice young male . Good depth of chest and well-ribbed back, with good width to second thigh. Good front reach and a level topline which he held on the move . Moved well with good reach, needs to strength in hocks but a smart young dog with plenty to like , look forward to seeing him mature on , where he should trouble the best.

2nd , LAWSON, Mrs L A — Summerseve Cezanne JW

Another smart youngster. Super masculine head with the softest expression. Deep chest and well-ribbed back, shown in excellent muscle tone. With the correct silky coat. He moved very positively with drive from strong quarters . A very promising young dog who has lots of potential , I think you will have fun with him .

A smart dog with super breed type. Best of heads, good forechest and a beautifully balanced outline. Good reach of neck. Super coat of correct texture , strong rear quarters . A dog with a great deal of potential , on the day he just didn’t quite have enough maturity to challenge the main winners but he was close up for RCC . I liked him very much. 

2nd , NEATH, Miss Janet , Albadora Total Madness JW

Loved his head and dark eye. Unfortunately, he does not always help himself on the stack. I would prefer a better finish to the croup, he does move well with reach and drive.

An upstanding dog with a masculine head and dark eye. Good profile on stack . Well-sprung ribs and strong rear quarters. Good reach and drive, and moved well. A very pleasing dog , shown in good muscular condition. Deserved class win.

2nd GOUTORBE, Mrs Rebecca E Wansleydale Beekeeper At Redhara

I have always liked the look of this dog. Super head and well-laid shoulders. Unfortunately, he did not look happy today and was not carrying his tail, which affected his overall presentation.

Still a lovely example of the breed who has lots to offer.

A super champion dog. Loved his head, well-laid shoulders and deep chest, with a good finish to croup. Moved well. Just a little proud of his tail, but nevertheless a lovely dog and a very worthy Champion , shown in lovely silky coat. Pleased to award him the RDCC on his overall qualities.

Loved his head and softest expression. Good reach of neck and deep chest. Moved well with drive and has a lovely silky coat. A very attractive dog. He is only young and has still some maturing to be the finished article . Handled and presented well

A super dog for type and balance and everything I wanted in an English Setter. Well ribbed back, correct finish to croup and shown in excellent muscle tone. Nothing overdone but everything in the right place , lovely dog to go over . Stifles well let down. Moved very well , showing good drive from short hocks while holding his topline, carried and used his tail correctly .

A beautiful example of the breed and a very worthy Dog CC and Best Veteran, thank you for bringing him today .

A lovely veteran, shown in full coat. Masculine head and good breed character. Not quite as positive on the move today, but nevertheless a very nice veteran, with many breed qualities.

Best of forechest, with a pretty head and balanced outline. Well laid shoulders. Deep chest , level topline . Moved with good drive, although a little close behind.

A pretty girl with a good outline and well-laid shoulders. Well-bent stifles and good balance. I would have preferred more strength in forechest. Moved steady , nice side gait .

My star of the day. I loved her outline and her head proportions , with the kindest expression and lovely low-set ears. Good reach of neck and a level topline which she held beautifully on the move. Well ribbed back with good spring of ribs.

She has such style and elegance and was very worthy for Bitch CC and ultimately Best of Breed. Sheila should easily go on to be made up .

Very similar comments apply. Another feminine bitch who moved extremely well. Good muscular condition and silky coat . Just dropped her topline on the stack at times, which separated her from the winner. A lovely bitch and a very worthy Reserve Bitch CC. I am sure her title won’t be far away.

A pretty girl with a correct outline. I liked her balance and overall breed type. Moved well. Just another that needs to drop a pound or so to show her outline to its best advantage.
